In the case of this anime it bombed hard in japan that it threatened bankrupcy so I feel like we didn't lose anything for this specific dub. But I see what you mean, japanese and english have completely different backgrounds and roots so it's pretty hard to translate every small detail. We can get a fair amount but in the some things don't get through unless you speak the language (including those that learnt it as a second language, though it's not guaranteed to elicit the reaction it wants from them).

This dub was so popular that it was translated into Japanese for that audience. They'll certainly miss out on the American references but the dubs humor hardly relies on that.

For anyone wondering why the English dub is so very different compared to the original, stems from the very poor feed back it got in Japan. When this came out as a manga/novel it was very well received by the fans and did very well so Pierrot and Aniplex gave them a 20 episode contract for the anime. However the anime did not do so well and was put near bottom of popular poles of anime at that time. During which in the 2000's when anime was doing well in NA such as Dragonball, Inuyasha and others, they licensed it to ADV Films in NA. When they did so Noriyuki Abe and the company gave free run of the English version to ADV Films which deiced to ad-lib the series or abridge in other words.
Well, you have a whole collection of abridged series - Hellsing Ultimate, Mlrai Nlkki (Future Diary), Dragonball Z, Yu-Gi-Oh, Fate/Stay Night, Sword Art Online, and others...

Younger males are often voiced by females cause their voices are naturally higher, its a common practice in japan and in the united too. For instnace Timmy Turner is voiced by Tara Strong, Naruto is voiced by Maile Flannigan, and Ash Ketchum voiced by Sarah Natochenny. Boys voices are still high and squeeky when young so its not like the japanese voice actors could deepen their voices without making it sound weird.
@@Toneill029 i think that the practice of voicing younger boys by girls, specifically in dubs, tends to just sound more off to me than a 40 year old voicing a young boy. one of the biggest reasons i actually tend to watch dubbed is subs use female voices more often and i get a dissonance between character gender and vocal gender. i think its better to just have someone like Chris Patton voice hajime.

As lackluster as the script in the Japanese version, it did have some noteworthy VAs like Ryusei Nakao as Amanojaku and the late Tomoko Kawakami as Satsuki. Also the Dub for this show is really hilarious comedy abridging.
