Same in every industry. Someone comes up with some "hypothetical" measurement, or a different way to measure and give misleading numbers. Air compressors, Data storage on computers, the bandwidth ratings given, speaker output, power output on PSUs, etc.

Maybe it will be able to recharge faster without having the drawback of decreasing life at an accelerated rate. I recall reading a while ago about lithium ion batteries being able to put out more power and store more after they have 5 or 10% of their rated life in recharges. I wonder if that is what we are seeing out of the beloved 3AH battery. Maybe the 4AH needs some time to stretch its legs.

Most people buy due to marketing, not reality unfortunately. The consumer base is so large these days that companies can care a lot less than they used to.
The rate of industry change on reporting real numbers will be proportional to the number of subscribers and popularity of this channel. If this channel toiled in obscurity, nothing would change. Nearly 1/2 million subscribers to a tool channel focused on objective data? Well that’s a HUGE deal. So happy these guys are here doing this and keeping the industries feet to the fire. 🔥
This is what years and years of marketing garbage on batteries gets you. A convoluted line of "high performance, high performance +, ultimate performance" high output performance +," and on and on... Un necessarily confusing, and while backwards compatibility is great, everyone thinks they have the best battery because they're all marketed as best, and when a new one comes out how do they put it above what they just called best? By making the name mumbo jumbo... Glad the difference wasn't much, and it was nice to see the 9ah pack deliver what it did, minus the confusion.
You're not wrong. If you pause at 2:06 and read our email mid page we say as much. Even as a power tool YT channel, we get confused on their battery "stages"
They have to make up new names nobody else uses, and they have to re-name when they make changes....even if the changes don't make the pack better....and they always try to convince us that the newest version as better, even if it is the same or worse.
You're starting to garner the attention of the big brands. That's a huge deal! Means maybe we'll see some better marketing claims and more transparency to the consumer.
More likely the big brands will try to bribe them with free stuff and when that doesn't work they'll get bored and leave them alone. Do you think the lock picking lawyer has caused a massive change in the lock industry?
@@TheFool2cool obviously the average mass produced item isn’t going to change (other than finding another way to make it cheaper) no matter what anyone does since your average consumer is looking for a barely adequate product or one that appears as such as long as it’s cheap, especially locks. but yes i would say for sure he as well as TTC have made a significant impact to certain companies in their respective industries that care about performance and there is a sizable and deep pocketed group of people willing to research and find the best quality/value product available, and if you do the slightest bit of research on power tools or locks you are nothing short of guaranteed to come across both channels
Also the power tool industry has a MUCH larger group of savvy buyers than the lock industry so hard to compare the two, there’s hundreds of thousands of professional mechanics/technicians who rely on these every day and have a vested interest in them being up to snuff, versus locks being an average throwaway consumer product to the VAST majority of users and are usually nothing more than a visual deterrent rather than a real problem for thieves
@@TheFool2cool - LPL has not changed Master or Kwikset, but PacLock does pay attention. So it depends a bit on the manufacturer and what they value; some value lowest cost mass production, some value better performance.

Well amp hour doesn't mean more power alone. Discharge rate and voltage drop dictate that. But a full extra row of 18650s help with both of that. You could make a 9ah pack with terrible discharge rate cells and it would be worse than the 3ah with 21700s
@@TorqueTestChannel very true. Thank you for the clarification. It’s just an argument I see frequently on the ryobi fan FB pages usually about the 9ah batteries. Both sides utterly stuck in their mindsets about it.
So as per their email the hp contacts allow the tool to draw 80 amps vs 60 without. Considering the PBP004 has 5s2p EVE INR18650/20P cells rated for 30A each, that would limit the pack to 60A, rendering the HP contacts useless. Also the voltage drop on the EVE cells at 15A is within a 10th of a volt of the Samsung 30T cells in the P195 at 30A. Which is why the test was so close on the short tests. At 1/2 charge the EVE at down to 3.3V and the Samsung around 3.4v and that gap increases as the state of charge drops.
@@littlejackalo5326 The batteries regulate the current, so there isn't very high peak current. These batteries would over temp within the torque dyno test length if they didn't have current regulation. In my own testing even with current regulation the newer EVE cells will over temp on around 80 seconds, with my older Sony cell 18650 pack lasting over 2 minutes. The primary cause was a much quicker voltage drop in the EVE packs, causing the current to rise as the tool tries to keep the tool turning. This is with 2p 4ah HP packs. By comparison my custom 40t 1p 21700 packs will do a complete battery drain with out overheating the cells, with a 3.5 minute run time. My 9AH Sony cell packs will also do over 3.5 minutes, but the tool overheats after about 4 minutes. I am using a test jig that mounts a bike disk caliper on my 6 1/2 inch brushless circular saw blade. Then use a spring to depress the brake leaver with the same amount of pressure.
@@littlejackalo5326 Your point is well made but a ~2Ah battery isnt unacceptable for all tools - for example I use 2.5 Ah's quite a bit when I dont want to have the weight (they are hugely lighter than the 4Ah or bigger, the 9Ah is a monster) and they are perfectly fine for a lot of different tools depending on the use.
@@francistaylor1822 the sad thing is a 1p 40t pack would be the best pack they could make, but they dropped 21700 all together. A 2p 40t would overheat any tool they make before dieing.

I just ordered one of these impacts on a special at home depot. Buy the 4amp HP battery and charger and get the tool for free, not bad for $160 with free shipping. I'm glad to see the battery is a good match to the tool. I'm not a professional so it should do well for what I need, plus I have other Ryobi tools.
Still waiting on them to release a 1/4 anviled impact. Love using my 1/4 tools on smaller projects but hate having to use an adapter. I had a 1/4 impact through Matco years ago and loved it. No adapter required. Sockets went straight on the tool. Need ryobi to get on that.
I found this out when the 9ah first came out. The 5" brushed circ saw would never get through a 2x until I used that monster. The saw still sucked but it was OBVIOUSLY more powerful. It didn't have the HP contacts either - another myth busted - YEARS ago. EVERY tool with the 9 is better including the cheapest weed trimmer.
I have two of 9Ah batteries for my brushless lawn mower, and it's absolutely insane how much power it has with those, easily putting some of the petrol ones to shame (and it's fraction of the size and weight, and requires little to no maintenance...). Meanwhile I also got so many 5 Ah batteries around I basically don't know what the hell to do with those, since they kept giving them to me whenever I bought anything Ryobi last year or so...

I'm honestly quite pleased with the results of this. Proper battery with the pack with...not exactly identical, but functional numbers bundled with the battery? That's a positive change in the industry that's probably 100% related to your content and the content from others like you. I'll be honest. I'm the cheap bastard that buys the cheep tool once to see if it lasts, and honestly, while they lack in power, I've only ever had one ryobi tool actually _die_ on me. Which is better than I can say of many much more expensive brands I've put through the same exact workloads. Basically, until it dies, my work drill and driver combo for slapping together dead tree carcass is the cheapest tools ryobi would sell me...because they're about five years old now and still do the job.
I used to use the RYOBI impact gun back when the only other battery powered options were SnapOn and DeWalt. The gun was $100 new and you could get 2 batteries for $100. They were pretty good for the price, and I used the guns daily. They could even occasionally remove crank pulley bolts, but subframe and suspension bolts were out of the question. The only drawback was that the gun would only last about a year, but, it was so inexpensive that I was happy to just go pick up another one. Then Milwaukee came out with their impact line, I made the switch. That was 5yrs ago, the tool is still going strong and I rarely come across a bolt it won't bust loose. The batteries have even held up.
@@rch5991 nope, it’s the first gen Fuel brushless high torque. Still going strong, just busted loose some 22mm suspension bolts and wheel bearings last week. I picked up the original brushed gun in a Home Despot package deal last year and it doesn’t hold a candle to the power of the fuel.
The real challenge is finding the 9ah ryobi battery available anywhere. Picked one up with a charger as a package deal but have never seen HD have these single batteries in stock.
Ryobi is great for around the house and small DIY tasks. I have had a set for years and built many thing with them and all still works. Don't expect too much out of them and they will serve their purpose well.
Take that Turpal battery and jump it off from another good/charged battery for a mintue or so. Then toss it in a charger, it should start charging. It's most likely just dropped below the cuttoff voltage.
I bought and opened up one of the clone “9ah” batteries, they do put out the power, but use lower capacity, average output batteries in them, making the batter capacity actually around 4.5ah.
Yeah, there's a couple vids around showing this. Also, you're never 100% certain where the batteries are coming from and could potentially start a fire or burn up your tool. Best not to use them on your high end tools.
I've considered buying the cheap batteries and replacing the cells with high quality ones, would probably end up with equal or better than original batteries at a cheaper price (if the work isn't accounted)
@cujoedaman lmao what? Burn up your tools? I mean I guess if your blind maybe but anyone using a tool will see the signs of a cell overheating and remove it before the tool is on fire. Its also ryobi.. how expensive can the tool really get?
An interesting set of data would be measuring the amp draw throughout these tests. That could really help answer some of these battery questions. I realize that could be a lot of additional effort. Great stuff you do here, thanks.
Quite frankly, that would be nearly impossible to do and be fair across the different brands. The ammeter would have to be placed between the battery and the tool, and there will therefore be extra contact resistance, extra resistance in the connection from the contacts battery side to the ammeter, extra resistance in the connection from the ammeter to contacts to the tool interface - that extra resistance could drop the voltage a tad or could limit the current flow. But each tool brand being different means these extra resistances can vary too much from one to the next, making the test unfair.

I purchased the Ryobi 1/2 impact to work on my trucks. I tried the 4 ah battery and it wouldn’t loosen my lug nuts. They told me the same thing about the battery. I went to Home Depot and the “1” 9AH battery was about $40.00 cheaper then the 6ah battery so I bought the 9AH battery. The impact drill worked like a charm. The issue now is that not one single Home Depot sells the 9AH battery and a single 6ah battery cost about the same or more then the actual tool!
With no change in chemistry/type and, therefore, any associated gains in peak discharge rate, the larger capacity battery means that there are more cells in parallel. More cells in parallel means each cell is stressed to a lesser degree; generating less heat, voltage sagging less under load, etc. Overall, the cells are happier, the BMS is happier and the tool is happier; all culminating with higher tool performance.
This channel sells tools like few others. It's that simple. The info we get here, and the comparisons are great for making us more educated buyers. I'd be surprised if every tool manufacturer wasn't paying super close attention to these videos.
I've been using the older, brushed ryobi impact gun with gen 1 and gen 2 batteries and some 6ah knockoff brand packs. In 2 years...used every weekend...I've only come across 3 bolts the ryobi couldn't break free. A dang good tool for it's price. I thought about buying the new brushless version but since my old one always gets it done, there's no reason to until mine dies.
About 2 yrs ago, they had a sawzall w a 9ah battery kit for 159. The saw alone was 139 and battery was its current price when separate but they stopped that kit pretty fast
Honestly speaking I've been using Ryobi cordless tools for about 25 years now. I've had one battery go dead on me in all that time. I've never had any of the tools fail on me, just the one battery. I use Ryobi tools I bought 13 years ago and they're still going strong. I use them every day in my work. For performance and reliability I will always stick with Ryobi!

This whole thing sounds like a big sales trick to get honest UA-camrs, who they know won't take their stuff, to buy extra batteries. "Hey, you what you really need to do is get 50 ultra mega high performance batteries and place them in a circle for ten minutes before testing the tool (while chanting the Techtronic mantra). We'll send them at no charge. Oh, you have a policy of not taking free product? I honestly had no idea. I guess you'll have to buy them with your own money. Here's a link."
(And to be clear, I'm not saying that taking free product makes a channel dishonest. It takes both morals and resources to be able to run a test channel without getting free tools. Many UA-camrs could not afford to run channels without a hand-out hand tool.)

The engineers would know this, but can't tell anyone. It's the job of marketing and PR people to tell us, but they absolutely do not know anything about the tool that isn't written on the box.
I've been pretty happy with a few ryobi products, drills mostly. I am an aircraft mechanic, the subject comes up occasionally at work. I am not cheap on tools, but have no need for the highest torque drill to remove and install screws on inspection panels. Others have spent 3, 4, 5 times as much on drills for this. The result? They pull the trigger, the screws come out. Just like my cheap green one. Mostly wasted money. The clutches have worked well..I did change one chuck to a jacobs. The battery life seems comparable to more expensive brands, and I appreciate that they have been compatible for decades. I have nicads from the late '90's that fit in my newest drill. (Yes, they are long dead.) The max output on impact wrenches is a real factor, though. My older ryobi is weak, but they seem to be improving.
How about testing manufacturer batteries on the same tool. So get ryobi to dewalt and ryobi to M18 adapters and try the most similar sizes on that impact. M18 8ah oh vs ryobi 9ah vs dewalt 8ah?
I have had an aftermarket battery fail after a few seconds on a 1/2 impact. The cells were fitted too loosely in the plastic housing and the battery spot welds broke loose under the vibration. I got a replacement battery and filled the voids inside battery housing before using it, so that couldn't happen. I have been satisfied with it since. It brought an old tool back to life.
I’ve been thinking about getting some Ryobi tools for work, mostly for the hi-vis color scheme and the cut-off tool. Their behavior here is pushing me a lot closer to making the purchase.

@@chuckd9007 Dewalt doesnt have half the tools that ryobi does though. I mainly got into them for price obviously, but stayed because of the versatility of the battery. I only have 3 tools I use for work, a vacuum, a leaf blower and a flashlight. everything else is for projects around the house.
I bought that exact same knockoff battery for my ryobi and ended up returning it. Trigger response is delayed, far weaker than stock. Not sure why it has such good reviews on amazon. Waste of money.
Amazon sellers can buy reviews. One way is they can purchase their own product in someone else's name and send it to an unsuspecting person. Then they leave a positive review that looks totally legit to Amazon. (There are lots of stories of people receiving items from Amazon they didn't purchase....I got a brass hammer for free. I actually did order it, but my order disappeared from the system. I received the hammer, but there was no record of the purchase when I went to expense it for work.)
I normally only buy tools/batteries with 1000+ 4.5+ star reviews Sort by negative and read them, if it's just DOAs, defects or failure to arrive I'll consider buying them.
Awesome video! I'm a huge ryobi fan and have been wishing for a high torque impact for years and years. I did purchase a high torque Dewalt because I wasn't going to live without one, but I'll be picking this up to go with my many other ryobi tools. At the very least it'll give me an excuse to keep one in my work vehicle lol. With an impact wrench, Once you slap a 9ah(or bigger) battery in, you instantly feel and hear the tool come to life. It was great to see the massive gains reflected in the charts.
Great video, I was lucky enough to get a 9.0Ah for my birthday and found it is great in my line trimmer and the hedger that run for longer times. Here they have very strict marketing laws and they are sold as offering increased performance on selected brushless tools.
Just waiting for the Ryobi High Torque to be available in the states. Must in the containers in those anchored ships of the west coast of the USA. I have already have a new 2ah, 4ah, the older 6ah, and 9ah Ryobi Brushless Battery Packs. I wonder what the 9ah would do on the P262....
That much of a torque difference between the 9AH and the others would have to mean the wrench is handling a HUGE wattage (I'd think current, but I suppose it could be voltage depending on electronics) increase considering the difference in the torque is at the MFing, SOAB, hold my meth part of the curve. Maybe even 150%? If that's the case, the motor, anvil and electronics had better be way over-engineered to live a life that's anything close to the comfy life it would enjoy with the 4AH battery.

Got 2 9ah for 199.00 earlier this year in prep of buying the p262. The high torque came out an I'm happy that I got those 9ah batteries. I checked now HD is selling a 4 pack now...
I bought 2 pack the knockoff TURPOW 9AMH batteries been using for 2 yrs now very powerful and happy with the lower price. Unfortunate yrs was defective but try getting a exchange it shld b worth the price
Ryobi is the best tool for me. One battery for all tool is a great idea. Their tools are getting better and better! I've had the blue line for almost 20 years and they work great with the lithium batts.
I would have taken them up on their free battery offer, and then tested the ones they sent against the ones you bought down at Lowe’s or Home Depot just to see if for nothing else if they sent you some shill batteries 🤔 would’ve been intriguing to know.
That is a great idea to use with all brands, to find out which ones are doing the BS stuff - after all, free means he isn’t paying extra. It just means an extra set of tests to run. But the disclosure that would bring …
I use cryobi primarily around the house because they are affordable, and reliable... plus unlike snap off I don't need to locate a truck to warranty a part since I can just go to my local homeless despot to get a new tool /if/ something broke. Thus far I've had a gen1 weed smacker physically wear out from age/use but I haven't had anything fail on me(not counting bits). That said it's nice they are including larger batteries in the kits since it makes me want to grab a few things next sale. Like the new 90* driver.
About 2 years ago I bought the 5Ah pack to replace my existing 4Ah packs, it's been amazing on all my Ryobi Garden & work tools. In the UK we can't get the 9Ah packs.
He’s likely communicating with marketing in those emails, and the level of technical skill in marketing is hit or miss. Some tech types do go into marketing (those are more likely to give a hit), but the non-tech types are more prolific in marketing (more likely to miss).
It would be interesting to see if you can put together a battery test stand that will stress the batteries and measure actual volts/wattage/amps outside of a tool
Project farm did some testing on tools with varying battery sizes, and broadly found 4Ah batteries to be around the ideal for most tools that aren't massive, but got greater output from even larger batteries still. The problem, however, is that these tools/batteries are clearly not designed correctly if you see increasing performance for increasing battery *capacity*. After all, the voltage is supposed to be the same.

My understanding is the HP 6 ah and above is what you need to get the maximum output on HP units. So the 9 ah doesn't give you more power than 6 ah only longer runtimes.
I bought two of the Amazon prime 6 amp hour Ryobi batteries, and honestly they're pretty fantastic. I have noticed when swapping from my three and power a difference but in comparison to the 4 amp hour old HP there doesn't seem to be much of a difference at all. Please test those. No problems charging mine or discharging them.
I had a first gen Ryobi drill go up in smoke while using a hole saw. The hardware store thankfully replaced it with the latest generation drill only to have it start smoking while using the same hole saw. I have an like their impact driver though. But haven't needed to use it for anything heavy duty.
Late to this video but I do appreciate such natation as "battery of tests" and "amp things up." I'm browsing fourth of July sales and there's a Ryobi bundle I'm eyeing at Home Depot.

Fear is you can make a cheap battery dyno really well, just up the volts. Cost savings are from using parts that have no life and dropping the safety hardware. A test that gets great results from cr@p is not helpful. Glad battery was DOA.
I bought a bunch of ryobi tools… the nicest thing I can say about them; I can leave them outside and NOBODY wants to steal them! Can’t say that about Makita or DeWalt - that’s for sure.
Very good test but.....that 9ah baterry looks like a boat anchor so NO I would not go for that battery just to get some more power gain while knowing that I could not fit that gun with that boat anchor in tight places. By the way you should mention the seller of the dead battery just so we can shame them into NOT selling crap to the hard working folks watching your videos.
Just picked up one of these high torques. Yes, I like the Milwaukee and Dewalt products BUT there price point was killing me. I work at home and on the road as a traveling mechanic. I picked up one of the brushed 100 dollar 1/2 impacts Ryobi offers and it actually is really good for what it does. Not too much torque but not overpowering. I have noticed here in Lake Havasu when the temps get 110+ the tools and batteries don't like it. If you beat on a 8 lug truck lug nut to do a tire change it will shut the brushed impact down. Battery will still be 3-4 bars. Lugs are usually torqued 110 ft. lbs. I'm hoping to step up my game with the HP since I already have a bunch of Ryobi stuff/batteries. Mind you I've got all the other big tool brands like Snap On, Mac, Matco, Sunex, Craftsman, AirCat but I put the Ryobi tools to work all the time and I'm very impressed. Great channel by the way. Always love your content and the honest testing.
I had been using the one ryobi says is 300 foot pounds for about 3 years. For home use, working on go karts, taking off car tires, fixing riding mowers, I rarely ever ran into a nut or bolt it couldn't break free. But I recently had an old snapper zero turn, the blade bolts go through the spindles and have a nut on the top of the pulley where water/grass/dirt collect. No amount of pb blaster, heat or even 3' breaker bar got me anywhere. So I dropped the $200 for the new 1170 foot pound rated one (tool only) and it zipped that nut off in just a couple of seconds.
I've noticed across most brands I've seen tested a 4aH never seems to outpower a 2 or 3 aH battery. Also, with Makita specifically the 4,5 and 6 aH battery all weight the same but the way their wired makes the difference between them
Home Depot has sales all the time on Ryobi batteries. I got two 4 ah batteries for $99.99 a few months ago. And the deal even included a choice of tools to use with them, for "free". I chose the 5-1/4" circular saw.
I have 2 4AH batteries that are like 8 years old and they work great still, I have now purchased 2 of the 9ah batteries and absolutely love those, just purchased the mid torque wrench, can’t wait to use it…
From my experience, the weakness of the Ryobi battery tools is the charger, it chokes if the battery voltage drops below a certain level, which is exactly what happens when you run the battery until 'dead'. It has happened to me multiple times. Their charger needs to be smarter.
No it doesn't. I have never had a a tool drain a pack beloved the voltage cut off point of a charger. If it did happen than the voltage drop would rise back up after a few minutes.
Ryobi days is currently happening and The starter kit comes with a PB007 (one+ 6ah battery) P004 (one+ 4ah) battery and a p003 (one+ 2ah) battery + bag charger and a free tool which I chose the p262 cuz that’s what I need but all in all an impact with that much tq and that many batteries + charger for 200$ best budget current cuz of the promotion BY FAR.
That's great. Just attach a car battery to get what others are close enough with smaller batterys. Once the battery is so big the tool can't get in the working space it makes the tool worthless and adding extensions and universals negates the extra power of the bigger battery. Some times we just have to strong arm somethings loose before we can spin them out.
TLDR; hello, I'm new these are my thoughts Ryobi is a basic brand, if you're after a basic experience your expectations will be met. If you're wanting a premium experience you will play a losing game against the house which is TTI when you pick Ryobi, you can do it but you should have just started with Milwaukee with the price you'll pay. Alrighty, so I've snooped your channels videos once or twice before tonight, but I've never binged on your content prior to tonight, so thank you very much. I'm trying to make sure to thumb up your videos and you earned a subscription but no notification bell because no one gets to send me notifications... No one. Excellent video, well done, I love your stats first approach to your videos and your commentary makes it all the more enjoyable. Now that the niceties are taken care of, my actual comment goes like this : I was really hoping that you were gonna call the Ryobi basic batteries "basic B***h" batteries quite honestly, however UA-cam's algorithm doesn't like that kind of adult flavoring generally and your channel doesn't roll that way. In my personal experience, I won't intentionally buy gen 1 Ryobi batteries, except when the Ryobi 3/8 in ratchet was $10 more with the 1.5ah gen 1 and a basic charger than the ala carte tool. But outside of that rather extreme situation I just use my xc 5.0 M18 batteries with a lovely little Badaptor adapter. Because at the end of the day, I'm invested in M18 but I didn't drink the Kool-aid, so my work van is spiced with 3 Ryobi tools where there was value in my opinion to buy the Ryobi and not the Milwaukee that was 3 times the price. All of that to say, I'm very familiar with the difference in beans between the different sizes of batteries but for what I do the basic xc 5.0 batteries that were in my kits are perfectly sufficient for my needs and I couldn't justify shelling out the dough to buy separate 21700 based batteries (except for my vape, I switched to Samsung 21700 cells about 2.5 years ago, lol).
Ah("capacity"[Wh is more proper way of specifying capacity]) of the battery doesn't _directly_ result in higher torque on the tool. But more Ah usually means more cells in parallel - less internal resistance - less voltage drop - more voltage udner load - more current - more torque. That 9Ah kicks ass yes, but I can make 1Ah battery that will make it go to 1000LBS then lit the tool on fire from the overload...

Maybe it will be able to recharge faster without having the drawback of decreasing life at an accelerated rate. I recall reading a while ago about lithium ion batteries being able to put out more power and store more after they have 5 or 10% of their rated life in recharges. I wonder if that is what we are seeing out of the beloved 3AH battery. Maybe the 4AH needs some time to stretch its legs.

Un necessarily confusing, and while backwards compatibility is great, everyone thinks they have the best battery because they're all marketed as best, and when a new one comes out how do they put it above what they just called best? By making the name mumbo jumbo...

but yes i would say for sure he as well as TTC have made a significant impact to certain companies in their respective industries that care about performance and there is a sizable and deep pocketed group of people willing to research and find the best quality/value product available, and if you do the slightest bit of research on power tools or locks you are nothing short of guaranteed to come across both channels
Also the power tool industry has a MUCH larger group of savvy buyers than the lock industry so hard to compare the two, there’s hundreds of thousands of professional mechanics/technicians who rely on these every day and have a vested interest in them being up to snuff, versus locks being an average throwaway consumer product to the VAST majority of users and are usually nothing more than a visual deterrent rather than a real problem for thieves

Well amp hour doesn't mean more power alone. Discharge rate and voltage drop dictate that. But a full extra row of 18650s help with both of that. You could make a 9ah pack with terrible discharge rate cells and it would be worse than the 3ah with 21700s
@@TorqueTestChannel very true. Thank you for the clarification. It’s just an argument I see frequently on the ryobi fan FB pages usually about the 9ah batteries. Both sides utterly stuck in their mindsets about it.
So as per their email the hp contacts allow the tool to draw 80 amps vs 60 without. Considering the PBP004 has 5s2p EVE INR18650/20P cells rated for 30A each, that would limit the pack to 60A, rendering the HP contacts useless.
Also the voltage drop on the EVE cells at 15A is within a 10th of a volt of the Samsung 30T cells in the P195 at 30A. Which is why the test was so close on the short tests.
At 1/2 charge the EVE at down to 3.3V and the Samsung around 3.4v and that gap increases as the state of charge drops.

The batteries regulate the current, so there isn't very high peak current. These batteries would over temp within the torque dyno test length if they didn't have current regulation. In my own testing even with current regulation the newer EVE cells will over temp on around 80 seconds, with my older Sony cell 18650 pack lasting over 2 minutes. The primary cause was a much quicker voltage drop in the EVE packs, causing the current to rise as the tool tries to keep the tool turning. This is with 2p 4ah HP packs.
By comparison my custom 40t 1p 21700 packs will do a complete battery drain with out overheating the cells, with a 3.5 minute run time. My 9AH Sony cell packs will also do over 3.5 minutes, but the tool overheats after about 4 minutes.
I am using a test jig that mounts a bike disk caliper on my 6 1/2 inch brushless circular saw blade. Then use a spring to depress the brake leaver with the same amount of pressure.
@@littlejackalo5326 Your point is well made but a ~2Ah battery isnt unacceptable for all tools - for example I use 2.5 Ah's quite a bit when I dont want to have the weight (they are hugely lighter than the 4Ah or bigger, the 9Ah is a monster) and they are perfectly fine for a lot of different tools depending on the use.
@@francistaylor1822 the sad thing is a 1p 40t pack would be the best pack they could make, but they dropped 21700 all together. A 2p 40t would overheat any tool they make before dieing.

Looks like I mght be buying a Ryobi for my next impact gun for my trailer service division. The fact they actually are looking for feedback is a HUGE plus in my book. Plus, their battery powered grease gun kicks butt.

I just ordered one of these impacts on a special at home depot. Buy the 4amp HP battery and charger and get the tool for free, not bad for $160 with free shipping. I'm glad to see the battery is a good match to the tool. I'm not a professional so it should do well for what I need, plus I have other Ryobi tools.
Still waiting on them to release a 1/4 anviled impact. Love using my 1/4 tools on smaller projects but hate having to use an adapter. I had a 1/4 impact through Matco years ago and loved it. No adapter required. Sockets went straight on the tool. Need ryobi to get on that.
I found this out when the 9ah first came out. The 5" brushed circ saw would never get through a 2x until I used that monster. The saw still sucked but it was OBVIOUSLY more powerful. It didn't have the HP contacts either - another myth busted - YEARS ago. EVERY tool with the 9 is better including the cheapest weed trimmer.
The 9 ah has 3 cells in parallel vs 2 on the 4ah so it has a potential of 33% more amps right out of the gate. That also means less voltage sag too.

Having one is awesome, I really like not having to worry about having enough battery life when I’m not around somewhere to charge.
I have two of 9Ah batteries for my brushless lawn mower, and it's absolutely insane how much power it has with those, easily putting some of the petrol ones to shame (and it's fraction of the size and weight, and requires little to no maintenance...). Meanwhile I also got so many 5 Ah batteries around I basically don't know what the hell to do with those, since they kept giving them to me whenever I bought anything Ryobi last year or so...

I'm honestly quite pleased with the results of this. Proper battery with the pack with...not exactly identical, but functional numbers bundled with the battery? That's a positive change in the industry that's probably 100% related to your content and the content from others like you.
I'll be honest. I'm the cheap bastard that buys the cheep tool once to see if it lasts, and honestly, while they lack in power, I've only ever had one ryobi tool actually _die_ on me. Which is better than I can say of many much more expensive brands I've put through the same exact workloads.
Basically, until it dies, my work drill and driver combo for slapping together dead tree carcass is the cheapest tools ryobi would sell me...because they're about five years old now and still do the job.
I used to use the RYOBI impact gun back when the only other battery powered options were SnapOn and DeWalt. The gun was $100 new and you could get 2 batteries for $100. They were pretty good for the price, and I used the guns daily. They could even occasionally remove crank pulley bolts, but subframe and suspension bolts were out of the question. The only drawback was that the gun would only last about a year, but, it was so inexpensive that I was happy to just go pick up another one. Then Milwaukee came out with their impact line, I made the switch. That was 5yrs ago, the tool is still going strong and I rarely come across a bolt it won't bust loose. The batteries have even held up.
@@rch5991 nope, it’s the first gen Fuel brushless high torque. Still going strong, just busted loose some 22mm suspension bolts and wheel bearings last week. I picked up the original brushed gun in a Home Despot package deal last year and it doesn’t hold a candle to the power of the fuel.
The real challenge is finding the 9ah ryobi battery available anywhere. Picked one up with a charger as a package deal but have never seen HD have these single batteries in stock.
I'm glad I got 2 9h on sale for $75 each.. what a stupid good deal I couldn't pass up even though I didn't need them.

I work at Toyota and I’ve had this ryobi for about 18 months and dropped it many times and 100s of tire rotations and still no issues!! 💪🏼

Ryobi is great for around the house and small DIY tasks. I have had a set for years and built many thing with them and all still works. Don't expect too much out of them and they will serve their purpose well.
Take that Turpal battery and jump it off from another good/charged battery for a mintue or so. Then toss it in a charger, it should start charging. It's most likely just dropped below the cuttoff voltage.
The battery level lights should still work, it should flash if under voltage.
I bought and opened up one of the clone “9ah” batteries, they do put out the power, but use lower capacity, average output batteries in them, making the batter capacity actually around 4.5ah.
Yeah, there's a couple vids around showing this. Also, you're never 100% certain where the batteries are coming from and could potentially start a fire or burn up your tool. Best not to use them on your high end tools.
I've considered buying the cheap batteries and replacing the cells with high quality ones, would probably end up with equal or better than original batteries at a cheaper price (if the work isn't accounted)
So they use old ass 1.5ah cells that have been out for 15 years. They put out as much power as the 3ah cells but obviously not the capacity.

An interesting set of data would be measuring the amp draw throughout these tests. That could really help answer some of these battery questions. I realize that could be a lot of additional effort. Great stuff you do here, thanks.
Quite frankly, that would be nearly impossible to do and be fair across the different brands. The ammeter would have to be placed between the battery and the tool, and there will therefore be extra contact resistance, extra resistance in the connection from the contacts battery side to the ammeter, extra resistance in the connection from the ammeter to contacts to the tool interface - that extra resistance could drop the voltage a tad or could limit the current flow. But each tool brand being different means these extra resistances can vary too much from one to the next, making the test unfair.
Easy to do but you'll need to modify the tool to add a current clamp to a power wire within the tool. Potentially reversible if done right.
@Steve Babiak it wouldn't be impossible at all.. you just need access to the hot wire on the battery or tool to measure it.

I purchased the Ryobi 1/2 impact to work on my trucks. I tried the 4 ah battery and it wouldn’t loosen my lug nuts. They told me the same thing about the battery. I went to Home Depot and the “1” 9AH battery was about $40.00 cheaper then the 6ah battery so I bought the 9AH battery. The impact drill worked like a charm. The issue now is that not one single Home Depot sells the 9AH battery and a single 6ah battery cost about the same or more then the actual tool!

With no change in chemistry/type and, therefore, any associated gains in peak discharge rate, the larger capacity battery means that there are more cells in parallel. More cells in parallel means each cell is stressed to a lesser degree; generating less heat, voltage sagging less under load, etc. Overall, the cells are happier, the BMS is happier and the tool is happier; all culminating with higher tool performance.
This channel sells tools like few others. It's that simple. The info we get here, and the comparisons are great for making us more educated buyers. I'd be surprised if every tool manufacturer wasn't paying super close attention to these videos.
I've been using the older, brushed ryobi impact gun with gen 1 and gen 2 batteries and some 6ah knockoff brand packs. In 2 years...used every weekend...I've only come across 3 bolts the ryobi couldn't break free. A dang good tool for it's price. I thought about buying the new brushless version but since my old one always gets it done, there's no reason to until mine dies.
You could buy the new one and have the old one as a back up incase it breaks. That way you won't have to stop the job and go to the store.
About 2 yrs ago, they had a sawzall w a 9ah battery kit for 159. The saw alone was 139 and battery was its current price when separate but they stopped that kit pretty fast

Honestly speaking I've been using Ryobi cordless tools for about 25 years now. I've had one battery go dead on me in all that time. I've never had any of the tools fail on me, just the one battery. I use Ryobi tools I bought 13 years ago and they're still going strong. I use them every day in my work. For performance and reliability I will always stick with Ryobi!

We'll send them at no charge. Oh, you have a policy of not taking free product? I honestly had no idea. I guess you'll have to buy them with your own money. Here's a link."

The engineers would know this, but can't tell anyone. It's the job of marketing and PR people to tell us, but they absolutely do not know anything about the tool that isn't written on the box.

I've been pretty happy with a few ryobi products, drills mostly. I am an aircraft mechanic, the subject comes up occasionally at work. I am not cheap on tools, but have no need for the highest torque drill to remove and install screws on inspection panels. Others have spent 3, 4, 5 times as much on drills for this. The result? They pull the trigger, the screws come out. Just like my cheap green one. Mostly wasted money. The clutches have worked well..I did change one chuck to a jacobs. The battery life seems comparable to more expensive brands, and I appreciate that they have been compatible for decades. I have nicads from the late '90's that fit in my newest drill. (Yes, they are long dead.)
The max output on impact wrenches is a real factor, though. My older ryobi is weak, but they seem to be improving.
I love that P195. It sucks that this stopped selling it and haven't released a 21700 cell followup as of yet.
I bought 2 9 ah batteries a few years back for about $60 each they are the right battery try them on the old school Impact wrenches too
How about testing manufacturer batteries on the same tool. So get ryobi to dewalt and ryobi to M18 adapters and try the most similar sizes on that impact. M18 8ah oh vs ryobi 9ah vs dewalt 8ah?

I have had an aftermarket battery fail after a few seconds on a 1/2 impact. The cells were fitted too loosely in the plastic housing and the battery spot welds broke loose under the vibration. I got a replacement battery and filled the voids inside battery housing before using it, so that couldn't happen. I have been satisfied with it since. It brought an old tool back to life.
I’ve been thinking about getting some Ryobi tools for work, mostly for the hi-vis color scheme and the cut-off tool. Their behavior here is pushing me a lot closer to making the purchase.
I have like 20 ryobi tools, most of them are pretty decent. brushless is obviously best.

@@chuckd9007 I have Dewalt at home, where I’m less concerned about people walking away with them and I also have easy, immediate access to compressed air. My air die grinder and 3” cut-off tools are essentially useless at work, so… Ryobi.
@@chuckd9007 Dewalt doesnt have half the tools that ryobi does though. I mainly got into them for price obviously, but stayed because of the versatility of the battery.
I only have 3 tools I use for work, a vacuum, a leaf blower and a flashlight. everything else is for projects around the house.
I bought that exact same knockoff battery for my ryobi and ended up returning it. Trigger response is delayed, far weaker than stock. Not sure why it has such good reviews on amazon. Waste of money.

Amazon sellers can buy reviews. One way is they can purchase their own product in someone else's name and send it to an unsuspecting person. Then they leave a positive review that looks totally legit to Amazon. (There are lots of stories of people receiving items from Amazon they didn't purchase....I got a brass hammer for free. I actually did order it, but my order disappeared from the system. I received the hammer, but there was no record of the purchase when I went to expense it for work.)

Sort by negative and read them, if it's just DOAs, defects or failure to arrive I'll consider buying them.

Awesome video! I'm a huge ryobi fan and have been wishing for a high torque impact for years and years. I did purchase a high torque Dewalt because I wasn't going to live without one, but I'll be picking this up to go with my many other ryobi tools. At the very least it'll give me an excuse to keep one in my work vehicle lol. With an impact wrench, Once you slap a 9ah(or bigger) battery in, you instantly feel and hear the tool come to life. It was great to see the massive gains reflected in the charts.

Great video, I was lucky enough to get a 9.0Ah for my birthday and found it is great in my line trimmer and the hedger that run for longer times. Here they have very strict marketing laws and they are sold as offering increased performance on selected brushless tools.
Just waiting for the Ryobi High Torque to be available in the states. Must in the containers in those anchored ships of the west coast of the USA. I have already have a new 2ah, 4ah, the older 6ah, and 9ah Ryobi Brushless Battery Packs. I wonder what the 9ah would do on the P262....
That much of a torque difference between the 9AH and the others would have to mean the wrench is handling a HUGE wattage (I'd think current, but I suppose it could be voltage depending on electronics) increase considering the difference in the torque is at the MFing, SOAB, hold my meth part of the curve. Maybe even 150%? If that's the case, the motor, anvil and electronics had better be way over-engineered to live a life that's anything close to the comfy life it would enjoy with the 4AH battery.

Got 2 9ah for 199.00 earlier this year in prep of buying the p262. The high torque came out an I'm happy that I got those 9ah batteries. I checked now HD is selling a 4 pack now...
I have a bunch of Ryobi 18V ONE+ HP tools and I've discovered that they all performed their best with 6AH or 9AH batteries.
I bought 2 pack the knockoff TURPOW 9AMH batteries been using for 2 yrs now very powerful and happy with the lower price. Unfortunate yrs was defective but try getting a exchange it shld b worth the price
Ryobi is the best tool for me. One battery for all tool is a great idea. Their tools are getting better and better! I've had the blue line for almost 20 years and they work great with the lithium batts.
I would have taken them up on their free battery offer, and then tested the ones they sent against the ones you bought down at Lowe’s or Home Depot just to see if for nothing else if they sent you some shill batteries 🤔 would’ve been intriguing to know.

I use cryobi primarily around the house because they are affordable, and reliable... plus unlike snap off I don't need to locate a truck to warranty a part since I can just go to my local homeless despot to get a new tool /if/ something broke. Thus far I've had a gen1 weed smacker physically wear out from age/use but I haven't had anything fail on me(not counting bits).
That said it's nice they are including larger batteries in the kits since it makes me want to grab a few things next sale. Like the new 90* driver.
About 2 years ago I bought the 5Ah pack to replace my existing 4Ah packs, it's been amazing on all my Ryobi Garden & work tools. In the UK we can't get the 9Ah packs.
They were wrong in their email but still got their score up thanks to the new vid and 9ah battery. Good work Ryobi! 😂
He’s likely communicating with marketing in those emails, and the level of technical skill in marketing is hit or miss. Some tech types do go into marketing (those are more likely to give a hit), but the non-tech types are more prolific in marketing (more likely to miss).

It would be interesting to see if you can put together a battery test stand that will stress the batteries and measure actual volts/wattage/amps outside of a tool
Project farm did some testing on tools with varying battery sizes, and broadly found 4Ah batteries to be around the ideal for most tools that aren't massive, but got greater output from even larger batteries still. The problem, however, is that these tools/batteries are clearly not designed correctly if you see increasing performance for increasing battery *capacity*. After all, the voltage is supposed to be the same.

My understanding is the HP 6 ah and above is what you need to get the maximum output on HP units. So the 9 ah doesn't give you more power than 6 ah only longer runtimes.

I bought two of the Amazon prime 6 amp hour Ryobi batteries, and honestly they're pretty fantastic. I have noticed when swapping from my three and power a difference but in comparison to the 4 amp hour old HP there doesn't seem to be much of a difference at all. Please test those. No problems charging mine or discharging them.
I had a first gen Ryobi drill go up in smoke while using a hole saw. The hardware store thankfully replaced it with the latest generation drill only to have it start smoking while using the same hole saw. I have an like their impact driver though. But haven't needed to use it for anything heavy duty.

Fear is you can make a cheap battery dyno really well, just up the volts. Cost savings are from using parts that have no life and dropping the safety hardware. A test that gets great results from cr@p is not helpful. Glad battery was DOA.
I bought a bunch of ryobi tools… the nicest thing I can say about them; I can leave them outside and NOBODY wants to steal them! Can’t say that about Makita or DeWalt - that’s for sure.

Very good test but.....that 9ah baterry looks like a boat anchor so NO I would not go for that battery just to get some more power gain while knowing that I could not fit that gun with that boat anchor in tight places. By the way you should mention the seller of the dead battery just so we can shame them into NOT selling crap to the hard working folks watching your videos.
Just picked up one of these high torques. Yes, I like the Milwaukee and Dewalt products BUT there price point was killing me. I work at home and on the road as a traveling mechanic. I picked up one of the brushed 100 dollar 1/2 impacts Ryobi offers and it actually is really good for what it does. Not too much torque but not overpowering. I have noticed here in Lake Havasu when the temps get 110+ the tools and batteries don't like it. If you beat on a 8 lug truck lug nut to do a tire change it will shut the brushed impact down. Battery will still be 3-4 bars. Lugs are usually torqued 110 ft. lbs. I'm hoping to step up my game with the HP since I already have a bunch of Ryobi stuff/batteries. Mind you I've got all the other big tool brands like Snap On, Mac, Matco, Sunex, Craftsman, AirCat but I put the Ryobi tools to work all the time and I'm very impressed. Great channel by the way. Always love your content and the honest testing.
I had been using the one ryobi says is 300 foot pounds for about 3 years. For home use, working on go karts, taking off car tires, fixing riding mowers, I rarely ever ran into a nut or bolt it couldn't break free. But I recently had an old snapper zero turn, the blade bolts go through the spindles and have a nut on the top of the pulley where water/grass/dirt collect. No amount of pb blaster, heat or even 3' breaker bar got me anywhere. So I dropped the $200 for the new 1170 foot pound rated one (tool only) and it zipped that nut off in just a couple of seconds.

I've noticed across most brands I've seen tested a 4aH never seems to outpower a 2 or 3 aH battery. Also, with Makita specifically the 4,5 and 6 aH battery all weight the same but the way their wired makes the difference between them

Home Depot has sales all the time on Ryobi batteries. I got two 4 ah batteries for $99.99 a few months ago. And the deal even included a choice of tools to use with them, for "free". I chose the 5-1/4" circular saw.

From my experience, the weakness of the Ryobi battery tools is the charger, it chokes if the battery voltage drops below a certain level, which is exactly what happens when you run the battery until 'dead'. It has happened to me multiple times. Their charger needs to be smarter.
Every battery charger will do that, regardless of brand.
No it doesn't. I have never had a a tool drain a pack beloved the voltage cut off point of a charger. If it did happen than the voltage drop would rise back up after a few minutes.
Ryobi days is currently happening and The starter kit comes with a PB007 (one+ 6ah battery) P004 (one+ 4ah) battery and a p003 (one+ 2ah) battery + bag charger and a free tool which I chose the p262 cuz that’s what I need but all in all an impact with that much tq and that many batteries + charger for 200$ best budget current cuz of the promotion BY FAR.
So the 12AH battery is out now... can we see the 12 vs 9?
That's great. Just attach a car battery to get what others are close enough with smaller batterys. Once the battery is so big the tool can't get in the working space it makes the tool worthless and adding extensions and universals negates the extra power of the bigger battery. Some times we just have to strong arm somethings loose before we can spin them out.
TLDR; hello, I'm new these are my thoughts Ryobi is a basic brand, if you're after a basic experience your expectations will be met. If you're wanting a premium experience you will play a losing game against the house which is TTI when you pick Ryobi, you can do it but you should have just started with Milwaukee with the price you'll pay.

Now that the niceties are taken care of, my actual comment goes like this : I was really hoping that you were gonna call the Ryobi basic batteries "basic B***h" batteries quite honestly, however UA-cam's algorithm doesn't like that kind of adult flavoring generally and your channel doesn't roll that way.
In my personal experience, I won't intentionally buy gen 1 Ryobi batteries, except when the Ryobi 3/8 in ratchet was $10 more with the 1.5ah gen 1 and a basic charger than the ala carte tool.
But outside of that rather extreme situation I just use my xc 5.0 M18 batteries with a lovely little Badaptor adapter.
Because at the end of the day, I'm invested in M18 but I didn't drink the Kool-aid, so my work van is spiced with 3 Ryobi tools where there was value in my opinion to buy the Ryobi and not the Milwaukee that was 3 times the price.
All of that to say, I'm very familiar with the difference in beans between the different sizes of batteries but for what I do the basic xc 5.0 batteries that were in my kits are perfectly sufficient for my needs and I couldn't justify shelling out the dough to buy separate 21700 based batteries (except for my vape, I switched to Samsung 21700 cells about 2.5 years ago, lol).
How about test this impact with an adapter and a Milwaukee 12ah battery

Ah("capacity"[Wh is more proper way of specifying capacity]) of the battery doesn't _directly_ result in higher torque on the tool.
But more Ah usually means more cells in parallel - less internal resistance - less voltage drop - more voltage udner load - more current - more torque.
That 9Ah kicks ass yes, but I can make 1Ah battery that will make it go to 1000LBS then lit the tool on fire from the overload...
I got 2 of their 9ah batteries on sale for $150. Super good deal for 18ah total.
I have had great luck with GENERIC BATTS for my RYOBI gear. It actually outlasts the OEM BATTS.
