  • Kyoto Video finally ventures into the world of 70s anime with a historical title that came out at the tail end of the decade, The Castle of Cagliostro. While it is remembered more as Hayao Miyazaki's directorial debut, the film itself actually had an influence on animation way before anime like Akira got popular. Was this film with a slightly controversial take on the beloved Lupin III a forerunner to the animation renaissance of the 80s and 90s?

Castle of Cagliostro was my introduction to Lupin the Third without knowing Miyazaki was the Director, and I’m glad it was my intro to this amazing series. Because after seeing the movie, I started watching and reading the Lupin series, and loved every minute and page of it!!

I can't tell you how much I enjoy Castle of Cagliostro as a Lupin fan, given how most hardcore fans don't like this film for how much they changed the established characters, but it's fine with me.

I really loved the ending of this movie, when the princess tells lupin that she wants to go with him and he answer her that he is a bandit always running away and she is a princess and doesn’t deserve that.

I'm not a person who knows much about lupin the third. I heard the name before, but one day I watched this movie. For some reason I got a feeling this was a send off for an era of Lupin. Lupin is a character that's changes over time and this lupin's time was up, so he felt more sincere and was trying to make his last tale that of a heroes end. Not for money, but instead glory.

I saw this at a Dallas comic convention back around 1991 in the room set aside for anime. People would bring their VCR's to tape everyone's bootleg anime. We of course had Akira, Twilight of the Cockroaches, LillyCat, and... "Warriors of the Wind", but seeing Lupin's great characters with the almost Looney Tunes style, over the top action was a revelation.

There was even a fan subtitled version that made the rounds in the 80s - granted - it was white subtitles with no black edging "shadow" - so the words sometimes got lost in the lighter tones sometimes. (And it didn't help that NTH generation copies were even MORE difficult to see and make sense of!) But it was a great first attempt! And it might have been THE first fan subtitle using VCR tech of the time.

Anyone who was into the arcade scene of the early 80's was introduced to Lupin as "Cliff" in the laserdisc video game "Cliff Hanger". There are plenty of videos on UA-cam showing game play and the full game run was about 12 minutes.

The movie wasn't THAT unknown or unseen by 1987. The 1983 Laser disc game "Cliff Hanger" is built out of footage from Caliostro (and a few bits of Mamo). The game was brutally hard, so very few had seen the clock tower bits. But the opening chase would have been recognized by anyone who'd seen the game (and it wasn't all that rare).

I watched this when it had the old English dub with David Hayter as Lupin. Still the quintessential version for me.
The last episode of Teen Titans pays the homage to Castle of Cagliostro when Cyborg's car gets stolen and they have a chase scene with wall climbing. Magnificent!!

My first encounter with 'Castle Of Cogliostro', AND 'Lupin The Third' was from an episode of 'Starcade' where they featured an arcade game called 'Cliff Hanger'. Which basically used 'Castle Of Cogliostro' as the basis for a laserdisc game to cash in on 'Dragon's Lair's success.

I love reliving the parade of Michael Eisner's bad decisions on the Defunctland channel lol. My first exposure to Lupin and Cagliostro was the Cliff Hanger arcade game; 10 year old me would ride my shitty BMX bike for miles to the only arcade that had it (Malibu Castle Park in Redondo Beach CA). Something about it lit my imagination on fire, but I would not Transform into an anime otaku until Robotech debuted several years later in the 80's lol. Memories!

Lupin III season 5 set in France is a masterpiece and it is a tragic conundrum that more people did not watch it. The new character Ami is awesome, and the gang actually return to Cagliostro Castle near the end to hide out. Also, Lupin is forced to evaluate his relationship with Fujiko lol.

So I knew about Lupin before Castle of Cagliostro, I watched character analysis videos of the titular character and saw a few specials of him. It wasn't until I had to do an essay in my local JC on people who influenced Media (radio, movies, etc) and decided to do one on the famous old man himself did I actually learn how involved he was when it came to Lupin. After I turned in my essay I found out that Castle of Cagliostro was on Netflix decided to take a watch and now I'm a legit fan of the series. Might be my favorite Miyazaki movie to be honest.

I love all of Miyazaki's films (still need to get the recently released "Future Boy Conan" series on Blu-ray. Had it on VHS back in the 80s without subtitles and still loved it. Same for this Lupin film.) and "Cagliostro" is at the top of them, next to "Porco Rosso" and the rest. Thanks for making this video since I didn't know much about the Lupin history, more so that Hayao was helping animate the original series. The changes to the characters did not bother me one bit for the final Miyazaki Lupin outing. They just made them all better IMO. Though it isn't by Miyazaki, I highly recommend "Lupin III: The Fuma Conspiracy".

While I enjoy other takes on Lupin III - Miyazaki's very much did seem to me to be the definitive anime version. I agree with this being an older Lupin - seasoned and possibly near the end of his career. Earlier ( and later ) tales of Lupin that portray him closer to Monkey Punch's original are - to me - him in his wild early 20s. While Castle of Cagliostro Lupin seems - in characterization - to be somewhere between 30-35 years old. He's getting by now on a combination of most of his youthful vigor yet tempered with depth and skill he's picked up along the way. ("Beware an older man in a profession when men die young" and "Age and treachery will overcome youth and reflexes" - that sort of thing). Fujiko's lack of displaying her "talents" might be a concession to time passing as well. A girl won't be able to get by on her looks forever! And this Fujiko seems as skilled as Lupin himself - surprisingly so at times! She's still "got it". But no longer seems to DEPEND on "IT" so much.
And thank you for the clips from Batman and the Great Mouse Detective - I had almost forgotten that those other productions had made OBVIOUS reference to Castle C's clock fight!

I kind of want to say that experience really got to him and made him a 'little' softer around women. Not a whole lot, but a little
Still a fun way to get introduced to him. Albeit I wonder if this or the first is a better way. I mean, this is my first Lupin movie, but I didn't really start being a fan until after the First and Jigen's gravestone.

i like the idea of lupin being a straight up hero /sometimes/. castle of cagliostro is very good on its own, but i really love the way it sorr of interacts with the rest of the series. when you consider cagliostro as opposed to, say, legend of the gold of babylon, or some of the randier chapters of the manga, it makes him seem rounded, and especially capricious. he's entireky /capable/ of being the "good guy." but that's not always what sounds the most fun. i think that that's a fun way to treat the character

It seems to have inspired the Jackie Chan movie “Meals on wheels” as well. It’s the same basic plot. complete with castle showdown.

I noticed a few inaccuracies (or perhaps over-simplification) about the early history of Lupin and I'm really happy that you're not pronouncing it as Lu-pen but how does Jigen become Ji-gan? Every time I heard it really took me away from the video. Really fun video though!

It's JiGEN, not JiGAN. Great video anyway!

So someone took the cutscenes from Cliff Hangar and turned them into a movie?
