- This is part 1 of a 4 part series, all of which you can see here flight-insight.com/post/ifr-c... showing a full IFR checkride flight out of Capital City Airport in Pennsylvania.
We're going to be flying to 9D4, then KMDT, then back to KCXY. Fly along with us!

This is incredibly invaluable content! As a controller at Harrisburg Approach this was a really helpful look at the other side of the operation. We'll definitely share it with our controllers and hope to see you in our airspace someday soon.
Glad to hear it! Looking forward to getting back up to PA one of these flights.
Starting my IFR flight training in exactly one week. I've been using your videos to help prepare for the real life stuff, as I got a 100% on my written, and your videos truly are the best I've ever come across.
From one UA-camr to another, thank you for your awesome videos. I know countless hours of work go behind just a simple 8 minute video and sometimes it can be draining.
From one pilot to another, thank you for providing such great information in small, bite-sized servings. Looking forward to coming back and updating you in 2-3 months (hopefully) I'll be IFR certified by then. Wishing you blue skies and tailwinds man!
Good job on your written. You can’t go wrong watching the excellent videos on this channel.
Hey - me again!
Got my IFR ticket today! Just wanted to say thanks again for your videos. Couldn't have done it without you! Time to go punch some holes in the clouds! ☁️✈️
Perfect timing I got my checkride tomorrow😎
Good luck! You’ll do great!
This is some next level training and preparation. Great content!
Great video for prep! However, nothing can prepare you for the... special... personalities of some DPE's. Unfortunately the ones in my area are quite hit and miss... You might get one who is the epitome of professionalism, or you might get one who is disrespectful, condescending, and actively tries to demoralize the pilot he or she is evaluating.
@my last DPE… Jesus man.
This is too painfully relatable.
Thanks a million. Amazing content as always.
Excellent, thanks a lot for this really nice IFR training video 👍
0:12 hey that sure looks like the 31 approach for harrisburg, and then capital city across the water! I'm flying approaches into there now!
Perfect timing in doing ifr training in Harrisburg starting this week
6:07 don't forget to inform departure that you are on runway heading on check-in.
Thanks for this! Super timely for me as I have an instrument checkride in 2 weeks. 😲
Same here
Hey me too! Good luck guys!
Good luck to us! 🙂
Haha good timing. Had my single engine IFR flight test this morning. (Canada)
The scariest part about the videos when you said you were flying with the kap 140
why did he need to change from cessna 518 to skyhawk 518 ?? trying to learn radio protocol
Great presentation. I recently passed my instrument check ride and a couple of notes from my experience might help others. My DPE would not allow me to use ForeFlight. I could only use either paper approach plates or screen shots on my iPad. Also, he did not allow me to use any map functions on the GPS. I could only use the Nav page demo'd on your bottom GPS. I did fine, but it would have helped to practice those limitations more than I did.
Wow some DPEs are still prohibiting foreflight? There's an argument to teaching fundamentals but there's also an important argument that students should be savvy with the latest technology, especially in IFR.
@@flightinsight9111 Agreed, but my DPE wanted to make certain I couldn't see the airplane icon overlay on the approach plates. Even disabling the feature wasn't enough. He said paper or screenshots, no ForeFlight!
He’s gonna get reported for that because the Ipad is the charts these days.
I 100% would have canceled and chose someone who knows how to fly post WWII, that is ridiculous.
One question, at 7:15 you explicitly mention a DME readout - do you mean that literally (as opposed to 'great circle' GPS distance) ?
Mock multiengine checkride?
Huh that’s crazy the VSI can be totally wrong and the plane is still allowed to go IFR. Now that I think about it it’s not in 91.205 GRABCARD or A TOMATO FLAMES so that’s probably why.
immediate question. If DPE fail your GPS in this Cessna, then your radio won't work for you, correct? Flight should be terminated by return to airfield with appropriate squawk code dialed in.
the radio will still work.
