  • Band Saw Upgrade to a flippable horizontal/vertical configuration
    In this video I convert a horizontal band saw into a switchable vertical / horizontal band saw.
    I also make various improvements and fixes to the machine. I know the saw doesn't fully reach a vertical position but it is close enough to use, and I think it's within my comfort once I mount a table.
    This WP210 band saw was sitting around unused for about 6 years at my work (it was too small apparently). It made sense to put it to use in my shed instead!
    The next video will focus on making a nice quick change dovetail work table for the vertical position, and finalising other workholding aspects and tidying up my work
    Also apologies on the inconsistent lighting throughout the project. As soon as the world settles down I'll get some thick curtains on my sliding door.
    And also yes, the 'click to analyse' shouldn't be there!

    Nice video, but you need to make it go completely vertical for your OCD viewers, pretty please.
    Regards.

      I know it's bugging me too
      I will see what I can do!

    Might as well go fully vertical or you will be at modifying it in a few months!

    Nice work - it's going to be very handy. Can the castings be modified to allow full upright? Also when it's full upright, it needs space at the rear, so - might as well stick a couple of feet on the back to stop it tipping.
    Great video editing :)
    Cheers,
    Craig

      I will investigate modding castings vs tilting the whole saw as one of the next steps
      The saw is actually really stable in both positions, so much that I don't think I need a lock for the vertical position which is nice. I'll reassess when I get the table sorted and properly try it out

      @@TomMakeHere Yep - I have never used the lock for mine when it's vertical. It's very stable like that. Looking forward to a follow up.

    I was going to make a remark that involved actresses and bishops and rigid tools but thought better of it.😉

    Aren't arc shots a turd to get so they actually look good? I still haven't found a great recipe for getting them. Having this unit with vertical capability is a huge feature, I have one of the small ubiquitous import units that does horizontal as well as vertical and quite appreciate that function.

      I sort of got it a few videos back, then I changed my filming setup lol
      Even a horizontal bandsaw is proving great. I think having the vertical capacity will be the icing on the cake. I will get it fully vertical first, because I seem to have upset people with OCD lol

    You should have left the base cabinet as is - just put metal blocks between the base and the bandsaw - easier to clean , a better working height for vertical , a bigger horizontal table permanently attached for quick jobs as it will go down in the gap when horizontal sawing - an easier modification - it took me 10 years to think of this - "D'oh!"

    These are AWESOME saws. Most of the nice ones are made in taiwan. This one in the vid looks a tad older than my one. Best things to do to these older ones is add the hydraulic blade tensioner and a blade cleaner wire wheels, add grease nipples to the swiveling base section so you can easily regrease it without pulling it all apart. And cut a red scotch bright pad to go under that grate where all the metal filings acumulated to act as a filter to stop all the filings going down there that will not only save the life of your coolant pump but make clean up about a billion times easier as you just scrape the top of the machine with a thin piece of metal to get rid of all the metal filings.

      This saw (and my drill press) had been sitting abandoned at work, tucked away into a corner for years. I managed to snatch it up
      Thanks for watching

    It needs a kick stand in the back so you can fly it vertical. just enough to prevent flipping backward when the weight shifts. Kool Project.

      I'm going to modify the casting to make it fully vertical I've decided
      That will be coming up along with the table build

    Hi Tommy. Having it cut vertical will definitely be a useful modification. Regards Kevin

      Absolutely! I see myself freestyling gussets and rough cutting in preparation for machining with this thing

    Awesome video, but you need to get it fully vertical or you will be making another video on how to make a not so vertical band saw vertical.. and thanks heaps for the arduino code..

    Why not just raise it off the base? Redrill stops location, I really doubt it is a unique casting, they all are horizontal/ vertical.

    • @TomMakeHere
      @TomMakeHere  4 роки тому

      There is a large lever at the front that clamps the swivel vice. If I chock up raise the castings I'd have to re cut the base to suit the lever, etc
      I also find the working height is quite comfortable at the moment

    Gday Tommy, good to see your going well, the bandsaw is not far from being vertical, just that bit short, nice brake press also, I’m getting a little jealous, great video, I’m looking forward to see how you make the table, take care and stay safe down there mate, Matty

    • @TomMakeHere
      @TomMakeHere  4 роки тому +1

      I know, I think I'll get it the rest of the way vertical
      The press brake was a nice to have, but there was a mess up with an order about 6 months ago and I had to make up the difference so I got it as well. To be honest a press brake would be more useful, this thing has limited capacity
      Yeah the table will be fun with it's own challenges

    It’s always amazing how few more welds add to the rigidity of things

    • @TomMakeHere
      @TomMakeHere  4 роки тому

      Absolutely, although I was surprised at how much of a change it made in his case with the base just being sheet metal. I expected it to still flex somewhat

    Foot activated lever to chock up the front by an inch or two, aught to get the blade vertical!

    Great work Tommy, love seeing something made to do something it wasn't designed to do. Very important to address the area's that can be effected with the the "hack and slash" like the additional loading on the various support members. Great to see Flannel in the shop, I think it should be part of the standard dress code.

      That's a point
      I'll see how this turns out. The base is a bit awkward in the vertical position so maybe I'll use these upgrades to propel the next upgrade!
