Pakistan’s airstrikes in Afghanistan, what's behind the border tensions & the TTP dilemma

  • From 9/11 on, Pakistan tried to secure its flanks by cutting peace deals with terrorist networks, we now call the Tehreek-e-Taliban. That led the TTP to grow to dangerous proportions. Though Pakistan is now bombing TTP targets in Afghanistan, the country is now too economically fragile and politically damaged to wage war on its enemies.

Partition was a result of the anxiety of the Muslim elite losing patronage and power during the British rule that they enjoyed during the Mughal era which led to them believing that they will not be able to get those privileges in Hindu India and the British government's calculation that fuelling religious flames and sowing divisions would weaken the freedom movement and prevent violent backlash from the subjects. Combine all the above with Jinnah's political ambitions which he could not realise with the Congress because of Gandhi and Nehru. The political path to power that Jinnah chose was using religion as a calling card to gain support. He changed his earlier western dressing to a more islamic one, talked mainly in Urdu and reorienting his personality from a politician to a somewhat spiritual leader who would save the community and religion as a whole from the threat of "Hindu supremacy". The British were hand in glove with the Jinnah to create Pakistan to further its imperial and strategic interests. Pakistan was seen as a strategic location which would be forever indebted to the West for its role in its creation. Checkmating India was also on their mind.

Many use aa screen to explain the topic. They also do a very good edition to make the presentation simple. eg using map on scrreen and explaining through the map. Nice summation Mr. Pravin. I usually find your pieces a bit difficult because you begin with some description that is meant as a hook but is actually difficult to make sense of as a listener. This piece was very well laid out.

@@asadraza1666 Bro you are giving apples with oranges type comparative example here which doesn't fully fit in to sum up the overall perspective & context of Taliban rise in Afghanistan.by comparing this one of incidents of religious extemism based operation in karachi you are putting in 2 separate issues which doesn't have any comparative relivence of correlation. Meanwhile If you goes into the depth of the crux of the matter you will find Pakistan military establishment gross miscalculations for the outcome of the rise of Afghan Taliban as such where Pakistan military establishment strategy was to give all sort of overt & convert support to these elements in the AF-PAK region based on the misguided assumptions/presumption that they will used them as an assets of instruments of foreign policy & attained strategic Depth to directly manipulate & Indirectly control afghan Taliban regime to pursue Pakistan strategic intrest & used Afghan Taliban in such a manner where these elements would become an extended arm of the Pakistan military establishment but this move of Pakistan military establishment backfired & today Taliban in Afghanistan has become an eyesore for the Pakistan military establishment & are doing exactly opposite to what Pakistan has thought or envisioned for, And traditionally Pakistan military establishment has it's own long drawn history of strategic miscalculations be it 1965 war miscalculations Or 1971 east Pakistan fiasco,or Strategic alliance with religious extremist bigot groups like Afghan Taliban & others (Which Pakistan establishment nurtured) Or Siachen glacier dispute or 1999 kargil conflict.or Kashmir insurgency along with double game of covert & overt support for Afghan taliban even when Pakistan was an ally of the US in the global war on terror since early 2000s, so all these examples clearly shows that Pakistan military establishment understanding & calculations of Geopolitics has always been worst at best & more often than not always backfired against Pakistan national intrest itself & put the nation at the risk of wars but still Pakistan military establishment has learned nothing from its own past bitter experiences, so if i have been in the helm of the affairs in top commanding position in Pakistani establishment, i never let Afghan Taliban resurgence in Afghanistan even if Pakistan has issues with earlier democratically elected Afghan Govts still i found them more forthcoming cooperative supportive decent & friendlier then present Stubborn religious extremist Afghan taliban regime..

One of the narratives that I heard was the idea of Pakistan was created by Mughal landlords whose power was coming to an end as the British took over India. Majority of the Muslims were fine in India but the landlords who could see they were losing control put this idea out of a separate Muslim nation. Most people of this region have been manipulated using religious ideologies. Unfortunately, a few bad actors made the entire religion look bad only because the educated Muslims didn't push back to the old ideology where violence has become synonymous to the religion. Muslims have to assimilate and take charge of how their religion has to be positioned in the world order and not let bad actors be their representatives.

Pakistan's dubious distinction between good terrorism and bad terrorism has landed them in a security mess. Its strategic miscalculations has furthered their miseries. Governments peace making endeavour with insurgent groups has emboldened them rather than dissuading. Military operations has generated sympathy among Islamists. Poor economic mood and dissatisfaction towards the establishment paves the way for their ideology to gain traction among the disillusioned youth. With the patronage from the Afghan Taliban and deep sanctuaries within its territory Pakistan has fewer options to halt its relentless onslaught.

Basically correct . War is a means of income for multiple wives numerous children types of families amongst less educated afghans and pathans . In 2000s there was suspicion that musharaf , it ally us war contractors had interest in military activities as it was an earner for all . Outside powers seeing this stupidity going on added to the fire . Presently only economic blockade of Afghanistan and tribal areas of Afghanistan can work , that too will take time .rise of Punjabi nationalists in Punjab can have a sobering effect on euphoria of pathan nationalism sweeping kpk and augmenting TTP vigour . Economically kpk is non viable and is dependent on Punjab and Sindh .

That will drown the mainland along with Pakistan. No never for God sake. That's why Advaniji hailed jinnah a nationalist. The brunt of the violent western borders faced by Pakistan is self made but India is saved from it because of the buffer artificial country in between. That's a blessing in disguise to the Indians who suffered for many hundreds of years of foreign invaders, marauders, butchers and vagabonds.
