So Glinda’s voice is typically played as very high pitched and over the top on broadway, so Ariana’s speaking voice is accurate to the broadway show but it’s modernized enough. It’s almost suppose to be annoying. She’s the person that everyone thinks is so perfect and great but you know there’s something sinister there at the same time. An oblivious kind of sinister. Shes a very complex character.
And I found it quite interesting that he described Ariana’s delivery as “one note” as that is technically Glinda’s character [at the start of the story]. She lacks depth - one note. In fact, Glinda’s operatic singing doesn’t occur until she is older, and I personally believe that was very intentional. (Showcasing both growth and a regal nature.) It’s just less obvious because it’s the first thing we hear from her in the story. Then there is Elphaba who has depth, but it is arguably harmful at times. She has been conditioned to believe her mere existence caused trauma to her family. She is therefore -in her mind- limited. Hence the “unlimited” feeling she gets upon receiving attention from higher powers who encourage her to be more. But of course the story unravels and they both discover how misguided they have been. Consequences in their journey bring them to better understand themselves and reveal what they truly value in life.
"Who's the baddie?" is the core question of this show and it's book. Is there a flipside to the story we've been told? Things are not always as they seem. And Glinda's voice, if it's handled as in the show, it starts annoying and child-like and as the character evolves, so does the voice.
I’m already booked in with my friend to see this as our Christmas movie! I’m already crying, I’ve never made it through For Good or Defying Gravity without sobbing!
Same!!! I'm just sad we're going to have to wait till part 2 for For Good as that's my fave Wicked song. Hearing Cynthia's version of Defying Gravity gave me chills
@@Snowdrop85 Yass. If they don't make a cameo. But nevertheless it's the way For Good is structured that makes it such a good song. I honestly can't wait for Jonathan Bailey

it’s the origin story of both witches justifying their actions in the movie The Wizard of Oz, as Wicked ends where The Wizard of Oz begins. a strong theme within the musical (and guessing book too- haven’t read it) is that nobody is truly good or evil but it’s society that conditions us to think this way - I trust from the trailer that they have stuck with this and this idea will be a central theme explored in the movie. hope this helps 😊
no oz didnt start where wicked begins. the scene in wizard of oz where dorothy threw water at wicked witch of the west is also towards the end of wicked. it is same story overlapping. wicked shows the past and midway through when dorothy was transported to oz. it's more of different "cameras" focusing on different locations at the same time type of thing. in wizard of oz you get dorothy's perspective, in wicked you get elphaba's perspective
@@endor8witch I'd agree with you! Maybe the last 1/3 of Wicked is the whole of Wizard of Oz the way I see it but in the POV of the Wicked Witch of the West.
As someone who has seen Wicked live, the Defying Gravity is incredible and that's where part 1 will end I'm assuming I don't want to say who villains are for the first half but they've addes thibgs thar aren't in the musical into the film as well. Part 2 will be set years aftwr just like the kusical but if they dont get awards fir costume, set design and visuals
The wizard is the main villain, both women are protagonist. I wish so much I could watch this story for the first time again! Enjoy the journey to Oz this year guys! Great reaction!
It’s the origin story of both Glinda the “Good Witch” and the “Wicked Witch” of the West, it also sets up the origin of the tin man, the scarecrow and the lion.
This is the origin story of both witches of Oz introduced in The Wizard of Oz. For years, Wicked advertising included the catchphrase “Because so much happened before Dorothy dropped in”. It’s important to remember that Wizard was shown from Dorothy’s (an outsider’s) perspective. Wicked will show how the Wicked Witch (Elphaba) might not be as bad as everyone saw in Wizard and G(a)Linda might not be as good as everyone saw.
NO SPOILERS: The WOZ is told from the perspective of Dorothy and Glinda. Wicked is told from the perspective of Elphaba aka The Wicked Witch of the West.
6:40 - I have a feeling this movie was going to be released in October to coincide with Halloween, but Universal was likely pressured into delaying it until November after the elections because the story really hits close to home.
I enjoyed how unfiltered you two were in this review. I was disappointed that you weren't Wizard of Oz fans😅 I loved it as a kid and get excited whenever there is an interesting adaptation of it. But I'm glad you both liked the trailer and look forward to seeing the movie! Valid critiques at the end🤭
‘Didn’t get the vicious nastiness’? Very interesting. Well… I highly recommend you rewatch the last minute of the trailer, or whenever it is that the Wizard says the “enemy” line. Look at what images we are shown and consider where and when in the world’s history those kinds of events have occurred. Personally, those moments were very striking, and I appreciate that the movie is being very clear about it beyond the lyrical content and citizens holding pitchforks, etc. The powers that be in those locations of their world are obviously well off economically and would use all of their resources to achieve their ends.
The villain is OZ it has always been always will be, you have no real power, he none then he had none when Dorthy came he always used smoke and mirrors, this film will be an inspiration to a generation, 20years we have waited let’s just enjoy the ride.
"Who's the baddie?" That is the entire point of the show. You would think it is the Wicked Witch if you watched The Wizard of Oz, but things aren't black and white. "Are people born wicked, or do they have wickedness thrust upon them".
Although most people know, Ariana as popstar, she actually got started in Broadway and she has been mentored by Kristin Chenoweth who plays the original Glenda on Broadway. You can tell that is Ariana‘s main expression of how she’s playing this role because literally it’s like copy and paste.
The one thing you liked are the shoes 😂 and that’s one thing that doesn’t appear in Wicked due to copyright, the shoe in wicked are silver (as they are in the original book), they were only made red for the Warner Bros movie to show off the Technicolor.
Imagine the original Wizard of Oz film as a sort of state-issued propaganda version by the Ozian government. This version takes a look behind the curtain to tell you what "really" happened, and how things came to be the way the were by the end of the old film.
As a person whose favorite childhood movie was The Wizard of Oz, I am offended that you all hated it 🤣🤣🤣 it’s the origin story of the Wicked Witch of the West/Elphaba (the green witch) loved you’re review!!
i love the book and i've been waiting for this to be a movie since early 2000s lol finally this will be a good production. the baddie in this film will be made obvious when you watch it - without spoiling it. the entire movie is about looking beyond someone's appearances and how the public is so easily swayed with clever campaigns to smear someone's reputation.
I never liked wizard of oz and never seen the musical amd the music of the musical isnt really my speed but i loved the movie. Ariana was great and really channeled the original actress for the role.
It was GHASTLY - a bad college graduation movie - sorry - yes it was an important film to be made - but boy it was disappointing - sorry we all feel differently about movies that’s what makes movies so great 👍
Ooh looks fab. It looks like it's the origin story of the good and bad witch, the battle of good and evil, the film we all know well. They started as friends. Jealousy and a binary culture of winner and loser pitted them against each other. I've always felt the Wizard of Oz was the result of the sisterhood wound, the Witch Wound. Women's gifts and power dividing them rather than uniting them. Unresolved shadow in both characters manifesting as rivals rather than sisters united. Who we know as the Glinda the good witch turns out to have been the one whose jealousy corrupted the other witch and created the split. Rich in symbolism, metaphor and mythology.
Ariana Grande seems to be purposefully channeling Kristin Chenoweth's version of Galinda vocally. Chenoweth originated the role on Broadway.
based on how she ideolizes chenoweth, i think she indeed channeled kristin
As she should, people would be mad if she did otherwise. Ariana did amazing!
Well I mean Kristen was mentoring her so it makes sense
4:19 she even adopted Chenoweth’s slight Oklahoma accent 😂❤
