The Must-Have $6 Modification for Every Lone Star Grillz Smoker | Plus A Safety Tip for All BBQers

  • In this quick shoot, I focus on two things.
First, a modification that I think is absolutely essential for every LSG offset to make your ball valve drain 10 times more user friendly. I got this idea from Rus Jones of Smoky Ribs BBQ who had the LSG 24x36 offset with the same valve.
Second, I give a simple safety tip that I used to make fun of - but after personal experience with a scenario that no one wants to encounter while BBQing, it was time to make a change. . . .and share that change with you all. **See below for a correction to something I said incorrectly during the shoot.** See below also for safer brush alternatives recommended by my subscribers.
    Enjoy!

That mod is going to make life easier for sure Jonathan and thanks for the mention, I appreciate it. I haven't thought of a good solution for the wire bristle brushes either, but that yellow brush is safer for sure.

Rus - update on this. Grill Badger sent me out a couple all natural bristle brushes to try. I like them. I'm using them on my expanded metal and they're great! I did a review video on them a while back. Good people over there too.

Get a weed burner with a propain tank, torch the grill for about 5 min spray it off with cold water. Not only does it sanitize any food that was left on the grates but it cleanes really well. I have a Lone Star cabinet smoker and I clean it that way every time. The weed burner pretty much turns any food left on the grates to ashes and you just rinse off the ashes.

I hard piped my LSG 30” offset cabinet smoker, because I would add 4 gallons of water to my smoker when smoking. Keeps the humidity up in the smoker and heats the water so the drippings don’t stick. LSG makes a killer product. I have another one on order as I make this post.

Solid advice on the metal brushes. For the drain on the LSG, I’d just get a smaller bucket than putting some ridiculous looking plastic mod on a nice pit. The ash bucket you have on in the video works great. Ive been using one with my LSG since I got it in 2016 and it hasn’t rusted out yet even though water sits in it most of the year.

  • @crazymonkey9611

I remember Russ’ video with the angle. Love your solution. It lets you put your bucket on any side, and allows you to retract the downspout so it doesn’t get in the way as you move around it. Very clever.

Yep, the bristles do come of onto the grate. Expanded metal is worse due to the joint at the bottom of each opening where it will cut off the bristle. I have been aware of this but even being aware of it you can't see them all every time. I have two of those T shaped brushes and still use them but inspect closely and always rub down the grate with paper towels or clean rags then spray with oil. If you swallow one of those steel bristles, it is then a 50/50 chance of it puncturing your stomach or intestines. I also have one of the nylon brushes I use now on the expanded metal, and save the other for the straight grate. I like what you did on the drain mod, that makes it much easier for sure. I have a drain on my offset but do not use it for cleaning only grease dripping during a cook. I found if I'm gonna take out the grate and heat plate during cleaning anyway, I can take my 5 inch sheetrock knife and begin at the top of the drum and run it down thru and up the other side and collect the grease and rub it off on a couple paper towels. On a 36 inch drum, it doesn't take any time at all to work down the drum like this and it's all dry cleaning. Just put on a pair of rubber gloves. It's not bad IMO . Thanks for the tips Jonathan.

All of the LSG offsets can hold water to become a water smoker, and that is primarily what the valve is there far. I use my offset 90 percent of the time with water in it, and even when I don't, I simply hose all the gunk off and down the drain. Clean up is a breeze on these smokers.

    • @Texas2.5
      @Texas2.5  6 років тому

Smoky Ribs BBQ & Southern Cuisine That's a great point. I forget that because I don't water smoke with mine, though I'll experiment with that at some point. Do you keep it fired up for an hour after cleaning to dry it out completely, or not really worry about a little rust in the belly?

I'm also using a plastic type brush. If you have a weed burner and hit the grates afterwards it makes those leftover bristles glow red hot which makes it easier to find and remove them.

That yellow bristled brush you have is a great alternative usually about every 2-3 cooks I'll use my brush which is the same style as yours but mine is blue,
Anyway I bring my smoker to temp and give it a good quick steam cleaning with light sprays of water from my garden hose, while scrubbing the grates with the ball valve wide open to keep it as fresh as possible, then I reseason the pit before the next cook. After months of use I still don't have any problems using the brush. Great channel Bub, you just gained another subscriber.

It's an awesome cooker. My few "complaints" are so small, they're really just suggestions. Minor improvements can be made, but out of the box, this is an awesome offset. I'm doing projects around the house today with no worries about temps whatsoever while the ole' LSG puffs away on 30 lbs of pork butts. Such an enjoyable smoker!

Hi I had the same problem one time what I do is pressure wash just when they are too bad and need deep clean but I dry them up with a towel and spray oil to it the when time to cook in the process to hit the pit the oil stick to the grill again and every time you are cooking again cut a big onion in half stick it to a big grill fork and pass it throughwhike the pit is hot.
Put litle pressure that will keep the grill clean to and ready to cook

They make a grill brush that has shorter nylon bristles similar to what you have in the video. The shorter bristles make it a little more stiff for cleaning the grates. It also has a flat scraper on the reverse side for heavier gunk. I'm pretty sure I picked mine up at Lowes.

Simple fix for your drain, first thing I did when I got my LSG smoker. Take the valve off, replace it with a 45* elbow, a 6" pipe nipple, the valve, and then another nipple. I put a cap on the end, but it's not really necessary. The valve is out from under the smoker and the perfect height to put a bucket under it. LSG could include this setup and add $10-20 to the price and make it a whole lot easier on the customer.

And bristle ingestion is a real thing. Sadly. I've found onions + tinfoil work well enough for me for cleaning the grates. I'm not licking off them and everything on them spends long enough to not worry about bacteria.

I actually sold it to make way for my LSG Mini - but I did not wash it out after each cook. Actually, rarely did I ever wash it out and the longer I owned it the less I wanted to introduce water into the equation. A plastic paint scraper once everything has cooled down gets the sludge out of the bottom pretty easily and leaves the metal seasoned. I still use this method on my mini.

    • @Texas2.5
      @Texas2.5  6 років тому +1

I did get it, because the charcoal grate is the first thing to burn out on any offset cooker. It takes a ton of stress from the hot coals and expands and cools more than any other spot on the cooker. However, I am not sure it is necessary. The 1/4" one is still very beefy. The 1/2" one might be a little overkill. It is very heavy, probably 45 lbs.

Hi Jonathan! I actually came back to this to buy exactly that thing. Thanks for linking it. I do have one question...When you rinse out your smoker with water and drain it into this, what do you do with a giant bucket of diluted grease???? Thanks!

      Awesome! I'm glad it helped.
I have a spot I can dump it nearby so it's pretty easy for me.

@ Texas, you might give the Weber Heavy Duty Scrubber Pads a try. I use them to clean the normal round rod grills but they might work for expanded metal grills also. Here's the Home Depot link for them: www.homedepot.com/p/Weber-Heavy-Duty-Scrubber-Pads-with-Handle-W146/300512634 . I find the handle useless and just use the pads. Only $5 for 3 pads and they last. Thanks for the video. Good luck.

$3000 for a smoker to save a couple bucks on some pipe fittings. Do it right instead of using hack plumbing parts (that shouldn’t even be sold) that will melt with hot grease and drip because of the corrugation trapping grease.

There's no reason to be spraying water inside the smoker or have water inside it. You are just making a huge mess and creating work. Use that little metal bucket you have there, put a kitchen trash bag in it. Clean out the firebox and put the ash in it. Then put the bucket under the drain and open it. Scrape the grease and junk put a putty knife down the drain, the ash will absorb the grease. Close the drain, wipe up excess with paper towels and toss in the trash can. Done...Easy....

These pits are designed to cook with water in them. It provides humidity. Some of the best use water in there cooks (Aaron Franklin and Myron Mixon).
Any time I’m doing a brisket or a butt I use water as well.

Nothing against using a water pan. But no need to fill the bottom, and make a huge mess. I also am not convinced Chris at LSG is very good as designing pits. These new designs look to me to have drafting issues.

I don’t know. I have the traditional 24x48 offset from LSG but everyone that has these models seem to love them. You could be right on the draft though.
I do fill the bottom with water and outside of providing humidity on Long cooks, it makes clean-up a snap. Just got dry and oil afterwards.

@@SOLDOZER A year in. I still don't water smoke, but I can tell you there's nothing wrong with the draft on mine. My most recent video thoroughly details a brisket cook and the performance on the LSG 20x42 is rock solid every time I use it.

Man, you think you got it bad? I have to watch every one of this guy's videos at least three times thru while editing!

No disrespect but I just think that the LSG is too much of a high quality product to put a plasticky component on it. I feel as if you've tainted the value that just looking at a LSG gives.

Wow it's amazing that lone star grillz didn't use flattened expanded metal! That's trash! Not just trash , TOTAL TRASH!
