The best way to remove carbon is the Simple Green household cleaner. I just soak my pistons for a day in it and use a toothbrush to clean out the ring grooves. The pistons look like brand new. I built my daughter’s Mini Cooper engine that used a quart of oil every 400 miles and it was full of carbon. Some of the exhaust ports were nearly completely plugged. The head soaked for about two days with cleaning here and there and looked like a brand new head afterwards.
Angle torque wrench is worth the money in the time saved bought my Snap On when they came out works great just mark the bolts so you know the ones that have been torqued already Also the torque wrench tells you torque at the angle so you can compare and know numbers are consultant
He took all the rings straight out of the box and put them on the piston and installed them in the block without checking the cap. Thats a NOGO ! THERE will be different cap sizes on the size thats needed
what exactly do you think we are building? this is a stock engine, stock bore, stock rings for an almost 80 year old man. before you criticize others lets see you actually finish your "1000 hp ls" engine and put it on the dyno.
@j.c.smithprojects thanks for the comment. I do ! I built 4 to 5 motors a week all LS based from cabs to supercharged to turbos to nitrous. 3 just last week where alcohol/ nitro mixed motors. Actually built one last month that ran on windshield fluid kinda cool
I used the Cloyes timing kit on a 3 Valve and ended up having to redo the timing job like 20,000 miles later. I replaced it with a Melling kit and that was what was on the truck when I traded it. The guides that came in the Melling kit had Ford part numbers molded into them so I think at least the guides were OEM. On another note, I tried to use a Melling crank sprocket on a 2014 LV3 Silverado, and it just plain wouldn't fit on the crank. I had to reuse the original crank sprocket.
I've built several small blocks and inline six but nothing for 25 years but no LS engines . I always used STP in a heavy duty ketchup dispenser for assembly lube . This is valuable info as I currently own a 190000 mile 6 liter, thanks can't wait to hear it run .
👍👌👏 2) Oh WOW, just look at that! Another type of those special sweatshirts with the ventilation louvers! How many do you actually own? Were they hard to get? 😁 ;-) 😝👅😇😘 2) Please kindly allow me to ask: Have you checked the piston ring gaps? Best regards, luck and especially health to all 3 of you.
@@j.c.smithprojects I already thought so because out of my long term experience you are very, very thorough. And because I'm thorough too, I simply couldn't resist to ask. Thanks for replying and for the heart. Sincerely yours.
i bought a cloyes timing set for the fe in my 65 galaxie, because it was made in usa apparently, my chain also felt very loose and just bad, the chain had china marked on it. so i don't know if they are outsourcing it or just boxing it in the us.
Was your ringtone the "Sanford and Son" intro?? 😂😂❤
Break an old ring in half and use the square end to scrape the carbon out of grooves
hello j.c. & mrs. smith & it's is randy and i like yours video is cool thanks j.c. & mrs.smith friends randy
I have found that a broken ring pushed around the grooves works well to clean them !!

Everything looks good looking forward to seeing the next video.
Great video J.C.Smith really enjoy watching you assemble this LS engine. It's coming along nicely thanks for sharing stay safe Mr & Mrs J.C.Smith.
Ring with silver edge being moly or chrome goes to the top. Thats your compression ring
Looking good J.C
Good job!

I’m kind of surprised you don’t have the snap on digital angle torque wrench.

No locktight on the rod caps
If it was necessary, gm would have used it from the factory
Did you oil the wrist pins?

Great vid ! Did you reuse the connecting rod bolts ?
i think i did. i dont remember buying new ones.
No filing of rings
if it was necessary for this engine build, i would have done it. it isnt.
