I saw this production in 1982 as as a young teenager, and the revivals the following year and when it was on tour. It was also my first visit to the city of Stratford and I've grown to love the small town charm. Unfortunately, my old VHS copy wore out.
Also… Hearing Martin Bookspan’s voice intro’ing… Oh, this is heavenly!
I was in high school, just behind Lincoln Center. My beloved voice teacher, Anna Ext, took us all to see this very production. This extraordinary cast. I’ll never forget them all. And this broadcast. Thanks so much for posting this. The memories come flooding back. ❤
I have been looking for this for so many years! What a blessing to find this. Thank you!
I can't believe this exists on UA-cam. This particular production has an extremely special place in my heart and I never thought in a million years I'd find it here. Like the other two (!!) I had a VHS recording of this and haven't seen it in YEARS. Thank you, thank you.
I have been searching for years for this production , since I no longer have my vhs recording. Thank you for posting this
Saw this on TV with Groucho Marx when I was a kid! On the Bell Telephone Hour in 1960, I was 8!
Performing "To sit in solemn silence" at speed with proper diction and intonation is a party trick I pull out to this day just because I can. Still working on Modern Major General, though.
Thank you for posting this! It has been a very, very long time. It looks just like my old (long gone) VHS recording. Wonderful! I signed into UA-cam just to say thank you! Thank you!
I got to see this is in, I think, July of 1983 at the Avon in Stratford. 10 years old. I'd already seen the production that previous Christmas on CBC TV. I was so excited and was not disappointed. They modular scenery was very clever, the art direction inspired....and the cast were amazing. Every time Pooh-Bah came on stage, the audience sat forward with a frisson of anticipation. Richard McMillan made the role for me....an all-time great performance for any G&S role. Bravo!

Too incredible. No words to describe the greatness of this piece of music. And these singers carried it off so wonderfully. Bravo! Bravo! Bravo!
I saw this at Stratford the summer of 1982. The senior choir performed this as their senior showcase in Nov. 1982. My parents saw The Mikado at The Lyric Opera House (Chicago) spring of 1983. My mother declared my high school performance the best of the three. I wasn't in the high school production, so there wasn't a bias. I love this production of The Mikado. Sadly, I don't really remember the senior production. I do remember watching the Stratford production at the Avon Theatre.
And you'll agree, as I assume, This performance is great as great can be. ;)
fantastic
This is bonkers! I love it!
This was a wonderful rendition. They added Canadian content. It's too bad that we can't get our dear Justin on a big black block.
Love how this version perfectly balances true opera, with understandability, so people like me who havent quite developed an ear for understanding opera can still enjoy it.
This is just so amazing !
It's pretty great!!
So good
Wonderful! I fell madly in love with Richard McMillan when I discovered this last Summer! Yes, I know ... tragically, too late ... not to mention wildly inappropriate in the very first place! But still, ... there you have it! They are all splendid, of course, and I love them all! 💘
The best little soliloquy Gilbert ever wrote. I include in my reckoning the Policeman song.
I echo Lawrence A's request. Have been trying to find this since 1991. Please help if you can.
Had this on video brilliant my favourite of all gand s
I have been looking for this production of New York City Opera 1991 Marriage of Figaro for years. Can you post the full production please. Do you have email address
I think I have this. I'm going through almost 30 VHS tapes my family had, some recorded before I was born, and this takes up 3 hours and 40 minutes of one tape. I don't think it's the whole thing, but it's a pretty big piece. Do you have an email address? I can send you a mega link if you like (I don't really want to upload something this long to my youtube account).
@@BubbleRum Hello. I have been looking for this since I was 16 years old when it was broadcast live in 1991. If you can help, please let me know. My addy is jjswami at yahoo. Thank you so much.
I love this Mikado. Especially in light of Canada’s Covid-19 vaccine mishap with the Chinese People’s Liberation Army and the clipping of the wings of the Cullen Commission into money laundering at Great Canadian casinos.
This is the most fast-paced version of this song.
I must say, this interpretation of Pooh-Bah is pretty unique - it's not often you seem him portrayed by a tall, skinny guy; I'm used to seeing him more portly, like Kenneth Sandford's portrayal, for example. He also kind of sounds like a character from _Cats_ (the West End musical, not the crappy 2019 film), which is definitely something different.
Please say there IS a DVD of this wonderful performance??
I went to watch this opera couple weeks ago because it was on. And I just watched another performance of the same opera tonight on TV. None can compare to this 1991 performance. Would really appreciate your response...
I'm sorry--do not have the entire performance
I love this performance so much! I watched it live on tv when I was a kid and taped it. But my VHS has deteriorated and I have no player. Do you have the entire performance in digital??
Nu pas ontdekt😔Blij mee, MamaNakku
The best version I have ever heared!
Am I the only one to find that Pooh-Bah looks a lot like Pierre Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada at that time?
Pooh-Bah is a lot better than Trudeau. And he sings a lot better.
Perfection! PERFECTION!!
ah yes, rehearsal vocal warmups
Imagine writing musicals where all the songs are tongue twisters
Gilbert and Sullivan’s says “hold my beer”
The brilliance of Sulivan's melodic inspiration allied to Gilbert;s witty word-play never palls. What better definition of theatrical immortality.
Yay I’m the 💯 like !!! 🙌🏼😂
The best I have ever heard!
Rest in peace, Richard Macmillan, I just learned he has passed away.
RIP Richard McMillan. :(
Oh no really I never know :'(
Stunning performance. To maintain that clarity and diction at that pace... Something all performers should aspire too.
I remember watching this on A&E many years ago. I have been looking for this version of the Mikado for years. I am so glad to finally be able to see it again... at least pieces of it. I haven't been able to find it to buy or download anywhere... could you point me in the right direction?

I have to brag: I got to see this live when I was a teen. We got tickets late, so I had to sit alone in row 4. This was my first ever Gilbert & Sullivan exposure, and I was ELECTRIFIED. Subsequently I became a G&S addict. :) What a fantastic production! And this is my favorite song of the entire show, too.
Jealous. I have been watching this since having a VHS copy off an A&E airing from the mid-80's. Must've watched 100 times.
+kijugently I saw this production when I was a teen also ! Love it so much. My favorite G & S show. Check out the Eric Idle version. Soooooo funny
My 5th grade pageant we did the Mikado, no joke, we did an abridged version of the show, tung twisters and all
When I was a teen, I got to perform with Erik Donkin (Koko) onstage in A Christmas Carol….such a genuinely kind man and a great performer
Lucky!!
Great performance from your Dad.Sometimes Pish Tush is a bit of a one dimensional character,it certainly isn't with your Dad.
Pish-Tush is such an underrated character.
I agree it was a great production, but I stil prefer the D'Oyly Carte.
