  • I wanted to share a quick video with some of my video settings on the Lumix S Series cameras which I use every day for wedding filmmaking, including the frame rates I use, the custom settings dial, focus peaking and why you should be using an ND filter when shooting outdoors.
    MODE DIALS: The S series has a huge variety of options for frame rates and resolutions. I like to set up 3 different settings using the mode dials on the top of the camera to switch between my settings depending on the scenario. Saving my three most commonly used settings to C1, C2 & C3, I can quickly switch between my 3 favourite settings of 25fps 4K (C1), 50fps 1080p 10 Bit (C2) and 4K 50fps (C3) in a second.
    50FPS & NATURAL PROFILE: I shoot mostly in 4k & 1080p 50fps, I prefer 50fps over other slow motion settings as I find it’s slow enough to add a cinematic look without being too slow compared to 120 FPS. I love shooting using the ‘Natural’ picture profile on the S1 & S1H, as I find it has the perfect balance of pleasing skin tones, dynamic range & low light performance. I tweaked this Natural picture profile to reduce the saturation, sharpness and contrast so that I have greater flexibility in post production and that the image isn’t too sharp. My settings are Saturation -3, Sharpness -3 & Contrast -5.
    SHUTTER ANGLE: When shooting video I always want to make sure that the shutter speed is double the frame rate, so or example in slow motion shots at 50fps, I make sure my shutter speed is 1/100 to maintain a cinematic motion blur. With the S1H, I can simply enable the ’Shutter Angle’ feature set at 180º so the shutter speed will calculate this for me whatever my frame rate.
    FOCUS PEAKING: Using a focus controller on my gimbal combined with the S Series amazing Focus Peaking, I’m able to maintain complete control over my focus point or quickly switch to face tracking mode with the focus dial when needed, for example to track a bride coming down the aisle. When shooting in manual focus, I stop down my aperture and try and maintain a steady distance between myself and my subject.

    Ciao Russell. For the wedding video I choose to shotting in v log in day light whit iso native low 640. In low light native iso 4000 is terrible because is to much noise. I try natural profile modified (gammut settings) and in the low light is very good profile. Wend the wedding day is in the open area I think it possibly to shotting in v log but inside to church with no good illuminated, v log iso 4000 is not enough to record good images whitout noise. Thank for your beautiful lut. Now I go to sleep because tomorrow I have wedding day in the Dolomiti Italy 🇮🇹. Ciao

    Hi there, Russell: Thanks for the video. Regarding the audio, you mentioned you would use a shotgun mic to cut down on echo, but you absolutely should NOT use a shotgun mic indoors in a room with lots of echo. That will pretty much RUIN your audio. Shotgun mics are really designed for ooutdoor use. Instead what you want is a cardioid or hyper cardioid pattern mic. It won't eliminate the reverb, but it will do a better job on cutting down. But ultimately, a room needs to be "treated" acoustically to help remove the excess reverb. If you can hang up any blankets you have from racks / light stands / backdrop stands outside of the camera frame to absorb sound that would go a long way to cutting down reverb. Also put blankets on the floors or other hard surfaces if possible. Hope this helps and look forward to watching more of your videos.

      Thanks Dave! Since this video came out I actually started to work more with V-Log and actually really prefer it...! The Natural profile is good for low light, tho. Oh, and the light - I can't remember where it's from but I Googled 'bronze tripod lamp'... it's my kitchen!

    Hi Russell - thanks for sharing your settings. I'm looking at buying the S5 just with the kit lens for content creation. I'll generally shoot at 50fps in 1080 although Ive heard the 1080 on the S5 isnt the best. I really love the design of these S cameras. Im currently Nikon but none of the Z cameras backup video so Ive decided not to buy one.

    • @richardwills5703
      @richardwills5703 3 роки тому

      @@RussellKentNicholls I'm looking into Cinebloom now as well. I like that they are separate and diffusion sits under so you can transition relatively quickly going indoor. The other consideration is that I have a Sigma 14-24mm on the S1 on Ronin and will only accept rear ND so I'll have mismatched footage - unless I purchase another prime for the ronin. I have 85mm and 50mm and the 14-24. Do you have any suggestions for prime wide?

    • @RussellKentNicholls
      @RussellKentNicholls  3 роки тому

      Yeah that’s true. I find that annoying about the 14-24 so I usually shoot like f/6 if I’m outside. So I don’t have any wide primes, only 35mm is my widest actually, sorry. I tend to shoot 35/50/85 but maybe a 24mm Sigma L mount would be a good option.
