I have to brag: I got to see this live when I was a teen. We got tickets late, so I had to sit alone in row 4. This was my first ever Gilbert & Sullivan exposure, and I was ELECTRIFIED. Subsequently I became a G&S addict. :) What a fantastic production! And this is my favorite song of the entire show, too.

Jealous. I have been watching this since having a VHS copy off an A&E airing from the mid-80's. Must've watched 100 times.

    Wonderful!
I fell madly in love with Richard McMillan when I discovered this last Summer!
Yes, I know ... tragically, too late ... not to mention wildly inappropriate in the very first place!
But still, ... there you have it!
They are all splendid, of course, and I love them all!

Love G&S and have to agree this is the best ever. It is, or at least was available on DVD. I had the good fortune of seeing the Stratford performance live in Detroit back in the 80's. I have seen other G&S performed by Stratford as well but none had the genius of this one.

I saw this at Stratford the summer of 1982. The senior choir performed this as their senior showcase in Nov. 1982. My parents saw The Mikado at The Lyric Opera House (Chicago) spring of 1983. My mother declared my high school performance the best of the three. I wasn't in the high school production, so there wasn't a bias. I love this production of The Mikado. Sadly, I don't really remember the senior production. I do remember watching the Stratford production at the Avon Theatre.

The "tall fella" is Richard McMillan, one of Canada's best character actors IMO. Although most of his work is on stage (ie. he was Scar in Toronto's premier production of THE LION KING, and he played Saruman in the stage musical version of LORD OF THE RINGS, he has appeared on television and films as well.

I got to see this is in, I think, July of 1983 at the Avon in Stratford. 10 years old. I'd already seen the production that previous Christmas on CBC TV. I was so excited and was not disappointed. They modular scenery was very clever, the art direction inspired....and the cast were amazing.
Every time Pooh-Bah came on stage, the audience sat forward with a frisson of anticipation. Richard McMillan made the role for me....an all-time great performance for any G&S role. Bravo!

I must say, this interpretation of Pooh-Bah is pretty unique - it's not often you seem him portrayed by a tall, skinny guy; I'm used to seeing him more portly, like Kenneth Sandford's portrayal, for example. He also kind of sounds like a character from _Cats_ (the West End musical, not the crappy 2019 film), which is definitely something different.
