I have seen Mark live with his own band and I've tried to watch every interview with him that was ever posted and I can tell you that he is a beautiful soul and his spirit is intact. Anyone that has him as a friend is extremely lucky. Thank you Mark F for giving us your love and abundant talent throughout the years and a big thank you to John B for doing these interviews with Mark!
Mark comes off as being a real, genuine, down to earth kind of guy - a rare combination of humility [lack of pretentiousness], humor, immense talent and… well… graciousness. What a refreshing thing to experience. Thanks for everything you’ve added to my life’s experiences, Mark! 🙌🏻
As a young teenager, I discovered Grand Funk Railroad. I was one of their biggest fans. I had most of their albums. When I heard Mark Farner became a Christian, I was so excited; being a Christian myself. He seems to be such a nice guy. Glad to know he's still out there and doing well.
Very humble interview by Mark Farner. I was fortunate to see his solo tour back 89 and in 99 seeing the reunion of Grand Funk. It's a shame how the way Don and Mel roared Mark. Mark Farner is Grand Funk Railroad period!! Thanks for the nice interview. Well done 👍
NEEDS TO HAPPEN BECAUSE THERE ARE SO MANY YOUNG MUSIC REACTORS THAT ARE SO IMPRESSED BY GFR'S MUSIC VIDEOS!!! I, MYSELF, HAVE WATCHED THEIR REACTIONS! I'M OLD SCHOOL, AND A REUNION NEEDS TO HAPPEN! SO MANY OF US FANS WOULD LOVE IT!!!
Mark opened up for Blue Oyster Cult a couple years back in St. Augustine Florida. Mark did an whole concert set and blew the stage apart. Sweet hearing the GFR set from the original. BOC was great too.
Mark Farner what a pleasure to see and hear you. To me you sound just like way back then I saw you a few times and you blew me away in the gfr concerts I got to see. I still follow you because to me you were the part of the band that led it all together. Bless you man.
Mark is one of the guitarists out there when I was growing up and learning to play. I thank him for making it easier for a lefty to play right-handed. I was struggling like every other kid, who didn't spend 23 hours a day practicing, did. One day, I picked up a friend's guitar that was strung right-handed. I started playing the chords with my left hand that I learned to play with my right hand. I found it was easier to change chords with my left hand. I never looked back. I've been playing right-handed for 55 years. The song I played to was "Heartbreaker", by Grand Funk. Thank you Mark! I tell right-handed kids to string it left-handed and play that way.
Absolutely love Mark! Grew up in Saginaw and he grew up in Flint about 25 miles south! He now lives in Harbor Springs about 10 miles north of me in Petoskey! I see him every once in a while! Great guy!
I've been to the so called Grand Funk concert and a Mark Farner concert and Mark Farner is the one to go to. With The so called Grand Funk you might as well go to a bar and watch a local band play Grand Funk Songs. It's the same thing.
The original GFR back in the day were great! Mark seems like such a good person - he doesn't reek of bitterness or resentment even tho he was ripped off .
Love my hometown hero Mark. Just to jump in with this. There are many times when a manager or handler will tell the person conducting the interview "don't bring up" such and such or don't ask this or that. It happened to me when I was in radio.
Farner holds all the cards. He has the songs, the voice and the guitar...he doesn't need them. And they don't even realize they're making fools of themselves with sad imitators.
The three of them are awesome musicians. But, Farner is one of the most important reason because I meet GFR. When I was young I was so impress for the skills of this guy to play the keyboards with the guitar ready to play on many songs. I’m enjoyed ( and still are) the music of this amazing band.
Recently watching these Mark Farner videos. So sad about the other two guys won't bring Mark back into the fold. Such great chemistry these three guys had together. Hopefully someday...
I saw the three of them on their final tour.. they were amazing... then I saw the new GF with othe guys singing Marks songs.. I walked out after 4 or 5 songs wish the three would get back
Mark......as a long-time fan of GFR (from the very beginning), all I can say about Don & Mel is that they should be ashamed, VERY ashamed of themselves. Never have I seen such ignorance & injustice visited upon another band member, especially someone like YOU, who was, without a doubt, the driving force of what was once the hottest act of its time on so many levels. It is so obvious to all the REA:L GFR fans that without you, there would be no Grand Funk. Granted, Don & Mel were/are great players, but as we all know, it takes more than musicianship to make a band great, & you were what made them great.......your songs, your voice & your unprecedented stage presence were what made GFR a legend that will live in our hearts for all of our lives. God bless you, man, for all you have given us ;~)
I really enjoyed this thx so much for sharing. I am a huge fan of Mark Farner, he was my first guitar hero late 60's .. I know he is a Christian and it shows when his face lights up talking about giving.
I saw the original Grand Funk trio at Atlanta Stadium as a kid in the early 70's. You couldn't pay me to watch that bunch that's touring now. Thery were on the bill with a band here with a band that I really wanted to see but I just didn't want to sit through it. I'd honestly rather see Mark Farner's American Band. Grand Funk would not have had ten consecutive platinum albums without Mark.
Mark I was at Shea Stadium, can you imagine if you weren't there and they put someone else in it would be no Grand Funk Railroad. I would love to see you go out on your own and do some of the old songs and record some of the new ones that you probably have and I know you do. Stay blessed!
I believe he wrote 92% of their material . He is ONLY looking for 1/3 for a reunion . WHO is not being fair ? He was most of GFRR . The other two were good . But just think about this for a second . I just saw him on Long Island . Great show !
Just checked out 'Farner Chords' and appreciate Mark doing this. There was a BTO song that I always liked but wasn't sure how to play. Randy Bachman has a YT video that shows the chords/fingerings. Voila, I can play the song!
Every great rock guitarist I've ever heard of says everyone gets their riffs wrong, Ritchie Blackmore, for example, says everyone gets "Smoke on the Water" wrong--including Tommy Bolin! I would especially love to hear the proper way to do the riffs on "Into The Sun". That is the most unique set of riffs I have ever heard Mark play--a very good combination of rhythm and melody!
Tommy Bolin was given creative latitude to reinterpret. Two things fueled his drug fire. First, Purple management renigged on stylish reinterpretations. Second, Teaser was garnering rave reviews and was selling. This and having money made Bolin fo crazy. We would probably have him if Purple never came calling. Blackmore even talks up Tommy in private conversation.
I wish they would settle their differences and do a one off like Cram and Led Zeppelin did. Film it. Offer it to their fans on Blu-Ray... and I'd be really happy. Been dreaming of a Grand Funk reunion for a long time.
I've never heard anything but good with Mark Farner,I was in my teenage yrs when they were hott, its a damn shame what's been done to Mark, what Mark saying 33% is the least he should have,he pretty much was one of the best in his day,he could do it all I swear,I wish Don would come to his senses before it's to late,MARK DESERVES BETTER NOW!!
He is a great guy, a huge talent. They screwed him over so bad I doubt thy would ever get back together. He is GFRR! Without him in it calling the band that name is a fraud
Just speculation about the fallout between Mark, and Don/Mel. Perhaps it goes back to Mark’s foray into for lack of a better phrase, religious music. I think that may have been a 90’s thing, and recall they did have a reunion for several years in the mid-90s. Perhaps that created some issues between them later on that decade. You probably know more. Also, like many bands, those other than Don/Mel in the current GFR have now been in the group longer than Mark. BTW Don went to my H/S, the others from my hometown. While I haven’t seen Mark as a solo artist, I have seen every other incarnation of the bands they have been in going back to the mid-60s. GFR, what a band both with and without Craig Frost. Phenomenal live, and Mark is one of the best singers and frontman, in rock history.
you are wasting your time here, John. These people are obsessed with a reunion, but 2/3 of the band simply isn't interested as they'd rather play with guys they actually like.Farner talks a good game, but I've interviewed him and caught him stretching the truth if not outright lying.
Mark wrote most of the songs, plays lead guitar, lead vocals, and keyboards before Frost. He is truly an honest, humble person. Without Mark Farner, there is no GFR. Don and Mel are a tribute GFR band. Don learned well from Terry Knight.
If I could meet Mark in real life I would simply ask him to sing "Some kind of wonderful" or "Inside looking out" and my life would be complete. Or just a simply light conversation This or ride a wheelie on a dirt bike Mark! Mark we love you!
I am well past wanting a reunion of Grand Funk Railroad. It doesn't need to happen, we all have the albums. The feather in Mark Farner's cap iis it took three people to replace him in GFR. And they haven't recorded a note of new music since Farner has been out of the band. They just sing and play the songs that Farner wrote without him. Why do I want to pay money to see that? Nostalgia can only last for so long. Truth is Mark Farner can support a solo career, he was the frontman and voice of GFR. Mel and Don were the rhythm section. They would have to join another act to be successful. They might have had something with Flint, but just didn't work out. The next best thing was to reform with Mark and build the name back up and then , do what they did and toss him out. After that it's just a matter of carrying on with the name without him.
The greatest American Band of all time. Those 3 together were magical !! Maybe they can get it together to do one last tour. It would be a monster. Us old farts would love it. I know a ton of young farts would love to see it too!!’
Mark Farner is a patriot. I met him years ago in Detroit he did the Guitar Army show. Curious why never any mention of Craig Frost when talking reunion or teaming with Mark.
Don't bow down to those backstabbers Mark! After what they did it would be a bigger dishonor to you. They don't deserve to share the same stage with Mark. Ever.
Saw them back in the 70's a couple times. They were great. Saw them about 7 yrs. ago. Where's Mark. They introduced everyone in the band except the guitar player/ vocalist, I guess hoping no one would notice it wasn't Mark.
I remember it said grand funk playing tonight in Muncie Indiana I said wow I’m gonna go see them .well it was just the old drummer and some other wanna bees. It was not grand funk I was extremely disappointed. I left after around twenty minutes. Sad times. Oh well keep on rocking Mark your number one fan Robert Harden 3
I have not seen the whole of this interview or know of other issues the members of the band have with each but according to Mark's book about Grand Funk Railroad cited by Wikipedia one of the reasons Mark has not rejoined the band is because of money Says Wikipedia " after a two-year hiatus, when Brewer and Schacher once again approached Farner about reuniting, he turned them down after they refused to honor his desire to be paid fifty percent, rather than a third of the group's revenue as in the past. He explained his reason in his autobiography, From Grand Funk to Grace: "I do a hell of a lot more work on stage. I wrote the vast majority of the songs. During the 1990s, I committed to two years with Grand Funk. That first year we only did 14 dates. I ended up putting in three years. That was my mistake. I wasn't going to lose money again. At the time, each of us individually owned the Grand Funk trademark. In 1998 Don Brewer suggested we form a corporation to limit our liability as individuals on the road and I agreed. Unfortunately this meant that two thirds of the corporation is the majority". Apparently issues about income from the band seem to take a center stage for Mark and he has a right to make them important. All I can see is whatever friction in the band has hurt the band and the fans who love Grank Funk Railroad .. I encourage Mark and the band members to go into mediation and counselling and to pray together and find a solution to the issues that divide them.. A Grand Funk Reunion and new album and tour would be a awesome and totally miraculous!
From what I've gleaned from all of this is Don is an egotistic and likes control. Mel goes along for the ride. Mark seems potentially cooperative but I don't think Don will EVER allow a reunion. Meanwhile, these guys are getting older than dirt and won't be able to reunite at all soon. Too bad. "What might have been." Gotta say, I met Mark and his wife in Ridgefield CT. after a show. Swell guy, for sure. His wife, very protective of him so he's not spread too thin. But she was okay. Hope I get to see one last show before I kick out. Don't care much about seeing Faux Funk. And that's just a damn shame! P.S. Hey Donnie. Tick, tock. It's kind of now or never. ⏳
I met Mark Farner at The Memphis Italian Fest a few years ago. He was great and nice
Mark is a great musician and man of the Lord. There is no grand funk railroad without him, that’s for sure.
Hey man brother!
Agree!
Mark comes off as being a real, genuine, down to earth kind of guy - a rare combination of humility [lack of pretentiousness], humor, immense talent and… well… graciousness. What a refreshing thing to experience. Thanks for everything you’ve added to my life’s experiences, Mark! 🙌🏻
Mark...is emerging as one of the more based, cool rock legends in the business. Getting even better with time!
Mark is such a nice guy! It's such a shame what Mel and Don did to him!
As a young teenager, I discovered Grand Funk Railroad. I was one of their biggest fans. I had most of their albums. When I heard Mark Farner became a Christian, I was so excited; being a Christian myself. He seems to be such a nice guy. Glad to know he's still out there and doing well.
I have grown to respect the hell outta' Mark Farner. Genuine soul, immense talent.
"Givers never run out of things to give". Great words from Mark.
F them they don’t know a gift horse in the mouth
Very humble interview by Mark Farner. I was fortunate to see his solo tour back 89 and in 99 seeing the reunion of Grand Funk. It's a shame how the way Don and Mel roared Mark. Mark Farner is Grand Funk Railroad period!! Thanks for the nice interview. Well done 👍
Mark is very gracious. HE IS Grand Funk Railroad!
You did a great interview as well, you ask the questions then let Mark reply without a bunch if interruptions,VERY PROFFESIONAL!!
THX ALOT!!
Mark was my guitar hero when I first started playing. Love ya Mark!
Mine too. Still is.
I agree Martha!
Great guy, the both of you
Mark opened up for Blue Oyster Cult a couple years back in St. Augustine Florida. Mark did an whole concert set and blew the stage apart. Sweet hearing the GFR set from the original. BOC was great too.
Mark Farner is what I call an American songwriter in the Townsend/Davies vein!! He is grand funk! Just like John Fogerty is C C R!! Love you Mark!!
One of the greatest bands ever!
Much respect to Mark ❤🎸🫡
Mark Farner what a pleasure to see and hear you. To me you sound just like way back then
I saw you a few times and you blew me away in the gfr concerts I got to see. I still follow you because to me you were the part of the band that led it all together. Bless you man.

Mark's one of my all time favs
Love Mark straight forward

When Mark Farner was in Grand Funk he was 75% of the band ... the other 2 were 25%
I really enjoyed this thx so much for sharing. I am a huge fan of Mark Farner, he was my first guitar hero late 60's .. I know he is a Christian and it shows when his face lights up talking about giving.
Loved your passion , energy, your amazing guitar licks/rifts and song's I do hope you record again on your own even. God Bless !
I saw the original Grand Funk trio at Atlanta Stadium as a kid in the early 70's. You couldn't pay me to watch that bunch that's touring now. From being a long time fan from the beginning what I came to know is Mark is most definitely Some Kind Of Wonderful Best wishes always
God bless you, Mark. I'll check out Farnerchords

Mark didn't sing "SKOW". Don did. You want a reunion, but you Dion't even know who does what. Clown.
Love your show John and love Farner and admire him as a person and fantastic muscian.
Excellent interview as always! Curious if Rick Beato is the guy Mark's referring to at 5:00...
I think he's referring to Chordplay. Beato didn't do "Sins"
From what I hear Mark loves the Lord. That's a good thing for the band.
Grand Funk w/o Mark Farner is even more absurd than Styx w/o Dennis DeYoung. And that’s really saying something!
Mark Farner is one beautiful human being!
To paraphrase. No Farner, No Funk.... Know Farner, Know Funk. 'Nuff said.
Just checked out 'Farner Chords' and appreciate Mark doing this. There was a BTO song that I always liked but wasn't sure how to play. Randy Bachman has a YT video that shows the chords/fingerings. Voila, I can play the song!

He gets it. Life's too short.
Grand Funk aint Grand Funk without Mark
I wish they would settle their differences and do a one off like Cram and Led Zeppelin did.
Film it. Offer it to their fans on Blu-Ray... and I'd be really happy.
Been dreaming of a Grand Funk reunion for a long time.
Cram. You need to trademark that before some thrash band steals it.
Please tour with Fogerty
I have good memory's of Grand Funk playing and with Blood Rock warming them up. But I would like to see them once again.
What a great thing to do, Farners Chords - if my husband was still alive he would be all over that.
AIN'T IT LIKE HIM by THE U.S. APPLE CORPS, 1970, this song would make a great GFR/MARK FARNER song
there is no reason for me to see gfrr without Mark
Wouldn't you wish they'd get back, that would bring me right back to 1971, damn...
Marks right I picked out funk by ear then see mark playing and go oh man I'm in the wrong position! He's absolutely right.
Without Mark Farner, there IS no Grand Funk!
If I was left on an island with one record to play its Grank Funk live.
All members of GFR were great 👍
Don & Mel won’t ask because they know Farner IS GFR. Not them
He is a great guy, a huge talent. They screwed him over so bad I doubt thy would ever get back together. He is GFRR! Without him in it calling the band that name is a fraud

Unfortunate but no one forced Mark to sign his share away. Yes, Brewer supposedly coerced but we are responsible for our actions and signatures.
you are wasting your time here, John. These people are obsessed with a reunion, but 2/3 of the band simply isn't interested as they'd rather play with guys they actually like.Farner talks a good game, but I've interviewed him and caught him stretching the truth if not outright lying.
Mark Farner is Grand Funk Railroad. On Time. Best Album ever
Robert bevington from Grand Blanc Michigan. It would be great to start a reunion tour at Shay stadium
Mark wrote most of the songs, plays lead guitar, lead vocals, and keyboards before Frost. He is truly an honest, humble person. Without Mark Farner, there is no GFR. Don and Mel are a tribute GFR band. Don learned well from Terry Knight.
I won’t go see Don and Mel, even when they appear at the free stage at the local fair.
On the other hand, I’d pay to see Grand Funk Railroad!!!
Comfort Me is one of my top 100 all time favorites
If I could meet Mark in real life I would simply ask him to sing "Some kind of wonderful" or "Inside looking out" and my life would be complete. Or just a simply light conversation This or ride a wheelie on a dirt bike Mark! Mark we love you!
Why is Grand funk not in the Rock and roll Hall of Fame a group with this band are you kidding me
The people who go to Mel and Don's show aren't seeing GFR.
Please give us Mark, Don and Mel again
Don and Mel, let's make it happen.....get behind closed doors, apologize to each other, hug and get to touring....
I am well past wanting a reunion of Grand Funk Railroad. It doesn't need to happen, we all have the albums. The feather in Mark Farner's cap iis it took three people to replace him in GFR.

They should be putting the Rock and roll Hall of Fame right now as we speak you got to be kidding
Never liked them but respect Mark greatly..best of luck
It amazes me that the other two refuse to do this. They're leaving so much money on the table. It's ludicrous.
The greatest American Band of all time. Those 3 together were magical !! Maybe they can get it together to do one last tour. It would be a monster. Us old farts would love it. I know a ton of young farts would love to see it too!!’
The Mel and Don are fools (not to mention crooks). I would go to see Mark Farner perform. I would not pay to see the two jacklegs.
Mark Farner is a patriot. I met him years ago in Detroit he did the Guitar Army show. Curious why never any mention of Craig Frost when talking reunion or teaming with Mark.
Craig was playing with Bob Seger. Mark never wanted him in GFR to start with. Craig retired when Seger stopped playing in 2019.
I'd love to hear why Mark thinks the RR Hall has not inducted GFR,
Don't bow down to those backstabbers Mark!

I’m soon to be 70 yrs old..GRANK FUNK..my all time favorite..NO FARNER…NO FUNK..
The NFL Draft is in Detroit next year. . . That would be a perfect time!!!

Without Mark Farner it's Grand Fake Railroad
what do the other two guys say? Did you inteview them? It's a mistery what happened. And the clock is ticking. We fans are waiting.
Induction in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
We need the original Three and that Recipe!
If live nation offered them a full tour and lots of money they would do it.
ask Mark if the Animals were an influence on the band -::Inside lookin out-etc.

Gotta say, I met Mark and his wife in Ridgefield CT. after a show.
When is the Justin Hayward interview coming?
