really like how you broke down all the different sizes and their distinct uses. I bought a fenix pd35 tac comes with a holster, intend to carry it with me every day. I want to get my wife one of those smaller ones to edc. I should get my in laws and parents one of those bigger lights to keep in the house for things that go bump in the night. Great video!
@sootch00 your 100% correct on the flashlight being your number one defensive tool. i never was the one to edc a knife or flashlight, but from watching you and nutnfancy i have come to see the importance of it. i edc my benchmade auto presidio and a surefire e2d defender 200 lumens. thank you for opening my eyes to the importance of this.
I worked as unarmed corporate security for years and I carried a Fenix TA-21 for the reasons you described Sootch. Good video and I highly recommend the TA-21 if you ever get the chance to check one out.
You're absolutely right Sootch, a flashlight gives you OPTIONS! When I purchased my first EDC Mini Maglite (6.5 inches,) I had self-defense at the back of my mind. I was later talking to an RCMP officer about this and she confirmed that part of their training includes their issue security flashlights in hand-to-hand fighting (besides their Tasers!) Since then, I've thought a lot about flashlights and body pressure points. I carry my Maglite in a fast access chest pocket in my ScotteVest.
I'm old school and for years have carried within reach a 5- D cell Mag-light in my truck and when camping. With 5 D batteries, it is very heavy and the aluminum case is very solid for whatever you may need to do with it. And it puts out a bright wide or narrow beam to a great distance. The Mags are a way to get around some places that would make it illegal or at least questionable carrying a baseball bat or axe handle etc in your vehicle without just cause.
Very good point! As Sootch mentioned, with batteries inside, the flashlight has extra weight and momentum when swung at an attacker; the presence of live batteries maintains the light's status as a tool...a useful one at that - after asking me for my Maglite and Leatherman multi-tool to repair a badly jammed office printer, my red-faced collegues never made fun of my EDC gear again! :-)
For those of you who prefer old school, you can get aftermarket high intensity LED kits for Maglites which put out a crazy amount of illumination. The LEDs are also less likely to break when used as an impact tool or club. I got mine off ebay and they are pricey but worth it.
Great vid Sootch! Just to clarify a couple of battery points. 15:34 One would use a 18650 vs 2 x 123's IF the battery tube is sized for 18650 which are 18mm diameter. CR123's are 16mm. 16:05 CR123's are lithium chemistry, not lithium-ion. Big difference. They're double the voltage so twice that of an alkaline AA cell. A single CR123 light can produce over 2x the lumens of a 2 x AA alkaline light. CR123's have higher energy density. EDC size is important & most wont carry a 2 x AA torch.
I like your flashlight reviews. I purchased a few from Going Gear due to your reference in a previous video and love the large selection. Thanks for the great video!
I've been a Maglite guy for ever, didn't realize their were so many choices for flashlights with very high output of light. My old ( Ancient ) 3 D Cell Maglite I used to think was super bright, then I got the XL 50 that out shines the big one dramatically. Now I'm looking into new LED's and the options seem endless. And you were right, bought a Energizer Pen flashlight last November for work, carried it everywhere, used it almost daily! Amazing how a little light makes life easier :)
Thanks. I know there were a few reports of people using cheap 123A's (that were purchased off of ebay) that were leaking gas inside the body of the light. When the light was activated a small "explosion" would occur with some people reporting minor burns being the result.
I think i'm going to pull the trigger on that Jetbeam. I was pretty impressed with it in your other review. I think the new bezel you showed sealed the deal though. Thanks Sootch!
I got one of them Olights. I don't carry it as much now during the summer, it mostly resides in our motorhome, but during the winter i carry it in my pocket every day.
Last time I flew, I carried a AA mini Maglite with factory lanyard. Makes a great Kubaton and flail weapon with the lanyard. Now I always carry a crenulated LED Nebo flashlight.
Keep the AWESOME video's coming!!!!!!! You're video's are loaded with great info alot of which I put into practice where I can where it applies to what I have. I am pretty new to the "Prepping" world. The info you put out there for us normal folks is great. Thank you !!!!!!
I've had one problem with a 4Sevens product. And it wasn't the flashlight that was at fault (AFAIK). Two years ago I had a battery explode/swell and get lodged in the body of my Preon 2. I only discovered the problem after I pushed on the tail clicky, broke the gas seal, and heard a hiss. I rinsed out the body, and cleaned the tail and head the best I could. No major damage from the battery acid. It's been running fine for the last two years - as my EDC light - no issues at all.
Father-in-law just bought me one of those small led mag's and it is a sweet little light! I can survey my property pretty well with and on the brightest setting, its actually a little too bright for searching inside the house for things...have to switch to the dim setting.
Bought my dad a Maglite XL100 LED light a couple of months ago to upgrade his everyday lighting options. For ~$26 USD online it is a great deal, North American-made and the lighting is excellent for the money. Also, lmao @ swinging around the c-cell old-school mag lite and hitting stuff. Those things are righteous! I converted my old 2x D-Cell mag lite to LED and keep it in the home as a defensive option. The CR123A-driven options are damn tempting, though, due to shelf-life issues.
Good video. The front serrated edge is more than just hitting the pressure points. If you push it into any soft flesh and twist, that person will immediately let go of you
Can't agree more Sootch! I carry a Fenix PD20 everywhere i go and use it literally every single day. It uses the more expensive cr123 but i believe the older model that i have puts out 160 lumen (the new ones are 190 lumens i believe). It is an expensive light but it will be the last one you ever have to buy! Great video!!!
Here in Australia we can't carry a feather duster. I so envy the USA for being allowed to defend yourselves. Here I could be imprisoned just for carrying a knife. Yes long live the republic and thanks for your review and information.
I noticed you indicated your large Maglite was a C Cell. I've never seen a C cell version. I have a large D Cell that holds 5ea. It took me a long time, but I finally found an led light replacement to insert in the flashlight. I've never tested the length of burn, but I suspect it's a long time on D cells.
Most people that have knowledge in modern led lights don't use Surefire anymore because compared to new brands they are expensive, not as bright, and don't have as many features. I have heard they are very tough though.
Im not too sure about the pressure points in a fight. Seems like it would give someone more motivation to harm you more seriously and faster. I have a streamlight stinger led hp, I bring it to the movies. There is definitely potential with a really bright light to either escape or disorient an attacker while you proceed with offense
Had to use my flash light "torch" once and left a good imprint in someone's forehead and it bought tears to my attacker's eyes and stopped a serious fight.
+Elevation Station Productions I've definitely enjoyed my MagLite for years, but after the LED dome failed, I upgraded to a Convoy L6. I couldn't go back from a large light, and the performance and quality of the Convoy is leagues better than the MagLite. I'll always remember my MagLite fondly, but I'm also very happy and impressed with the caliber of product you can get for under $100.
maglights are pretty much indestructable, i have one i found in the middle of the road early one morning, it was all beat up and probabl;y run over by multiple semi trucks and it still worked! i figure some cop must have dropped it and had to book and not realized he forgot it
The people who say that a flashlight makes you a target should talk to security or police and see that ppl who work these professions would totally disagree whole heartedly..........99% of the time the criminal will run away when lit up in a dark area than shoot or confront you.
I'm a police officer in Houston. And I can tell you that a flashlight most definitely makes you a target. That's why we are trained to strobe the light manually and never leave it on.
I have been lit up by police walking home from work at night and i can say that with a very bright light like a lot of these larger lights are now you can't even see the vehicle they are in let alone the person holding it, you might be able to fire randomly in their direction but it's 50/50 if you hit anything.
Thanks for making these videos. Just as I'm in the market for a multi purpose light for fishing and perhaps a gun mounted light for cyote shooting, you make all these flashlight vids. If you have any recomendations I'm all ears (or eyes because I'll be reading) Thanks again keep up the great work.
Just bought a Monster light to go with my 4sevens and my Fenix and let me tell you the Monster is a 320lumen with a rechargeable 18650 running a Cred R5 it's amazing. $45 for the light the battery and the charger as well as shipping
Great review. I use to always carry my maglite xl50 but the thing I didn't like was the button kept getting pushed in my pocket so my pocket would glow. If I didn't loose it though it would still be my option. Best part is it ran on 3 triple-A batteries so nothing fancy.
I meant to say the lumens output of these new pocket sized LED lights have such great blinding potential and still fit in a pocket or purse; that is their best asset, not that little crenelated bezel. 320 lumens can really blind some one for more than 30 seconds at a range greater than contact distance.
Hey Sootch, I don't think they issue Maglights to officers anymore. For the reason you mentioned, they do some massive damage when used as a baton. But I could be wrong....
I don't think you can have too many lights. I use a 4Sevens Maelstrom G5 when I work security and its great! but I find I go to my 4D cell Mag-lite around the house the most. Great Video!
ATAC PLx Flashlight. Decent light output 69 lumens, very slim. only 25 bucks on cheaper than dirt. I've got a lot of other, more expensive, higher output tactical lights, but this one is always on me because it's so easy to carry. and because its relatively inexpensive, i've bought several, in my car, on my motorcycle. great when walking thru a dark parking lot.
Sootch, searching the internet for such a video! Happy you put this one out, since I can not carry a firearm I looked to a tactical flashlight option, tk15 was my first purchase. Would you recommend any other options Thank You!
Yeh torches...I like the idea of taking the smallest two there and modifying to extreme output. With about 150 lumens for the 'micro' , and up to 1000 lumens with a 3-mode circuit board and led mod.,believe it or not with the 2nd smallest there, and the Warrior also. Go Maglite, too.
What are your thoughts on EagleTac ? They are based out of Washington and make qaulity lights. I just picked up the new G25C2, it can compare to the Olight Warrior lights..
Im still loyal to the Maglight, my dad has several and he gave me 2 of them when i was younger and i keep one next to my bed at all times. One of my friends dads' is a cop and he told us a story where he was able to break a lock with one of those maglights.
i carry a streamlight PT2aa and a streamlight microstream, i also have 2 maglite 3 cell led lights, they r 30 bucks at walmart and have an 87 hour runtime which is y i got them, and i have thrown it into a pool and let it sit there for half an hour when it was on, and it works fine, i carry one in the door of my car and keep one in my backpack, i like it so much for the runtime and the baton aspect u were talkin about
I know a cop that was no longer allowed to carry one of the giant flashlights because he kept hitting people when he was in fights and getting complaints
If people can sneak in a bag of twisters into a movie theater they should bring there side arm. As long as there is no metal detectors it's better 6 than 12. *Hypothetically* speaking
My EDC torches: A Leatherman S2 and a 4Sevens Quark AA2. Both are in my EDC bag (Maxpedition Fatboy) The S2 is a backup and the Quark is the main. I use them several times a week (and still people ask me why I carry them around - sheesh. No one asks when they need my help, though :P )
One inch wide crenulated bezels are no good for 'pressure points', they are good for hammering and cutting the head and face. Put the flashlight in your fist and try and use it to hit with. Most lights are either too small to be used as a weapon or too large to be carried. Five inches is about right but most are only four. EagleTac make the P20C2.
Dude I love flashlights and not just the cool tactical one's. I'm taken about the crappy one they hit you with at the register when your pumping gas, lol I just love them. I;m the tactical light guy but man if I see a cool light it's coming home with me....
I litteraly was sitting and fondling my Maglite XL50 when i clicked on this video. I bought it to add to my EDC after the Colorado shooting. In tear gas with chaos and gun fire, against body armor, thats a hard enough shot. To do it in the dark? Waaay harder.
part 2, beyond his striking range, making him see stars that might give you time to simply get away. The blinding force of these new pocket sized LED lights that in the 320 and higher lumen range have great blinding potential. Would you expect a woman and/or non physically trained/prepared man to get within striking range of an assailant just to dig at them with a crenalated bezel. Better to simply say blind them and get to the nearest next defense point, behind a door, to your car, etc.
hey sootch just wondering looking for a good mix of weapon light and defensive light in one package any thoughts was lookking at jetbeam rrt-21 have you played with these at all?
What was the second light? Product name and company and online purchase. I’m a property manager of a large facility and for many years I have always carried the Leatherman thanks ~M~
everyone should carry an atleast 200 lumen light on them. like i show in my video. lights do deter crime. i have 4 bright lights on the front of my house. my street has not street lights. my house shines on many of my neighbors lights. love your vids bro. thanks for accepting my vid responses by the way.
man that searchlight is a modern day caveman club. I had an old 5 D maglight when I worked security I spent way more on batteries than the maglight but we were not allowed to carry batons. I have three 4sevens AA square flashlights spread around house, one right by the glock but I had not put as much thought into the defensive weapon aspect. I carry pistol almost everywhere and dont go many places CCW not allowed Thanks for the video!
In Sweden we're not even allowed to carry knives, so this is really important to me.
What about a fleshlight?
There are regulations against using those in public. :-)
I call mine 'Mother'.

Just got my second Zebra Light. One for the Jeep and one for EDC. Zebralight SC600 Mk II L2. 1100 Lumens hurts like hell. Self tested, self approved.
I worked as unarmed corporate security for years and I carried a Fenix TA-21 for the reasons you described Sootch. Good video and I highly recommend the TA-21 if you ever get the chance to check one out.

C-cell lights throw extremely well. You get the added bonus of strobe while it is flipping around.
If anyone's wondering, I've bought from Going Gear before (with Sootch's code). Great service and great prices.
Thanks, Sootch! Vid rocked, as always.
Great video. I just picked up a Maglite XL50 so far it seems nice. You don't realize how much a light comes in handy.
I think i'm going to pull the trigger on that Jetbeam. I was pretty impressed with it in your other review. I think the new bezel you showed sealed the deal though. Thanks Sootch!

Here in Australia we can't carry a feather duster. I so envy the USA for being allowed to defend yourselves. Here I could be imprisoned just for carrying a knife. Yes long live the republic and thanks for your review and information.
nothing to see here A good midsized light is our best option right now. Maybe an umbrella? Or a walking stick could work 😂
Can you carry pepper spray?
Those are some super nice flashlights!!! Thanks for the video sootch! Very informative!
Glad you have lanyards on your lights makes pistol reloads easy when your light is attached to your wrist.

I suggest you consider the Guard Dog Diablo Concealed Flashlight/Stun Gun. It’s a 6-7 inch tactical flashlight with a built-in stun gun.
Had to use my flash light "torch" once and left a good imprint in someone's forehead and it bought tears to my attacker's eyes and stopped a serious fight.
We have LED MagLites now!
YAY!
+Elevation Station Productions I've definitely enjoyed my MagLite for years, but after the LED dome failed, I upgraded to a Convoy L6. C cell versions are pretty common. When I first started in police work I carried one as my "car searching" light
My EDC light is a surefire E1B with a Z68 tail cap, works great.
I have a Fenix RC15 and an Olight SR90. I prefer flashlights you can charge in the wall socket with the battery in them still.
maglights are pretty much indestructable, i have one i found in the middle of the road early one morning, it was all beat up and probabl;y run over by multiple semi trucks and it still worked! i figure some cop must have dropped it and had to book and not realized he forgot it
In Singapore, we can't even carry chewing gums. So this is very helpful for me.
+secretsquirrell13 Will having a Flashlight make you a target?? Yes it will. But they certainly have a place in self defense.
I have been lit up by police walking home from work at night and i can say that with a very bright light like a lot of these larger lights are now you can't even see the vehicle they are in let alone the person holding it, you might be able to fire randomly in their direction but it's 50/50 if you hit anything.

Nothing quite like a heavy flashlight that temporarily blinds your opponent and can then be used as a billy club.
I don't think you can have too many lights.
I use a 4Sevens Maelstrom G5 when I work security and its great! but I find I go to my 4D cell Mag-lite around the house the most.
Great Video!
Oh, and I made de comment as a complement tough. Excelent video Sootch, I wish I had your knolodge on tools and defensive/offensive equipment.
Really like the your videos.I l feel the same way about flashlights. You are right about fending off bad people with a powerful light in their face.
Yeh torches...I like the idea of taking the smallest two there and modifying to extreme output. With about 150 lumens for the 'micro' , and up to 1000 lumens with a 3-mode circuit board and led mod.,believe it or not with the 2nd smallest there, and the Warrior also. Go Maglite, too.
also i always wear 5.11 taclite pros and the maglite rides perfectly if u put it threw the utilitity strap and then into the back pocket
What are your thoughts on EagleTac ? They are based out of Washington and make qaulity lights. I just picked up the new G25C2, it can compare to the Olight Warrior lights..

Thanks you brother. I look for new vids of yours all the time. Thanks for all the good info. God Bless brother.
has everyone forgotten how easy it is to just kick someone in the balls instead of using your flashlight for " presure points "
I've been carrying my Glock 78 just about everywhere I go.
I also just recently just added a Maglite 6D to my EDC.
So I think I'm gonna be prepared!
In my EDC I have a Streamlight PT 1AA that I love! It's great little flashlight.
101% agree. Since can't own a gun yet, my mode of defense is a Tactical Flashlight with Filipino Martial Arts and Tactical skills.
Sootch I bought a jet beam pa-10 and love it. I use it everyday thanks for the vid
Quite a collection of flashlights you've got there;-)
One inch wide crenulated bezels are no good for 'pressure points', they are good for hammering and cutting the head and face.
I;m the tactical light guy but man if I see a cool light it's coming home with me....

part 2, beyond his striking range, making him see stars that might give you time to simply get away.
" It's Better than Nothing " Amen!!
The pa10 is just a bit larger than the pc10 with the lanyard in this vid..it's a great little light
Do u have any opinions on powertac flashlights? they seem high quality and have lifetime warranty. Specifically powertac warrior.
After the Energizer blow up I switched to using Eneloops in my Quark AA2 and my Preon 2.
hey sootch just wondering looking for a good mix of weapon light and defensive light in one package any thoughts was lookking at jetbeam rrt-21 have you played with these at all?
What was the second light? Product name and company and online purchase. I’m a property manager of a large facility and for many years I have always carried the Leatherman thanks ~M~
Liked the video very informative but didnt catch the name of the second smallest light with the lanyard. Can someone help me out?
I use rechargeable CR123 batteries all the time, good stuff.
You can tape the batteries in a Maglight to negate that rattle.
have you done a vid on the xt30 i thinkit may be the next flashlight i get
13:08 XL 50! Mine broke and i'm sending it in for repair today, still a great light.
I just got the g25c2 myself...it's a dandy light. best hundred bucks I've spent in a long time.
any particular reason you do not use surefire products?
what brand name batteries were you using?
Why is it assumed that we know what EDC means? My guess is Every Day Carry. Is that right?
+QUABLEDISTOCFICKLEPO You are correct =)
Great idea, you are the light master.
everyone should carry an atleast 200 lumen light on them. like i show in my video. lights do deter crime. i have 4 bright lights on the front of my house. my street has not street lights. my house shines on many of my neighbors lights. love your vids bro. thanks for accepting my vid responses by the way.
Great, informative, video. Thanks!
is it possible to sharpen the front ring of the lamp??
thats a good idea
They tear the shit out of your clothes right out of the box. If you sharpen it, they'd go right through your pocket in a matter of days.
Your right about using your light first...good vid brother!
The Atlantic Aquarium will not appointment guns or knives inside.but did allow me to carry my klarus nt20.
i carry the ultra fire mini can you do a video about those? they are good lights at a bargain price
my Fenix ld20 crapped out on me, now i need another great edc light. the ld20 was the perfect edc
man that searchlight is a modern day caveman club. I had an old 5 D maglight when I worked security I spent way more on batteries than the maglight but we were not allowed to carry batons.
I have three 4sevens AA square flashlights spread around house, one right by the glock but I had not put as much thought into the defensive weapon aspect. I carry pistol almost everywhere and dont go many places CCW not allowed
Thanks for the video!
Nice video, friend. And great points.
Does anyone know the model or possibly the specs on the light he labels as a security light?
What was the name of the fourth and fifth flashlights?
