- Hi!
Cold War Motors just picked up this tidy 1964 Rambler 660 Wagon. It's got the 196 c.i. ohv 6 cylinder engine and a 1 barrel carb. It's a 3 speed auto with manual steering and brakes. Let's get it to go! The fuel pump was shot from sitting so long, but otherwise the Rambler was complete. I think the car has been off the road since the early 80's, judging by the bias tires and old registrations. As per viewer requests, no more music! Thanks for checking it out!
Fun coming across these old episodes, I've never seen. What ever happened to this gem??
That's a good question. Scott did an inventory of all his cars not too long ago, and I don't remember seeing this one.
I guess somebody bought it?
Watching this after 10 yrs - you've come a long way!
The Flying Scot 196 engines were like that. Chance of starting was always great
That one is in great shape. You are very lucky. Keep that in a garage and take care of it.
I've had 3 Ramblers with that same motor.
It's really in decent shape considering how long it has been there. There's no clear shot of the interior or underneath, but the rust looks mild, which is surprising given its location. Great find; it looks like a cozy car for a cold winter day.
My family had one. Gold. Nice car, got traded for a 66 ambassador 990 wagon .
This could be the doppelganger to mine that the earthquake destroyed in 94!!! Thanks for a great memory
Clean looking car. I had a '64 660 Classic myself but it was a 4d sedan + the 6-cyl engine and manual gearbox had been replaced with a mopar 318ci V8 and automatic sometime back in the 80's. Sold the car few years ago, we now have a '62 Ambassador wagon.
ty .. i must say you have the most beautiful property xx
Please always show what your right boot is doing when starting up cars... Awesome video man!
A friend of my dad's once owned a 1964 rambler station wagon. I remember how he still had it when it was 10 years old. And a new piece of metal was being added to the driver's side since the floorboard had rotted out.
When the driver's floorboard rotted out, my Dad found a 3/4" plywood scrap in our garage, cut it to fit, and placed it where the floorboard had been. Worked great, prevented Fred Flintstone foot work. Gold 1964 Rambler Classic 660 station wagon with rear door, 296 V-8, standard tansmission, standard brakes, standard steering, and Rambler All-Transistor AM radio. Later I used the same trick on my 1969 Rambler sedan (straight 6, gold, AM radio), then on my 1981 Chevrolet Citation sedan. Cleveland road salt was nasty to cars of those vintages.
Correction: 287 V-8.
I dont know who owns that car at present time but I love that model!!! I'm envious. Let me know if it's for sale. A drive from Canada to Florida in a 50 year old car sounds like a dream come true. Tip of the hat to your talent and incredible craftsmanship. I thought I had seen all of your videos until I saw this old one pop up!!
Hi Michael! Thanks for the note... Glad you liked the vid. Unfortunately, this old Rambler was pretty rough underneath... I sold it to a fellow who said he was gonna fix it up, but I doubt he ever did, unless he was a really good welder and fabricator. Too bad, because it was all there and ran well, but structurally it was poor. Thanks for watching this stuff...Cheers!
@@coldwarmotors I appreciate it greatly that you took the time to reply. Say hello to Frankers and Stell !!
@annihilator1100 Sorry, this car is not roadworthy. Trailer only, No title, $500.
Again, probably best as a parts car. Thanks for your interest.
Thousands of years from now archaeologists will dig up a Rambler, throw in a battery and it'll run without a hitch. There's good reason why so many rental companies had Ramblers.
That is MINT!
my 74 hornet is still chuggin along as a daily driver lol. They were a great bare bones well designed car that was easily made fast, cause they were also like legos with dropping big engines in em. A poor mans car, but way better than the poor mans cars out today.
It’s alive
Hi! The bottle is a substitute gas tank; it works with gravity when the fuel pumps fail in these old cars.
Thanks for the kind words; it's always nice to hear from people in other parts of the world.
coldwarmotors the rambler 232 six was excellent with 7 main bearings as my mom's 1966 Rambler American 440 wagon was equipped with the 232 six
@annihilator1100 The body panels are pretty good. The main rust is in the frame rails and the shock towers. Floorpans have been patched up at some point, also.
Everything is repairable, but...
I am near Edmonton, by the way.
Think you'll find that's the same family of AMC straight 6s that evolved into what they became and were used in Jeeps as late as 2007.
@sytsesinnema Glad you enjoyed it!
They called these "Cross Counties" but I've driven them a lot farther than that.
@heyther3456 Thanks for the clarification! Sounds like a similar set-up to the Ford C4.
(That's my old handle & I see my comment is gone.) I drove a '66 Rambler with the same quadrant. Yes, I think the transmission is related. Ford originally sourced its autos from Borg-Warner & AMC started using them in the late 50s. D2 starts out in 2nd gear & will switch to Hi automatically, D1 starts out in 1st gear and goes to 2nd then Hi automatically. L locks in into 1st if at a stop or below a certain speed. L holds 2nd if above a certain speed. Iirc what I read about L. Never tried it on my car.
❤😊
I didn't know it was rusted out. How far are you from Seattle?
How bad is the rust?
please excuse my ignorance .. But what does the bottle do ? I love watching your clips , there awsum .. cheers scootz ,aussie chic :)
@coldwarmotors Anything can be fixed my friend :P
Not like there's many of these cars left anyway, so something tells me you should keep it at least salvageable ;)
So out of curiosity what do you do with all the cars
Everything is vacuum on it
hi i both a 1965 amc rambler and looking for front suspension kits, spring coil, ball joint and interior seats. Could you help me find those parts? If you have any names or numbers or company names for these parts.
Single Head light, 4 door, 6 cylinder, automatic.
Justin Naba You can find a lot of parts here. amcrc.com/
Nicw
Well make sure you didnt get the wrong one cuz i think you might of picked up the wrong one
Priceless ,
these cars were not big stars back in the day ,
however, they were rock solid reliable transportation
this is a well cared for unit
Stunning beauty! I hope it enjoys winters in a heated garage now!
Dear Scott N..
UA-cam suggested/proposed
this after I had just watched the newest CWM video. So I instantly watched it... of course! By the way: Really nice red wagon. What happened to this car? Was it sold? Do you remember?
Best regards luck health and wisdom.
Ha ! I was just about to ask the same. My boss had the very same wagon , color scheme and all , but with polished Torque Thrusts and nice rubber. It was a beauty at all the car shows.
Dear @@shaunclifton5281
Unfortunately there is still no answer to this from CWM channel. After 9 months even a human baby is born so I guess they will never reply. :-(
Best regards, luck and health.
Scott answered. We just didn't read enough comments. He said the Rambler is rusted out and he sold it to a man who wanted to restore it. Cheers
@@shaunclifton5281
Ah, okay, thanks for the information.
Sincerely yours.
Gotta love the youtube algorithm for suggesting this blast from the past. The yard looks so empty! Personally, I think the 63 Rambler Classic is the best looking car of the decade. What a nice time capsule treat - both the car itself and the peak back 10 years to an earlier ColdWarMotors.
I'm a longtime subscriber and enthusiastic viewer of the CWM channel, but this is the first time I stumbled upon this 2010 chapter! Somebody here in Brooklyn NY is selling this exact year/make/model/trim level cheap, and I looked it up to gauge resale values. What a shock when this video was suggested! Thanks Scott & all the agents. Big shout out, and a raise of the glass, to the great Stella who brightened all the videos she appeared in.
I live in Rambler country, I remember the days of getting dizzy from the body plant across the street from where I worked, when the wind was out of the west southwest you catch a good paint buzz.
My room mate had a "bler" that looked just like this one
Same - Miss the 7 am and noon and 3:30 pm steam whistle!
That is a clean simple car, great.
AMC always got second hand ratings but they were some of the toughest cars.
Dennis LePorte Re: "AMCs some of the toughest cars." I grew up in Massachusetts. A state that turned fairly new cars into rust buckets. For some reason the AMCs did not rust out that much. Even as a kid I noticed that,
+inkey2 completely true, if you look it up, AMC cars of that time are all dipped in some sort of anti rust paint that did a decent job of preserving them
+Shane Blandford-Scherr I remember as a kid that The Boston Gas Co bought a bunch of them as their fleet cars. They kept them for a number of years and for some reason they did not rust. All the while the Fords, GMs and Chrysler products rusted like crazy over the headlights, rear quarter panels etc. If I could buy a brand new clone of those old early/mid 1960s AMCs....and be able to get parts for them.....I would gladly drop $15,000 on one. Good basic transportation with a solid reliable 6 cylinder
+inkey2 Ha! I actually recall that. They used a lot of Novas too which were also know for their durablity. My uncle was a big wig with Boston Gas. The sixs were nearly industructable.
+Dennis Leporte I think I am remembering this right ....all the Boston Gas fleet cars in the early/mid 1960s were painted this very drab green with the Boston gas name/logo. They were all over the Boston suburbs
Amazing for a near 60 year old family truckster of yore that hadn't been running for probably the longest time.
My Dad had 1 when I was a kid,the rearend leaked, and went dry,Got it relubed, after that every time you decelerated it sounded like you were being chased by a police car, that was kinda fun at times.
Similar shape to the Studebaker Wagonaire
You're the first guy to post a video of the Rambler moving and I thank you for that. Most of the videos on here are vids of the Rambler in a parking spot, and not even a station wagon at that!
Awesome video!
"While riding in my Cadillac, much to my surprise, a little Nash Rambled was following me, about 1/3 my size."
Beep Beep...Beep Beep...
Ramblers were actually very well built cars. My parents bought a new Rambler wagon in 1962. It had a straight OHV 6 cylinder mill. I don't know why my Dad did not opt for the optional aluminum block V-8. The small engine seemed to pull the car just fine with a family of seven. We made several trips from Seattle to Disneyland in California with no problem. Our wagon had Ramblers' "Push Button" transmission selector and I think the exhaust pipe was coated in porcelain! It had that torque tube drive shaft too. Your specimen depicted in this video is nothing but superb! I am so glad you guys saved it!! Bravo Zulu to you folks! Oh..........Stella too!
Was that the Buick aluminium v8 you are referring to?
I really don't know as its been so long ago. I thought that Rambler corp. made their own engines.
thanks for the reply, I know around this era Buick were doing a bit with aluminium v8's and my Australian car that I own from 1973 owes it's origins to the Buick aluminium v8 program that they sold off to Rover in the early 60's. was wondering if they were at all linked.
We also had a '62 Rambler Classic station wagon. My mother actually started to drive when my father bought it. It had the 195.6 cast iron six with the push-button Flash-o-Matic transmission. It still had a generator; the idiot light would come on whenever the car was idling. It was also the first car my father ever owned that had a radio. AMC offered a ceramic coated muffler and tailpipe (our '68 Ambassador had them, too) which were supposed to last for the life of the car, but the muffler needed to be replaced after five years. By 1968, everything started to go.
My late Mother used to drive a 1964 Classic 440. Her steering wheel was in exactly the same condition...horn ring fell out.
We had a 64 American, 440, gold. Great car, drove it every where as learned to drive in it.
Got a 990 4dr.. 64 327 2bbl it's a factory hotrod
This is about a $10.000 to $15.000 Car these days !
What an awsome survivor
Hope it found a good home
@JSneaker Thanks! Glad you liked it. Thanks for the correction. It shows D2 and D1 on the column shift, and also an L. I guess I misunderstood it to mean 2-speed. I never really got going fast enough to count the shifts! I used to have a '59 Super with the same engine, but it was a 3 speed stick.
She looks and sounds sweet after all those years. She deserves a good home.
watching this in 2024 . I never saw this video before. What a nice wagon!
Rambler hey. Now i have that song in my head by

We left for Frisco in your Rambler
The radiator running dry
I've never been much of a gambler
and had a preference to fly.
etc.
Keep on ramblin' ramblers.
I wouold love to own that car.
Yeah amc built a solid car but they were always kinda cheap and not really popular or luxurious. Its cool to see theyre actually desireable now, not gonna see that with kias in 30 years lol.
Yup, each case is different. I'm glad to see people take an interest.
I can't think of a better project for someone who has the time, than restoring a piece of history. I think it's good for the soul....
Que pregunta.
¡Es un Rambler,!
Un Rambler es un fierro, no va a dejar de arrancar y andar jamás.
¡Aguante el Rambler!
Classic clean car sweet
What a wonderfully preserved wagon, reminds me of my old 68 Rambler AMX 390 with go package, well maybe just a little! ;]
Waxing and old guy nostalgic...
7 of us drove from California to Wisconsin and back in one of these.
My family. In 1964.
With the rear facing seat, in the way back.
There were a lot of radio ads for a new Ford, called Mustang.
AMCs are coming out of the woodwork all of a sudden. And that's wonderful to see.
Looks like 2 seasons in Alberta, winter and winter will be right back. See the 72 Newport in the back ground, he’s had that a long time.
* When we were kids we never would have thought much of that but now it's Way Cool ! 👊😎👍
My dad bought a AMC Concord wagon , sure like to find one like you got here , have you ever sold any of your auto's?
My first car was a 1964 Rambler Classic 660 wagon.
This one is pretty nice, gotta love AMC.
Compound looks so different now!
wth!......its ....its .......shiiinneeeee!.....completely unacceptable!
All Ramblers are runners.......
+classic287 Yeah your right. Always pretty durable esp mid-sixties
Very tough to kill em.
Yes, Rambler was a poor man's car. I know, I was poor and had 9 of them in the 60s and 70s. Very easy cars to fix yourself. One thing I learned early, Keep a few ignition condensers in the glove compartment. I had a 1961 Rambler Classic a few years ago as a sunday driver.
My dad had a 61 rambler classic wagon that you could not kill as he was very rough on his cars
Part it out? Man, that would be a crime!
I would say that is a very prime candidate for a full restore, even if her belly is rough. Gorgeous car!
How much do wasn't for it.😅
anytime you label your car a "classic" that's the end.
@x422mno Thanks for the note! I wasn't aware these came with pushbutton transmissions on the earlier models until you mentioned it. Looks like 64 was the year they returned to the normal setup.
cool steering wheel and dashboard
@Super87IROCZ Hi, I think I used the movie editor program that comes with the IMac, but lots of these types of programs will allow you to do that effect.
@outruncat Sorry, I sold the Rambler to a fellow who was going to restore it. I hope you find the parts you need!
Rambler 6 cylinders were really good
@MoparNewport It could certainly be done; I just have too many projects already...
Good God, my dream car. Ever considered selling?
Looks great, runs great. You could put it on the road again. Nice job.
I say it again in 2018.
I like how you put the vertical lines in the picture-as if it were old 16 MM film. question: has Stella ever REFUSED to ride in a car?
Hi! Well, she is less impressed with 2 doors, but she'll usually get into anything that I'm in because she doesn't want to miss out on any of the action...
A big AMC fan here get more Ramblers and Nashes as they are a dying breed and my family had 5 Ramblers through the years great cars Cold War Motors.
The dream of every young family in '64 - the Cross Country BLER Wagon! Many a Cheetos and spilled shake graced its interior confines back-in-the-day. The Cold Warriors remained undeterred for it to ride on in homely grace.
The dash is extreme!
what a beauty, my parents had the same car and color except with a push button trans. I remember going to the drive-in movies as a wee lad about 5 years old in westerly Rhode island.Good times.thanks for the video.
cheers. hello Stella!!
Good cars these old Ramblers. My aunty had a green sedan the same as this one. I had a '66 Rebel, last of the push button doors. (If I remember correctly.)
One day Cold War Motors will shock us all by towing in from the scrap yard a '57 Chevy Bel Air hardtop. I have faith! :)
My old neighbor used to only buy Nashes and Ramblers because he would say "They'll rust apart before they're drive trains dies".
@fuseli "Pumping the Gas Cam" got it!
Nice I had one
Very impressive, this upload...
Hey! Thanks so much for the kind words and for helping us out! All the very best from me and Frankers and the Agents!
When i was a kid, the local priest had a 65 Rambler. He had it for years. It always started despite all kinds of snow snd ice. Great car
@caleb6868 It looks pretty good, but is quite rusted underneath...I guess I'll just drive it around in my yard.
Ramblers were great cars as my mom and dad owned 10 of them from 1959 to 1982.
232
this is a great car but too bad it says Classic on the side...take Stella along, e h?
OMG a roommate had this very same model/color great car it was.
We named it The Bler 😀
thank you for your response , you'll never believe it .. 5 mins later after watching one your clips again and reading comments ,someone said what it does .its unbelievable what we can do these days with cars .. .so thank you .. and yes i am in sunny Australia ;) xx
I agree. It should be restored and appreciated... sometimes they get there... sometimes they dont. sometimes they become a custom job and all the OG stuff is removed. you never know. one car could help save 50 others.
Wow! I actually had a 63 Rambler660! barn Find. It was a white 2door with same engine as yours with a 3 on the tree and a sunroof. I was able(after lots of parts searching to restore almost mint)
I had the same problem with a horn ring and the shifter linkages in the column annd the washer footpump. also those vaccum powered wipers sucked, I had to get a new for a marlin.
