Well. Not really. There was a recession, high unemployment, an intractable inflation problem that continued for years, and a general feeling of malaise and decline in America. That is what the song is addressing. Along with Dennis DeYoungs’ longstanding marriage. So nostalgia is a disguise and THESE are the best of times
@@RoadTripzz14Well said. I'm 67. I love the past, including music, movies, sports, and people. But damn, I'm also thrilled about the present, and I look so forward to what the future has in store. They were able to figure out; I got Double Vision by Foreigner, LOL!!!!

That's actually what brought me to this video. He still sounds great 73.
Just saw it. This should be the worlds rally song.
watched it, his voice is still amazing !
bethanycat I saw it! It’s so great and appropriate for this time!!
One of the best voices ever. Absolutely effortless
No words..they are such a classic 🥰
Hello 👋 Renee
How're you doing.
Thanks for this comment, I'm nothing without fans like you who appreciate my musical craftiness
It's nice meeting you here.
I’ll never get sick of listening to this song. Styx would have to be one of the most under rated groups.
True, and this song is maybe Styx's most underrated one.
Without a doubt you are correct
they are no t underrated in my world!
Who else is crying to this song in October 2020?
"The headline says these are the worst of times"
When Pandora’s box was opened and pestilence was set upon us, despite the ravages of fear and despair, remained the saving grace - Hope.
@@bawbremy Yes!
As I type
It's December and I'm crying !
Going through a rough time at present and... yeah...
So relevant today!!!! Enjoy your family!! Take advantage of this time to grow closer to your kids and rekindle your friendship with the love of your life!
I just discovered this song 2 days ago and I can’t stop listening to it. I must have played 50 times already and it’s still crack to my ears
Happened to me in the 80´s, so I understand you!
Please watch this band cover with my very own husband on vocals
The more things change, the more they stay the same. Still just as relevant as when it first came out, sadly.
Oh! We're so lucky to have had it in the 80s, happy to share it with you now tho!
@@apfelprincess45 Greatest Decade Ever.
Dennis was Styx.
Absolutely
They don't make em like this anymore. You won't find any music like this in 2023. God I miss the 80's!!!
The best Of Time 80's ❤
Best of times, the 80's were. Thanks for bringing it back.
I was born in 81... 80s n 90s we're unbelievable.. greatest music, movies, tv shows , cartoons.. I even dream I'm in the 80s most nights
The backing vocals of this song are amazing. The best of times.
Who is here after watching 2020 Dennis rock it at his piano at home???
me
I'm in!
you got it.
Same here. in my 50s, Can't beat the great 80s music. 🎤🎶
Me!
One of the greatest memories I'll ever have was getting my allowance after doing my chores and asking my dad to take me to turtle's record store so I could get the new styx album. My dad said "sticks? Hell if you want sticks there are a bunch in back in the field".
That is similar to my mother telling me Christmas in 1978 when I opened an album I requested: "I didn't think I was going to find it, then I told the guy at Record Realm I was looking for an album with something about foreigners and eye problems" . . . They were able to figure out; I got Double Vision by Foreigner, LOL!!!!
Good old Budget Tapes & Records on Broadway. If only I could step into a time machine. Life was so wonderful back then. Late into the night listening to my new albums on a Montgomery Ward stereo with those big headphones with the coiled cord. Just the glow of the stereo in the room dreaming about my school crush.
@@sokodad same here. You just pretty much described my late elementary school and middle school years. I was lucky enough to have my own phone line so there were some nights that we would stay on the phone till 11 or even midnight( this was middle school of course). What I wouldn't give to go back to those days and nights. Just good ole simple times
hahhahahahahahah
@@bubwal23xifan and the sleep WAS heaven...didnt want to get up on a Monday after a weeknd with friends...even worse if it was a rainy Monday...that 🛌 bed felt even greater
So relevant for today, loved them back in the day. As a new Catholic convert, this takes on a whole new meaning for me personally. Look to eternity, look for that love of Christ for eternity. Nothing better!
Hi Kristen,hope you’re okay ?
Good lord, he's got such an awesome vibrato. This is great stuff. Styx is a great band and there's a reason they've stood the test of time

Dennis DeYoung was one of the biggest musical genius of the XX Century along with Lennon, Lynne, Dylan and few more...
I REALLY wish the summer winds will bring back paradise to our lives, these are the worst of times, a "no-life" condition
ps I Love Styx
Gen x, is proving to be the most motivated.
I saw Styx when I was 17 in 1978 ..it was the best of times ❤

i was there as well fantastic gig
Yet, 1978 was BEFORE The Best of Times. 🤣
This is Australia 2019, i am 56 years of age and i remember when one of my first girlfriends and were together this song was playing and it was a very exciting time in our lives, because it was of our first love, and the music was fantastic and this was the music that made our love even more comportment in these days.I still listen to music of this era, and it does not really matter from which country you are from this song is very important to you youth and be proud of it.
The 80s were “” The Best Of Times””!!!
They were. The 90s were ok (just ok). 2001 the world went to shit and nothing has been the same since. Where is my time machine? I'd go back to 1980 in a heartbeat.
Lisa Kay 100 YESSSS❤❤❤❤
but this song was written when jimmiy carter was president
Lisa Kay 100 I agree also I feel the 70s were also
Lisa Kay 100 you are so right. The 2000's have been crap for me, I wish I could turn back time. I would go back to the 70's just to make sure I caught all of the 80's again.
Yes, absolutely 70' n 80's songs are more beautiful 😃💕
Styx is my favorite band of all times!!!!
I just saw Dennis' home video of this awesome song! He's STILL got it!!! This song is special to me as it was my high school class of '81's class song and still one of my all time favorite Styx songs!
I have seen it.
As soon as I heard the first line I was right back in high school. So many good memories attached to this song.
This is absolutely phenomenal music and lyrics and vocals - a fantastic band with an important message!
Damn… back when music had meaning. Talent like no other time in history! 2:36
Tommy Shaw’s guitar solo at 2:11 is amazing. Love Styx and Dennis unique voice.
true, they are both very talented, I just hope they will reunite for 1 very very last time for the sake of us ( the fans) , and sing this song at the very last as bonus song.
This is the perfect song for the CV and quarantine
Still gives me chills. Love this song.
Me too
and me!@@Ml278yk
Nope- 2022 Baby. Happy Birthday To me. Grew up in Chicago, where Styx is from. This was also our HS Prom song 1985. Those truly were the best of times!!🤟
I am 13 and I love these songs my dad always played them for me and I am so grateful because this and many other songs will forever be in my memory because they got me through everything literally. I wish I was alive to witness all these songs when to band was young I went to a concert and it was great but my dad said it was always better when they were younger
Andrew Egan I’m also 13 and my dad always played these songs I prefer these songs over todays garbage
True
Cool stuff. Best music
baretta369 wow
You have a wonderful dad for sharing this type of music with you.
RIP John Panozzo - remembered, never forgotten.
Styx for Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame 2020 class...
The line about people locked inside ,end of paradise, me and my wife cried, she was dying of an internal ailment,, Covid was all around, but we had the best of times. RIP Karen
What a great vocalist and songwriter. His vocal vibrato is very smooth and natural.
The vibrato is theatrical, sublime, perfect!
Its his voice...so clear. Amazing actually.
Who's watching in 2024! This real. Music real musicianship 💯 vs the crap today OMG 😳 man this takes me back to 8th grade 1981 our theme song for our school year was this song the best of times for sure 💯💯 nothing can touch our music 🎶🎶🎶🎤 gen x baby 🎸🎸
Me too!
I seen them Friday last week amazing
Who's here rockin to Styx with me in 2023!!!
Here, Dennis’s voice is an instrument equal to any guitar or drums...
Dennis DY is the heart of Styx !
Steven Berry The pride of Chicago, Illinois although Tommy Shaw is from Alabama.
Of course he is!! Dennis and Panozzo bros started band in their garage. James lived down the street. Tommy came years later.
Tommy was the heart of Styx!!!!!
I love Tommy Shaw!
Andrea Perry so do I
ONE OF THE BEST SONGS FROM STYX.
I was born on 2003, but this song makes me want to remember the moments I never had on the 80’s
one of the reasons i love songs like these, really helps a lot for you to imagine yourself in the characters situation in movies that are time based on the 80’s
I grew up as a teen in the 80s so I'm gen x and I can't believe that it took me this long to realize Styx was among my top ten favorite bands of all times. Boy were they good! 😀
Great things sometimes take a while to truly appreciate
Takes me back to high school 1981, those were good times back then.
They sure were! (class of’86).

Those were the best of times! Their music lives on and is iconic and WOW POSITIVE! no ripping on ex's no slurs no PC crap
Styx music never gets old hearing. They were an amazing group. I wish they were still playing together.
Hell Yeah 😮😮Those cheeseburger NIGHTS😅😅😅😊😊😊😂😂
Without Dennis DeYoung there's no STYX, period.
However he had a great band!!
Agreed!!
For the.past 21 years i felt that way too i finally got over it
stick
I disagree. As amazing as he is, they are still awesome in concert and put on a wonderful show. I think without Tommy Shaw, the Styx sound would be gone.

This was STYX at it's best of times. At the apex of their collaborations, the best line-up of musicians that sang to me on my younger years (I'll be 60 in three months), Dennis DeYoung, Tommy Shaw, the Panozzo brothers John and Chuck and James Young. This song brings some of the best memories I've ever had.The best of music to soothe the anguish and pains of the worst of times we're living today. God bless us all!
I just realized how much the music of Styx defined my teens and 20's in the 70's. What an awesome time to party down.
One of the greatest American rock band!
Child of "Let It Be," "Maybe I'm Amazed," and "Live and Let Die." Styx could do the McCartneyesque ballad with the best of them.
