I've been doing this technique for a while now in my own studio sessions, but I recently realized something that blew my mind so I had to make a tutorial on it! Crazy it's been 3 years since I uploaded that initial Skrillex project breakdown and I'm still learning so much from it! Hope y'all enjoy this and give it a like and subscribe if you haven't already. Skrillex got me into this kind of music years ago, and even today I'm learning new things about it.

Even better when you realize that people have spent over a decade with years of degrees and experience between themselves applying music theory and other things like "call and response" to explain the music that skrillex makes when he actually just sits there making noises and arranging notes and parts so it sounds good to him. So many hours of people studying music just to reverse engineer someone who gets the results he wants with no formal training and makes bangers.
It's really hard isn't it? Not so much to come up with it but for it to actually be good is what makes it so hard.
@@dsrree He went to a private academy that specialized in the arts. So no he's not just some dude playing around with midi and pressing buttons. Virtual Riot also went to a special college for music production. This world lies to you about stuff like success. Like the classic story of the self made billionaire who dropped out of college like Bill Gates. If you want to be a master then you need to learn from the current masters and I don't mean the artist because they were trained by these masters. There's no way around learning music theory and applying it if you're serious about producing.
It's pretty crazy how these absolutely fundamental techniques can bring your music to life. It's so easy to sit on a groove and wonder why it's not "moving" ... but putting stuff like this to practice is probably an easy way to break out of that in tons of different genres.
Using the downbeat as an axis: it responds to offset's call while, sure, calling the next bar... Thank you !
this is really eye opening, that downbeat call/response really allows the sections to flow together
what i found incredible, is the sound design, skrillex was ahead of time. still today i hardly figure it out how he create some sounds. the processing is so damn hard and complex

@Timmy Audio lmfao people who think Noisia was ghost producing Skrillex are in an extreme minority. This is a completely baseless speculation with no kind of merit. They sound completely different for one, and secondly why would Skrillex continue making the same dated sounds after blowing up? As if you own conspiracy is some kind of fact anyways lol.... You can find interviews of Skrillex saying he was trying to emulate Noisia and failing, then running with his own style.
This is such a laughable take, early Skrillex pales in comparison to anything Noisia or Tipper were making years before Skrillex blew up. Not ahead of its time at all, it was from its time and became dated fast.
@@SuperMonibuvy skrillex also told that his music is different and dont want to be called only one genre artist he dont want to stick to same kind of music..I think he wants to explore the beauty of music which it holds and its surely the path he wants to walk through..and i think Its not about the numbers Its all about the legacy 🙏🏻...
Dated? I only now found out he exists a few days ago 🤣 Haven’t kept up w/ EDM since 2000-2012. I remember going to a huge club as a young teenager, around 2000-2002, and one room in the basement played drum & bass. Dubstep is much better than drum & base! Anyway, you sound very jealous. Apparently this dude is already one of the richest DJ’s. Clearly people like him. That is, after all, why he has earned so much money….his music is highly demanded.
@@NicoleStevensHays11x if you're only just hearing about Skrillex, then it seems you failed to keep up with a lot more than EDM; I'm not even a particularly huge fan, but that dude took over the cultural zeitgeist surrounding all mainstream music at a certain point.
That call and response technique is literally genius. Thank you so much for not only the video but that extra bit breaking down skrillexs scary monsters and nice sprites especially the extra sections of call and responses you noticed were different because It made me realize (might be talking out my ass tryna explain this) that the calls and response can be used as like a melody almost in the same sense that like talking with your voice in a conversation isn’t melodic but it has melodic aspects to it.
To elaborate further cuz I’m bored I kind think of it like how D to the A goes by tee grizzley and lil yachty if you think of their verses specifically as call and response how it changes the flavor of the song with their voices being what stays the same and their lyrics being the changes that make each call and response a lil different. Probably doesn’t make a ton of sense but 🤷🏻

Just started the video but wanted to interject to say those Magic LFO tables are amazing!! Really cool for if you are stuck and need a new way to make inspiration. Honestly the plucky and melodic ones give me some really really interesting and almost “swingy” vibes. Super cheap too i highly suggest checking out

Very interesting, for some Basses in the call and response he uses frist a subbass that follows the mid/highend but at second he switches the subbass to an 808 but the rest stays the same. Thats a genius way, to keep things interessant!

The fact that you put out youtube videos that intentionally violate copy right flags, not only demonstrates your passion for teaching, but makes me (a largely unknown producer lol) wanna vouch for you, your videos and products 100% (despite the fact that it won't really help your income lol 2x). Either way, in the 2 years and 6 months that I've been watching your videos, my final masters have gotten louder (finally hitting -6 lufs) cleaner (finally hitting -6 without distortion), and I feel more comfortable showing my music to friends/ actually playing sets with my tunes. "Thanks" is far too small of a term to accurately express what I'm feeling as enter this comment.
All I can say is lockdown is temporary ....AHEE is forever.

I think loads of people do this, but Skrillex makes lots of examplars of it. I think of it as leading into the next pattern iteration. Some people call the second call a filler.

If you have mid side processing in your mix, on your bass, instruments etc, should you avoid it during the mastering stage? Would it mess your mix up or not really?
IMO the only mid side you should do in the mastering stage is making sure the sub is mono and reduce any resonate frequencies. a boost in the high can help if needed but be careful because a really wide high end has bad effects when endcoded to soundcloud
I'll be honest; I despise Skrilex's music (and his peer brosteppers) with a cold disgust because it ruined Dubstep by oversaturating the scene with a sound that was initially used sparingly and with humor.
*BUT* I deeply appreciate your efforts to show us, the viewers, that there is still some value to be excavated from it. It keeps me motivated to continue digging and learning. ✌
