  • The most frequent comment Tractor Time with Tim has gotten lately is "Why did you trade Johnny for another John Deere 1025R". TTWT explains his reasons for trading our 2014 JD 1025R for the newer 2018 model JD 1025R. TTWT tries to answer all viewer questions about trading Johnny through Cortney at Good Works Tractor.

    I wanted a little john deere tractor going back to the 2305 days. Your channel help me justify buying one. I've had my 2018 1025r for a year and couldn't be happier with it. Thanks for the great Videos

    "The concept of a 1025R was not even in their thought process until they started watching our videos" is true in my case. I began watching your videos about a year ago, and was amazed at the possibilities. I've been researching for the last year, and finally bought a new tractor that's arriving tomorrow. Even though it's orange, it was your channel that provided the inspiration.

    Having operated numerous JD tractors the only thing that will keep me from buying one is that they won't switch over to the universal quick attach on the loader which is so much nicer to use and also opens up so many more options for aftermarket attachments for the loader. I checked out courtneys web site and he does have some great deals and seems like a real good guy and I will say both my local JD dealerships could learn a lot from him about customer service.

      Jason E that setup adds weight so you would loose capacity. For most people they won’t mind the basic pins.

    Thanks for all of your videos. I have been using an old Yanmar for years. While it is a great tractor, it is probably older than many of your viewers, and I could not pass up the Kubota 0% financing. Even having used a tractor for years, I have learned a lot from you and some of the other tractor channels. I hope to share my hard earned lessons someday.

    There is an old logging trail going up the mountain behind my house. Lightning hit several trees and they fell across the road. The people that owned the mountain (I had permission to go up it) had a 4 series JD tractor but it was too large to remove the trees from that narrow road without tumbling down the mountain. The 1025r can easily maneuver on the road. I had removed the trees in less than two minutes. The owners were very pleased of what I was able to accomplish.
    This is a major advantage between the smaller 1025r vs the larger tractors.

    • @TractorTimewithTim

    I bought my 2018 1025R last year and started looking for UA-cam sites to school me on my, “Johnny”. That’s when I ran across your site, but of course you had the older model. Nevertheless, your site was an excellent place to learn what ANY small tractor could do. I am thrilled that you have the new Johnny and I look forward to seeing what you uncover that I didn’t even think of.

    Another great video. This should clear up all the questions😊.
    Glad you stayed with the 1025R, it is a great machine, (as are most of the sub-compacts). Amazing what you can do with one. I have a small property but a bunch of projects that include planting, moving heavy items and excavating. I did some calculations on how best to proceed. I started getting prices to have people do it for me, renting machines to do the projects myself and be rushed to limit rental or buy something and be able to work on things at my own pace. After doing the math it was cheaper for me to buy something to do the work myself and sell it when I was done, (to be honest- not likely to sell it, will just find more projects😁). This was the math I used for my finance committee to approve. People talk about cost on John Deere but I got my brand new 1025R TLB with the thumb, wheel weights and forks for under $20k. With the way these machines have held there value I found the overall cost of ownership is actually lower with a JD.
    Keep the videos coming!

    Thanks for the videos Christie. Oh you too Tim.
    I bought a 2038r because I just had to have the horsepower for the stump grinder and tiller in the thick Georgia red clay. To be honest I would have been gone with the 1025r except for the stump grinder. But I do love the extra R features on the 2038r. I love the auto throttle. That should be standard on all tractors.

    When I was in the market for a new small tractor with a loader and backhoe, I was looking at other brands. It wasn’t until I started watching your videos that I knew the 1025r was the tractor for me. This 2022 model has over 50 hours on it and I’ve dug over 400 feet of trenches so far. Plus hauled away over 60 loads of debris.

    I understand going for the newer 1025r. I went from a 2305 (which was great) to a 2018 1025r. nothing was wrong with the 2305, I just had the chance to update and did. the 1025r is great and maintenance is easier. I personally have had no mishaps with the new rops I'm 6'4" tall and clear it ok. In some cases it makes it easier to look up and see in close spaces. The only thing that has my attention on the 1025r is the constant position correction (jerking) of the 3 point. my dealer says its normal but i dont remember the 2305 doing it so much. Any input on that issue? Thanks for the great vids Christy and Tim!

    One thing in purchasing a tractor for some of those not purchasing yet is the weight factor. You need to have more weight for lots of things like lifting with the bucket, grapple or forks. Because a small tractor does a lot of things does not mean it will do all you expect it to do if it is too light. A mower deck option is not a reason to buy either because a stand alone riding mower is better.

    ROPS. WARNING! The old style did not have this inherent danger and you need to also check with your dealer and make sure they did the recall update for the ROPS system. What the issue is that is a serious danger is that it can cause you to flip completely over backward easily if you catch it on something. The OLD rops was relatively straight which meant if you hit a branch or building overhead, while it would lift the tractors front end off the ground, it would slide off once a certain angle was reached. With the new ROPS fully up, now if you hit something, it 'grabs' it and if something like a big tree branch or wire, it literally forces it DOWN ONTO the back of the driver! Thus instead of releasing it eventually, it pretty much causes the entire tractor to go vertical and if not stopped fast enough, over backward.
    This is because the ROPS is angled now forward OVER the head of the driver so instead of an object sliding off eventually, the object is literally pinned and slid further down onto the driver.. and at a certain point because the object can't slide off, the tractor WILL flip over backward if you do not stop quick enough.
    I wrote directly to John Deere the second day I owned mine because this literally happened to me.. I was not used to such a high bar and angled forward like that.. I went under a major tree branch thinking it would clear and instead caught it full on .. The front of the tractor was nearly vertical by the time I could stop.. It destroyed both light mounts and pushed the branch down onto my shoulders as it slid down... I got damn lucky.. About 4 weeks or so later after I contacted both my dealer and John Deere about this, I got an official recall notice for a change/update to the rops system.. My dealer picked up the tractor and took care of it right away. So be VERY aware that this new design is extremely dangerous if you catch something.. and if you are a new owner as I was at that time, remind yourself that you have to really watch that thing when you go under something.
    Today, I keep the rops down completely and only raise it when I am using the loader now or when mowing or doing something on a steep grade.

      When did this happen, and what was the "fix"? Thanks.

    • @Malakie
      @Malakie 5 років тому +1

      the very end of summer 2017. I had just bought my tractor and it was one of the brand new 2018 models they gave me because there were no older models in stock or made any longer. I was a new owner. And the second day using it, that happened to me so I contacted both my dealer and John Deere per them.. It was the next spring, 2018 that I was sent notice of a recall and engineering repair by John Deere. I called the dealer, they confirmed and came and picked up the tractor immediately and took care of it. I don't know specifically what the actual fix was but I remember them saying something about mounts for the ROPS system.. I am thinking they are supposed to 'break away' under that kind of condition but they did not. Visually whatever was changed is not noticeable at all.. I see no visual difference. So far I have not 'tested' what happens again LOL.. But I assume it would probably be the same result or worse if I did not stop in time to keep from flipping over backward. Tim needs to raise his bar so he can show in his video the difference for everyone. It is a major difference and why they went this route, is beyond me due to the danger if you run into something because it can't 'slide' free like the old design allowed.
      One other note.. there was ALSO a second engineering change to the tractors.. Mine already had that one however.. That design change is for the mounting bracket under the hood for the air cleaner intake host and connection.. Tim will probably have his already done as well. Tim made a video about the old way and how those brackets constantly broke apart.. JD did change the design and fix it.

    • @Malakie
      @Malakie 5 років тому +1

      They did replace parts. I just don't remember now exactly which ones. The recall said something about re-engineered 'bolts' and attachments and when I talked to the dealer, they said they think the parts are designed to 'break away' under that kind of stress now. Kinda like what we had on US Navy warships where certain top deck mounts and gear was designed to break away to keep a ship from capsizing. That makes sense.. you would rather have the system mounts break then allow the tractor to flip over backward.. which is exactly what almost happened. If the rops does break away it would release the tractor allowing it to come back down on its wheels instead of flipping. The dealer said the parts replaced would be the logical thing for that and those are what they replaced per engineering from John Deere.

    I have seen one major difference between my 1023e and your 1025r.. So far they are identical but in one regard.. You have the knob between the legs in front of the seat for the hydraulic adjustment. Mine does not have that. It is a small knob under the seat on the right side instead on mine.. Odd that the tractors appear to be otherwise identical but for that one thing... The 25r also had a couple more horsepower if I remember right as well, or is that the same as well? I can't remember off the top now.. Actually just looked it up.. That is one difference, the only others are the 25r has a couple more horsepower to the engine and about 2 and a half more PTO HP. Due to those the 25r has more displacement thus higher torque but you do weight more as well, which is actually an advantage too. So not a lot of difference but for me, the 2 hp difference has not really been a noticeable thing for everything we do.

    • @Kryten428

    • @Malakie
      @Malakie 5 років тому

      Ahh true.. Every one of us all missed another major point too.. price. ;-) My setup has nice LED's mounted on the upper light brackets out of the way (if you look at one of my recent videos I posted, you can see how it is setup), I added a 12 vdc power outlet to mine for $1.50 off Amazon and the tilt steering.. for me not an issue at all since I would not need it or use it. Once I set it in my truck, for example when I bought it 5 years ago, it has not been moved or touched so tilt for me is not really anything I think of. I do wish the 1023e had the hydraulic knob down between the legs though because that sure as heck would be more convenient than where it is now.. I can adjust it still, just can't see it while I do it.
      One other thing I added to my tractor.. Out here I am very very rural and you would think that means if you have to ride on or cross a road it would be more safe.. Not really.. Because we are out here, people tend to drive whatever speed they want.. Being it is also extremely wooded, visibility is not that good either in areas where there are not farm fields. In bad weather and at night.. really bad.
      So I added a yellow beacon LED emergency strobe to my setup as well for visibility.. It took me a while to figure out how the hell to do that because there was no good spot and running more wires all over to run one, would be a pain in the ass. I came across a D-Cell battery operated strobe and bought one of those.. It has a magnetic mount as well so no wiring needed.. The first I put on the top of the rops bar when it is set down flat to the rear. And I know now that that light HAS made a difference, especially in fog and snow.. I had a drive tell me they had no idea I was at the top of my driveway a few weeks ago in the snow.. I happened to be turned sideways to them and at the last second all they saw was a yellow strobe beacon to tell them someone or something was there.. as I turned, of course my other lights then showed up brightly but apparently the beacon is all they could actually see at first.. When he stopped to let me know he said he had no idea I also had a second plow sticking out the back until he actually walked up.. He said in the low visibility that was not visible at all.
      So I just bought a second of those beacons and it now is put on any 3 point I attach to the back of the tractor.. right now being a the second plow I have hooked up (seen in the latest video I have up).. I wondered if these battery operated versions were bright enough but apparently they are and so far I have not had to charge the batteries for either of them since I got them, including the first one I have been using since about November.
      The second sits on any implement that is hooked to the 3 point. So I get two fold visibility help.
      Here is a link to that video for you to see my LED white lights and mounting setup (watch to about 3:48 time to see the one strobe on the plow attachment.. ua-cam.com/video/yLlJI5vccwc/v-deo.html
      Here is a closeup of the LED lights mounted: ua-cam.com/video/gODjVr2Z1KY/v-deo.html
      Here is a link to see the strobes I was talking about on the ROPS bar.... ua-cam.com/video/Lt4n2LfwpRY/v-deo.html You can see I tried different strobe patterns in this one to see which gave the best for visibility both on the ROPS and on the blade.

    Hey Tim, I enjoy your videos, and you've saved my bacon a couple of times with my 2015/2016 Johnny. I have a problem and want to know should I get rid of my Johnny? Someone (not me) spend an afternoon driving my 1025r around the neighborhood, using it more like a go cart than a tractor. Unfortunately, they did this while the parking brake was engaged. The result is now the parking brake does not hold when engaged, and I suspect the brakes are shot also. Although the pedal still seems to stop Johnny, I suspect it's the hydraulics slowing the tractor. I attached the front end loader and now drop the bucket when I'm on any incline to stabilize the tractor. Any ideas what damage may have been done?

    I just had the dealer do the 50 hour service on my Mahindra 2538 TLB. And I came home with my original 12” bucket bucket as well as a new 16”. I enjoying the digging. I know you will like the 2 seat method. When I’m working on digging a new trench my wife will sit in the front seat and when I’m ready to move she will drive forward. It saves a lot of time. I believe your new and previous Johnnys’ backhoe is hydraulic powered instead of PTO which like mine makes for quicker movement.
    I know the hydraulics leak by normal on most equipment. I would like to see a video on how you store your backhoe when not attached. I imagined someone designing a frame to rest it on so when you are ready to reconnect after sometime the backhoe is still in the same position and quick to line up to and attach. I believe your backhoe is a frame mount design as is mine. I see great new videos in the future. The instructional videos say on my tractor reconnect takes less than 10 min, I spend a solid hour or more trying to get all lined up and repositioned.

    Hey Tim,
    I see a lot of 1025R, I decided on a 1023E because of price, nearly the same capability for more than $2000 less, very competitive. Unlike you northern guys, I don't do a lot of operation at night (light package), cruise control (I've used it maybe 10 times in 16 years on my other tractors GT235 and 445), and the PTO hp still seems like enough to do anything I want. But I will say, I do covet that beautiful deluxe seat very much. I think when seat goes bad, I'm be looking for a 1025 seat for sure, just couldn't justify the $2200 extra. There may be one or two other benies that I didn't cover. Mainly I want to say, the short time I've had the 1023, it's been great. It's bigger than the 445 I had, but still functions pretty well in the yard without tearing stuff up. I was really concerned about that, but my concerns were unfounded. The major difference between the 445 and 1023 is weight, 530 lbs!!

Please understand, not knocking the 1025, as I know R models are better than E models. If the difference was $1000, I may have switched opinions.
