Well. Not really. There was a recession, high unemployment, an intractable inflation problem that continued for years, and a general feeling of malaise and decline in America. That is what the song is addressing. Along with Dennis DeYoungs’ longstanding marriage. So nostalgia is a disguise and THESE are the best of times

Sounds almost like the Camden NJ show I just saw on July 28th. It was my first ever concert at 61 years old, and I really enjoyed it. I agree, it took me back to a simpler time in my life as well. I was there with a friend who was visiting from Florida, and she was wearing a Styx Tampa 1993 shirt, which was pretty unique there. I also agree with some of the Dennis Deyoung comments. It is very unfortunate they're not all together, and it's basically ego driven. They need to put that crap aside for the fans and get together in a good tour! All in all, it was a really good time!
DDY is often forgotten as one of the great rock voices of his era. People recall Perry, Gramm, Bowie, Cronin, and Mercury but DeYoung belongs among those greats.

@@AngelOfDeath420 I basically boo Shaw and JY. The other 3 are talented musicians and not the ones selfishly depriving the fans of a farewell tour with Dennis. They say "The fans are what is what's most important" but it's BS. Obviously their Egos are, or they'd do it one last time for the fans. TS says he's "over it and has let go of his grudges". Well, Styx with DDY fans say "Prove it" or it's just PR lip service.

I grew up listening to Styx and loved Dennis DeYoung's and Tommy Shaw's vocals, as well as JY's. The whole group had such harmony. I didn't forget the Panozzo Brothers!
I grew up as a teen in the 80s so I'm gen x and I can't believe that it took me this long to realize Styx was among my top ten favorite bands of all times. Boy were they good! 😀
I had watched a mini-series for A Tale of Two Cities and read the book just before or after hearing this song for the first time and I always associated it with the French Revolution and thought of that show, which sucked because I love the song but couldn't stop myself from associating it with decapitations (It was the Best of Times; it was the worst of times). Almost 40 years later I have something more current to associate it with -- and not as bloody.
Such a timeless song! Very unsettling how predictive it is, but an overall BEAUTIFUL message. This whole lockdown thing will either bring our spirits down, or help us become stronger than ever. One of the greatest memories I'll ever have was getting my allowance after doing my chores and asking my dad to take me to turtle's record store so I could get the new styx album. My dad said "sticks? Hell if you want sticks there are a bunch in back in the field".
That is similar to my mother telling me Christmas in 1978 when I opened an album I requested: "I didn't think I was going to find it, then I told the guy at Record Realm I was looking for an album with something about foreigners and eye problems" . . . They were able to figure out; I got Double Vision by Foreigner, LOL!!!!
Good old Budget Tapes & Records on Broadway. If only I could step into a time machine. Life was so wonderful back then. Late into the night listening to my new albums on a Montgomery Ward stereo with those big headphones with the coiled cord. Just the glow of the stereo in the room dreaming about my school crush.

The Tommy Shaw band is not Styx without Dennis. The biggest fans miss you Buddy 🎹 🎤🎶✌️❤️
Very true. Both extremely talented, together, unstoppable. Not the same.
Makes me sad I booed them when they opened for Def Leppard
@@AngelOfDeath420 I basically boo Shaw and JY. The other 3 are talented musicians and not the ones selfishly depriving the fans of a farewell tour with Dennis. They say "The fans are what is what's most important" but it's BS. Obviously their Egos are, or they'd do it one last time for the fans. TS says he's "over it and has let go of his grudges". Well, Styx with DDY fans say "Prove it" or it's just PR lip service.
Denis is awesome but Larry Gowan killed it too!!! Saw them with REO Speedwagon and Loverboy a few years ago. One of the best concerts ever!!!!!!!
This is absolutely phenomenal music and lyrics and vocals - a fantastic band with an important message!
"When people lock their doors and hide inside, rumor has it it's the end of paradise."
Still relevant 40 years later. Thanks, Styx.
Yeah---I thought of that as well.
Thought of this song as well, and also thought how this song is ultimately optimistic. This too shall pass!!!!!! "When I'm alone with you, everything's alright"
Me too. Stupid Coronavirus. 😞
Before corona, we really were in the best of times and most of us never knew it.
Someone in Paris, Rome or London should sing this one from those balcony concerts that are quite popular now
What a great vocalist and songwriter. His vocal vibrato is very smooth and natural.
Good lord, he's got such an awesome vibrato. This is great stuff. Styx is a great band and there's a reason they've stood the test of time
Who's watching in 2024! This real. Music real musicianship 💯 vs the crap today OMG 😳 man this takes me back to 8th grade 1981 our theme song for our school year was this song the best of times for sure 💯💯 nothing can touch our music 🎶🎶🎶🎤 gen x baby 🎸🎸
Me too!
I seen them Friday last week amazing
It was out theme song for the graduating class of 1981
Agreed. Stuff now is complete garbage!
Me too
So relevant today!!!! Enjoy your family!! Take advantage of this time to grow closer to your kids and rekindle your friendship with the love of your life!
Dennis DeYoung: one of the greatest voices of all time.
Yes Luke .... for sure .... he is awesome
I absolutely agree!
concordo plenamente!
Steve perry is overrated. DDY is the GOAT!
Still has kept the voice intact...alot of singers from that era have lost their pipes. Dennis still sounds amazing
My highschool days memories ❤🎉 1:54 The Best!!...
This song brings back fond memories of the best times of my life!! The 70's to mid 80's,The world was much better back then, and people were much friendlier, and music was way more fun and peaceful. Not Violent, and degrading like nowadays, I really, really wish I could go back to those days, I miss them so, Great Memories.
michael chavez What scares me is: 20 years from now will we/people be saying that about THESE times now? Flash ahead to 2040..."wow, I really miss the good old days of 2020".
Okay, I'm just a glass-half-empty person I guess. I totally agree with your comment. :)
I wish I was during them
👍💯
Yep I was there living every bit of it .. the 80s were the best time .. you could to literally what ever you wanted great musicians.. fantastic ladies.. 😍 .. work was easy .. the party’s where full of fun .. nothing was rally complicated
Couldn't have said it better myself. THOSE were the best of times 1976-1986
Wow, I never knew the opening 0:35 Was actually wih you tonight, with you tonight. I just thought it was keyboards. Thank you for posting and sharing!
What an amazing talent rich band. Good times back then. Life's short. Thanks for the memories and thank you Jesus for loving me.
Best of times, the 80's were. Thanks for bringing it back.
I am rollerskating as a 7 year old to this and Reo Speedwagon and Donna Summer. Best of times!
You must be a '73 model like myself
Me too! Born in 67.
Omg, roller skating was my religion.
Yes, absolutely 70' n 80's songs are more beautiful 😃💕
Agreed. I was in the Navy from 1975 to 1983 and experienced a lot of different music.😊
I miss those times. They really were the best
I just realized how much the music of Styx defined my teens and 20's in the 70's. What an awesome time to party down.
This is Australia 2019, i am 56 years of age and i remember when one of my first girlfriends and were together this song was playing and it was a very exciting time in our lives, because it was of our first love, and the music was fantastic and this was the music that made our love even more comportment in these days.I still listen to music of this era, and it does not really matter from which country you are from this song is very important to you youth and be proud of it.
The vibrato is theatrical, sublime, perfect!
I grew up listening to Styx and loved Dennis DeYoung's and Tommy Shaw's vocals, as well as JY's. The whole group had such harmony. I didn't forget the Panozzo Brothers!
RIP John Panozzo - remembered, never forgotten.
Styx for Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame 2020 class...
One of the best voices ever. Absolutely effortless
I surely wish they would get back together for just one show they have never been the same without Dennis!
As soon as I heard the first line I was right back in high school. So many good memories attached to this song.
I’ll never get sick of listening to this song. Styx would have to be one of the most under rated groups.
True, and this song is maybe Styx's most underrated one.
Without a doubt you are correct
they are no t underrated in my world!
That guitar riff starting at 2:10 always gives me the feels no matter how many times I listen. Love this song all the way through!
I grew up as a teen in the 80s so I'm gen x and I can't believe that it took me this long to realize Styx was among my top ten favorite bands of all times. Boy were they good! 😀
Great things sometimes take a while to truly appreciate
Those were the best times of our lives. We just didn't know it back then. Love the 80s❤
I started listing to Styx when I was in the USMC back in the summer of 2002. I am still listening 22 years later.
This is the Theme song for 2020 for me personally.. incredible song!
Gunsandrosalina Padtwo
Listen to the song, it’s about making the Best out of the Worst of times. And keep your politics away from me
I had watched a mini-series for A Tale of Two Cities and read the book just before or after hearing this song for the first time and I always associated it with the French Revolution and thought of that show, which sucked because I love the song but couldn't stop myself from associating it with decapitations (It was the Best of Times; it was the worst of times). Almost 40 years later I have something more current to associate it with -- and not as bloody.
@Gunsandrosalina Padtwo I bet you are a delight to know.
Gunsandrosalina Padtwo 40 degrees in mid April, “cLImaTe ChAngE”
Such a timeless song! Very unsettling how predictive it is, but an overall BEAUTIFUL message. This whole lockdown thing will either bring our spirits down, or help us become stronger than ever. If you care to watch, I made a video about that... and a group of (sticks) make a fun appearance. 😄
Peace, everybody!!✌💓

Those were the best of times! Their music lives on and is iconic and WOW POSITIVE! no ripping on ex's no slurs no PC crap
Just introducing my 26 yr old to Styx . All their music is relevant. Still. Or maybe more so.
Here I am again saying the same thing and feelings like a teenager. I’m 52 now. Makes me feel like a teenager still
53 here. I hear ya. Here he is today: ua-cam.com/video/vVzx-VO0RpI/v-deo.html
Great song from great times!

Simply still get goosebumps when I here this !!!! 70's and early 80's are the best !!!!! Music was incredibly free !!!

Nope- 2022 Baby. Happy Birthday To me. Grew up in Chicago, where Styx is from. This was also our HS Prom song 1985. Those truly were the best of times!!🤟
Just an awesome song, timeless classic, that will still be played and listened to thousands of years from now.
Just saw them last night, great show!
One of the very first songs MTV played in August 1981. Can you believe it’s been 37 years?! I remember listening to this song a lot the Spring and Summer of 1981...What a good time to be a kid.
It was the best time.
It was the best time in my opinion
@@sokodad same here. You just pretty much described my late elementary school and middle school years. I was lucky enough to have my own phone line so there were some nights that we would stay on the phone till 11 or even midnight( this was middle school of course). What I wouldn't give to go back to those days and nights. Just good ole simple times
hahhahahahahahah
@@bubwal23xifan and the sleep WAS heaven...didnt want to get up on a Monday after a weeknd with friends...even worse if it was a rainy Monday...that 🛌 bed felt even greater
My father always said Styx was the best rock-n-roll band Love You Dad !! Gone but not from my heart

No words..they are such a classic 🥰
Hello 👋 Renee
How're you doing.
Thanks for this comment, I'm nothing without fans like you who appreciate my musical craftiness
It's nice meeting you here.
This song is a masterpiece! I was 12 when it hit the airwaves and I knew I liked it, but now I appreciate how truly great it is.
Even though the world is in turmoil and turning upside down, this song gives me hope to face the problems of today. Saw Styxx when I was 17 and will always remember that concert. They are timeless!
Anyone wanna vote for this to be the 2020 rally song?
Let's vote! I vote yes!
Some of the best music
Hmmm..ive been listening to the abc Monday night football classic theme to get me motivated...
@paul sticks World wide it's estimated 125,000 babies are murdered everyday. I'm sure Many who had abortions are the same people who call you a murderer for going outside without a mask.. Priorities right.. But of course, that's Your choice! I'd say, Quite a few hypocrites. But, Maybe it's just a well deserved Judgement.
I vote Yes!!!
1981 im 14 years old and they really were the best of times 💯 1981!!!
@@drewrosecrans9728 me same age then 14 years old
I was 15 in 81 and this GEM has been a favorite of mine ever since. 👍 criminally underrated song.
I was 8, but I recall being happy despite family turmoil (divorce) - life seemed to have so much promise back then.
13 here. Wow wasn't it awesome? Game rooms, cruising, awesome bands.
I was 12 and went to my first concert Paradise Theater with my parents...
(they were cool)
I just saw Dennis' home video of this awesome song! He's STILL got it!!! This song is special to me as it was my high school class of '81's class song and still one of my all time favorite Styx songs!
I have seen it.
