  • I todays video we take a first look back at an old classic by SSI, Panzer General. The grandfather of the Panzer Corps, Strategic Mind, and a half dozen other games, Panzer General is an all time classic wargame that created a sub genre of wargames that have survived for 30 years.
Panzer General was a classic for me on PlayStation 1, so in todays video I take a look at the PS1 version of the game in what may become a weekly series looking at classic retro wargame titles.

In Panzer General, anti-tank guns are really only meant for defense or for attacking weak units. An anti-tank gun attacking a tank always shoots second, no matter how high the Initiave stat is on the anti-tank gun. An anti-tank gun that is defending against a tank tends to shoot first though against an attacking tank, as long as the anti-tank gun has a higher Initiative stat.

Aaaah... USSR. This is where the grinding begins for your Army. Taking the route through Kiev and aiming for Minor Victories in Moscow 41, Moscow 42 and Kharkov will max out the number of scenarios and you have enough opportunity to level up all your troops to 15 by Moscow 43. Setting difficulty to hard from now on helps as well, as you will have to plow through more enemy units that way. Nothing more satisfying in this game than attacking Washington with a 15-only army.
However, by messing up France you've blocked that path. Curious if and when you'll make it to Sealion 43 and in what shape your army will emerge after that.
Anyway, thank you for providing these videos. It's great to get a few more fresh ideas out of this game, even after almost 30 years ❤

Given that he's already had units die and that these scenarios are supposed to be some of the hardest, if not the hardest themselves, then I suspect not well. At least it'll be fun to watch him struggle, though.

You’re leaving enemy forces behind you to the south with an airfield.

I like how the devs sneak that down there way out of the way. Maybe not so bad on PC since its more zoomed out and the strat map is clearer (I wish THG would just zoom out one level now and again as much as I enjoy the ultra zoom for detail). But its a good test to check the player is actually paying attention to the whole map and not solely blinded by the objectives. Is the AI smart enough to punish the oversight? probably not however

I remembered this as a difficult scenario but it really wasn't when I played it yesterday. Once through the border units it was a cakewalk. The next scenario though is very difficult to get a major in iirc.

My thought process was the weather is going to get bad soon so I didn't wanna over rely on air power. But I had hoped 88's would be better than that lol.

Wasn't before the Operation, Luftwaffe recon planes roamed USSR skies nearly unmolested ? There's supposed to be not very much fog of war at first turn.

You should only ever upgrade or buy bridge engineers as infantry. Never buy a towed 88, use stukas to destroy tanks. Early on use Pz III J in tank vs tank and PZ4Ds against infantry, arty, at. I love this game.

Its too long since I played this, doesn't AAA work on the hexes next to it?

AAA can cover multiple hexes. Depends on the range of the type.

Even in PC2, judging enemy line of sight is not so simple. I find the rule of thumb is simply that if you're not absolutely certain it's safe, don't move them the far forward or don't mount them at all. The losses aren't ever really with the extra distance, if you're playing well that is, and if you're behind then more losses don't really improve the situation.
