Gaming literally runs in my blood. My Mom back in the early 1980's was a regular at the local Arcade. Whenever some guy asks why she and another girl friend of hers would get asked why they were there by someone from out of town (who didn't know them) she'd act like she didn't know what she was doing and then just KILL them at the game! It's because of her and my older sister that I never believed in the "girls can't play video games" belief and have been playing games since I was 4 years old as a confident girl gamer.

Honestly, any video from you I find interesting. You seem to focus on the few aspects I never thought of. Good enough for me. Not saying to ignore the critics, but do what you love doing. Whether the fans follow or not is second.
You kept saying "stupid rainbow company" and I was almost expecting a cameo from AVGN... fun video regardless though! It's interesting to hear about games from a non gamer type!

I'm surprised you didn't mention the video game crash of 1982. I know you didn't do a history lesson, but the ET Atari game is the symbol of the video game crash of 1982. You didn't even mention all the ET cartridges in the landfill. It Would make a great episode. BTW- If you ever find "The Adventures of LoLo" (or any of its sequels) get it. You'll love it! The cover makes it look like an adventure game, but it's really a puzzle game. It looks like you just run from one side of the room to another, but you discover that you must do everything just right, in the right order, while protecting yourself from being shot with blocks... For the Atari, you don't need an RF Modulator, you just need an RCA to RF connector adaptor. The RF signal is already generated in the unit. (Sorry for the 6 year delay in that information).
just about to post this, it's an rca female to F type male adapter. Eliminates most RF interference removing that switchbox, also helps putting ferrite beads on the cord too.
You could do a follow-up episode exploring some of the very obscure peripherals (such as a lottery cartridge for the NES and the Stock market access device for the Famicom).
My old family Super Nintendo was the same with the bottom very yellowed while the top was still its original gray. Apparently it was the flame retardant used that caused the yellowing for certain pieces. Can't wait to finish this episode. You always upload great stuff.
True (but not necessarily interesting) Story: The Sega Genesis was the first console that I ever bought with my own money, which was earned over the summer of 1990 by scooping up deer crap at the Wisconsin Deer Park in Wisconsin Dells. Thanks for this video, it was cool to see a gaming-related video from someone who's not really into it. Old-school games are my main hobby, so maybe I can shed some light on some of the issues you had. It's not unusual to see a Super Nintendo with one half of the casing clean and the other half yellowed. They transitioned from one type of plastic to another at some point, and sometimes the shells got mixed and matched. A completely non-yellowed Super Nintendo tends to fetch a premium price these days from serious collectors. Don't worry, you're not stupid for buying all those LJN games. They snapped up all of the cool licenses and then cheaped out on actually making the games. Interestingly, most (if not all) of the LJN adaptations of game shows for the NES were programmed by Rare, the same company that made Donkey Kong Country for SNES and many other classics. Your Atari joysticks probably didn't work with E.T. because baby Jesus's tears were shorting them out.
I will say, the MIDI theme of the Oddity Archive sounds oddly epic and would make for an awesome intro to an awesome game. As far as the dodginess of the SNES, maybe the cables are going bad? As far as the LJN games go, yeah... they're garbage. It's no surprise they aren't around anymore. For the PC Emulator bit... the MOMENT you said it was an adult game, I said aloud "Leisure Suit Larry"... and bam. As for the 2600, I guess you and I are among the rare class that owns a copy of ET apparently. Although I do envy you for having gotten it so cheap, since I got mine for about 45 bucks, coming with a bunch of games. All in all, I did enjoy this episode quite a bit, and I kinda hope for a return of the MIDI theme sometime in the future, that just sounds way too awesome.
Didn't expect an episode like this from you, interesting but it should have said ben's junk (insert your innuendo here). What I would like and expected when I clicked on this video would have been an episode about all those weird gaming tv shows that were broadcast in the 80's and 90's. It would have given me that beautiful history lesson and thought me something special that I wouldn't have gotten from all the other channels. That's why I came here and that's why I'll always stay here.
Back to the Future, playable or not, is a shitty game. In fact all of em are shitty games except the BTTF3 for the PC (Modestly good) and the awesome BTTF2 for Super Famicom.
In the 90's, a certain type of plastic was enforced to be used by companies who manufactured things like this, the plastic was some kind of fire retardant material, the only problem with it is that it yellows over time. Great episode!
Only somewhat true. The bigger reason is that ABS plastic naturally turns yellow throw oxidation. The most permanent way to fix/prevent this is to paint the plastic. IBM did that back in the day and almost all of them are still pearly white.
It would've served us right if you'd had video of nothing but Game & Watch for pestering you incessantly, but that probably would've been at least as painful for you as for us. Love the MIDI theme.
Actually my old SNES does the same thing, the yellow bottom and grey top. I think it's because the top and bottom are composed if different kinds of plastic? I'm not too sure though. It has to be oxidization of some sort though, because we've never taken our SNES apart.
SNESs yellowed in different parts depending on when it was produced. I think the ones that yellow fully are original production ones, then there are ones that yellow on the bottom(like yours and mine), ones that yellow on the top, and a few that don't yellow. It all depends on the plastic used.
10:00 I have a different assumption about the plastic because I have seen the half and half before. Mine is stranger... It is mostly yellow except for around the controller ports and the cartridge slot. I think it has something to do with how the plastic was processed and different batches had different end results in terms of aging. Who knows, though...
That is a model 2 sega gen. it can expand to sega CD. The model 1 sega CD doesnt bode well with it, but you can still use it. The model 2 sega CD (the one that looks like an old sony walkmanCD) is what was designed for it. Personally i have the model 1 cd (perfect condition w/thermal plate) and the model 1 sega gen. There was addtionally a 32x that you could install in the cartriage slot. All of this being said there was also a sega genesis model 3. In the 3rd model genesis, you could not expand to the CD nor the 32x. For a good laugh google the sega genesis tower! The yellowing that you talk about is actually the oxidation of the plastics. Its a pain but easy fix. Gut it system of all boards and components and soak it for a bit in this chemical bath that removes the oxidation and youre golden, errr white! Love this show BTW.
I was a video game NUT back in the early 80s, but didn't have any money to buy a game system then. I was one of the first to get an NES, when it was only available with the robot and gun. My loyalty switched to Sega since they brought out the Genesis in the US more than a year before the Super NES came out- it was out in Japan but Nintendo's people said the US "wasn't ready" for it yet! I just can't get into the current games- they're too complicated to figure out how to control and then they take too long to play. I'm still waiting for a definitive documentary about the history of video games, going up to 1990 or so.
At first I was astonished that you didn't know how to get out of the pit in E.T. but as I thought about it more, I realized that without the manual E.T. really doesn't make sense at all. The world wraps at multiple points which you discovered, and the symbol at the top of the screen indicates either an item you need or the direction you need to go. Sadly I can say I beat E.T. when I was younger. Not much of a feat I know, but it really is nonsensical without directions. And yes, it is not a good game.
Ben, you can avoid switching the RF modulator if you have one of those auto-switching modulators like they sold at Walmart in the 90s, handles 4 inputs, composite and S-video, all NTSC. Turn one device on and it takes over (sorta, you have to turn some things off now and then) and outputs to your video recorder or TV. No, I never ditched my 27-40 year old Trinitrons, they will outlive me (because there is a poltergeist in there of course).
Your Genesis look like a Model 2 one. So it can still hook up to a Sega CD and the 32X. The only ones that I know of that can't are either the Genesis 3, and the recent Plug-and-Play Genesis. Still, decent episode.
The only thing the Model 2 Genesis can't really do is accommodate the Power Base Converter to play Master System games, just because it was made to fit around the circle on the Model 1 Genesis. Though there are unofficial converters you can buy and Sega did sell a redesigned one in Europe where the Master System was more popular and was still getting new games into the 90s alongside the 16 bit consoles.
I've had an original "toaster" NES for (I think) three years now (it was an antique shop find), and it appears to be an earlier model (judging by the lack of the old Nintendo phone support sticker with Mario holding a wrench). I also have a Game Boy Pocket (which my dad found in the attic of his new home, complete with a copy of one of the Tiny Toons video games (IIRC) stuck in it). I've been looking into getting an Atari 2600 Plus (likely because I don't feel like getting a separate 2600 and 7800 (the latter is backwards-compatible with the 2600), and the use of HDMI for video output) UPDATE: Got an Atari 2600+ for Christmas
Anticipation (NES) was basically Pictionary, if I remember correctly. Hey, even non-gamers can appreciate You Don't Know Jack. Love that you used ET for the Atari 2600.. that whole story was fascinating. (You were supposed to jump before the second line.)
I fast forwarded to the Atari 2600 section. You appear to have a great well organized collection. I have the parts to hook up mine, just a matter of putting it all together. Just recently subscribed to your channel as well.
The yellowing on the bottom of the SNES has nothing to do with a "Frankenstein" machin. The early SNES models had a plastic that became oxygenated over time and woud turn yellow. There are numerous UA-cam videos about how to fix it.
alltho you didnt see any "leaky" caps seems you might have a dry cap. probly just in the power supply in the filtercap just replace any can caps and you should be fine ffrom now on
Believe it or not, Ben, a lot of Super Nintendos are actually the crossover of yellow and gray; it was their shoddy attempt at fixing the yellowing problem.
When I think of Benny Boy reviewing old electronics and his attempts at restoring them, I think of a girl who's been stuck in a computer for 10 years and materialized by a genius.
the yellowing is a difference in the mix levels in the two different plastic moldings. The yellow part got a less than great batch. could be due to any number of manufacturing reasons. www.ampacet.com/faqs/yellowing-and-pinking-white-pe-pp/
u dont dovid gams bekuz u r teh sucs. The castle scene in the beginning reminds me of when I took 14 hits of acid and looked at a book from the 1970's. I could taste, feel, and touch the 1970's.
The only console that I've ever owned and still do is an NES. It's an old original system and I couldn't say why exactly, but it still looks pretty much the same as when I purchased it that day so many years ago, with a few repairs. A few controller purchases. I was told initially that I should keep it as dust and humidity free as possible, which I did my best when it comes to this. I have a few games and surprisingly the system is in really good shape. Admittedly. I haven't used it much either and it spends most of it's existence in a box. My son and I did however beat Super Mario bros 1 and 3, and Castlevania, back in the day. As my handle here indicates... I am a really poor gamer, or rather non-gamer. The modern controllers with all of the bells and whistles are something that I can not grasp (figuratively and literally) Quite the bit frustrating contraptions to me they are. And so, this is MY extensive gaming experience along with some point and click. Edit... Oh yeah... I do however really enjoy watching games being played by the experts.
Oddity Archive 71.5 Video Game Commercials? You can riff on those all day long, its right in your wheelhouse. There is a way to get rid of the yellowing on your SNES, but it literally takes days to complete. you have to leave it out in the sun with a compound on it. If you are still having trouble with your Atari controllers, just plug your Genesis controller into the Atari and you can use the directional buttons and the A button. What about another video on the Oddity game consoles? I know you may not have them but it would be interesting for the history lesson.
Someone should put together a DVD of EVERY video game commercial EVER, from the 1972 Odyssey right up to today (I could stop at the 90s, but others might want more than that.)
Regarding your 2600: You don't need an RF TV/Game switch box anymore. Get yourself a Male Coax to RCA Female adapter (available at any Radio Shack for a couple of bucks) and it goes right to work without having to switch between TV and GAME. (Granted, may not be as helpful if you need to still use that input for anything else.)
Correction: They are still in business. It's just now another company owns them and partnered with Sprint. The last time I went into one, it sounded like from the employee I was talking to that they were not going to be pushing for new products. However, in recent months they named Nick Cannon (Yes the rapper, but he's investing in the company) as Chief Creative Officer a few months ago and he's pushing for a better set of products for the Shack. So they still have 1700 stores open and are not ready to close shop yet. We'll see if the new management can turn around the mess that is the Radioshack...
Seicross is what we call a "Shoot 'Em Up" :) I'm more at an intermediate level when it comes to knowledge of Retro Gaming. The yellowing of consoles is called Oxydization. Oxygen will turn white plastic in the Nintendo systems yellowish over time.
I believe the original zapper (light gun or gun) is Grey I believe. Also the zapper only works properly and perfectly on the old dial tvs for the nes zapper.
I watched your channel because you DIDN'T have video games on it! Even though I am the biggest fan of old games! My interests in your videos are regarding classic television and are purely academic. That said, I hope this video placates those who insist on having everyone be candid and talk about everything.
I know this comment's 3 years late to the party, but I'm kinda disappointed you didn't cover the history of gaming. It's extremely expansive and as an extremely young form of media it can actually be traced back to its orgins, unlike film. There's lots of interesting bits of history... the stock crash, the feud between Sony and Nintendo over the SNES CD addon (before Philips stepped in,) indie gaming as a whole, it's all a great read. Having said that, if you're not a gamer it can also be a tiring read as you're not terribly familiar with a lot of the content and gamers in general are extremely vulnerable to hyperbole (myself included.) Even then I wouldn't call games in general 'AV Geekery,' as consoles and PCs tend to develop as technology itself develops rather than stagnating and staying on one format, the technology including the TV itself. The modern TV for example can usually reach 4k resolution with is actually a higher resolution then the human eye itself, so at this point it's a matter of developing the console and PC to a point where it can generate photorealistic 3D models before games start looking like reality. Besides I come to the Oddity Archive for stuff I don't know and gaming in general - and its business practices - is something I already know a fuckload about... Plus, as I said before, I don't think gaming qualifies as AV, though it certainly has both audio and video. What separates it from film these days is the concept of 'control.' Nothing less and nothing more... having said that if I can recommend a game that gives you, as a non-gamer, a better idea of how gaming has evolved into a fine art form, let alone a piece of media, I'd recommend playing Valve's Portal and more importantly its sequel Portal 2. While it's set within Valve's Half-Life universe, they're meant to be played separate from eachother and most elements that connect eachother together are small cameos within both series rather than story elements.
I have a few video game consoles a wii a game boy advance a 3ds an xbox( which sadly doesn’t read its games anymore) an n64( high for some reason doesn’t work anymore) an nes a Super Nintendo classic an nes plug n play clone at games Sega genesis the original Sega genesis and the latest console I’ve got is the Wii U which I mainly use for games and UA-cam and the internet
PepsiWithCoke Purple for putrid gameplay Blue for bad musical abominations Green for graphical farts and garlic Yellow for piss-poor lack of loyalty to source material Orange for orange you a fucking idiot Red for high-stress anger inducing masochism Put them together, and you got all of the colors of the shit rainbow, Hooray LJN.
25:10 I think "world class Track Meet" sold a lot of money on ebay you should look into it. My cousin had one back in the day and she sold it long time ago and I kick my self very day for not asking for it lol. Or I could be thinking of another game.
Ur thinking of its bandai original name stadium events which yea its worth buttloads cuz most copies were purposely destroyed by nintendo when the snatched up the rights redesigned the family fun fitness mat into the power pad and re released the game under their license as world class track meet phew what a mouthful of a history lesson XD
It's more complicated then that. Search Pat the NES Punk Sealed Stadium Events. You'll know you've found the right videos (AN EPIC SAGA!) when he starts talking about the guy with a case of 6 sealed Stadium Events. He'll also go into some little known facts about the game and the idea that it may not be as rare as we think...
how about the next O.A.give histories on those dead in the water video game companies? Like that rainbow one. If it could be in the style of episode on generic videos, with cartoons. Nothing epic, keep your humor and wit. Love to hear it.
You know, I /am/ kind of expecting a video about the Philips CD-I at one point, because it's a hell of an oddity - a mismash of game console, edutainment device, and movie player. Do you have one? I have a bunch of games in my trade pile I could send your way if you do. Edit: To clarify, you'd get them for free. No need for a trade. :p
Fucking topgun, friday the 13th, Back to the future, you sure love LJN dont ya? Buch of laughing joking numbnuts and Fucking ET? that box is jame rolfe's nightmares, all you need is simons quest lol
Zoë the Pirate - Did they rent movies? Here in Austin, we have H-E-B. They had their own video game rental section, which eventually became an entire store. (H-E-B Video Central. We had one in the same shopping center as the H-E-B.) I don't remember when Hollywood Video bought them out. Anyway, I think Ben was saying they used to rent games and movies. Apparently, they sold off all the games and movies when they shut that section down, and Ben got a good deal. I don't know how old you are, but do you remember when grocery stores rented movies? It was very common, although it seems odd in hindsight. (Tom Thumb did it too. That's the only store I remember for sure renting movies at. But we were mainly an H-E-B family.)
If you ever in the future would like a collab partner for videogame based stuff im available benny boy and quite the savy gaming nerd with a pretty decently ever growing collection of systems and games i know its not your cup of tea or expertise but yea if ever in the future just gimme a hollar bud i got nothing better to do in my free time than nerd out all alone x.x

(and did)
keep it up!
It took me years to figure out that the first song in the Back to the Future NES version was "Power of Love". Well... supposedly anyway.
this feels more like a ben's junk episode then a proper archive thing. Still fairly interesting.

Ah, Game Boy Monopoly. Isaac's a sucker, Arthur's a prick, and Gertrude compulsively collects utilities.
Never played GB Monoploy to know about that and didn't think someone with the technical know how could simulate AI with personality on the gameboy. I know they did it on the Virgin Games PC version...
The way that they buy and sell is the only real personality clue.

You've probably heard, from gamers none the less, you seem very similar to a character named Otacon.
I hope he'll be my technical support officer when I decide to begin my fight against The Patriots.
"It's just like my japanese karaoke laserdiscs!"
You seem like the kid with the Genesis. I was the kid that was almost two generations behind at any given time.

Awesome episode! Even if you're not much of a gamer (me neither) it's still fun to see your collection and hear you talk about the various consoles.
I still wish you'd do an episode about wild feeds, just because they're inherently odd to people who are slightly too young for C-band.

37:55 - That thing kinda looks like Woodstock from Peanuts *-* :D
The Sega CD originally went under the console, then a new one went beside it.
Worth it for that cool version of the theme song.
I had a SNES, one friend had a Sega Genesis, another had a TurboGrafx, and a fourth had a Neo Geo. We were pretty covered.
There are simple games being made now. You just got to know where to look...
I really enjoyed this. I had never thought of you doing video games. But now that you have, I really enjoyed it Thank You
If you still have the SNES &/or NES, try Retro-brighting it/them.
Leisure Suit Larry, E.T., LJN Games...yes sir, you're no gamer. Stick with reminiscing about antiquated video & audio technology.
Agreed, although I do have to give him props for Leisure Suit Larry.
Sega had a great version of Jeopardy, still have my childhood collection too.
We have now joined the eighth generation of gaming with Nintendo's Wii U rocking the world
At first I was astonished that you didn't know how to get out of the pit in E.T. but as I thought about it more, I realized that without the manual E.T. really doesn't make sense at all.
Loved the 8-bit play on your theme, Ben. Did you make it yourself?
I've been looking into getting an Atari 2600 Plus (likely because I don't feel like getting a separate 2600 and 7800 (the latter is backwards-compatible with the 2600), and the use of HDMI for video output)
UPDATE: Got an Atari 2600+ for Christmas
God LJN N(the rainbow) was the WORST ever. Except for spiderman rampage on Genesis, those were actually pretty ballin'.
ljn Didnt develop the titles, its not their fault, they only published them
do an episode on talk show hosts like Morton downey jr and wally George and William f bucley jr.
alltho you didnt see any "leaky" caps seems you might have a dry cap. probly just in the power supply in the filtercap just replace any can caps and you should be fine ffrom now on
Believe it or not, Ben, a lot of Super Nintendos are actually the crossover of yellow and gray; it was their shoddy attempt at fixing the yellowing problem.
Retr0bright or the homemade version will get the yellow out of that plastic. It's a reversible reaction between the fire retardant and UV.
Your Genesis looks to be a Model 2, Ben. There should be an expansion port on the side to hook up to the Sega CD. It also supports the horrid 32x.
When I think of Benny Boy reviewing old electronics and his attempts at restoring them, I think of a girl who's been stuck in a computer for 10 years and materialized by a genius.
+Hal Emmerich You're a fan of Weird Science as well :)
newstarcadefan Jeremy must be a fan of Weird Science
how else would he get the idea to materialize Aelita
the yellowing is a difference in the mix levels in the two different plastic moldings. The yellow part got a less than great batch. could be due to any number of manufacturing reasons.

Sorry, but what is "wild feed" footage?
Satellite feeds intended for TV stations but picked up on the big dishes.
wait. you mentioned family computer. do you mean your family's computer or the japanese famicom? stupid question but i wasnt sure.
I feel like anyone who had a Genesis or SNES had NBA Jam. Did they spontaneously generate?
u dont dovid gams bekuz u r teh sucs. The castle scene in the beginning reminds me of when I took 14 hits of acid and looked at a book from the 1970's. I could taste, feel, and touch the 1970's.
Were you drunk when you typed out an attempt at a comment 😂
Half of it turning yellow is pretty common
37:52 It's dabbing way before it was cool.
Someone should put together a DVD of EVERY video game commercial EVER, from the 1972 Odyssey right up to today (I could stop at the 90s, but others might want more than that.)
eyeh8nbc excellent idea 😊 I would find that DVD a lot more entertaining that most of the programmes on TV right now!!!
eyeh8nbc good channel by the way, subbed ;)
Regarding your 2600: You don't need an RF TV/Game switch box anymore. Get yourself a Male Coax to RCA Female adapter (available at any Radio Shack for a couple of bucks) and it goes right to work without having to switch between TV and GAME. (Granted, may not be as helpful if you need to still use that input for anything else.)
If you can find a Radioshack that is.
My RadioShack went out of business a year ago
Also LJN is what we call Laughing Joking Numbnuts. They released a spiderman carnage game that didn't suck and isn't too terrible.
Does the host hide his face because he shuns the spotlight or because he is a fugitive on the lamb?
+Jeremy Bridges Both
I watched your channel because you DIDN'T have video games on it! Even though I am the biggest fan of old games! My interests in your videos are regarding classic television and are purely academic. That said, I hope this video placates those who insist on having everyone be candid and talk about everything.
I had a SEGA Genesis as a kid. I had a shit ton of games on it...
Btw did anyone see one of the files had been last modified in 1957?
Looks like you're supposed to follow the arrows on ET, not that it matters.
I am going to call LGN "that stupid rainbow company" now.
AVGN put it better, "The Shit Rainbow".
LJN
Laughing Joking Numbnuts
PepsiWithCoke Purple for putrid gameplay
Blue for bad musical abominations
Green for graphical farts and garlic
Yellow for piss-poor lack of loyalty to source material
Orange for orange you a fucking idiot
Red for high-stress anger inducing masochism
Put them together, and you got all of the colors of the shit rainbow, Hooray LJN.
I'd love that. :)
35:25 Did it have bloodprints on it, Ben?
"Rainbow Company" you mean LJN?
Fucking topgun, friday the 13th, Back to the future, you sure love LJN dont ya? Buch of laughing joking numbnuts and Fucking ET? that box is jame rolfe's nightmares, all you need is simons quest lol
My childhood self wasn't that bright.
Neither was mine lol, Love your work benny boy, keep it up!
The wild feeds video I'd find interesting, if you ever chose to do it.
LJN = "that stupid rainbow company"
LJN the "stupid rainbow company" xD
Where does the intro song come from?
It's an 8-bit play on his usual thene.
Then what is the name of his original theme song?
***** 'Pavanned'.
Dafuq is up with all of the code lyoko videos?
Huh... I don't remember King Soopers ever selling video games. o.O
@26:33 well they aren't referred to by the Angry Video Game Nerd as "Laughing Joking Numbnuts" for nothing lol. LJN is absolute garbage
Torgo on the Nintendo!
Am i the only person ever that was able to finish the E.T. game?
Nope I used to beat it all the time back in the day. And its not as bad of a game as people make it out to be. Bad sure WORST GAME EVAR no
Bob Patel Superman 64 on the Nintendo 64 is the worst video game ever!
Where are you Guru Larry?!
NAHMBAH WAHN AHNSAAAH
I like video games, but I am horrible at them
If you ever in the future would like a collab partner for videogame based stuff im available benny boy and quite the savy gaming nerd with a pretty decently ever growing collection of systems and games i know its not your cup of tea or expertise but yea if ever in the future just gimme a hollar bud i got nothing better to do in my free time than nerd out all alone x.x
m gad yu dudvide gams
can I have a SNES?
+Ruan Breach Yes, easily. There are many emulators out there. Just download one of them and search for games. Torrents are the best way!
