    Excellent shots. I was hoping the storms would move more toward the Phoenix area.....I'm still waiting. Does using neg. exposure compensation affect just the bolt of lightning or the whole picture? I have had many unusable blown out pictures, I had not even thought about using exp. comp.

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  2 роки тому

      If you're in manual mode you can just underexpose, but yeah, if you're in aperture priority or one of the other semi-manual modes then you can use the exposure compensation and it will work the same. It does affect the exposure for the whole image, not just the bolts, which is why I said in the video that if your camera doesn't have that great of DR or a decent sensor for shadow recovery, that you could just take another shot and expose for the foreground, then blend them in post.

    Excellent photos. I wish we had storms like that but I certainly don't want the firest fires living in such a remote place. I guess I'll have to go on vacation to the prairies in Canada for a couple weeks during what might be good stormy weather. Yeah, going up to the highest topographic point out even on a ridge line very close to a storm, not the best plan... but those are the risks in chasing thunderstorms.

    Another awesome video...I guess ill have to plan my vacation next year for NM. I thought I knew enough about taking lightning photos, but everytime I see one of your vids I learn sooo much more...Im curious what is the max lens you use for your photos?...i currently use a Sigma 20mm 2.8 art lens...but have used 100mm 2.8. I also use 18-25 1.8 DC lens.

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  2 роки тому

      Yeah, NM is a great place to explore, especially for photography! Not sure what you mean by max lens? If you mean by aperture, then the fastest lens I have right now is my 35mm f/1.8, which camera lady used to film this video, but I also used it for a couple of the still images from the video.

    Great video, Brent. I was browsing your equipment and noticed your favorite astrophotography lens is no linger available. What would you replace it with? I’m currently using an EF 16-35 mm f/4 L on my R5 and am thinking of replacing it with an RF compatible lens.

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  2 роки тому

      I've actually been using the 16-35 f/4 a lot for astro with my R6 and R5. It does a pretty good job. The 15-35 is great too, but really expensive. I use the 35mm f/1.8 quite a bit for astro as well and I really like it. The rf 16mm is a lot better now that it has the lens profile corrections in adobe, and it's really cheap.

    What do you mean when you say hot pixels? And when you turn the stabilization off, you only turn off the lens stabilization.

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  2 роки тому

      Hot pixels look like dead pixels, sometimes when the sensors get hot individual pixels start doing wonky things. They usually look like red, green, or blue dots in the image. They're pretty easy to clean up in post though. So in the Canon mirrorless world, when you switch off the lens stabilization it turns it off in camera too. Not sure why they do that, but it does.

      @@BrentHall you don't find that it causes you to miss lightning strikes? There seems to be no way of not having a 1 sec delay between shots, which is really bugging me.

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  2 роки тому

      @@MartinFransson Yeah, I definitely miss strikes sometimes, but that's usually more during the day. 1 sec interval is the shortest you can go, at least with Canons, but that's fine because even if you could go shorter, if you had longer exposures then your camera would start skipping exposures to give it time to write the images to the card. Then you'd miss a lot more strikes.

    • @MartinFransson
      @MartinFransson 2 роки тому

      @@BrentHall wouldn´t the risk of skipping be higher if you used shorter exposures? With long exposures there´s plenty of time to write to the card :) Also, when I´ve been using a wired remote instead, there is no gap between exposures and I have never had a problem with buffering. I find the 1 sec makes it impossible to use the built in timer for daylight timelapses of clouds and stuff like that, because then I might want to take 1 or 2 images per second.
