- Band saw table build.
The next major upgrade for my band saw - a table for the vertical position
This is a continuation of my conversion of my horizontal metal band saw into a horizontal/vertical saw.
This table install presented a few design challenges due to limited clearance. In the horizontal position the table can't really overhang the blade, and generally this saw didn't offer a lot of space.
I made a quick release dovetailed system so that I can rapidly reposition the table. I loosely took inspiration from a camera tripod mount in this design
Unfortunately there were a few audio sync issues a 'dead spot' I was trying new editing workflows and it didn't work out too well. I think the video is still watchable despite these.
I have a patreon account if you wish to help support the channel. Through this you can get early access and more

anti rust coating? Well I am glad you asked. Try Silicone Free car wax from Meguires, Especially good for woodworking tools because it has no silicone and that stuff ruins finishing efforts
Thanks for the tip! I will look into it
Gday Tommy, that’s a bloody brilliant design, you certainly put a lot of thought into this, if you ever get some spare “thinking” brain cells throw’ um my way, please, great build and some great video tricks, I did think my ipad went flat when the screen went black about half way though, you got me there, thank Tommy , Cheers Matty
Cheers Matty
I was inspired by a camera dovetail mount, and I'm glad it worked
Yeah let's run with the extended black being deliberate... lol
One tip mate if you have a piece of metal that is rusty on both sides you are better off giving one side a good clean first I use a knotted wire wheel on my angle grinder no mor slip on the chuck
Thanks 👍. Yeah I've taken to cleaning off metal these days before it goes to the mill so that I don't generate rusty dust that can get into the ways
@@TomMakeHere great work bud loving both channels got itch for a few restorations myself just finished building my vapour blaster cabinet which is going to help massively keep up the good work mate
Nice video and love the channel. “I gotta improve the vise, modify the cabinet, add a laser instead of the saw blade” all in a days work haha
I think Jimmy Diresta collab'd with someone and made a laser bandsaw lol
Not going to lie, if it was within my abilities and budget I would lol
TommyGun Machining totally the reasonable thing to do 👍🏼😃😂
Nice job on the dovetail slide feature, and I like how you made it so that the horizontal function is preserved. Considering the deal you got on it, that saw is going to be very useful for you indeed!
I couldn't live without a bandsaw now
I need finish off the final touches soon
Thanks for watching Everett
Great video man, how many tpi is that saw blade??
I'm not sure it is reasonably fine as I tend to cut thinner material as well as solid stock
It is a variable pitch blade so it is a bit more universal
This is a nice idea, so it could become a versatile usability
Yes I love being able to quickly change it
Nice work! That Hercus mill reminds me of year 11 engineering class, last period on a hot Friday afternoon.
Cheers!
It's a good solid machine for it's size. I plan to increase the vertical travel though.
So disappointing, we never got to do machining at school. But I probably wouldn't have appreciated it back then
Damn you Tommy, now I have to make a table for mine 🤷🏻♂️
Ha ha do it! I see it being very useful
Hey nice knob Tom. :D
PS: Great table mod. What an awesome build. Looking forward to seeing the next mods you have planned.
I swear I've seen a similar one recently?
@@TomMakeHere pure coincidence, I swear. (Otherwise would have given credit!) :)
Good one Tommy. Maybe some furniture wax for the table to combat rust:) mines wood at the moment but not for long.
Cheers
Peter
I'm interested to see how this spray wax holds up. It has left a reasonable film on the surface
Thanks for watching
“Gauge block bingo” 😂😂😂
At work we use plain hard wax (Simoniz) from the auto store for all non coated surfaces. A controlled environment, but stands up well in more humid places as well.
I might look into that. This stuff looks like it might work, but I don't know how durable it will be
VERY NICELY ENGINEERED AND BUILT!
Cheers! I think it's going to be a good thing
The algorithm brought me here and I thank UA-cam for it; it's like watching the Geoffrey Croker of machining at work - something about the humour in the delivery :)
Thanks! I have heard that both the New Zealand and Australian humor is similar ha ha
@@TomMakeHere I should have said .. I do realise you're not both kiwis 😁 I reckon Tasmanian humour might be drier than Australian in general, maybe that's it - island humour 😉
My next project is my band saw. When you cut flat plate it takes some time, if you put material on one side i.e. lift a side up in the vice. It cuts faster.
I've always heard that on a bandsaw you ideally want more teeth in contact so put things flat, and on a chop saw you want minimal contact so stand it up
Maybe it doesn't matter so long as you have at least 3 teeth or so in contact
Awesome table, first thing I did to my hori bandsaw was convert it to vertical, I used 6mm stainless for the table, so no rust issues, I also made the table so I can change out a blade easily, just back the tension off, open the cover, and the blade generally leaps out at me ;)
Stainless would be a great option. 6 mm would be plenty thick enough
Actually I probably need to change this blade, it has a lot of broken teeth from before I had it
@@TomMakeHere I only use Bi-metal blades, I'm getting 14TPI blades from a place in QLD(ebay), they do a fantastic job on Titanium and blade steels.
I'm going to try and mod my BS-4 bandsaw so that I can run 1/4'' wide blades, the 1/2'' wide blades aren't real good at cutting out delicate blade type shapes:), I'll set all the bearings forward, and either run rubber "tyres" on the wheels, or turn up some more, that won't cause a problem for the offset teeth, plus other problems I haven't run into yet???
Perfectly acceptable VG style knob on there right now 😁
Cheers!
Yeah I love this style of knob, easy and it looks good
Genius idea! And a great video!
Cheers! I think this is one of the most useful things I've done in my workshop
stunt DRO tricks and all!
I love the DRO. I really couldn't go without it now
I need to get the vertical axis hooked up though lol
Yeey for some horizontal milling.
It is a very useful option. I think any mill I get in the future will be the universal type
@@TomMakeHere that is also my wish but door/stairway to my basement is no wider than 80cm. If that wasn't a problem, i have my eye on one and brand beeing Heckler und Koch, i'm very interested.
Nice upgrades there Tommy. Cheers Kevin
Cheers Kevin
I think it's going to be a great addition
great job !
Cheers! Thanks for watching
Great project and video!!
Cheers! I'm happy with how it turned out
I guess it's quite off topic but do anyone know a good place to stream new series online?
That’s a really nice project. Lots of different operations.
Cheers! Yeah it was more involved than I initially thought
