    Thanks so much for this review, Hugh. I sooooo want the PicoMic to deliver, because it's probably the most elegant solution on the market, but as an audio engineer, I have to say the PicoMic is just not there. Granted, I've only heard it in UA-cam videos (though I've watched 7 or 8 well done reviews now), but it always sounds harsh and crunchy to me. In comparison to the similar Røde and Sennheiser options, the PicoMic system sounds more distorted. The ends of phrases sound ragged, and the noisefloor (and noise signature) is just too pronounced for me. I wish it were different: I'd gladly pay twice what they're asking if the system sounded as good as the Røde Wireless Go, because the ease-of-use of the PicoMic seems to be off the charts.
    Thanks again for your time on this review, Hugh!

    Awesome review! I own both systems myself. If there is one thing I REALLY love about the Pico,...it's the ability to remotely turn up/down the transmitter mic gain. You can slap it on somebody and ask them to talk for a few seconds and change the mic gain to match that persons voice strength. The Rode is stuck at one fixed setting and it's it's not hard to clip that mic preamp with loud sounds. I did a trick with the Pico that would never work with the Rode, at a small live concert, I placed the Pico mic not far from a PA speaker, I turned down the mic gain all the way and wow!....no mic clipping near a LOUD speaker! I wound up getting music that didn't have a ton or "room" ambient sound. This was a trick that I never expected to work. I thought "Oh,...even with the mic gain all the way down, I'm going to distort the Hell out of it"...but NO! With the mic gain pulled all the way in, these can tolerate a very high sound pressure level! Yes, I still have the Rodes in my camera bag but those Picos are REALLY cool. (having actual mic gain adjustment is awesome)

      Hi Cliff, Do you think the Rode Go has better sound quality than the Pico? How would you describe the difference in the audio quality between the Pico and the GO?
      I want need a wireless mic for my Yoga videos so the sound of my voice is important.

    • @clifftotten7609
      @clifftotten7609 4 роки тому +1

      @@swaha55 - For me, I find them to be very similar. The Rode has slightly more bass in the voice but the Pico has slightly more treble. Honestly, with 10 seconds of EQ on both, you can match them perfectly. A MAJOR advantage with the Pico, you can adjust the mic/transmitter gain using the receiver. The Rode is stuck at whatever they set it at. So, you can adjust the Pico for soft sounds or loud sounds at it will never clip the audio. And, the Pico is so light and tiny, you can hide it anywhere. The Rode is heavier and tends to "flop" around on clothes. I like them both but use the Pico much more then my Rode. The sound is great on both.

      Hil Cliff, thanks for the inputs.
      I have a very important question in order to make a decision. I’m going to shoot some vidoes where the holder of the mic will be moving around and turns his/ her back away from the camera but not far from the camera. Have you tried something like that? I’m worried about the drop out of the signal

    • @clifftotten7609
      @clifftotten7609 4 роки тому +1

      @@A12Diary - The signal strength is great for 2.4ghz. It's modulates better than the Rode Go. However, all 2.4ghz systems will suffer from the long distance line of site problem. Low 500-600mhz radio systems literally go right through clothes and people and walls. 2.4ghz radio waves get absorbed by these things. Generally speaking if a presenter is close to a camera, as in 10-15 feet away, they can spin around with no problems but if the are 50 feet away, line of site is needed. Remember, the is a 2.4ghz frequency limitation that all mics in this class will have.

    Wonderful review, as always!
    As a solo operator, avoiding audio hassles is exactly where I'm at, and trading a bit of extra post for quick-and-easy on-set (when my attention is divided) is always worth it.
    I like to think that the PicoMic innovations (unified mic/TX simplicity combined with a plethora of friendly RX 'quality of life' features) - will have other manufacturers take notice.
    I'm really looking forward to where this may lead, and hopefully PicoGear do well enough they can ship to my country too! (Australia).
    All the best, cheers

    I think your comments are spot on about the noise floor. I tried watching the portion of the video where you list off the different mics in multiple environments. I'm 33 with average hearing. For the Pico: In a room with the ambient noise of our furnace running, I heard nothing. No furnace running, still on the laptop, nothing. Phone: Headphones and phone audio, nothing. Over to the PC, nothing from the monitor speakers. Stand alone speakers I can hear it, but really only when you're not speaking, and finally with my AudioTechnica BPHS1 headset on, I can hear it even when you're speaking, but very minimally and only because, I think, I am indeed trying to listen for it. I think for run-and-gun setups that want seamless recording on two people in the least cumbersome way and truly wireless, this does the trick. It's main advantage for me over the Saramonic Blink500 is the exceptional battery life. I might show up at a place and shoot from 8 AM to 10 PM, guerilla style, walkabout. With the Blink 500s very limited battery life (4-6 hours), I've now got an additional charger and more cables to worry about, in which case I might as well just plug into a Zoom or Tascam. My one question is, does the picomic transmitter really not fold in on itself even on t-shirts? I mostly wear t-shirts which obviously don't have sturdy collars. If that is the case, this is worth the extra cash for me over the more budget friendly consumer options. Great review as always! Thanks.

    After much hassle and wait to get the Pico Mic ordered, I’ve now been using it a couple of months, including a recent iPad-only documentary project. It is my best audio purchase in several years...clean sound, easy to use, tiny - really tiny. Crazy good battery life. And my best lighting purchase has been the Lume Cube light panel. Used them both on a project and was able to do high level production value with all gear tossed in a messenger bag.

    Your immanent review of these mics was impressive! What do you think of the new Saramonic Blink 500? I was able to buy this system new (unfortunately not delivered yet due to corona) with 6 transmitters, 4 receivers and 4 included lavs for 530€ on a rebate deal. That is crazy value if it works reliably. The picomic is unfortunately unavailable in Europe, which maybe would have been my pick nonetheless.

    Well fast forward a couple of years and I've purchased the picomic 2 Pro.
    The newer model now has a built in jack into each transmitter to allow lav mics or even the option to turn any mic into a wireless system.
    Both transmitters are even smaller than the originals, but still have amazing battery life, and they now come with wind muffs. The receiver has been tuned to give better sound and the limiters appear to work better too.
    It'd definitely worth another look!

    I am so very interested in the picomic system. I do mainly one on one interviews in semi public areas (retail stores, restaurants, etc). And I’m one of the few using multiple iPhones to shoot different angles/tracks and using my iPad Pro and LumaFusion to edit and upload to UA-cam. Overall, I think(?)... the Picomic might(?) be exactly what I’m looking for. I don’t know, but I’m very glad you looked this over and gave your thoughts and gave SO many variations that could be achieved depending on audio editing and comparisons to other systems. It really, overall, sounded very well rounded. I really appreciated the sound, even with the slight background white noise. Your voice just sounded... well again, well rounded without a lot of effort post.

    I've been looking at the 2 channel receiver options in this size/price category for a series of upcoming 'street food vlog' style shoots. But I found that the other options (Sony, Comica) were too bulky, costly and conspicuous when going through customs - OR - (Saramonic) mixed the two channels down into a centre weighted dual mono output. If thisPicoMic gives discreet L/R for each mic, then maybe it wins for the job I need it to do... Though I look back wistfully at the days when I would travel to shoot these types of things with a crew of 8-10, each with a responsibility for a piece of production. When sound or customs clearance was the paid job of a focussed professional. I really could have used this last month in Mexico City!

    Thanks Hugh! A very balanced review, as always. One note I would have is that when running two sets of the Rodes, using the Panasonic XLR box is a bit of overkill- I think a more accurate comparison to the Pico would be a simple non-powered mixer like the Saramonic AX-100. Much cheaper than the Panasonic box, but of course still bulky and fiddly, compared to the Pico, which is just so much sleeker and better thought-out.

    Let me be honest. First, you have a REALLY great voice, much in the style of traditional pro voice-over guys. It wouldn't surprise me if you've been hired for voice-over work. Your style is unique as well. Second, none of these mics in this video sound all that good. If I only had a couple hundred dollars, I'd drop the wireless altogether and just buy wired lavalier mics. Why don't I like the mics in this show? First, I am monitoring on a pair of Neuman KH-120 near field studio monitors. As a recording engineer, I think these are may be the best bargain in the speaker world, though they are not cheap by most standards. Coming in at $1300/pair they're pricey, but well worth it if you want to really know what you are really getting. On these Neumans, your voice recording does not sound great, sonically speaking, of course. It's somewhat boomy and somewhat edgy, which is a hallmark of lower cost mics. A $150 Shure SM7 beats all of these tested mics handily. But of course, we are talking lavs for live use, so lavs are different animals than studio or stage mics. Even the older wired Sony ECM44B at $150 will beat any of the wireless lavs reviewed here. But it is wired. So a pair of ECM44 Sony's are about $300, but you have to run a cable. Well, if you're only 9 feet away from the camera, why bother with the problems of wireless? Why lose audio quality for the minor convenience of wireless. So my opinion is, use wireless only when needed. Use wired when it's easy to do and not much hassle. Spend at least $300 on a pair of wired lavs like the Sony's. If you rich, you can spend much more and get much more, like some Sennheiser and Sony's)that might cost $500/mic. Can you hear the difference? In the same way you can see the difference between low cost versus high cost lenses. But it's not necessary unless you are really concerned about top pro quality mics. As George Lucas says, sound is half his film. So anyway, what do I know? I have recorded and mixed gold records, major film scores, and produced and engineered in recording studios years and spent years in LA working on scoring recording, post sound, etc etc. Sound is more important than most people realize. I say, dump wireless mics and just keep them around for when you really must have them, like when the talent is walking around or when talent is too far from the camera. But for a sitting interview, wired is the way to go. Better quality, XLR connectors, no interference problems, less fooling around, no interference, no batteries, and totally solid performance. Oh, and did I mention better quality for less money?

    • @3BMEP
      @3BMEP  5 років тому

      Thanks for weighing in! Wireless don’t sound as good as wired, all else being equal, I agree. OTOH, there WAS a wired lav among them, the TASCAM DR10L. I personally found it to be much fuller sounding than the rest (and lower noise) so I chose not to add anything other than compression to it. Nor do I disagree that some people (especially those whose ears and equipment are as tuned as yours) may find the audio “boomy” or “warm.” I suspect this is more a function of choice (mine) and placement. The Sennheiser MKE 600 on an overhead boom, for example, sounds much crisper and less “boomy” to my ear, and that was my go-to for awhile until navigating around the boom began to annoy me. 😈 I shall have to try a wired lav like you suggest. Though for me the value of moving freely without worrying about wires and boom poles exceeds the value of the differences in sound, especially given that most folks listen through buds or laptop speakers. Again, thanks for contributing to the conversation and giving me another angle of attack on achieving the best sound.

    • @hawaiirealmedia5610
      @hawaiirealmedia5610 5 років тому +3

      @@3BMEP The value of wireless is the freedom to move around, so you are right about that. That's a good reason to use them. . Have a listen to the Sennheiser MKE-2 lav mic. (I think you can also hook it up to a wireless transmitter system) Of course, this mic will set you back almost $500, but the difference in sound quality is undeniable.Here is a demo: ua-cam.com/video/9ETJIuES2qc/v-deo.html. Is it worth it? For me it is. And keep in mind that your voice is one of your best assets. You have an excellent voice and a top notch mic will yield impressive results. Guaranteed. If your voice wasn't that great, then maybe not worry about it. But for one who is gifted? Well, then, you would be well rewarded with the sound of a top mic. For one, people will think your show looks better even though it is the mic they are responding too. Most listeners don't know about this stuff, but they will assume it's picture quality that is better instead of comprehending that it's actually the microphone. It doesn't really make sense, but it's true. As far as the best mic for you for your presentations, might I suggest a studio condenser mic like am AKG 414. They cost about $600 for a used one on eBay. Don't forget the cool looking (and functional) shock mount that is the SH100 and a good wind screen. Adds a pro look and helps prevents rumble in the room. You could leave it inside the video frame and show it off, as they are very pro looking microphones and sure to impress. Also note that if you get a AKG414, you will find EQ'ing the voice much easier and the quality will just be there to begin with. Much less work in post. In any case, the sound quality will beat up any lav in the world, because lav mics basically suck because they are stuck with the task of recording a voice from the chest position. That's why they sound so boomy. Put your ear up to someone's chest and listen to them talk. Boomy? Of course it is. (but also a good way to get a date) An AKG 414 sitting right in front of you would yield far superior sound like a pro recording studio. Or if you're on a budget, like me, just get my favorite lower cost studio mic, the Shure SM7. I love it for voice work and singing and it only costs $170. It is a dynamic mic and not a condenser. Thanks for the super helpful, intelligent, amusing, and highly informative content on your channel. I'll stay tuned. One of these days I'll start my own show and you will find me sitting in front of a Shure SM7 desk mic. Then when I hit 1M viewers, I'll upgrade to the AKG414.

    Any idea if you can record straight to laptop without the need for an audio interface? If it works with Macbook Pro straight into the TRRS headphone jack, that would be cool for facetime and other streaming use.

    Can you remotely turn on the Picomics? I've had a situation with my Rode Go when I've put them on the priest too early and he goes into a back room out of range and I loose connection for too long, they shut down and I have to go find him to turn it back on . Turning them on remotely would be awesome.

    I posted a $249 Saramonic Blink500 B2 dual transmitter to one receiver eith mic jack lavalier support here ua-cam.com/video/4VOPROZ86YY/v-deo.html I think I might have needed to lower input db by a few db maybe to -12db or so on my Panasonic G9, and I also have considered buying two Sennheisers lavs to plug on my $399 Saramonic UWMIC9 which I have been using a couple years now. I like Saramonic for the price and my instinct is if Saramonic has just as little interference, then any evt low quality lav mics could eventually be exchanged to a higher quality one, I'd like to test that.. I hope the Saramonic also does the 2.4Ghz frequency hopping stuff. I like the idea of display etc but I think what we might need is post auto synchronization of backup local recordings on the small transmitters themselves just in case of any interference to be able to recover the recording off a MicroSD storage in each transmitter or something. So this is what the next picomic should do, add mini jack and built in microsd backup recording.

    Damn that tascam dr10l sounds so good.
    But 2 rode wireless go sets into a splitter looks tempting, especially as the receivers are so small.
    The rode kit can easily be used on a gopro whereas the pico receiver is too big.
    The pico mic needs a mkii to claim the crown.

    I'm very tempted with the XSW-D now that the price has dropped. I'd need a lav anyway so it comes in a lot cheaper than the Rode. When you take into account the price of the ME2 lav it's almost just £50 for the wireless element. I use an Ursa Mini Pro G2 so do you think the gain controls of the camera offset any limitations of the XSW-D?

    • @3BMEP

    These look promising
    I just did a review of the RODE wireless Go and they couldn't even work at 50 feet when I turned away from the "Line of signt"
    you might want to give the new AZDEN PRO-XR and see what you think they have the power yet still small form factor

      Rick, Pico says they should work better than the GO, but in my basic, finite and tougher testing, it performed similarly to the GO and the XSW, not nearly as well as the Sony UWP, Sennheiser G4 EW100, or in fact the RØDE Filmmaker and AVX. Will it perform better than the RØDE GO in your particular use case? Possibly. Anyone else out there who has done this particular test?

    • @3BMEP

      Yes, just like other mics using this technology - though RODE Filmmaker and Sennheiser AVX do better. Mics like Sony UWP and Sennheiser G4 are much better still.

    Hello, My purpose is to record videos on my canon camera using a wireless microphone(just like the rode wireless go). But i also need something to be able to hear(wireless) the audio of the participants in Zoom calls or regular phone calls and talk to them.Bose QuietComfort 35 can do this.But it looks too heavy and lacks the ability of routing my audio to the canon camera (mic input 3.5mm )which is bit far from my desk. I don't want to buy two different things.
    So suggest me some wireless microphone that can transfer my audio clearly to the camera or laptop and also listen audio in calls.(a very minimalistic headset that looks good in the videos & video calls/detachable from the microphone setup when not in use).Please ensure it is compact, wireless, good quality microphone. If it is a user replaceable battery system, then it will be more convenient to me.

      Tristan Possible? Yes. Splitter cable would do the trick. Advisable? Unclewr. Has anyone out there tried this? If I were faced with the need for four separate mics I’d be feeding them into my TASCAM DR70-D dedicated audio recorder. It is quieter and forces me to slow down. I’d either synch in post or feed the camera with one cable from the TASCAM (or similar device from Zoom, say, or Sound Design). I’d see all four channels on one screen, too. But this may just be my comfort level with equipment I’ve used longer.

    So! I hate to do this but, just like white balance, bit depth, and JPEG compression, people watch YT video on many different devices, What you ( and I ) hear on our monitors bears little relation to the audio coming out of a $5 pair of earbuds a $100 pair of earphones an iPhone, Samsung, iPad or computer speaker from god knows who... When people comment that this system or that system sounds better they should be required to list their age, sex, on which device they listened and in what environment (kitchen table with our without dogs or kids present, on the bus, or driving their car), Then you could create a spreadsheet and record different versions for each different device or setting even age specific hearing ,,, you get the point ,,, Hugh I love you, but they all sounded good because YOU sound good. The RODE or PICO systems were just fine and I could not separate your floor noise from my refrigerator ... Have a great week. /dL

    as always, thank you for the effort and the sharing. the pico "sounds" really interesting. i very much liked the clips you labelled during the vid. i very much like the idea of a headphone port which now makes smaller cameras that do not have a headphone jack suddenly more useful (canon 6dmk2, canon sl2, panasonic gx85, sony a6xxx). now i wonder, how can i suspend that 2nd pico mic over my interviewee for a quasi-boom source?. lastly, as always, i am a very appreciative subscriber. thumbs up.
