  • Today I review one of the cheapest mics I've covered that sounds fantastic. This thing is small, portable, affordable, and feature rich. It may be out dated and have a number of flaws, but if you're able to get this at a good price, and you don't have the budget or desire to go above this, I think you'll be fine.

    The Samson GO Mic was my very first microphone. I now work in radio and voiceover professionally. Hell of a start.

    I had an urgent radio commercial voiceover job yesterday while away from my studio on holiday. I had no option but to use my Go Mic which I keep in the pocket of my iPad cover and recorded under a duvet.. The producer emailed back and said ‘that’s great, thanks.’ I can confirm the Go Mic is hugely sensitive to knocks, duvet rustle and cable touching and I had to use a sock to protect against plosives, but it did the job and as a professional voiceover that’s good enough for me.

    I really appreciate you reviewing/reminding us of some affordable mics. Sometimes you need to use a mic that you don't mind if it is destroyed. Or you are starting a project where budget is all important. Also, I love the comparison with the ultimate mic as well. 1) gives you a great reason to own it 2) gives me a great reason why I don't need to

      Learning how to 'hear' in the technical aspect, is a skill developed over time. For example, when I first started listening to music, I only got a general sense of the overall melody... it takes practice to learn to pick out every instrument individually, etc.

      @@hxhdfjifzirstc894 While what you say is absolutely true, and I agree 100%, I think the OP is referring to people's mic quality using headsets. It now lives in my work bag and gets brought out as a videoconference microphone so often, ESPECIALLY for its omni mode. Can just put it down in the middle of a table and the people at home can follow the people at the office without any issues.

    recently found this beast in the very back shelf of my closet, thought I had lost it when moving. I remember being extremely excited when it finally arrived - it was an insane step up from the BM800 I was using.
    Honestly I think it’s even better than most XLR microphones, I bought a Behringer C-1 when I was trying to step up my audio, and I found that the Samson was comparably better (however you have to keep in mind I was like 14, using one of those weird Chinese microphone phantom power blocks, without a decent soundboard)
    nowadays I’m using an AKG Perception microphone with a Scarlett soundboard, and I am still amazed by how good the Samson compares.
    I will probably pass it on to one of my friends, I want it to keep on blessing someone with what it can offer.

      @Podcastage  11 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for sharing your experience with it. Yeah in any untreated space, most mics are going to pick that up. To mitigate the most, make sure your'e using the cardioid polar pattern on the side of the mic, then get the mic closer to your mouth to increase the signal (voice) to background noise (reverb) ratio. You should be able to get pretty decent sounding recordings, but in a completely untreated room with a mic a little bit farther away with reflective surfaces around, it will certainly pick that up. Appreciate you sharing your thoughts. Happy recording.

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  Рік тому +2

      Yeah. I think it sounds better than many of the higher priced mics. The NT-USB Mini is certainly a mid forward mic which is going to be a turn off for a lot of people, but the additional support of the mixing/fx software is likely a big reason for it’s adoption rate. The Lewitt Wave 3 I think out perfroms the NT USB Mini, but it’s more than 50% more expensive and many people won’t want to pay that. I think the Rode is at a price point with a feature set that people are willing to pay even if it doesn’t offer the sound everyone wants.

  • @radek_osmulski
    @radek_osmulski Рік тому

    A big fan of your channel! 🙂 Learned a lot from you 🙏
    If I may please ask you a question -- say I want to record a conversation between two people sitting by a table, is there a single mic that could capture audio from both people well?
    And more importantly -- if I care about audio from just a single person (interviewee). Are cardioid mics always the way to go, they offer the best audio? Meaning, you would go for lavalier or shotgun mics for other considerations? (looks, comfort, etc?) But nothing beats a cardio mic wrt to audio quality?

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  11 місяців тому +1

      If you want a single mic to pick up both people, you would want a Figure 8 polar pattern mic. That will pick up audio from the front and the rear of the mic while rejecting sound from the sides. The issue with this is that it captures everything as a single mono source so you will need to do all your mixing between sound sources in the analog realm; meaning if one person speaks louder you'd need to move the mic farther from them so they are a similar level to the other person speaking. I would almost always prefer to have 2 separate mics for each person to have the ability to mix in post when necessary.
      On question 2 there seems to be a bit of confusion. Cardioid is a polar pattern (the area around the mic that picks up sound). There are dynamic, condenser, lavalier, and shotgun mics that are cardioid. The selection of the mic for capturing the individual and rejecting the other person depends on the distance between the mic and the sound source and where the person you want rejected is located. If they are at 180-degrees from the mic, then a cardioid would be the best, but if they are at 90-degrees off axis, then a figure 8 would do the best. So it's really a situational question you're asking and unfortunately there is not a blanket answer.
      Hope that was helpful. Happy recording.

    Have had mine for about 5 years and still go back to it when I'm travelling light but have to care about audio a little more and it still is a great little mic when on the go and needing better than a headset or webcam mic. It's showing it's age more now but there's not really any competition to it still

      5 years of use out of a mic this affordable is incredible. You've definitely got your money worth out of it I'd say. And yeah there's really not any competition to this specific microphone; something tiny for travel.

    With post processing softwares being incredibly good now, I've found this to be a very VERY good portable voice over mic. Picks up a crap load of handling noise, though.

    I have purchased the Fifine K690 in 2020, during COVID, I wanted a mic for my Zoom meetings. It was good, but it was a bit cumbersome for me to carry around. Then, after I tried my coworker's Samson Go Mic, I knew I bought the wrong one for my needs. I still think about buying one today for my future job interviews and Zoom conferences in a situation that I might have to travel around the country alot and would have to carry a mic and webcam around. Not sure that should I get the Go Video Mic instead, so that I can carry a webcam and a mic in just one piece.
    Awesome review as always!

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  8 місяців тому +1

      Sorry to hear you ended up buying a mic you think is wrong for you, but I'm glad the video is helping inform you on what may be right for you when it comes time to upgrade. I'm not sure about the webcam option because I haven't tried it, but also, I think this mic sounds best about 4-6" away from your mouth. IF you have a webcam 4-6" away from your mouth too, that's not going to sound great. So you would need to place the microphone in a position to get a good camera angle first and then just deal with the audio that you get.

    • @ustinho
      @ustinho 8 місяців тому

      @@Podcastage Right! I haven't thought about the distance of the mic. It is clear now that it is ideal to have the webcam and mic set up separately. I actually have the Logi C922 pro anyway, and adding a Samson Go Mic is not too bad, since they're both small. Thank you for pointing out about the distance aspect of this mic. I can decide which one I want for my travelling setup now.

      Eso es completamente discutible. Prefiero el Shure SM7b, pero el Electro Voice RE20 también es increíblemente popular para la transmisión y lo trataría muy bien en esa aplicación. Sé que hay varias emisoras que usan Sennheiser MD441U, pero esa no es mi favorita.

    Great mic indeed (had this for about 10 years i think). Here's my addendum; works with my Pixel7 (which is pretty freakin cool as a "field recorder"). There's a screw (I use torque 8 type) to lock you mic in place (or give it a bit or resistance, I suggest you grease the ball joint, swish it a bit, then lock it for resistance). Cheers!

    I was unable to find ANY mention anywhere, but this mic has in-built noise suppression (in windows sound control panel, for the mic, tick the "Enable Enhancements") that kills keyboard and non-speaking sounds pretty remarkably well. It's not intended for high fidelity recording but for meetings, and deserves more mention, at least SOMEWHERE 😂😂

    (English ain't my main language so if I say something wrong please correct me)
    I'm not professional or something but I've been using this mic for almost everything I have been recording for the last 10 months so I think I have some information that could be interesting to some people.
    I bought this microphone some months ago and, while it was great at the start being compared to my phone and a really cheap 3.5 jack mic, the more I use it the more I started to realize that it wasn't that.... Great. Specially in a non acoustic treatment room.
    It has this really "Thin" tone which makes the voices sound to aggressive. It requires a lot of post processing (mostly eq but you know sometimes is hard and sometimes is easy) and even though the size makes it really portable it hasn't been something I really used considering how much it requires to prepare a room in order to record something properly.
    Of course having this kind of problems helped me a lot to learn how to improvise and master my recordings, but considering I want to make music and some projects mainly as a hobby, I don't really like to have such a big trouble for ended up recording something that sounds barely decent.
    As I say I'm not a professional and I use this mic most of the time in a bedroom without acoustic treatment so probably your results may vary.
