Microphone Test - Samson Meteor VS Yeti Blue

  • I test the four mics I have lying around on my desk right now to see which would win in a fight and stuff. I recently purchased the Blue Yeti in my quest for the perfect setup. Although I can't appreciate the improvement, at least I now have a backup, decent microphone and another portable but still decent one.

The Samson Meteor seems to favor Bass while the Go has more treble. The Yeti sounds quite balanced. The Meteor is not bad by any stretch of the imagination, but the Yeti is noticeably better and cleaner.

The blue and meteor have the same 16bit quality. The difference is the ability to change modes (sterio, cardinal, omnidirectional, etc.) and there is gain control on the yeti.

I can hear the difference between the blue yeti and the samson meteor. It's rather slight. I think the meteor is picking up more bass whilst the yeti sounds like it is picking up a more natural tone of your voice when compared to the Go which also sounds pretty decent.
I've been looking for a good microphone and I need one that will pick up my voice from a distance so it seems like I'm still going to have to go with the Yeti as you said that you have to be a bit closer with the meteor for it to pick up sound.

Came across this video as I am researching microphones. Yes, the do sound close but the Yeti Blue records clearly regardless of how it's turned. Meaning, if the front is facing away from you it still picks up your voice. The Samson is not built that way. It only picks up your voice clearly when you speak facing the front of the mic. I suppose if I''m going save a few dollars I'll just be sure the Samson is in the position it needs to be in before I start talking/recording. On the other hand if I don't want to have to worry about that then I guess I would spend the extra money. Seems simple enough. LOL

I have a Samson Meteor, and I use it for recording my voice on Minecraft videos (since the game console mic doesn't come through to the capture card). I've found that it's extremely sensitive and picks up every tiny little bit of background noise, as well as the room echo. If you have a very quiet environment and are speaking directly into it, then the quality is pretty good - but for me, the background noise it picks up gets annoying...

The Go product with bass increase sounds fine, but somewhat artificial compared to the other two. Not sure why everyone doesn't look this up but you can get a xlr to usb adapter for around $13 on Amazon

***** Well, if you want to spend the money for a card that supports XLR, then feel free. However if you just want to get around dealing with the XLR cable, then you can just get the adapter cable. Also, it's only $10, I actually bothered to look.

I am using the meteor since forever really, never even thought of switching. And I still don't. Never understood peoples obsession with the yeti for one person youtube commentary. It seems like a waste of money for that. But I guess it is probably great for group recordings! even though I feel like everyone having a microphone on his own would be better for post editing and audio balance... but that is just me babbling here!

5 years late but the blue yeti is better at picking up mid ranges, which for youtube videos would be meaningless but in music production means a lot

The Yeti had more "air noise". Like the P in "that's certainly a problem" at 1:33; the "was to" in "if I was too hasty" at 1:51 and the shortly after "even for" and "wasn't" - I could keep typing but you get the point. The Samson Meteor didn't have those muffled air noises. My question is: is that a bad aspect of the microphone or is it rather the uploader of this video doesn't know how to use it properly? What was he doing wrong if so?

The metor one is more squeakier and lowder and the yeti is soft and smooth

This is the review I was looking for. Just curious, how far away were you from the Samson mic?

The beat distance you should be from your mic is about 9 inches.
