- See another video of 765 from 2017 in Chicago: • NKP 765 doing 50+ MPH ...
This excursion from Chicago to Janesville in 2016 was authorized to go 70mph on Metra South of Rondout, where this was taken. Sure looks like the crew has got it going that fast! Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society and Metra put on the excursion, and it was exciting to see. - Наука та технологія
You know she's steaming really good when she's running that fast AND blowing off on the relief valve.
Wait a minute 765 is a female?!?!??!
Samu the Hamu studios there all female due to there temperament
Maybe she’s just going downhill lol
That was the whole deal with the superpower limas, big big biggg firebox, she'll make all the steam you need all day long
Something that big and strong is a he, not a she
When you’re late for work and you’re on your final strike.
Showing the true power of a steam locomotive without a diesel
Diesels are dead weight on steam excursions (powering the cars and extra braking power)
@AllAboard!!!
No.
@AllAboard!!! Just stop
Stop the drama everyone
Stop the drama everyone
Most a Amtrack locomotives can't pull that many cars with a single engine. She is a thing of beauty.
A diesel could pull that on one traction motor you nitwit..GP28's push 70 cars in our yard all the time.
Robert Heinkel and strength
Put this beast on the NEC
Amtrak
And ya hear that? I don't, she's pulling it with no torch.
And she's doing it on her own!
Very impressive. Long train and no diesel locomotive support at the end too.
Berkshires are beautiful steam locomotives.
Polar Express 😜
Kai Friedrich
That’s Pere Marquette 1225.
I agree
Indeed
@@AngryProtoBoi yeah, but it’s still a berkshire
so awesome to see mainline steam do trackspeed!
I agree! Glad I got to see it. It looks like there is a lot of good footage being uploaded of this trip today at spots where they were really moving.
Steam locomotives are an embodiment of mechanical poetry! I LOVE high speed steam!
And able to lift the boiler safeties at 70mph. Amazing...
We had just throttled back from a top speed of 72 at Lake Forest and were just about to set the air for the crossovers at Rondout when the safety valve lifted. The truly incredible thing is that she just wanted to go faster and faster!
@@slorznovitch It sounds to me like the NKP Berkshires could potentially be too fast for their own good. What was the maximum speed the running gear was balanced to handle?
@@blackbirdgaming8147 The Berkshires were built for high speed freight service. They ran in the 70s regularly on freight trains.
All steam locomotives are potentially "too fast for their own good". They will, if not properly controlled, destroy themselves. The faster they run, the faster they want to run. Even if that means exceeding their design limits.
Thanks for sharing this great H/D Video. With up to 60-mile per hour speeds, and no Diesel helper.
4501trainman *70*
@@thewolfpack2584 no. It's not
Jim Herbert Outdoors yes it was. We broke 70 that morning headed to Janesville and topped 74 on our return.
Wide open, pulling a long train and she was making more steam than she could use. Good old made in USA technology!
Just imagine zipping along through the countryside watching the farms go buy on that in 1905.
That crew is having fun in that cab rn
It was all business in the cab. We were all 100% focused on the task at hand. Absolute professionalism every step of the way!
Damn. That was crazy fast.
Now just imagine if they open it up completely
@@gesitiwadengaming9873 Then 765 would be really be flying on the rails at high speed
That's the fastest I've seen 765 go in any video.
It's his maximum speed
Was hitting something like that when she was on her way down to St. Louis for an expo and we drove down to the crossing on the old Wabash east of Ivesdale IL to watch her pass. Was pulling about 20 cars.
Wow, I am glad to see you preserve some vintage trains in America, too. Nice footage. She pulls many coaches, impressive.
0:23 me when I find out I’m going to a railroad museum.
When the train is oncoming the speed of the train looks deceptively slow. The train doesn’t appear to be moving really fast until the locomotive’s position is almost equal to where the camera is located. Oncoming speed with trains can be very deceptive.
I had to watch it more than once! Great video!
The old gal can still show what she was built to do! Nooo problem!
That's a cool, awesome, piece of machine. Brings back memories when I was just a little boy back in the late 40s early 50s
The 765, 3751, and 844 are perfect examples of how steam trains operated in their prime. Sure, they’re old, but they’ve still got life in them.
The fact that the safety was lifted in the video is great. The steam was there in case there was any more room on the quadrant to use it.
What does that mean "the safety was lifted"?
the safety valve, pressure relief valve. It lifts at about the 4 sec. mark on the video and stays up. (it is that plume of white steam shooting in the air on the engineers side). Her fire was at the point where they were making steam faster than they were using it. The engine was running well, the rail and wheels had good adhesion so the engineer could keep the reverse lever hooked up and the fire was burning nicely. Always good to have extra steam in case you have to drop the reverser to climb a hill or something.
We had just throttled back from a top speed of 72 at Lake Forest and were just about to set the air for the crossovers at Rondout when the safety valve lifted. The truly incredible thing is that she just wanted to go faster and faster!
WOW! So beautiful and FAST!!!!!
I can imagine during that moment the Crew and passengers felt free.
We had just throttled back from a top speed of 72 at Lake Forest and were just about to set the air for the crossovers at Rondout when the safety valve lifted.
wow that speed remids me of the polar express
yea
Exactly!!!
NKP "high speed service"!!!!
Now introducing a life size model train of the 765!
Dang... and without a Diesel helper. It's so good to see a steam monster pulling 18 cars solo at that speed. Really impressive!
Wow, that train is going too fast, and that's awesome!!!
Wow, I love this Video👍👌👍! So far this is one of the few videos on UA-cam that I have seen where a steam locomotive drives quickly and without a diesel locomotive! Großartige 1'D2'h /2-8-4 Dampflok!!
Shout out to union Pacific for having matching cars
Unlike Union Pacifc, a lot of railroad preservation groups don't have cars of their own so they must charter private cars from various people and companies to run their excursions.
They put her 1990s and 80s number plate on her.
WOW THAT IS AWESOME !!!!!!!
When your girlfriend says she’s home alone 00:23
So true
I was surprised by the speed this train goes. In my opinion, I would say that this train is the polar express.
And to think of how many of her sisters were simply scrapped. The KP Berkshire is on of the most elegant locomotives to have ever been constructed.
Mom: The internet isn't safe.
The internet:
Great video its good to see great footage from the ground i was riding in the middle dome car and gps tracker app clocked a top speed on the south bound return trip @76mph !
FUN FUN FUN !
get your tickets for the Galesburg Zephyr while tickets are still available !
Those trips are going to be something to see, 79mph amtrak territory and on the BNSF they have to go 65-70+!
no way on an excursion, 76, 72 maybe, as that is what it was designed to do, too bad they did not have enough sales and canceled the Galesburg runs next week, so it will be back in fort wayne, but its not bad for 3 weeks ago still buttoning up her firebox, and redoing the piston rings on the waterpump, I was there when they cut it, got footage of the plastic rings being cut for it on the metal lathe, when I went there 2 thursdays ago at the hq in New Haven Indiana, and got footage of them working on the waterpump nothing super neat but its a little behind the scenes work, I will have the videos up soon once I get round to posting them.
but 70 mph is what it was designed to do with the 69 inch drivers pulling almost mile long trains by herself in the 40's and 1950's before retirement, and revival, for passenger excursions.
I think she is pushing at least 60 here in the video.
Actually 76 mph as i stated from the gps it is more than capable of that, the top speed of a steam locomotive
didn't restrict it from going fast meaning there was no governor of sorts the top speed by the manufactures were to ensure a certain amount of safety built into the design and thus were calculations ,based on piston size , stroke, boiler pressure, driver size, weight on drivers etc etc, this design was for fast freight so 80+ with a passenger train was very easy for this loco !
steam locos produce power at speed in the super power design thus used for high speed because of there capacity !
Lima Power at its finest !
I am not debating the power, I am just saying 90 without anything else on her is her top speed, but they never take her that fast anymore I was told by the guys at the shop a few years back, but 20 passenger cars is not a super small load, she has 69 inch drivers, so with the rule of thumb that its 1 inch of driver for 1 mph , would put her optimal speed at 70 mph, and I know the stories that she would pull 100 car trains at 60 + mph when she worked for Nickle Plate, but she was set up for 70, that is why I doubted the 76 mph claim.
I understand that and as i said i was on it and tracking the speed because i wanted to see what we would get up to , i didnt make the number up !
again top speed was not a limiting speed of the locomotive so yes 70mph is the optimal and efficient mph that was built into design to allow for power at speed and safety , however it could surely go faster than that !
she is more than able go more than the "top speed" however not efficiently ,
and yes 20 passenger cars is not much of a load at all for her remember this is a freight locomotive rated for freight tonnage. passenger cars dont create a whole lot of drag remember this locomotive has 4000+hp in her power curve . steam locomotive are the weakest at starting once it starts a train it has no problem pulling it at speed because it is a constant "Torque Machine and variable HP" meaning if it could start it it could pull it at speed no problem because the faster the speed the greater the hp until the hp curve flattens out which is going to be above the top speed meaning it can still pull (increase speed) past its "top speed" again just not efficiently.
i have rode in, an operated a passenger train with 20 cars (diesel) but nonetheless it may seem long for passenger train but its not as much of a drag (weight) as you may think it is ,and this locomotive has pulled 35 passenger cars on grades without any issue , i was told by another member at the shop in new haven !
which seems fitting to what i said it is a freight locomotive designed for freight tonnage so even a long passenger train would not cause the loco to have to really work hard very easy pull for her !
Beautiful train!
That’s an interesting train. I at first thought it was pulling a freight train because of those colors.
That is a really fast steam locomotive especially it is the Nickel Plate Road 765!!!!😃😃😃
Its quiet no engine rumbling just wheels and air beauty
That is what it was meant to do back in the 60's CB&Q would routinely let their 4-8-4 5632 on excursion trips stretch it's legs to 85 MPH there are some stories of it actually being pushed to 100 on a late returning trip to make up time.
this was posted on my birth day of 2016
Hey Railroad Videos, are you ready for this years high speed runs ?
it is a 1940 steam locomotive and goes faster than a modern amtrak diesel locomotive
was that a wheel slip at 0:27?
yea
Actually no that was not a wheel slip there was no power at this point, it was in center gear and very little power throttle !
oh looks like it blew off its safety valve they must have really had that thing firing, but this is what it was actually made to do, 60-70 mph runs pulling moderatly heavy freight, I thought that was the whistle at first but it would have made tons of noise if it was, by the way did you all know the safety pop off steam valve was created by a guy that worked for the pennsy yard in fort wayne, founded the kunkle valve company and the design though improved is still used today, fort wayne is where 765 worked out of er well the east wayne yard is in new haven about 3 miles into new haven from fort wayne, but its practicly a subburb of fort wayne, like aboite, and waynedale
We had just throttled back from a top speed of 72 at Lake Forest and were just about to set the air for the crossovers at Rondout when the safety valve lifted. The truly incredible thing is that she just wanted to go faster and faster!
Yes it’s like that constrained only by her wheel size and speed limits saw the footage from inside the cab running the varsity or the Galesburg zephyr looked like it was flying and it was made to do that speed and where it does it’s best addle no more till we figure out pitch with a steamer and then a diesel with her forevermore probably but with any luck we will have nkp 358 which is the engines that replaced the Berkshire like her don’t have the power but she’s a very old diesel electric Which I believe we use or was used by Norfolk Southern until about 2008 and then they got it her and donated her to us we’ve spent the last 2 1/2 to 3 years putting her back together she should be about ready to fire up on her own and run within a year we hope I do believe but we will probably have to drag her along since we can’t put positive train control on a steamer since it has a manual throttle body UPS working on something see if the FRO signs off on it
Lovely black beauty steam engine with 18 boggies. Nice vedio with wonderful showcase of diagonal track. Thanks.
Beautiful machine.
They used to flat out run balls to the wall east of New Haven, Ind to Attica, Ohio.
Nobody:
765: I am speed
Reminds me of the excursion trains in Britain.
The Norfolk and Western is it its tender like three tenders to make it look like Flying Scotsman
Wow nice long length of cars too.
Kinda a weird question but what tripod did you use?
Nickel Plate haulin ash with a helluva consist and no pusher
I'm just gonna say it-- Trains are fucking awesome.
idk why, but Nickel Plate Road loves to burst those safety valves.
DOC! THE RED LOG’S ABOUT TO BLOW!
When you late for work
SHE IS GORGEOUS!!!!
Great title
This is his maximum speed, although most big steamers could reach more than 100 MPH.
NKP ran their berkshires to 90 or more at times. For every inch of driving wheel diameter you get 1 mph + 10% depending on balancing (765 has 69" drivers). N&W J's could break 100 mph of 70" drivers.
Hurry! Hurry! Hurry!
jesus christ that thing moves! O_O
never underestimate one of Limas finest berks
I wish they try Pere Marquette 1225
Steam locomotives will forever be the coolest machines in the world. Especially when they're moving.
Please upload
Not bad for a 40 year old berkshire
0:23 when your late for work.
2x speed
Dammit she ain't playing🚂🚂
I wish she was going fast when i rode her in september
Question.
How does one become a mechanic for these locomotives? Is it an apprenticeship or is it like a class for let's say regular mechanic you gotta take?
Go volunteer at a railroad museum close to you that has a steam program
What if 1551 can visit the Chicagoland in the future?
Eso si es veloz y más en un tren de vapor.
You suppose the Varsity and the Joliet Rocket are some of the fastest trips a North American steam locomotive has ever ran in the 21st century? Fast in terms of high speed.
I’ve seen video of UP 844 going 75 mph though I’m not sure how old that footage was,
Thank God for steam locomotives and the folks who bought them into existence...
NKP 765 can carry lots of carriages and freight without the help of a diesel locomotive
What’d they do for head end power?
There was a HEP generator car that powered most of the train. A few cars were using their own generators.
Meep meep!
train kinda looks like the polar express
It almost looks like it is going 30-80mph
Spectaculaires
Bruyants
Voraces en energies
Quelles etaient belles
Nos cheres disparues que sont les locomotives a vapeurs
Going frame by frame to count the wheel rotations I'm seeing about 4.5 revolutions per second which totals 270rpm and given her driving wheel diameter of 69 inches equals about 55.39mph in the shot. Not quite 70mph.
Well damn, I'd like to see a real 75 mph run then.
80 mph and she goin back to 1955
I Nice video I just subscribe to your Channel!!
Talk about horsepower, ssssssswooooooooshhhhhhhh!
Very fast
did she not have her own set of coaches? i honestly hate seeing them pulling random coaches stuck together like that...
I like it
70mph and no diesel behind her!
*i a m s p e e d*
was that 611's auxiliary tender?
I think so, and it had 611's consist. Maybe that's why it was running. Prison isnt nice to steamers
yes. but the tender is back with the 611. and the 765 will have another one soon. it's in the shop being fixed up
I was turning I think 8-9
How fast was they going ive seen this train going actually 90 one time because i was in the cab one time on a cab ride i bet if they had it going alot better on a very very straight away track i bet it could do 150mph if the engineers worked at it hard enough to open the throttle truly wide open and not letting up on throttle and make it go booming along 150 mph with throwing enough water in the boiler and coal into the boilers fire box without blowing it up it be just fine that it will go 150mph that be the fastest a steam train has ever went on a land speed record with a steam locomotive with no problems with the 765 if the steam locomotive NYC 999 can make a 112mph land speed record and that was a 4-4-0 locomotive. That went 112 mph so i think the 765 can keep up with the NYC 999 at full throttle
0:23
Currently has 765 likes not gonna like so it stays that was
