  • A video of a standard American chicken coop by Carolina Coops. Matt discusses the features of the American Coop and how it differs from a Carolina Coop. Although there are differences, the construction is still the same high quality associated with all Carolina Coops chicken coops, with premium lumber, half-inch black PVC coated hardware cloth, pocket screws, 3 bang egg hutch, plenty of ventilation in the henhouse and a covered run.

    You mention using an oil to help seal and prevent the wood from rot. FWIW ~ mineral oil never dries and is not ideal imo. linseed and all other flaxseed oils turn rancid over time ( check the back of the label on olive oil along with others}. If you want something that is water resistant, anti bacterial to prevent rot, non toxic , does not emit harmful voc's or gasses, will never crack ,chip or peel.Food safe even ,eaqsy to apply and cheap. I would strongly suggest using 100% pure Tung oil. ~ Some history , it is used and has for centuries as a cooking oil in the asian cultures. In the USA ,up until about the 1980's it was used to line the inside of tin cans to prevent the ingredients from reacting with the metal can (soup cans). The great wall of chinia was not all constructed of stone ,there are parts of it that were actually made of wood . They used what they had in the particular region during its build. It may come as a surprise , but there are parts of the wall built of wood. The only wood preserver used was 100% pure tung oil ,these wooden structures still stand today. Your coops are very well made along with the design and functionality. very impressive & informative . Thanks for sharing .

    So do you have anything practical for areas like Maine. We get a lot of snow. So would they just stAy in the roosting section the whole winter

      We have many clients that live North, including Matt the owner of Carolina Coops. Our coops provide shelter from snow and cold rain, but the chickens never just stay in the henhouse in the winter. We sell our run storm shields that screw onto your run and are made from polycarbonate(Like our windows). That helps keep out snow that may blow into the run or cold, windy rain and sleet out of the run. But chickens do much better in the cold than they do in the heat. Thanks for watching.

    why does it cost so much and you leave the wood bare and not finished. that wont last long outdoors.

      We leave the wood unfinished for the customer to either paint, stain, or seal. When we do turnkey installations, we do that for the customer. Thanks for watching.

    How many chickens will you recommend for this coop ?

    • @CarolinaCoopsVideos
      @CarolinaCoopsVideos  4 роки тому +1

      We recommend about 16 chicken maximum with free ranging in this coop. There are two 6-foot roost bars, and we prefer the 1-foot per chicken rule, but most chickens are fine with about 10" on the roost bar. Hope that helps.

    The best part about assembling one of their coops is that they'll send you directions that only apply to part of the coop. You'll get to figure out the rest on your own. I bought a coop featured prominently on their website but they sent directions that applied to the first 4 panels only. You would think for $20K they would send the exact directions you could follow step by step but I'm in the process of figuring this out on my own.

    • @canardsalle7731
      @canardsalle7731 Рік тому

      20k is right. Maybe that one is closer to 8k but I built an exact replica of that one for myself and it cost 1,500 for all the materials.

    • @slayermill8621
      @slayermill8621 Рік тому

      @@canardsalle7731 I don't possess the carpentry skills to figure that out but I can follow directions well and they provided basically none for the Carolina style coop I bought. I figured it out and got it built and don't get me wrong looks great, but for the price it wasn't worth it due to how difficult it was to assemble. There was probably about 600 pieces with little direction about what goes where. I was also shorted pieces so had to craft a few with my limited carpentry skills.

      It is, plus it provides shade, however, our chicken coops are made like a house and able to withstand harsh weather. And we always want to create a natural environment on the run floor, just like in a forest. These customers were going to free range their chickens.

    • @CarolinaCoopsVideos

      Here is the price of our American Coop, plus it also has extra options if you are interested. The ground needs to be level for the coop. All our holes are pre-drilled, and we try to make assembly as straight forward as possible. You need only basic tools to assemble, nothing too fancy, but an extra hand or two makes it easier. carolinacoops.com/shop/american-coop/

    I love these Carolina Coop videos. Matt has had such enthusiastic videos for years.
    One question, on the removable doors....how do they keep rain out? There are large vertical seams that are along each removable panel where water can get in. Am I missing something there?

    • @carolinacoopsservice7306
      @carolinacoopsservice7306 6 років тому

      big321danger Im not sure what you're referring to about the vertical seams in the doors. Please clarify and Ill be more than happy to answer!

    • @big321danger
      @big321danger 6 років тому +1

      Thanx for the reply. Referring to the left and right side of each removable panel. Also where the hinged doors meet when closed....and also where the hinged side of each door meets it's respective hen house wall. Seems like rain would enter the hen house in those areas.
      It must not be an issue since you don't mention rain entering the coops in any of your videos. If it were an issue you would have already accounted for it. I'm just overthinking it. LOL. Thanx again.

    • @carolinacoopsservice7306

      The only time we have had rain soaking the hen house is when the removable doors are left off by accident in the rain. :)
      Thanks for watching!
