Xenoblade 1 was a life-changing game for me. It completely rejuvenated my passion for games. Excited for you to experience this amazing series! I would even go so far to say Xenoblade 3 is my favorite game on Switch, with Definitive Edition a close second.

Hey Clayton, I've never been a fan of JRPG's but I've given persona 5 royal and FF7 remake a proper go and I have completely shifted. I then stumbled across your channel and your love for JRPG's really resonates with me. I now realise that the reason I finally appreciate them is due to the way you can completely escape from reality. Games arent the same these days but JRPG's feel like they still are... a fun immersive video game that doesn't have to be real or grounded in reality. You don't have to compete, have an opinion, or follow the crowd, you just clock off, get cosy and enjoy the experience and feel completely disconnected.

Exactly! I feel like JRPGs still have that magic of exploration and escapism that you don’t find in a lot of of other video games

What a way to start my day, by listening at Makna Forest theme.
To me Xenoblade is so close to my heart, it battles constantly against the Zelda series to take the 1st spot as my favorite games ever.
If there's a Fire Emblem game I suggest both you and your kid to try, it's Fire Emblem Awakening on 3DS. It was my first and it made me a fan.

Whoa~ nice collection 😮! The JRPGs that I've been wanting to sink my teeth (metaphorically, of course) are Etrian Odyssey, Atelier Series, Ys Series, Fire Emblem Series, Dragon Quest Series, Xenoblade Chronicles and fairly quite a few others. If there's any games that I've been trying to complete, it would be Ys IX: Monstrum Nox, Shin Megami Tensei V & IV (I still want to play Apocalypse), Tales Series (I hope they port Berseria, Xillia & Zestiria to the Switch), Tokyo Xanadu + etc. I do also like Action JRPGs like the Yakuza & Judgment series; they're my therapy for me. Monster Hunter is another game that I like to play as well.

Sora no Kiseki, Sen no Kiseki, Kuro no Kiseki are absolute masterpieces, I highly recommend those. (Be careful, they might eat up to 1000 hours all combined if you want to see everything). Especially the Sen no series has something very interesting, since you begin as a small student without any experience nor unique skills. (Additionally I somewhat recommend Tokyo Xanadu as well, especially EX+ since it has a additional post game story which was quite interesting) The combat in TX isn't the best since it was one of their first action attempts but the story is very well done

Its a trip seeing a professional journalist type like you talking about his love for JRPGs to Xenoblade music.
I wish there was more of this on UA-cam.
If youre looking for a really long and deep series of JRPGs I'd suggest the Trails series. Its a series that has probably the mosy interesting setting in any game in my opinion.
Imagine if the world went from pre industrial revolution levels of technology to tech close to our current level in the real world in the span of 50 years instead of the around 300 that it took us.
Also theres pocket watches that allow you to throw fireballs.

    • @Ejohns1004
      @Ejohns1004 4 місяці тому

@@ClaytonMorris if I could make a suggestion of play order. The series takes place on a continent named Zemuria all in about a 10 year period, so every game builds off the last lore wise, and is 3 sub series deep right now with a 4th coming west starting this year. Those subseries start with 3 games of Trails in the Sky, which takes place in the country of Liberl, then the city-state of Crossbell had 2 games, after that the Erabonian Empire had 4 games. Erabonia is in a cold war with the Republic of Calvard which has an arc of its one coming west soon.
I TOTALLY GET that this sounds intimidating and like I just gave you a bunch of homework, so I am going to make a bold suggestion: if you are all interested skip the Sky and Crossbell arcs and try Trails of Cold Steel 1 the game that starts the Erabonian arc. This is the most modern arc in terms of game design and does a great job at on boarding new players to the world and game mechanics of the series.
If you like Cold Steel 1 then you will love the rest of the series. Its on Steam and PS4 and goes on sale for $20 or so all the time.
Also if you do end up playing it, I hope you enjoy Xenoblade 2 its one of my favorite game of all time with probably the vest soundtrack in anything IMO. Seriously, look up "You Will Recall Our Names". Its an incredible boss theme that is straight up orchestrated metal.

    Favorite JRPGs...?
    - Final Fantasy VII for PS1 -- I still have my original launch copy in perfect condition. I have absolutely no idea how I managed that either...(?) I had played video games for a ~decade when FF7 came out & I think that was really the 1st JRPG I had ever played...(?) & Prior to the PS1, I had plenty of systems to try a JRPG, but it just never happened that I recall -- I had an NES, a Genesis, a Sega CD, a 3DO, all before my PS1 & I can't think of one JRPG I owned until the PS1 arrived...
    - Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete, which I believe launched on another system, but I had it on PS1 & it was awesome
    - Grandia II for Dreamcast had great gameplay
    - FFVIII & FFX for PS1 & PS2 I also appreciated
There are certainly more that I have played in my day..., but I suppose those were the real impactful ones because I am otherwise drawing a huge blank... Oh! I do remember Total Recall for NES. It wasn't an RPG of any sort, but I remember owning that game & it was quite possibly one of the worst video games I've ever played -- great movie; but such a horrid video game. This would have been before GamePro was out & when I was young enough, my parents would pick games off the shelf to buy that I would then have to play. But GamePro & EGM - I don't think it was really until these took off that JRPGs (save for Nintendo games) were really even given their day in the States for a lot of young gamers.

I find it really interesting that trying Fire Emblem Engage ended up rekindling your love for JRPGs! The 3DS Fire Emblem games were my introduction to the series, and I’ve played every new entry since. I definitely agree with you and prefer protagonists that feel like real characters opposed to a self insert. Three Houses does have a protagonist that doesn’t speak and is meant to be the self insert, but man the story and other main/supporting characters are really good.
Also cool that you picked up Xenoblade! The entire trilogy really does have gorgeous environments and background music to compliment each location. Xenoblade 2 has my favorite environments in the trilogy. I tend to get bored of side quests that are fetch quests, but the ones in the third game were of really high quality and well designed. If you liked doing the ones in the Definitive Edition, I’m sure you’ll love the side questing in Xenoblade 3 if you end up trying it some day!

the xeno series is probably my favorite jrpg franchise of all the ones i have played.
the characters just feel very human compared to a lot of other jrpgs i have played.
as for rpgs that i can recommend that are also a bit more niche or just don't get recommended that often.
-pandoras tower(wii) is an action rpg with an otome twist in it's gameplay and it's one of the operation rainfall games that xenoblade was part of back in the day.
-parasite eve(ps1) a fusion of survival horror and jrpg developed by square that got a pure suvival horror sequel. the first games is simply amazing.
-lisa the painful rpg(pc) a western made sidescroller jrpg that is brutal in it's difficulty as well as heart warming and funny.
-the yakuza/like a dragon games they a fairly popular but not really talked about in the rpg circles. most games use an action combat beat em up system but there are also some turn based games. you can start the series with either yakuza 0 or 7(since it has a new protag with his own journey at that point)
-elona+(pc) this in all honesty is one of the best games i have every played and yet most people will probably bounce right off it within the first 20 minutes of the game. it doesn't explain controls to you or mechanics. it's pure trial by error. the story is nothing all that special. some evil necromancer wants to rule the world. yet it is simply amazing! right from the get go it is made clear that the world is not made for you and exists on it's own. npc will sometimes just handle quests on their own. towns will sometimes have horrible events happen because some guy did a dumb thing like picking up a sword that has the chance to start the apocalypse with each swing. it is a game of absolute freedom. you could fight the dragon by getting a high enough lv and slaying it with your party...or you get as MUCH alcohol as you can carry and start throwing it in his mouth until he is to drunk to move and just beat him up with your bare fists. can't get into a treasure room because of some hard to crack lock? just smash in the door or turn the wall next to it into another door with your transmog spells.
hell if you want you could just turn it into fantasy pokemon. bringing a monsters health low enough allows you to catch it via a monster ball and from that point on deploy it as an extra party member. i could literaly talk for hours about adventures in this game. the things written here are not even the weirdest stuff.
-fear and hunger 2(pc) is another game i can highly recommend. it is difficult as hell, but has some amazing characters and super fun game mechanics.
it's a finish jrpg with a limb-based, turn-based combat system. you play one of 13 people that got stranded in the town of prehavail. there you are forced by the moon god to take part in a battle royal. not only among the other 13 outsiders that ended up there but also all the insane townspeople. it just like elona allows for a lot of freedom in the way you handle situations.

Oh, you live in Portugal? I thought you were either in USA or in Canada).
Glad you enjoyed Fire Emblem. I've recently played Fire Emblem Fates, almost finished the Revelations route. I also played Fire Emblem Awakening some years ago and before that Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon and Fire Emblem The Sacred Stones.
I do own Three Houses, Engage and Echoes, just haven't played any of them.
There's a rumor that Nintendo remade Fire Emblem 4. Hopefully, it's true and they'll announce it in a few months.
By the way, I just finished Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana yesterday. What a game! The ending was really heartfelt and even though the way they ended the whole story isn't really my cup of tea, the way they treated the characters' story is pretty great and wholesome.

Always gets a shake of my head when people say something has a special place in their heart. I'm like oh? Where is that? By the left ventricle? People should be saying it has a special place in my mind! The heart only pumps blood, it does nothing else. Love is not from the heart, passion, fondness so on. The heart only circulates blood, nothing else.

I am Gen X as well and have loved games since the first 8-bit Nintendo came out.
I retired last year so now I have more time to put into my gaming.
My first jrpg faves were Dragon Warrior, FF I, Phantasy Star I-IV, FF IV VI and VII and Chrono Trigger.
Shin Megami Tensei V on the Switch and Yakuza:Like a Dragon on Xbox are my current favorites.
    Awesome games.
I highly recommend you try out Fire Emblem Fates on the Nintendo 3DS.
It involves two different factions you can side with( in Conquest you side with a European gothic knight kingdom, and in Birthright you side with the feudal asia kingdom, there is also an option to download Revelations, which lets you form your own side with choice members from the other factions).
This series allows you to marry your army characters and later on recruit their offspring who inherit skills from their parents.
As much as I love Three Houses and Engage, I miss the marriage system.
Breeding super soldiers was a lot of fun in Awakenings(precursor to Fates) and Fates.

Fire Emblem Engage was such a disappointment after the masterpiece that was Three Houses. I can't think of ANYTHING good about Engage. The story was horrible, wasn't till the last 4 missions where the story actually did anything. The characters were awful, the art style of the game was like a stupid v-tuber. Maybe the combat in Engage was good you could say, but that is not enough to hold up the entire game. The soundtrack was forgettable. I can't give Engage more then a 5/10, and that's being generous. Three Houses gets an 11/10 though.

    • @aarongutierrez7705
      @aarongutierrez7705 4 місяці тому

The story was 0.25x as good as three houses, I didn’t mind the hub world. The character models looking Vtubers, gotta agree *for cutscenes*
However, once ur in a map playing the battles, the animations, mechanics, and gameplay (ring system) is just so peak.
I sit at 7/10. The story is garbanzo beans and the VA for evil protagonist is atrocious

Story was served for utilitarian purposes. But the visual polish and the gameplay was incredible. Play it in Maddening mode to really appreciate all the mechanics the devs placed in for the game.
