  • Sherlock Hound was a Japanese-Italian anime that, thanks to the involvement of one Hayao Miyazaki, went from being just another Sherlock Holmes tale to a beautifully animated cult classic. What was the history behind Sherlock Hound? Why did it almost get killed by a lawsuit? And are the episodes without Miyazaki's involvement just as good?

I saw the Arabic dub of this anime when it aired in Egypt in the 90s, this was basically my introduction to anything Sherlockian before I started watching more faithful adaptations. Also, this version of Ms. Hudson was one of my early cartoon crushes as a kid so imagine young me's disappointment when I watched more faithful Sherlock Holmes adaptations. I ended up buying the UK released DVD when I was in the UK for a while, too bad it only had the English dub, which sadly isn't very good.
I'm not surprised this show was a success in Japan, the Japanese love Sherlock Holmes, in fact it's one of the character's biggest markets along with the UK and the US. I do remember there was a previous Anime using the Sherlock Holmes character in the 60s, which also featured Arsene Lupin.

    Joise Lawrence as Mrs. Hudson
Kenny Everett or Graeme Garden as Dr. Moriarty

My sister bought the DVDs of the german dub when they were released in 2016. We watched the series with our parents, and we ALL LOVED IT!! For us, it's mostly heart warming, with funny or exciting moments. Not that they are too little funny and exciting moments, but there is an entirely "mood", "atmosphere" through the whole series: it's nice. And that's the most we observed. But, with it's action scenes, mystery scenes and funny scenes, so with the whole story every episode has, it was exciting to watch it, and even the German Dub got "just" the "Karaoke-Play-Along-Instrumental-Version" of the Opening and the Ending as the german Op and Ed, I love these instrumental versions very much, they are so beautiful to listen to, even today! Whenever I have bad time, both songs are so peaceful, beautiful and exciting to listen to, that they are raise my mood.
And I have no problem that every episode have other focuses each: With that, I think, the anime is well balanced; we have more action focused episodes, some with more mystery focus, some with more character focus and so on. And even if Ms Houndson has not so much to do in the entirely anime, she is although an important character for me, 'cause of the few episodes she had, and the most important one with her past. So even if she is more in the backround after "her episode", you *know* at this point that she is more than just a housekeeper and someone you better make not angry. So you know that she has skills and more. Sure it would be interesting to see more of her in the entirely series, if miyazaki worked on it in the later productions, but I think it's okay like it is. 'Cause it's still an "Sherlock Holmes" show, not a "The Housekeeper of S.H." show. But she *has* her role, an important one, even if she is an emotional support for holmes, watson or their guests (clients) and think that's important as well. (And much better if she is "just there", like characters are in other series/animes sometimes).
So Miyazaki or not, I like the many variations of the various episodes. With that, it's not boring at some point at the series, but every adventure is new and other than the other episode before, so with that, it's exciting ALL the time AND just a nice mood to internalise it every time, especially with the Ending... ^_^

A lot of the episodes are based on original Sherlock Holmes stories; just among examples from the episodes you selected as your best-of, there's A Small Client (The Engineer's Thumb), The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle (the story of the same name), Treasure Under the Sea (The Bruce-Partington Plans), The Crown of Mazarin (The Beryl Coronet), I think The Sacred Cross Sword could be based on The Musgrave Ritual. The anime just uses the original premise as the concept for the story, changes the context a bit (e.g. an actual submarine going missing instead of just the plans for one), and makes Moriarty the culprit every time.
Out of the Miyazaki episodes, A Small Client, probably comes closest to the source material and almost takes a very dark turn; the original story starts with a man who had his thumb lopped off coming into Watson's doctor surgery, and in the Miyazaki episode there's a distressing moment where Moriarty stands over Martha's father with a cleaver as he hangs from the window, Holmes very narrowly stops him from losing his thumb in the exact same manner as the literary character. There are also small references to the book Holmes in Miyazaki's characterization and design; I noticed that Hound-Holmes 'stores' his letters and documents by pinning them to walls and furniture with daggers, something Conan Doyle's character is mentioned doing in one story (though he kept all his nailed to the mantlepiece).

For how much I (and everyone else, for obvious reasons) can love Miyazaki, I must be honest: that man is "limited" by his own style.
As you shown in this video, he is the non plus ultra of animation and effort, but he always recycle his own characters and plots, ignoring the source material.
Even Monkey Punch wasn't happy about how he transformed Lupin into a super kind character and Fujiko into a Kryptonian Rambo (not his words, of course).
If he had directed all of the episodes, we would have ended with a top notch animation, but no mysteries at all and probably Mrs. Hudson would have stole the role of main character, by the end.
