The MacBook Pro M4 presentation from today showcasing how the new machines handle denoising RAW footage in Davinci Resolve irritates me, though. It would be so soothing to know their strategy.😅
Every time a FCP update is teased, we have a big list of features we want, and the actual update is about 3% of that. And yet, I still have that glimmer of hope
Curious what you think of the new "non-event" event style where Apple just roles out the keynotes for each new product without a (pseudo) live stream)? It seems Apple's approach to marketing is changing. Personally I like being able to watch the product(s) I'm most interested in as I can. On the other who would expect that we'd learn about new FCP features in a MacMini presentation rather than a MacBook Pro or Mac Studio presentation.
Interesting video, as always. I use all the main editing softwares, but I feel FCP is a better tool to tell the story. I like the addition of automatic captions, for long features documentaries is an incredible help for editing the tons of hours of interviews. Having said that, I think the main feature missing in FCP is a flawless integration with Logic Pro, using XML or AAF from XtoPro. When you send the AAF to sound mix in ProTools everything works fine, but in Logic is messy and problematic. For now FCP and Logic Pro, on long features, is not really compatible.
If Apple only makes the new features available on their newest chips, it's because of ram. They would have to admit that 8GB just isn't enough for heavy AI tasks etc.
Let's hope they come out with it soon. I have been using Davinci Resolve the last few months. They regularly update and the exports are super fast compared to FCP.
Very good video. Many of the features mentioned in the wishlists are already available on Capcut. I learned filmed editing on FCPX, but I find Capcut currently way ahead of FCPX, and I'm curious if others feel the same way.
I haven't been using Final Cut Pro for very long but I've found I enjoy it a lot more than Premiere Pro. Definitely excited for FCP11 bringing new features.
@@matthewTobrien I'm going to disagree - I have an M1 mini and an M1 MacBook Air (both were maxed out with the fastest chip and most memory available at the time), and they cannot do the new Smooth Slow-Mo Machine Learning with footage over 4K. Much of my footage is shot at 5.3K, and FCP gives this message, "Videos larger than 4K are not supported by Machine Learning retiming video quality on this system." So, it wouldn't surprise me at all if lower end machines don't support some of FCP's upcoming features.
Intel Macs have left for Davinci and it's quite compelling reason with 19.1 and how fast it runs on these systems. They are not trading in systems that are more than 5 to 10 thousand they will use them as long as possible as budgetary restrictions might restrict the weak adoption of FCP and it's lack of meaningful updates.
FCPX is so behind of all competitors that’s hard to believe Apple will ever catch up. But hopefully auto captioning and roto AI will finally be on the way sooner than later.

Would be good to see Apple edit their own videos for product releases on FCP. If they can’t then why should they expect other pros to be happy with the results of fcp?
I do wonder if there's any precedent for Apple sharing stuff about their biggest software upgrades ahead of the big mic drop. My thought is they'd release things for a 10.9, or a 10.8.2, but not an 11. Not that I'd say no to an 11! I just feel like Apple Intelligence needs more time in the oven first
I will be shocked if it's 11. That being said, auto-captions is a good start. But! Apple should've led the world in this-they have built-in AI chips, but have let the NLE world run away with this. I use Descript and VidCap (through my SetApp sub) for auto-captions for YT shorts and for clients' socials. Apple should buy Descript-it's like magic. You can transcribe a video, create your on-screen captions, but also then edit the video via the transcription, i.e., you can delete words in the transcription and it deletes the corresponding video. It also auto-detects junk words like "Um" and "like" you can delete them and the video. It's like magic. I also have to round-triip to DaVinci to use its Magic Mask when I need complex, tracked masks. Apple NEEDS their mask to be that good. 4 uears ago! lol Anyway, great vid! I sound jaded, but I still drive FCP every day.
Apple FCP is falling behind. Loads of AI video and audio apps out there are doing super amazing stuff. I am gradually shifting to Cap-Cut with affordable pro features.
I doubt that we will ever see redundancy from the early M1 set of systems, I'll eat my words but Apple committed to silicon, good riddance Intel IMHO. So these systems are running at peak, so I really cannot see how the early M1 systems could be made redundant, at the very least we have 10 years if not more on these machines, even then! They would have to come out with a system with a special section to a new M10 chip that all new software could only access, and I can't see that happening as these systems are all ready at peak and only getting better. I know I know, this has happened before, but we also, in the past, had to wait till a version .2 for an OS jump because SO much would break, and that hasn't happened in years! We get a .01 and that happens usually a month or 2 out, problems solved! Things change, and I am very optimistic about the entire M line going the distance!
I don't think we have 10 years with early M1 systems. Apple is already making them obsolete by preventing things like Smooth Slow-Mo Machine Learning from running on footage over 4K. When I try to use it on 5.3K clips, it displays an error message that says the feature isn't supported with footage over 4K on this system - so basically I can't slow down any of my 5.3K footage unless I use one of the older video quality settings.

I need to test this out, I have an M1 and an M3 and some RED 8k footage, I cannot believe that is the case and how specific that error message is as Apple Silicon is essentially the same other than numbers of cores of things tmk. But I could be completely wrong. Also, my silver door G4 is still operational, so these things last a long ass time! Not supported in any way, but still works!
@@MarkDHall Wow! I tested the 8k footage on my M3, no problems, on the M1, you can make an 8k timeline, bit no machine learning slowmo as reported! Bizarre, everything else works just fine, not that I cut 8k footage a lot!
It's a matter of having enough ram. If you only have 8GB, you're out of luck. Contrary to what Apple says, 8GB on a Mac is not equal to 16GB on a Windows machine.
@@akyhne So I agree, and the SOP I have had with Macs is to max out the ram where ever possible. My M1MAX has the most ram you could have at the time which I think was 64gig? My M3MAX has 128gig, so things changed ram wise. I know better than to do anything less than 16gig these days. TBH, 128gig ram is nuts, but ya never know! :)
If apple makes fcp updates m4 exclusive, i am moving to windows. M4 is only 1.3 times better than m3 which was 20% better better than m2. If they do this, i am out, very greedy and anti loyal consumer behaviour.
I"m with you - or I'd switch to other software. I already use DaVinci Resolve Studio, and it runs extremely smooth and fast on my first gen M1 Mac mini. @@MarkDHall i hate it when the the difference between cpus is 20-30% and brands lock features to the newer models. We have been accepting those on phones but if they start doing it to computers than whats the use
@@techgoggles Yes! I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max, and it's more than fast enough for me, so I'm holding off upgrading. I would like the advanced camera features of the newer models, but what I have works fine, so so I'm going to hold out for another year. I don't know the speed differences between the M1 mini chip and the M1 Pro/Max, but I'm sure it's not huge, and they surely could have enabled the Slow Motion thing on mine, even if it requires me waiting an extra 20 seconds.
Don’t get too excited yet… Apple could also say “here’s all these new features, but since it’s FCP11 - it’s gonna be subscription based… we’ll still support FCPX but it won’t see any updates” after all it is Apple. I mean Apple is at least back to the tick tock updated with their processor where M4 is only a marginal upgrade over M3 - so I made the right call with maxing out specs on the M3 MBP
