This channel is refreshing. I always thought UA-cam was a young person's occupation, but being born in the 80s, it's a fresh perspective to watch this channel as it aligns more with my perspective of games. Informative, a bit inspirational, and just overall a very great gaming channel!

That’s how I’m approaching FFVII Rebirth right now. I will cycle the weekly warzone session with the boys but my main focus is Rebirth and I’m 90 hrs in taking my time. I barely made it to cosmo canyon but I’m backtracking on side quests. I don’t understand how ppl just brute force thru a game just to beat it so fast. I let it marinate.

Hello! My name is Drake and I have completionism! I used to be a huge "grazer" but lately I've settled on playing only 1-2 games max, to completion. It was extremely liberating when I came to the epiphany that it is literally impossible to finish every game in my backlog, almost like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders. Making a list of games you want to prioritize in your backlog helps keep you on track as well. Really makes you feel good when you visit the list months later and see how many games you've checked off.

Interesting subject. I used to be a completionist in my younger days. Starting a family in my 30 used up most of the gaming time. Now I will complete only games that are a core enjoyment. Zelda one excellent example: I will saver TotK for a year, not having the rush and the time I used to. I want to complete everything before mastering the final Boss.
Nice tune and nice sweater :)

Some friends tell me that focusing on one game alone shows my "addictive personality", and my answer remains.
Why embark on a journey and not try to relish all the opportunities it provides, it's like traveling in the window seat with your eyes closed or travel back without leaving the station or seing the sites? By the way, alone or with friends, Planet Crafter is a wonderful experience, maybe not for you if you're not into crafting survival games but the sense of evolution while one terraforms the planet can be seen throughout the game and all around the map. Pleasantly fulfilling.

I typically play a handful of games concurrently, giving each a turn and then moving on to the next. I keep a game in my 'lineup' until I complete it. As far as being a completionist, I strive for 100% until doing so becomes frustrating to the point that it's no longer fun. Then it's time to stop. Great point at the end about playing a game on your own terms and own timeline. I just got my PS4 about a year ago, mainly because up until then I was still working my way through my PS3 backlog.

I am and always was a completionist, but it's something that kills the enjoyment about everything in my life. It's part of me being a perfectionist. So playing games without aiming to min-max build or complete/collect everything, just focusing on a story, is a good exercise for me to fight with my flaw.

I'm generally not a completionist unless the game is AAA, the quality/detail is exceptionally high, the gameplay is well-refined, & the game is relatively easy to drop into & continue to make real progress after a moderate hiatus. For example, I would consider myself an Elden Ring completionist--& for Elden Ring, I have another ~15 titles w 0% chance I will sit down to intentionally complete.
A much less critically acclaimed game that fit the bill for me was Farcry: Primal -- it's one of few games I have a Platinum trophy for on PSN; a lot of people would disagree w how great the game is, but the effort put into that game in terms of research into linguistics, pre-historic contact between hominid species leading to homo sapiens' ultimate survival...it's an investment in games you don't usually see. Plus, the Dunia engine by the time it was released was near perfect.
Others, I would include: Romance of the Three Kingdoms VII for PS2; Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec; Absolver (albeit, a AA game, but the best fighting game ever made...nothing comes close, esp. when online PvP was still alive); etc. But, I do have a fair size library of games too, many that I won't likely play ever again; for some reason, every once in a while, a game just hits for me...(?) Also, games as a service -- I admit, I played Forrtnite for quite some time.
AND, as for multi-tasking, I am aware of the research, but I must be some sort of outlier because if I'm not doing multiple things at once, a singular task will drag to a severe halt for me. This isn't the usual multitasking I engage in, but I recall a ~30m commute time one-way back in college. I would drive my 6 spd manual while reading through a cram sheet for an exam I'd be taking on arrival at my first class in one hand, whilst holding a textbook in my other hand for quick reference, whilst listening to some lecture series or music on my ipod, all while navigating Interstate traffic & severely exceeding the speed limit. & I would ace my exams, listen to some neat facts or cool tunes, & I would always arrive right on time -- never once pulled over, never once an accident, just me multi-tasking with optimal results. & That's 100% true; in fact, I made the drive daily, but I would venture into the extreme like that 1-2x per month for ~3 years! lol!

I'm a collector. I get every good game I want to try for every platform, and play the game briefly and never finish most games. I have 3 kids, a job, involved in athletics, no time, but I'd love to experience it all if I had time. As an 80s kid, we'd get a handful of quality games per year. These days way too many games to play em all. Clayton, I highly recommend you try UEVR unreal modded games. Sackboy in VR is incredible.

I got to admit I always been a completionist myself .
I tried playing 2-3 games at once before and its not for me .
I noticed once I start a game get to a certain point and play other games I would tottaly forget some the story line or some of the size quest or objectives of the other games .
It practically ruined the entire experience.
People who play like 2-3 games at once i find out are terrible gamers, they play one game , get stuck in one area , frustrated then pop in another game tell they figuare it out later .
The grind and pushing through the difficult parts of a game is what makes it all more worth the while.

I think I am in the completionist team because I always have to start from the start of a series or talk to everybody in a rpg to understand everything. I have to say it's true about the burden of not getting things finished because I get some mild anxiety thinking about all those games or projects that are half way done. A couple of years ago that burden made me settle the score for Ghosts and Goblins, Castlevania 3 and Double Dragon 3, some of the most difficult NES games from my childhood, yet I still have to beat Battletoads.

This video made me think. In recent years, unless a game REALLY grabs me with story/character development, I tend to keep a few games going in tandem (usually one on each of my main systems). I can step away from a game and come back to it days, weeks, or months later and that doesn't bother me at all. However, there are some titles that do really suck me in and that happens I do go into a sort of completionist mode because I want to see how the story turns out and what happens to the characters I am falling in love with. I recently clocked 150 hours to complete Persona 5 Royal after picking it up again at the 50 or so hour mark. It just sucked me in. So did the Xenoblade Chronicles Games. The Witcher 3 has done that for me on multiple 100 hour plus playthroughs. And most recently, I am completely at the mercy of Final Fantasy 16. The beauty of gaming is that each person can enjoy it based on what works for them, but your comments regarding the energy spent juggling multiple unfinished things does give me a lot of food for thought.

  • @thenonexistinghero

I used to complete a lot of games, but now I rarely do. In modern games it usually either takes too long or is too much of a hassle to get 100%. That doesn't meant I just finish games though, I tend to play them until I'm satisfied or tire of them enough to stop. And every once in a while I return to replay games I really enjoyed, even if I've never fully completed them. And it's not unusual for me to 'mostly' complete a game. For Breath of the Wild I pretty much did everything other than collect all of the Korok seeds (but I still collected like half of them to max out inventory capacity for all types).
Cool about that psychological effect btw. I know a lot about psychology, but never heard of that term (well, it's a broad field after all). But I am all too familiar with that effect. I tend to limit the amount of games I play at once, but... I can't always manage to do that.
Also nice Ys song in the backround.

Heads up everyone. He's not the old completionist. He's the NEW completionist.
I've learned that many games require tim einvestment to really get hooked. Often it's like a book. Some don't really grab you until 70% in, but when it does it was so worth it. Others hook immediately and hold you the entire time. Bloodborne was a happy accident like that for me. Had no intention of playing it, as I knew nothing about it. Gave it a chance since everyone I knew were picking it up. Became my game of the year and played it close to 1500-2000 hours.

I'm the type who will actively play a few games at a time and have come back to finish/platinum several games a year or more after starting them. Typically, I hyper focus on one game for a week or two but if I haven't finished, I start to stray more. I like most genres of videogames and unless the game itself drastically changes the way it plays, I start to find it monotonous.
I'm the same with TV. I typically can't handle bingeing more than like 4 hours of something and usually want to take a break before I continue. I've watched a movie marathon a few times but it was probably with someone else and/or more of a challenge than an organic thing I did because I was enjoying it.

I started gaming relatively late in life. I did landscape design and installation. Small scale operation where if we needed a pond, we would hire that talent separately. Enter Woody the pond guy. This is how I was introduced to gaming.
As we worked on the project, he was going on and on about this new game he was into. I eventually became curious and was treated to a demo during a dinner party hosted by him and his wife, during the Super Bowl.
Well, it was hard using the controls alone, having virtually no experience with a PC or gaming. Like learning to play the piano, physically. But I was fascinated by the world I had entered. To me, I was on the holodeck of the starship Enterprise.
He gifted me with a copy of that game at the end of the project. This is how Woody and "Oblivion" took me into the world of gaming.
It's where I build and explore on my own holodeck. I never understood when people would say they "beat the game" , were finished, and on to the next one. Maybe it's because of Oblivion's sandbox style that I play the way I do. And that I'm old. Lol. But that's my approach to gaming. I will play in one world seemingly forever before moving on to the next one.
ETA: I deliberately avoid and postpone completing the main quest in order to make the experience last longer.

I feel you here Clayton. I am similar because a) my personality leans toward it 🤣 and b) here in New Zealand, for a new release game, you pay premium $. Therefore I might as well get the most of it. For example, I just purchased Stellar Blade ($140 NZD) so I will be enjoying that after Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. The way a look at a game is if I get about $1 to $2 per hour of playtime out of the main game (excluding things like "New Game +" then I have got perceieved value from it. The other enriching part of a good game where you "completionist" it is that you find good story bits, weird side missions, or end up with great loot/equipment you otherwise would have missed.

I'm mostly there, but I do have one opposite revelation where some games are better to visit now and again rather than get burned out and bored on the same thing, particularly open world games that can get repetitive.
Halo Infinite is a great example. If I play that for too long at a time it feels repetitive. When I think, "I feel like playing some Halo," it's GREAT, grade-AAA Halo experience. Others like that are Forza Horizon 4, Ghost of Tsushima, and more. I don't think I'd have nearly as much fun if I played those non-stop to the end.
Otherwise, I get what you're saying totally. A lot of the longer epics are best experienced without getting sidetracked too, like a lot of my favorite JRPGs. One of my favorite JRPGs, "The Last Story" tremendously respects your time and gives you such a varied -- yet cohesive -- and meaningful experience with its conservative content that that can absolutely hold your attention.

I'm new to JRPGs at the age of 45. I've never really played games to the end (apart from Advanced Wars), but since starting out on my JRPG journey I like to obviously complete each game, not playing any other game until I complete them. Especially love playing along with a guide to maximize my efficiency playing through the games. Currently my journey has been....Dragon Quest/Warrior 1 on the SNES, Final Fantasy English Translation on the 3DS with mod for Pixel Remaster soundtrack (the most amazing experience ever), then Tactics Ogre on the GBA (amazing game that doesn't get enough love), then into Dragon Warrior 3 on the GBC (on the Analog Pocket). Now I'm onto Vandal Hearts on the PS1. After that I need to decide on where to go next. The short list is Live-A-Live on the Switch. Chrono-Trigger (many options for version), Octopath Traveler, Shining Force on the GBA, Final Fantasy Tactics on the PSP, the actual full version of Tactics Ogre (probably the PSP version).......the list goes on!!

Have you ever 100% any game since the PS3 Era started? (PC or Console) Out of 300 games on Steam, I have completed 2 with a 3rd at about 99%.
I also have over 2000 hours in FO76... (I lived through all the horror that is Bugthesda 😂) I tried to reinstall the game a couple of times, and got hives and nauseated.
I think we would find that many completionists are hard working people with skills that are needed but not appreciated, with our new throw away society. I grew up furniture and cabinet making. Served in the military.
In my mind, completing a game is not from a place of Dominance but a Finality of Conquest. (Long Live the Returning Heros)
That being said, I also see that Lots of Video Games have a Communist approach in them. (Hear me out.) You work long hours, just to be rewarded with more work. Nothing in the game improves your real life. You fight with others, online, for respect of that community, and are willing to violently END your opposition. You pay the developers for this privilege and pay them again for any more developments. WE ADOPT A WORLD VIEW OF LIFE THROUGH THIER HYPOTHETICAL IDEOLOGY. (Ever say to someone "War never changes"? Say a line from a game to a coworker, knowing they wont understand?)
Welcome aboard Comrade - Grind Away
😂 OK, got a little dark in here. Let me set my tinfoil hat on it's hook.

Great video Clayton. As I look at the mess on my desk and the wife's TO-DO list on the pegboard, I realize that I too am a completionist when it comes to video games. I have tried playing as little as two games at once, and I have found that I have a hard time getting back to one of the games. I started Witcher 3 recently but felt compelled to make it my second game to play due to it length. Since then, I have completed two other games, Mafia 2 and Wolfenstein New Order. During all my play time on those two games, I maybe went back to the Witcher 3 for perhaps 1-2 hours. My lack of completionist in my personal space and chores is something that I desperately need to focus on because you are correct when you say that completing a task and checking it off the list is such a sense of fulfillment. Love the content!

Thanks Clayton! I swap between one game, and then comfort games. For example, I'm new to Souls-likes so I'm focused on Dark Souls Remastered, but then I'll comfort myself with Lies of P which is a much easier and modern souls-like. I don't recommend souls-likes as completionist games, b/c they are known for New Game +, and this isn't for the feint of heart or getting thru backlogs .

I know I am part of a very small group of people who don't like the two latest Zelda games. I mean, they are serviceable games no doubt. I also think they are validly good games to those who like them so I am not harping on people for liking either. Saying all that so I don't get to much hate.
Its just for me, I miss the old games. The Switch Zelda's just aren't the same for me and I really hope eventually we get a more traditional Zelda again though money talks and why would they change it now.
On topic though, I am a completionist when I like the game to be sure. I will try to do and see everything the game has to offer. However, my backlog is so gigantic even some of the ones I thoroughly enjoy I just try to finish them these days so I can get to another game. At 44 years old I now realize I will never get through my backlog so I have been making sure to prioritize the bangers and not fussing to much about being so thorough anymore.

I've been playing two games at once for awhile now. I play one on my switch which I can play portable and most importantly, in bed, and then one on the TV in the living room which I usually only get the chance to do once or twice on the weekends. I typically try to make sure these games are different genres as well, so you won't catch me playing two RPG's simultaneously, for instance.

I try different games at a time and when I find one that I really like, l‘ll play it exclusively up to the end. I‘m sort of a completionist. That means I usually do all missions and side quests, and try to explore the whole map, but I‘m not compulsive enough to grab every single treasure chest or hunt for all 1000 Koroks, or other collectibles. 😅 I also buy the DLCs if available. And I like to collect some merchandise, or costumes. (I‘ve got about 10 different of Link‘s outfits. And all the Zelda books and manga. 😊)

  • @joesackbaron

I go all in until I lose interest. There is usually a point where I feel it suddenly gets overly repepetitive in modern games, as they are just too big and bloated with repetition rather than fresh experiences or challenges. At that point I feel it's completed in my mind as the mechanics of the game have nothing else to offer. My interest just switches off when the time investment required to carry on becomes far greater than the reward. Maybe it's just my adult awareness of Sunk Cost fallacy kicking in? When I was a kid I was hard core compulsive to the bitter end 😂- as you said, you'd close your eyes to go sleep and the game would still be playing in your head. It's wierd because those games were all full of repetition, but they were much shorter, much harder, and gave a huge sense of reward (or is that relief?) when finally beaten. The last game I actually played all the way through was Robocop Rogue City because the concept and film was of special significance to me, so it was a delight to be able to be immersed in that world from the late 80's; it wasn't too long either which I prefer.

I was never a completionist unless it was Ninja Gaiden/2 on the orginal Xbox those games just pissed me off. Also too many awesome games (Read book: 1001 Games to Play Before You Die) to try in one lifetime don't have time for generic sidequests/collectables/high scores.
