Isn’t that how life usually works … people drift in and out of your life from the past … reminiscing for a few fleeting moments in time … then those folks drift away again. Sometimes they return … sometimes … you keep the memories alive in your heart … your mind. One day you catch a song on the radio … much like Desert Moon. The cobwebs are swept away … and you are again with those folks from years past. For a few moments …. Time reverses and all those emotions come back.

Could not have said it better. Had some great friends back in the 80’s, a couple have passed, some I lost contact with, but 2 still remain great friends. Don’t catch up often but when we do it’s like time stood still. I always wonder what happened to those lost friends, hope they are doing well.

This song came out when I was a teen. Just a kid. Now I'm 51 and I can say this song and video, in an extremely simplistic way, summarizes life. You'll never forget that first love. Going home and visiting the old spots is sweet and sad at the same time. You realize everything that used to be is no longer. Good buddies are still good buddies though. That never changes. The same jokes and stories will always be told and shared decade after decade as long as there's time to get together and talk.

My mind flashed back to my first girlfriend and how she and I would just drive around aimlessly for hours without a single care in the world. I honestly think anyone who was a teen or young adult in the 80s would go back in a heartbeat and stay there --- we've seen nothing in this world since 2000 but bitterness and anger and people not wanting to hang out with each other anymore --- those of us who grew up in the 70s and 80s remember the good times portrayed in this video --- when all you needed was some good friends and some backyard BBQ and football to put a smile on your face --- nobody gave a shit about looking at a stupid little screen filled with hateful messages!

I never would have admitted it as a 15 year old in 84, but I loved this song and video. When he gave that cherry ‘65 to his brother, even back then, the tears came. It’s crazy. I was 15, never had a girlfriend or been in love, but this song me made long for a time I had yet to experience. In the four decades since, love has come and gone many times. And every time, I find myself revisiting this song. THAT, friends, is the hallmark of good writing, a little cheesy for some, but some of those lyrics simply rip at the pieces of my heart. Thanks Dennis…

Was it a girly song or something? I don't quite get why u wouldn't admit u liked it... surely we all grow up and we don't give a fuck what kind of songs we liked or not... what matters is what they meant to us, what they have meant to us through the years and decades... I was 10, so too young then to realize the true meaning and depth of the lyrics - it's a different story for me nowadays.

The 80s without a shadow of doubt the greatest ever decade musically wise especially up to mid 80s. The music, ,bands ,solo artists, ,the images, the contrast in music, the originality we will not see its like again. Anyone who grew up in this era know exactly what I'm talking about. Even TV Miami Vice etc Movies, Breakfast Club ,Ferris Bueller,Sixteen Candles, etc .Hard to put into words what a special time it was but those of us who were there know exactly how special it was.The furtherwe go awayfromthe 80s the more we realisee how lucky and privilegedwe were to have been there. We will not see its like again. .Thank goodness for UA-cam for giving us the opportunity to revisit those times that make us happy and sad at the same time yearning for a truly fabulous era.

The 80's were the best. Everybody gets all nostalgic about their own favorite era, but think about it. Technology was pretty decent without being intrusive and overbearing. A person could still make mistakes in life and overcome them without being hounded by those mistakes for a lifetime, or being publicly crucified within seconds for making them. It wasn't perfect, but with all of the thought policing that goes on nowadays (say what you like, but it is 1000x times worse and more Orwellian than it was back then), relentlessness of technology, toxic cynicism, etc....I'd go back today if I could, in a heartbeat. A person could work hard, study, build a life and get ahead, improve their lot in life. Health care was pretty decent. Again, not going to get drawn into ridiculous and pointless debates about details that I think (yep, I'm less than perfect) are comparatively petty, or the obvious imperfections of the universe versus our own unrealistic expectations, etc. Smart phones and the internet are great, sure, but a person could still make his/her way in the world just fine back then....and live, and love. Paper maps, phone books, a little effort and dive into the mysteries of the open road (to mix a few metaphors lol). Sure, I'm happy now...but it is increasingly the case that I'm happy in spite of "things," not because of them. The world was indeed a better place back then. Rant and flame away....either you get what I'm saying, or you don't. I'm not here to convince anyone of anything. Peace, y'all...and '85 forever!

The funny thing is even back then I knew the times were special, so unique, so precious. Yet I lived them as though they'd be here forever. Ah! The naiveties of youth. Yet I'm so privileged to have been in my prime at that time. And experienced the best of times.

I went to Santa Paula on Saturday, September 14, 2024, to see if the historic train depot and the Mill building were still there, and they were! The Mill is an Agricultural Museum, and the train depot is the Commerce Office and Art Museum. It was an honor to be there where this video and song were filmed and recorded.

Totally agree. This is my favorite video of all time. It’s beautifully put together, hits exactly the right spot. Dennis DeYoung once said the video may be better than the song. Maybe so. Regardless, that last verse, man … whew. 😢

At this time, Dennis wasn't just being a " reluctant " solo artist, but he actually had screen tested for a several movies but had to turn them down for one reason or another. You can see he's a natural, besides being an insanely talent musician. Great tune and brings back so many memories of the 80's.

This is my favorite song of all time. I even drive the same convertible Mustang as in the video, I remember my first love when we met in 1984. I use to hold her tightly in the convertible gazing at the stars. My heart aches as I lost her. They say first love never runs dry

Summer of 1984...........I will remember this summer and this song until I leave this world. Love you Dennis, please keep doing videos, you are a hero of my youth, I now feel so old, when I see you do things online it makes me feel a little less old and a little more still relevant. Styx rocked, you still rock. I was 13 when this album was released. Dennis, most of your fans are younger than you. I am close to your age, we will not remain relevant forever, but I treasure all you work, both solo and the ones with Styx.

I heard this song the other day driving around my old hometown and I pulled into the lot of my old middle school and just closed my eyes and listened and thought of all the times I had at that school back in the 80s...
What a life we had as children growing up in that decade...all the memories that ran through my mind as this song played...I remembered all the times we played ball on that field...all the school dances...all the trouble we got into...and I remembered kissing you Tanya for the first time...my first kiss at age 11...we thought we were so in love...It was all so innocent and we were kids and we didn't have a care in the world...I am sorry kids these days will not have any of that...we were so lucky

Is this the train to Desert Moon
    Was all she said
    But I knew I'd heard
    that stranger's voice before
I turned to look into her eyes
    But she moved away
She was standing in the rain
Trying hard to speak my name
They say first love never runs dry
The waiter poured our memories into tiny cup
We stumbled over words we longed to hear
We talked about the dreams we'd lost, or given up
When a whistle cut the night
And shook silence from our lives
As the last train rolled towards to the dune
Those summer nights when we were young
    We bragged of things
    We'd never done
    We were dreamers
    Only dreamers
    And in our haste
    To grow too soon
    We left our innocence
    On Desert Moon
    We were dreamers
    Only dreamers
    On Desert Moon
    On Desert Moon
    On Desert Moon
    Desert Moon
    [Instrumental Interlude]
I still can hear the whisper of the summer night
It echoes in the corners of my heart
The night we stood and waited for the desert train
All the words we meant to say
    All the chances swept away
Still remain on the road to the dune
    Those summer nights
    When we were young
    We bragged of things
    We'd never done
    We were dreamers
    Only dreamers
    Moments pass
    And time moves on
    But dreams remain
    For just as long
    As there's dreamers
    All the dreamers
    On Desert Moon
    On Desert Moon
    On Desert Moon
    Desert Moon
