  • After lots of research on chicken management best practices, we decided that we wanted to design our coop after the Carolina Coops builds. We incorporated the deep litter method, chicken level egg door and chicken ladder along with lots of ventilation and open run space. In this video we try and document how to build the version we built.

    I think I’m gonna try cheap and linoleum to line the inside of my coop with and see how that works. Your coop looks beautiful and I’m sure your girls are gonna love it! 🐓🐓🐓🐓

    I like these coops, but I love the ones that integrate the feed storage so you’re not having to haul their feed out there every day. I am older, and I tend to zone things to make it easier on myself

      Integrated feed storage could definitely be a perk in situations like yours. For us, because our barn is very close we decided it wasn't worth the extra size and building costs. Having a well designed coop for your needs really makes chicken keeping a joy!

    Great video and explanation. I’ve been watching several videos on the Carolina coops trying to figure out how to make one for myself and this video has been a big help. Thanks so much.

    Our dogs REALLY helped keep predators away from the property. The Aussie was a great territorial lil beast.

    Thanks for the great video. I love the look of the Carolina coops, unfortunately we can only get the really cheap coops here in Australia that are basically crap. Hopefully I can build one of these similar to yours.

      The design works well, After a few years we have only made one slight modification and that was just so we can open the door with a foot of snow on the ground

    I am halfway through a build and picked up some great info here. I’m stuck at the double doors. Did you ever make a video about how to make the doors with the ventilation door?

    Hi Sue & Ryan! We really enjoyed your great tutorial. We have a Little Homestead in central Virginia and after endless hours of research found the Carolina Coops the best design. We almost ordered the American Coop 6x12. They are super busy and it would take several months to get to our order. Also, they are quite expensive (of course, craftsmanship is great, then there is shipping, it all adds up). So I came across your videos which we want to use as a guide.
    Could you give us an idea on roughly how many day/hours it took from start to finish? My hubby is very handy with tools and I will help a lot.
    PS. We have the mandatory dog (Golden Retriever girl) who is super helpful!! 🐓🐓🐔😉

    You did a fantastic job.
    Do chickens roost in the run way up high on those beams that made the triangle with the rafters? Carolina coop usually block off the triangle with plywood to prevent them from roosting up there.
    As for the hay kicking out of box, I noticed CC has a 3-4 inch tall board in front of the box.
    Awesome DIY job.

      We had one hen that would roost up there but not to big an issue, And yes we added a 1x4 across the bottom of the roost box and it made a huge difference.

    I am building a coop and it is on very uneven ground. I ran 4x4 redwood for the base, and made it level, so at one end the 4x4 are almost 8in high off the ground. Then I started filling the gap with concrete that also holds down the predator screen. As that gap grew bigger, I realized there was no reason to keep the base level !! Only on the coop house itself, which the slope didn't change much. For the run part, you can step down the base and just using taller studs to level the TOP where the roof is. That is only what matters, not the base. It is probably best to also make this step at one of the 4ft marks so the screen doesn't have to zigzag down the stepped area.
    Just wanted to give a tip to your viewers.

    Hi there, I might have missed this in the video but is there any reason you went with the torx screws (toe screwing) vs nailing (toe nailing) for the general framing of the coop?

    Hi there! Y'all did a great job! My husband and I want to build a coop based off of Carolina coops as well. Love their design! Our issue is we have zero building experience lol. Do you think this is doable for us? My husband is pretty handy/smart, but again, we don't have experience. Any chance you made building plans/instructions for this?

    • @aroundthehomesteadwithsuer3497
      @aroundthehomesteadwithsuer3497  2 роки тому +2

      We did not make plans but I suspect you could follow the videos for sure. If the two of you can operate a skill saw and drill you should be able to take your time and work through a project like this. Just remember to start level and plumb and stay as close to level and plumb as you can but at the end of the day try and have some fun doing the project, take a lot of pictures to remember the project and know the chickens will be perfectly happy even if it doesnt come out flawless.

    How did you make the double clean out doors with the removable hinges? I am making a coop with this same design and was wondering what your plans were, it looks like it worked well for you!

    • @aroundthehomesteadwithsuer3497
      @aroundthehomesteadwithsuer3497  3 роки тому +3

      We didn't worry about removable hinges so ours is just regular hinges. We could do a more in depth video on the doors if its helpful?

    Looks great!! How many chickens would this coop hold? Thanks

    • @aroundthehomesteadwithsuer3497
      @aroundthehomesteadwithsuer3497  2 роки тому +3

      This coop was designed for 15-20 chickens. We currently have 14 but we don't free range them much due to predators so we don't want to over crowd. We do make sure to provide lots of interesting snacks/activities for our birds to help keep them entertained in a smaller space because free ranging is limited. They love to dig through wood chips, most foods you would compost(not rotten, but things like greens off radishes, carrot tops, lettuce centers) or even a couple shovels of dirt to scratch through.

    I’m planning this build and using your materials list. I see you have 85 2x4x12’s ? Is that accurate? Or did you mean 85 2x4x6’ which would be half?
    I’m fixing to buy the material and I don’t see the 85 12’ 2x’s in the design.
    Thanks for the great video and the great ideas!

    • @aroundthehomesteadwithsuer3497
      @aroundthehomesteadwithsuer3497  Рік тому

      We used about 58 12 footers, but we did use them liberally for trim and stuff. I think if one was on a budget they could probably thin down the materials more than we did

    Two things:
    First, excellent job on your coop and a very informative video.
    Second, I have to ask you how long it took for the egg to break in your pocket😁

    • @aroundthehomesteadwithsuer3497
      @aroundthehomesteadwithsuer3497  3 роки тому

      We currently have 16 which is a very comfortable number. I think I would keep it around 20 if I were to add more. We only have one rooster so that helps reduce potential conflict. If you were to free range you could probably have a few extra but most of the year we can't really because of snow.

    How many birds will this hold?

    • @aroundthehomesteadwithsuer3497
      @aroundthehomesteadwithsuer3497  2 роки тому +2

      I think the rule of thumb is 1 foot of roost bar per bird, I suspect this could hold 20-30 birds if you wanted. We have 16-18 and it stays clean and has no smell
