    FAQ:
Why is the shelter located in a natural drainage? Won't it get flooded in case of heavy rain?
No. What may look like a wash or natural drainage actually is the result of a former small sand mining site and dirt and stones being dumped in the pits afterwards, creating these small hills and indentations on/in the slight natural slope.
    -
How does it perform in the rain?
Though not filming much of it, i put a layer of stones between the logs and the dirt as a drainage. It works pretty well so far, the shelter is dry. I plan on digging a trench on the backside of the shelter and uphill to divert any runoff.
    -
What about a fireplace and/ or stove?
I plan on adding some kind of fireplace, maybe even a clay/ stone/ metal furnace inside the shelter.
    -
What is the purpose of the shelter?
I don't plan to hunt from it or anything. I built it for the joy of the process, for hanging out, do a bit of bushcrafting and maybe some overnighters in the summer.
    -
Is the shelter on private land?
    Yes, it is.
    -
How long did it take me to finish this shelter?
I started digging in May '17 which took me two months. I only had time on the weekends and finally completed the shelter with the small bench in January 2018.
    -
Did I plan it on my own or did I copy a design elsewhere?
I planned it on my own but changed my mind two times in the process. First time while digging, when I decided to rotate the shelter by 90 degrees and therefore had to expand the pit in the back lefthand corner, as you maybe can see in the pictures. The second big change was when I had halfway finished my initial plan but then thought of adding a kind of loft sice I realised the shelter would be quite small otherwise.

I love how people keep trying to tell you what's going to happen, AFTER you've experienced it.
"Super intelligent" person: "you're going to be soaked when it rains!"
You: "no I'm not, it's already rained. I stayed dry!"
You're a lot nicer than me, I'd be pointing out a lot of ignorance, in a very unkind manner, and making people feel as embarrassed as they deserve to feel. I used to do stuff like that when I was a little younger, and I loved it. You did a great job, better than any shelter I ever made. Keep up the great work!

Nice work dude. My dad and brother built a small cabin in the woods. Took us 2 months. It was 20x20 10 foot center ceiling and 6.5ft around the walls. Used pine and split logs for flat floor. Sealed with oakum. That was in 1965. Went back home to visit friends, still standing today. Our friends grand kids use it as a play house. 50 plus years!
    You did good young man.

I ran across a similar dugout shelter years ago when hiking in Virginia. It was raining hard and we spotted it cause we had wandered off the trail in the rain. It was built into a hillside and every dry inside. Some one had built shelf’s in it an there was a coffee can stove there. Which we used to warm up while we consulted our terrain map to figure out where we were.

Hey bruz love the work... Been living wild for many years and doing shit like this. Love it. If i may suggest two things haha...
First off. Plan for the future. Dig more than you want or need. It's easier to dig then and fill in a hole then to have to keep redigging when you come up with a great idea. Plan it as if you are going to have to live in it. Fireplace, storage, drainage. Heaps more work granted, but you look like you love it as much as i do so i think you wont mind hahahaha.
And secondly, make it and everything you do so you can stand in it. You'll thank me later when a heavy rain or for you boys a snow hits and you're stuck for a week or two or even a couple of days without being able to stand. Lying down just doesn't stretch you the way a good stand does haha
Keep up the good work lad, I'll definitely be watching your shit from now on.

    • @rhysforestlord
      @rhysforestlord 6 років тому +1

fuck yea mate. if i was you i'd go with the former. Raising the roof takes away your concealed status. Though on the other hand with raising the roof you could using existing wall work and uprights. so it is really a matter of less work and more visible versus more work and concealed. What are you thinking?
Are you thinking what if the world ends muhaharrrrr! or more cosy house to live in in sleepy town perfect world! hahaha both are completely valid solutions
whats the soil like? much clay? clay is a legendary material for building fire places into a wood wall without the danger and of course for packing walls with for that extra warmth away from the cold ground you're surrounded by

I didn't really chop many trees down. Most of the wood was deadfall, the rest deadstanding which you can often push over by hand. No living tree was harmed ;)

about 3 your lifetimes ago or more there was a story my teacher read to the class about a colonial woman who escaped the Indians. She found a blow down tree with a huge root ball that made the nice beginnings of a home like you made here. The story told of all the ways she survived there for a few years before finding her way home. I always wanted to build a home like hers. Never did but I did build a few nice camps in the mountains and hills. around my home. Best to you and may you continue having fun in the outdoors.

No it's not, if it rains all the water will run off into his shelter and it will get flooded. Vry badly designed and not thought out at all just cause of that. :P Worst possible way and location for chosing to build a shelter...

Nice to see you being able to do this and live out on your own in the woods if need be.
Most people your age can't use a can opener without needing a safe space.
Water run off is a huge thing so try routing water flow away from and around the dug out.
    Good job so far.

@@tristanpepper792 I can see that I have offended you... my statement was quite simple, that it's a bad trade, to trade your real life to play pretend in a video game. There are large numbers of people whose lives are significantly less productive because they've made that bad trade. You are correct, that watching a lot of movies or too much reading can be negative also if done in excess. I do my best to stick to educational things. I'm sorry to have offended your feelings. @@BenderBendingRodrigue2 The basal claim that you're not living your life by playing a video game is foolish in of it's self. It exactly like going to someone that's reading and saying stop wasting your life. "I like to stick to educational things" sounds like the comment of a person that thinks they're smart but leaves a wake of people scratching their heads at how self righteously dumb they are. Video games are a waste of time like anything else is. It's not different than any other activity. And yes you did offend by your overwhelming ignorance and purely ignoble intention in your comment.
