My arms were pumped just watching. Thanks for the vid, took me back 30 or so years back when all we had were the air cooled two strokes. Remembering the old Suziki RM 250.
Watching this video and reading the comments has convinced me to find and buy one. Few months back I rode my buddies cr500 for a while and when I got back on my CRF450 got the feeling of driving my lawnmower, the sound and sluggish weight felt like a retarted lost snail and I'm not talking about make crazy girlfriends lower end. I was about to get off and push lol. Also was riding with a group of 10 buddies all on four strokes and the CR500 dominated.
I have ridden many bikes in my years, but the one I always will remember is my wicked fast 86 CR500, Moose racing torque porting, 2lb flywheel weight, slightly more compression, DG National pipe, an absolute animal of a bike. Respectively known as the "trenchdigger 500" All KNEW not to be directly behind when the loud handle was turned, the roost would knock you off your bike.
This looks so fun, Makes me want a dirt bike again. when i was younger i had a YZ80 with roostboost and after market exhaust and a few other tweaks.. It would romp on 125s all day long.. Miss the hell out of it.. Had one hell of a power band in 3rd gear.. 2 stroke water cooled demon.. Cool VIDEO!! :D
I love that you can hear the rocks and dirt pelting your helmet. I hate being behind a 450 while it's kicking dirt up. I could only imagine what this was like. Nice video!
Ah the memories, Maico 490 sand spider, bored and ported, crack the throttle in fifth gear and it would instantly stand straight up! The intake noise sounded like it was going to suck your balls into the motor any second. You never forget the rush of adrenaline these bikes produce, wish we had the go pro camera ask then. Maico was the quickest bke I ever rode, wish I had it back. The Ktm 500 mx I traded for it was actually faster, when I rode with a big group of friends the Ktm was always the bike the crowd gawked at when it fired up, loud and bad ass. Friends told me Ktm stood for "kills the man", two total knee replacements later, I think they were right!
It looks like you were holding better lines, and had more speed coming into the turns. He simply had too much power over you for you to be competitive. I bet if you were both on 125's or 250's you would out-ride him easily.. But maybe he was not trying that hard in this video?? Love the big 2 strokes! I'm about to buy my first 2 stroke after riding 4 strokes all my life. I'm getting a CR250!
Pros talked about the old 2 stroke 500s once on TV. And said the reality of the bike was that only like 10 people in the world had the talent to open up the bike the way its meant to be.But that was the old 500 2 stroke.
Hey, cool clip. Real glad I stumbled onto this. Bout to get back into riding, after being out of it seriously, for decades. I've looked at the KTM 380 2T's they made a few years back. Actually, for yours only being 300cc, I was pretty impressed. This little track or riding loop was not giving the other guy as easy of a time outpowering your bike, as a faster track would have. Yours sounds and seemed real nice. Clearly not close on the initial hit, as the much bigger bore. Liked how yours turns..
I ride a KDX200. When larger bikes get ahead of me on the straight-aways, I make up for it in the turns - most people get lazy on the turns - get on the throttle in the first quarter of the turn instead of the last quarter and you will shorten the distance back down to zero in the turns (then they'll walk away from you again on the straights, but they won't see you then - but on those turns, they'll hear BRAP BRAP BRAP on their tailpipe and think you were on their ass the whole time :)
500 2 strokes rule I love mine! Best is with a good set of Ice racing tires on big ole lake eat 4 strokes all day beat on a fully built ron hamp 09 yz450f all winter with a 95 kx500 stock besides fmf pipe!
yes, that´s my father:) he i´s a really a good rider and he is very proud about his own built cr500!!! it´s hard that his bar-mounts from WRP broke and he distroyed his shoulder completely:( my dad couldn´t work for 3 months and could not prepare the suspension for his costomers which is his job! get well dady!!
ive had that KTM (mine was a 360cc) and they fly! awesome bike. that track is very cool too. i like how theres some trees and brush in between the track, and its not just all open.
I have had a 300 and own a 380. The 380 when tuned properly won't give up anything to a CR 500 on a track like that. The 300 is the swiss army knife of dirt bikes. You can do just about everything with them. I still like them better then any of the current 4 strokes - even the Husaberg (which I have ridden). Just a personal preference. The berg is real nice but it just feels odd to me.
can't we all just get along lol :) all were really trying to do is light that fire inside of us..... I drive a 2 stoke kx125 , a 4stroke ktm 250 both with big bore kits , a 900s razor , 550 sportsman4x4, and all my whitewater kayaks too ,, it don't matter what it is if if does the job for you and you enjoy it:) just be safe , be cool , and enjoy life
my father raced a 1988 kx250 for 2 years with out a problem, he then sold it to his friend who raced it for a further 2 years, he also raced it without it breaking on him. the person my father bought the bike off won the irish motocross championships on it. 2 strokes are 100 times more reliable than 4 stroke bikes
You done pretty well to stay with him though. The BIG CR 500 is a Tractor, I know I own one. Their good on the straights & not so good on corners. It's just one of those things. Bloody good fun but!!
There were no 90HP CR500s sitting on the starting line of any 500cc outdoor national. Factory Honda actually detuned the bikes. I own 2 87's and a 2000 CR500. All 3 put out around 58ish, the 87's hit harder. The HP didn't go down in later years, the porting and gearing changed to lessen the hit and broaden the powerband.
Four Strokes will never be able to fulfil that feeling of exhilaration, when you slip the clutch on a Two Stroke, and let that fucking powerband take you away to another place!
I tell you what kid, you give it a good go that is for sure. The only problem with when someone shows up on a CR500 on ANY track, you will be picking shit out of your teeth for days after, as all your going to do is eat shit from its Rooster. There BRUTAL!!! If the track was alot bigger, you would never of got near it... But what a spot on chase it was.... Its nice to see people with Bollox... Enjoy and be safe... Thanx again i really enjoyed that Video ;o)
Remember the CR500 is ancient technology. It would be amazing if a CR500 could even keep up with a exc300. Not only did the CR500 keep up, but it was faster too.
Nice style bro! Blacked out looks sick as well. 39 dislikes? WTF is wrong with people? Riding dirtbikes is puer fun!! I had an '89 cr500.....never new what gear I was in as 1st and 5th all felt the same. Offroader811 keep it up son, I am.
good effort for trying looked like you were working hard as hell trying to keep up and the dude on the 500 was on a Sunday ride:) those CR500 are wicked fast so i still give you an "A" for effort good try:)
I'm about to start restoration of an '85 Husqvarna 500XC, and have another as well. Really think of myself as a open bike all the way. But, especially being into older iron, I know the turning and quick handling is going to be a huge negative, or atleast that's what I'm expecting. Your bike really sounds and looks from the footage, like it handles really nice, and feels light even from the footage. Would be a great woods or tight trail rider it seems, where winning an hp contest doesn't matter.
@GTAking01 in 2000, I bought a brand new KX500, it was only about 20 lbs heavier then the KX250 back at the time. It was about 220 lbs and a 250 was a shade over 200. You have to be very smooth on the trottle with big bore 2 strokes.
i never knew that, damn i learn something new every day. wow he was a boss and he was scared to ride a CR500, i didn't think a dirt bike could be that powerful. that's alot, figured the cr500 would actually be alot better in the day. 50 for the 300 is not bad im guessing? i never knew that, and damn that is pretty efficient. yea true :/ btw thanks alot for the info it helped out alot!
Watching this video and reading the comments has convinced me to find and buy one. You did good, notice he didn't need to clutch it to get in the powerband, no replacement for displacement, but you have a nice bike, and with some time on that track you might get him, just takes a bit more work because he can lug around corners, your close bro !
Well, I can certainly understand the health/injury issues. I've got some permanent issues that may really get in the way of my riding aggressively as well. At this point, I don't know if I'll be able to get in on some vintage mx racing, or if I'll be stuck with mellow trail riding. My biggest regret though, is selling bikes when I got bored or didn't have anyone to ride with, at a couple of points in time years ago. Really wish I'd have kept a bike, and stayed in the scene.
watching the video again, I thought the guy on the 500 was taking slower lines, but was also looking back from time to time. I think the 500 rider was faster and was just playing with the guy with the helmet cam. His entry speed to the corners was much faster. Good riding anyhow...
After 25 years and still the most powerful 2 stroke ever made. God I wish they still made this thing.
Na mate maico 700
+FuZe Reflex Maico sucks
+Avenger 21 agreed
+027 - SpeedyRaceTeam - Noah for real a cr500 is built tough and dependable because it's made by Honda
+Avenger 21 if you ever have time look up top 10 dirtbike brands Honda is number one and Yamaha is number two
One cannot simply catch the elusive 500cc two stroke first one must master it - Winston Churchill

Taking that roost like a champ.
Very cool video. You ride very well and the guy on the CR500 is Mr. Smooth. Fun to watch. Thanks for posting it.
I remember getting hit by those dirt clods from a 500 in an open race that shit hurt haha
this is how I wish I pass some time with my friends
you guys rock, and keep up the 2 stroke beasts!

This is one of the best helmet cam chasin' vids I've seen in a very long time. And who says an EXC can't moto? Super nice ridin' boys.
Ah the memories, Maico 490 sand spider, bored and ported, crack the throttle in fifth gear and it would instantly stand straight up! Sick bike!!! That honestly might be the best looking bike ive ever seen!

what a beautiful bike the 300 is such a beast!!!
My dad has the same bike. Such a good engine fair play, controllable until you hit the power band lol.
Nice riding guys! You did well to hang with the 500.
500 2 strokes rule I love mine! Best is with a good set of Ice racing tires on big ole lake eat 4 strokes all day beat on a fully built ron hamp 09 yz450f all winter with a 95 kx500 stock besides fmf pipe!

two words sum up the big bore two strokes ,VIOLENT POWER.
ive had that KTM (mine was a 360cc) and they fly! awesome bike. that track is very cool too. i like how theres some trees and brush in between the track, and its not just all open.
Great riding man. Track looks like it would be a lot of fun. Recently switched to the 4-strokes but I still bleed pre-mix!
He kind of roosted on ya. Haha. Both bikes are sweet. Had a buddy with a KTM 380EXC. Plush suspension, plenty of motor-vation. Nice riding!
good vid man. your a good rider. Love the sound of the bike also
they're good small high revving engines because they have obviously have no cam shaft, less resistance, less moving parts.

+Monaco161 My family had 4 Blasters at one point (Ranging from 1986 to 2002) Those things are unstoppable.
best 2 stroke i ever seen. 2 strokes usually look terrible (yes, especially the 85)
In my country every time we hear of a guy dying on a cross motorcycles, it's the CR 500 ;) ... the true widow maker.
I just bought a 87 cr500 for $300 in a auction two weeks ago. can't wait to get it going.
hey great video you did pretty good, and your bike is still a 2 stroke and a nice one at that too.

Its all about his suspension. He uses trick oil with electric control visco. The 500 cc is the handicap to keep the secret ;-)
I wouldn't care if it was a 2 stroke or 4 stroke, I just want another dirt bike
CR500 enough said.
i like how the cr 500 taps the throttle twice and then coasts in the straightaways
Nice style bro! Blacked out looks sick as well. 39 dislikes? WTF is wrong with people? Riding dirtbikes is puer fun!! I had an '89 cr500.....never new what gear I was in as 1st and 5th all felt the same. Offroader811 keep it up son, I am.

nice driving ;) that thing in front is a beast

the CR 500 was a beast but I would go faster on a thumper than a 2 stroke they give more grip , but they are both great fun .
Watching this video and reading the comments has convinced me to find and buy one. thats a nice track, looks super fun!
Great helmet cam footage mate!!!
Nice bike and skills, keep it up !!
You didn't do bad at all, he just had more power out of the corners is all. Great riding!
I love my YZ125. but after i bought a brand new 2011 KXF450R I love the power of the 4stroke but Honestly it'll never compare to my Yz.
and you sir have won the heres your sign award
Learnt my lesson about riding with guys these good. Got ran over and broke 2 ribs when my back tire lost traction and slid out.
I grew up on 2strokes, but at the end of the day you need that bottom end torque that the 4strokes have...
Nice riding, nice track, nice vid, thanks!
Remember: Of you ain't mixing gas, than your not getting beat by everyone in your class.
nice video; those are some massive tabletops (well 1 or 2 of them)
I like the track :-)
you know your going fast when your riding a two stroke. :)
listen ta the roost hitting the camera!!! lol!!! LOVE THE BIG BORE SMOKERS!!!!!
oh man my dad had the ol' big red (what we called the cr500) back then... one of the most insane 2strokes then and now!!
im likein the grafics on ur ktm!!! they look sweeeeet
Sweet vid & riding bro keep it up ;)
You did good, notice he didn't need to clutch it to get in the powerband, no replacement for displacement, but you have a nice bike, and with some time on that track you might get him, just takes a bit more work because he can lug around corners, your close bro !
rich running 2 stroke smells the best
cool vid man and agree that the sound of a 2 stroke is so much better than music ii don't even watch if it has music
I love the smell of two stroke in the morning :D
You actually did pretty well, he didnt look to have that much of an advantage on that tight track!
Hey just a tip keep the throtle going in the corners the half way wide open it helps
I'm a 4-stroke guy, But I think I'm falling for 2-strokes.
I want to see a video of just the bike, Good job it looks sweet.
that bike is so sick love the seat
Looks like a FUN track!!! =D

king of 2 stroke!!!
your 300 looks insane man!
My banshee had no problems with cr500 except on really steep hills. Wish I still had it :(
watching the video again, I thought the guy on the 500 was taking slower lines, but was also looking back from time to time. I think the 500 rider was faster and was just playing with the guy with the helmet cam.
His entry speed to the corners was much faster.
Good riding anyhow...
You done pretty well to keep up with the 500 actually, man did he throw some rocks at ya.
music to my ears :) Good video, fun track! Thanks for sharin guys.
Keep at it and in time you will catch the CR500.
You ride pretty damn good, that 500 though............elusive.
Its perfect for starts. Just hold it wide open and kick up through the gears.
keep spinning laps, he'll get tired.
gotta say that is one nice sounding 2 smoke!
i like that Track set up :)
ahah each time the cr roost it you get hit by a millions rocks!
I love the damn thing!!
