Great video!!
Thank you!
I have to say Brent you are pumped in this one. Made me smile watching you enjoying yourself despite standing in the rain, wind and elements.
Yeah, I was stressing out about that last video going live the next day and stuff like that, then I got a lightning alert on my phone and didn't even think twice about grabbing the cameras and going. Once I got out there in it, everything else went away and we had a great evening. Even though I completely botched the sunset, which was incredible, lol.
I really love your videos man. I mean, it was recently that I found out about your channel, but little by little is helping me understand how to take better photos. I only have a galaxy s10e with me. I still struggle in day light and editing, but at least now I know what I am doing. HUGS!
Hey thanks man, I really appreciate that, and I'm so glad my videos are helping!
Desde Argentina, estoy viendo. Muy bellas fotografías, especialmente, las que se esconden detras de las nubes, y son rescatadas, por el fotógrafo.; thank you
Great photography and education, BreNt. Always enjoy your (and Camera Lady's) work.
Just don't get too "up close and personal" with the strikes!
Finally first comment love the content mate you need to head down here to Australia and shoot storms in Broome
Thanks Tom, I definitely want to go back there!!! I've only been once and it was only for a couple days when I was in the navy, so I barely even got to get off the boat, lol.
Brent, cool photos as usual. I was wondering do you not like to use a Intervelometer when doing lightning photos? for me its easier to let the camera take photos and you can watch to show. Also, do you prefere Priority mode over say Manual or Bulb mode and why?. Id love to be able to share some of my lightning photos with you to get your super valued "expertise" on them. I really want to get better lightning photos.
Thanks Tye! Yeah, like I said in the video, I usually use the built-in intervalometer to do the timelapses, but I didn't here because it was raining and I was too busy constantly blow-drying the lens. What I mod eI use will depend on the scene, the lenses, and what I'm trying to capture. If the light isn't changing too much then I'll usually use manual mode. If I'm trying to get a timelapse and the light is changing a lot then I'll use Aperture Priority mode.
Camera lady needs to make a remix type song with using your constant air blower sound! 😆
She laughed so hard when she read this comment. Especially because she thought the same thing when she filmed that part, lol.
Love this! Love to see more. Wish I am there. It's hard to predict these types of things. Can't just fly there and wait for it to happen. got to be able to respond and chase quickly. Question for you, can you stop and make setting changes in the middle of time lapses? And can you simply turn off the camera to stop the time lapse before it finishes? Thanks for sharing! I follow you for the southwest birds and landscapes. Awesome stuff!
You can stop and change the settings of the timelapses, but not if you want to use it as an actual timelapse, cause then you'd ruin the continuity of the whole thing, but if you're just doing a timelapse to get stills from, then yeah you can change the settings as much as you want.
Hi Brent, enjoy watching your channel. I've had that happen a good or great bolt strikes in between shots sometimes(hate it when that happens..........lol). I live near Benson, AZ. Not much for day time lightning. ( although I have been trying some lately(practice...lol. My favorite times are from sunset through dark until the storms are done, overhead.....dangerous......lol or out of sight).
Thanks man! Oh, yeah you're just right down the road from me, lol. I saw a lot of good storm activity in that area in the last week or two. Hopefully we'll get some more soon.
Great video Brent, never seen you so excited since you started , really enjoyed this video. By the way how high did you take your iso when shooting at night? I have an R5 also and it seems to be a bit noisy in low light. Thanks ! Rick
Thanks man. Yeah, storms will do that for me, lol. I've never had an issue with my R5 with high isos, though I usually use my R6 for astro and night stuff first, but camera lady was filming with that this time.
Get yourself the Minos smart trigger helps out a lot
your vedio is very beautiful mate, it's really amazing 👍
Hey thanks, I appreciate that!
Good stuff, Brent... I am wondering if you wouldn't capture more lightning strikes by using continuous shooting mode with an intervalometer for sequential, almost uninterrupted sequences? I haven't tried this for lightning, but it works great for meteor showers which share similar capture challenges.
Thanks man, I appreciate it! Yeah, like I said in the video, I normally timelapse the lightning, but I didn't do it this time because of the rain. I have quite a few other lightning and storm videos on how I timelapse them.
How often do you run into snakes out there in the desert? Love your videos.
It really depends on the when and where I am. Right now in my area, summer nights and early mornings are much higher chances of running into them.
Still waiting for the rain here in Tucson...
Hopefully soon!
I’m envious Brent, our weather is mostly calm here in Wales. What do you think about the risks involved in what you do?
Chasing lightning this close is always risky. I'm always well aware of the danger and try to make the best judgement calls possible for still trying to get the images, though sometimes I do put myself in less-than-optimally safe positions for the shots.
@@BrentHall well the results speak for themselves, but "be careful out there"
You gave me a few laughs Brent! Wouldn’t a lens hood stop the rain from going on your lens instead of you having to blow it constantly?
I couldn't use a lens hood there because the filter I had on was too big, and also that particular lens hood for that lens wouldn't have helped because it's too small and the rain was coming in at an angle toward the lens.
I am a professional lightning chaser and Weather Spotter for NOAA. This is a really dangerous way to shoot Storms. Newbies need to read the following. Use a lightning app to make sure lightning is not within 30 miles of you to avoid getting hit by lightning. Blitzortung or lightning pro are good apps for that. If it is within 30 miles of you please shoot from within your car which will afford you some protection from a lightning strike. Then you don't have worry about rain on your lens. Also I use windfinder app to long term predict when storms are coming and how to avoid dangerous derechos. If you are going to shoot sever storm pick a location where nothing can blow at you or fall on you. Also Rain Guards for your cameras are a thing if you are standing out in it. Will mention if you are shooting in the day light hours use of a Lightning meter that attaches to your camera can avoid missing good shoots. It will trigger with movement or light (aka first leader) and that triggers the shutter. I don't live in the greatest spot for storms Lake Michigan protects my area and I primarily shoot at night only. flickr.com/photos/photographyof_peggysue_zinn/albums
Brent, maybe you should get an EOS R, they're relatively inexpensive now and you'd get higher resolution than the RP. Of course of you got an R6 you'd have less resolution but better autofocus and likely better low light capability, but more expensive than the EOS R which would be higher resolution than both the R6 and RP. Unless you're waiting to get another R5? The shots you got of the lightning were great. I'd use a corded remote shutter release, but don't let it dangle because if the wind catches that then that will cause vibrations and blurring of the photos. Most people find wireless shutter release devices are unreliable with the wireless signal, in theory being wireless prevents any vibrations in the camera body/lens but if it's unreliable then what's the point? I've been thinking of getting the Sigma 105mm F1.4 and 135mm F1.8, those might have been good in the low light / night conditions keeping the shutter speed faster and ISO low, but perhaps you wanted the flexibility of a telephoto zoom lens?
I had an R, for about 5 days, lol. I originally got the RP as a vlogging and backup timelapsing camera, but since I recently started only filming in 4K, I can only use the RP for stills and timelapses. I definitely would have used my R6 instead, but camera lady was filming me with it. I'll probably get an R7 (mostly so everybody will stop asking me about it, lol) and maybe another R5 or an R3. The RP would have been fine though, if I would have just set up the timelapse and let it go. I should have just done that and cleaned the lens as needed while it was running.
Been there some days your timing is just off lol
Your videos are good but they always freeze on me no other videos do it just yours so I'm done here unfortunately
Sorry man. It's not likely an issue on my end as I've never had nor heard of others having that problem with my content. I hope you find some better creators/videos out there. If you like my stuff though, you could find me on Ig @lightbendersvisuals. You shouldn't have that problem with my images... :P
