Thanks, Fil, for giving a spotlight on Bobby Vee. Bob Dylan had said in an interview that he and Bobby Vee had a friendship, both professional and personal. Bobby Vee April 30, 1943 - October 24, 2016 Thanks for the great body of work you left behind to enjoy!

I'm really surprised to hear that, but thanks for sharing the info. I couldn't imagine a bigger contrast in style between Dylan's literate, complex and social commentary songs and the pure pop of Bobby Vee. But I think Dylan had an interest in pop music during his adolescent years and had to be somewhat imprinted or influenced by it.

@@SallyBedow It seems like Dylan has in recent years recorded songs that are pop classics and broader range of classics from the past. His appreciation for other singer songwriters is pretty well-known. Lightfoot is very much in the folk tradition, not a pop artist.

"American Bandstand" on TV and this was her favourite song. Bobby Vee was 18 years old when this song was released. Other hit songs were "Rubber Ball" and"The. Night Has a Thousand Eyes." My Mum was a teenager living in Philadelphia in the 50's, when the show was broadcast live from that city. The first kids who showed up at the studio were the ones who got on the show that day. She went to a public school, and the kids from the public schools were upset because the Catholic high schools had an earlier dismissal time, so it was almost impossible to get on the show if you went to a public school. She was lucky enough to be on the show 6 times...I guess she ran really fast those days. 😊

Bobby Vee was brought in to replace Buddy Holly after his death. The little cry at the end of the verses were done to mimic Buddy, as was the music and his overall voice.I didn't know this at the time as I was 9 years old in 1961, I just knew I loved the song and his voice. Watching this showed me why I loved his sound so much. It was the fast vibrato. Still love it today. Loved all his songs.

I never got to meet him, and wasn't even born yet when he came along, but I knew he was my Mom's cousin and that we were related through our Norweigan and Finnish heritage, though no-one ever made a big deal of it. I really appreciate your analysis of his voice and the empathy you show toward the tragic manner in which he entered the music industry (I recall my parents telling us as teens about 'the night the music died' and even remember my Mom often singing a song about that tragic event; the words and tune of which I still recall: "Look up in the sky, Way up to the north, There are three stars, Brightly shining forth....."). I remember this very, very well. As a tween and teen, I spent 2 nights a week at our local Teen Club dancing to so many songs like this. As an adult living in Minnesota, I got to know a really good friend of Bobby Vee's who grew up in Moorhead, MN/Fargo, ND area and played in a garage band with Bobby Vee and some of their musical friends. His name was Jim Kleinfelder, a drummer. Jim was really sad when Bobby Vee died in 2016 and Jim followed his friend, passing not long after. Jim and Bobby stayed in touch for decades and only old age and being infirm kept them from that in later years. BTW, American Bandstand was what I raced home from school to watch. I would practice dances in front of the t.v. and be ready to go with what I learned on Fri and Sat nights at Teen Club. Five or so years ago, a couple of friends and I resurrected "Teen Club" for a night and invited all who ever attended over it's time. The original Teen Club was 10 Cents to get in, so that's what we charged for our "reunion". Such a great time and it was surprising how many old records we were able to gather for the fun time. I had forgotten that brief time when teen tragedy songs/records were a thing. "Running Bear", "Patches", "Teen Angel", and the haunting "Endless Sleep". What were they thinking putting those songs out for teens?!!

I've heard this song, but never knew the name of the artist. He's pretty cute! So fresh faced. All the innuendos that I took for granted and never heard, you pointed out very clearly, Fil. Slowing it down for a novice like me. I don't have a good ear to pick up the vibrato when it goes by so quickly. Just like when Lisa Marie Presley was singing. She had very complicated song with a lot of ups and downs and half ups and up again and down again or some combination of that vocal range that I didn't get until you, Fil broke it down. Just like here. The subtle things that make it complicated, but make the song beautiful and unique. I miss because I don't know about music, just a fan. Never could afford lessons, just paper and pencil as a kid. Cast offs from other people because when dad retired from the military he worked for the city as a "refuse collector". We had a lot of neat things that people tossed, but that was how we lived to make ends meet. No dance lessons, no music lessons. All extra money was set aside for my sister and me to attend university. Thank you for breaking this down and analyzing this for us. 👍❤🌸🌹

Bobby Vee [in the US] came along at a good time, as Rock & Roll was sliding into the doldrums, in the late 1950s to early '60s, with Elvis in the US Army, Chuck Berry doing prison time, the deaths of Buddy Holly, Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens; along with the (US) radio payola scandal . . . as there were factions among the US adults that wanted to tamp-down on Rock & Roll, as they saw it threatening the youth of America.
Record companies and concert promoters, to carry-on their livelihoods, then started to promote guys with striking physical looks, such as James Darren, Frankie Avalon, Fabian, George Maharis, etc.; but, they were not top-tiered in the singing talents department, especially Fabian.
Vee was a standout, in that era, in that he had good looks and an exceptional singing voice; where his appeal still carries-on to this day. After all, when was the last time you heard the playing of "Hound Dog Man" or "Turn Me Loose" by Fabian?

Bobby Vee sold 160 million records in his career. Had 38 charted Billboard hit singles, was named one of the top 10 consistent hitmakers of the era & had gold records.
He recorded with his real name Robert Thomas Velline when he switched briefly to a more folky-repertoire in the 70s. His last album was 2014's The Adobe Sessions -- a more Americana-Roots effort with a more mature voice that garnered good reviews.
Bobby Vee was in the audience at a Bob Dylan concert & Bob dedicated "Suzie Baby," from the stage to Vee. Dylan had a lot of respect for Vee. There's a nice picture online of them both together at that Dylan concert.
The early 60s Bobby Vee, Bobby Rydell & Chubby Checker maybe even Connie Francis & Johnny Burnette -- all sold millions of records back then & charted often. Definitely deserve to be in the R&R Hall of Fame ahead of any rap, hip-hop artists, or people like Dolly Parton (not rock n' roll at all). Create a special category if you have to. Oh and also...
Ed Sullivan, who jump-started many major careers (Elvis & The Beatles) on his Sunday night network TV show viewed at times as high as 60 million people.
As usual, great assessment Wings of Pegasus. Always enjoyable to listen to your posts. Well researched & presented.

I used to confuse these guys, and still do to some degree.
I'm just a drummer man, with dreams of singing and simultaneously, and in a contrapuntal sense rhythmically.
I probably wrote the previous paragraph slightly wrongly, but you are the best analysis maven, and there are some damn good ones on this platform.

Another Carole King gem. It sounds as though there is an extra bar in the intro, adding yet more detail, and with an augmented chord (hurts me so) at a time when they were not common in pop music. It harks back to the structure of old standards, which often included an introduction. A bit like the Beatles with "Do You Want To Know a Secret".

I played with Bobby in the ‘70s. We did “The Midnight Special” live in early ‘74 - at 8 o’clock in the morning. It’s the real deal. We were all pretty sleepy. I think I was so young that I didn’t drink coffee yet.
In the ‘60s, Bobby was still heavily influenced by Buddy Holly. He’d dropped the rapid vibrato by the ‘70s.
One of our best shows was at the old Academy of Music in Manhattan. We did 2 shows, actually. The audience was quite close to the stage, & they were wonderful.
The sliding “Ahhhh” was Bobby’s trademark. He was a genuinely fine human being. We stayed at his home with his wife, Karen, and their kids while we were out in SoCal. We always had a good time, and I don’t think we ever had a bad show.
Our Memphis band, Montage, lost 2 members within in 6 months that year - including Bobby.

Jane H …. I remember this song very well, that came out when I was 9 years old. My mother would have the radio going all day long over the weekend, & I would be able to listen to all these great songs. Although I was a big fan of Elvis once I reached 12 years old, I still enjoyed lots of other songs, & always liked Bobby Vee as well as other great singers of my childhood & teen years. I am so glad I have lived through the 1950s, 60 & 70s, because I think we had the greatest music through those three decades. There were still good songs in the 80s & 90s too, but I thing the three decades before the 80s were just crammed with the most wonderful music & singers.

Among others, I grew up hearing his music, because Dad's a big fan. This one and "Rubber Ball" are probably my favorites.
I don't know if you know this, but Bobby Vee actually got his break as a result of a tragedy - he was originally from Fargo, North Dakota, which is directly west on the Minnesota state line from Moorehead. If the place name Moorehead, Minnesota, sounds familiar, it is because that was the next destination of the Winter Dance Party '59 tour, after Clear Lake, Iowa, which of course was the show, immediately after which Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper took their ill fated flight.
With three of the four headliners recently deceased, the call was put out for local talent to fill the bill, and fifteen year old Bobby Vee was one who answered.
    And the rest is rock-'n'-roll.

Most records back then were no longer than 2:45 because of the commercials they also had to play with the records. SOMETIMES a record would sneak out as a big hit that went past the 3:00 mark but, most often, it was done without anyone knowing about it! Case in point: "Let Me In" by The Sensations on Argo was over 3:00 but, when the record was pressed, they had the label read that the song was only about 2:40! They played it on the air, and then it was discovered that it was actually over 3:00 long but, by then, it was too late! The public heard it and it quickly became a huge hit!
