Thanks for the video impression. You were bang on about our intentions and what we wanted to do. Because we are a smaller team we had to trim stuff like a map or video PDAs, etc. Plot is there, it'll be in the PDAs, and in episode 3, on the walls that you can kinda read. Loved that you spotted the soda can flavors, I put weird stuff in there like that to see if anyone notices :D Cheers
A doom 3 clone isn't something I expected out of the old-school fps renaissance but I'm cool with it.
And _Industria_ is a gender flipped and modified Half-Life 2 clone.
The old school renaissance is what killed Doom 3, so I'll take anything doom 3-like I can.
Doom 3/Prey/Quake 4 are my most favorite games so I am more than happy.

Am I the only person that likes the flashlight from doom 3? Sure it was contrived but it made certain sections really creepy

The flashlight from Doom 3 was a way of showing off the shadow/shading engine of Doom 3, but it also had a gameplay effect, forcing the player to micro-manage light and think tactically about luring enemies into more well lit areas so they could blast them. It was a clever mechanic overlooked by idiots that just wanted to "run and shoot".
I love it! I think it still makes Doom 3 interesting and unique. I don't even like the later versions that let you use the flashlight all the time

Also liked this demo a lot, I recently played through Doom 3 and I've got to say that Retchid felt like it had better retro level design, Doom 3 is much more linear and has very few looping areas, and the secrets are also kind of lame in Doom 3 for the most part, but Retchid has more satisfying secret hunting in the OG Doom/Quake vein (I see you didn't find the secret plasma rifle, hint, look for a vent in the dark behind an explosive barrel after meeting the big boys with swords and flintlocks) and because of the whole rec room savepoint thing they make the levels have thing looping quality where you make shortcuts back to your savepoints which is always a small dopamine hit.

i'd really fucking love a video about narc (2005) as so few people have covered it. same with the resident evil-style men in black game -- it's quite obscure (especially for a film tie-in) and the graphics were hell of impressive at the time plus the terrible will smith soundalike they got is pretty funny

Dude I was just trying to explain to some friends the kind of look this game and FEAR, Quake 4 and Condemned have, and had no idea how to describe it in a way to make sense! I absolutely love that graphical look right as 7th gen consoles were making there way in.

Why did they name it like it's a 2002 numetal album?
Doom 3? DOOM 3?!??! Doom 3 was a linear disaster of a shooter. This nothing like that. Not in style, not in visual design, not in gameplay. Just look at the level design here, you will find NOTHING of the sort in Doom 3. There are tons of games taking place on a spaceship or on a space station and you do not call them Doom 3 clones. This is much more close to System Shock 2 style games with the pda system and the design of the levels. This is a serious sci-fi horror game that is as promising as Selaco or Routine (if it ever comes out).
I also like these weird 2003-4 graphics.
Hard shadows, bump mapping, single light sources.
Deus Ex 2 and Thief deadly shadows do it really well

Heyyy I played that demo. Funny you mentioned the food because a few screenshots for my video game food facebook page is really all I got out of this demo. And sometimes that's enough, you know?
its like you ctrl+c'd my mind, i would add thief 3 to that list, they were very meticulous about normal maps in that game and it shows (a personal favorite).
Doom 3 always gets a bad rap. Great to see at least a few other people liked it enough to make a throwback game like it. Needs Super Turbo Turkey Puncher though.

Here's an overly-cynical question, could nostalgia-bait harm indie gaming in some way? Just been seeing a lot of "it's like what we played back then" indie games recently and while I started out very enthused this seems to be becoming more and more of a trend, surpassing the genre-specific confines of the term "boomer shooter" and just kinda proliferating the industry at large whole as AAA devs fail to live up to past expectations.
Idk, maybe people can just enjoy what they wish and it's just some bizarre Catholic-guilt going on in my head that says the good thing bad, actually.
I feel ya. My enthusiasm has taken a major hit after trying out so many derivative demos. Way too much remember "suchandsuch", well our game is just like "suchandsuch", going on. I played Trepang 2's demo and it just seemed like awkward FEAR. Retchid just seemed like awkward Doom 3. I'm hoping they'll be more novel mechanics added so they seem a bit more unique and fresh.
It's already ruined most of Hollywood... fortunately the video game world is far more diverse and with a much smaller barrier to entry that such a thing couldn't happen.
@@jeremymurphy2787 the main problem I see with all these nostalgia games is that all of them are jank, it doesn't help that I can bet most of these are unity games that use basic templates for gameplay and never refine them. I tend to avoid 3d indie games because they all have the same jank feel, last one I played was daymare and I felt like I was controlling a noodle trying to do anything and don't get me started on enemy AI.
Basically, nowadays it's ridiculously easy to create a playable homage version of your favourite childhood games with a small number of people.
Genuine creativity is truly a rare thing. Even then, a lot of rare ideas are rare because they're not good.
I'll bet in 25 years time there'll be a huge wave of Indie battle royal games lol.
Jank is a good word for the feel being off. I couldn't even bother finishing the Agent 64 (awkward/jank Goldeneye) demo. I have nostalgia for these games for sure but these modern impersonations aren't the same.

I have heard the evolution of this grimpressions intro song through the episodes once you changed to the black and red logo it seems to have been fine tuned to perfection.
