    Thanks for the review. I'm recovering from having most of my gear (canon) stolen...and was considering waiting for this to come out, but scored a deal to replace my Canon 70-200 II in pristine condition for $1300..... Reckon I'm set.... but also just got a camera to use everything on, and the new 150-600 G2. My Canon extenders weren't stolen. So, now I need to get busy seeing how the Tammy works with my two extenders. I hope it will be OK..... if not, I could probably sell my 70-200 for at least 1500 and the extenders, get the tammy 70-200 and both extenders...... doesn't make sense, tho, as the canon 70-200 is simply awesome..... excuse my personal story, but appreciate any comments from you or anyone here.

    This is why I love your channel. This is a photographers photography channel. Damn near every other channel is just a bunch of fros, and fedoras, click bait, gear sniffers, dumbed down elementary school garbage, half ass reviews sprinkled with TV quality production, either that or their bad failed used car salesman trying to get you to buy garbage.
    Keep up the good work.

    Thank you, thank you, thank you, Ken! My 70-200 G2 just arrived. I've literally only shot with it for about 10 minutes on my Nikon D610 (yes I know you don't recommend it, but it's what I have), and HOLY SMOKES! This lens is amazing! Sharp as a tack, the focus is fast, and the VR is incredible!

    The VC is crazy.. complete sharp images at 1/60 of a second at 200mm

    Thanks for the reccomendation. You have not steered me wrong yet. On your reccomendation I bought the Tamron 100mm f2.8 and the Nikon 200-500mm combined with the Nikon 500 for wildlife. In both cases I cannot express the extreme happiness I have been with your reccomendations. So once again I am going with your advice and will be buying the Tamron 70-200 G2 as quick as I can. I know I will be anle to use it for many things but I am really looking foreward to teaming it up with both my D500 and D600 to see which will be better for me when photographing the tennis tournaments i am so fond of.

I would like to see that as I'm really on the fence on getting the old VC version vs going all out with this new one. IF you didn't have any would you buy the old and save some $$$ or splurge for the G2?

      Dan Hi Dan, Just so everyone understand I in no mean undermined Ken exquisite expertise. Depending on what you shooting,if your shooting sport yes go with the G2 it's more up to date plus it has more futures "like focus tracking" for a few hundred bucks- if you shooting studio portrait the G1 is sufficient -Now if you really want to save money and get stella Image quality performance go for the Nikon Nikkor 80-200 f2.8D ED that Ken recommended...you can't go wrong with any of them..Trust me Ken is the king of glass quality...

    I just bought the g2. WOW......WOW......WOW, and I got it cheaaaap from Ireland on Ebay. New for 890 Euros. The lens is used with D750. My last shooting was in fairly low light conditions. Iso around 2000, 250 of sec 2.8f. I did not have to do almost any editing. Leaving aside that by Iso 2000 one will see grains by zooming in, the colooooooooooors are just amazing. Next purchase will be the 24-70 g2.

Definitely will put some gaffer tape on it next time. That is worth every penny would not surprise me if they raise the price a couple hundred dollars soon.

      Great review - on my monitor I can see the differences in the pics you posted.....I think the Nikon is more pleasing to my eye generally speaking but damn it's close and not worth close to the difference in price. I shoot events every week and go between my 24-70 and 70-200 depending on the venue etc. I never stand closer than 6 feet away with the 70-200. So, focus breathing isn't relevant in my case. What would sway my decision in favor of the Tamron, low light/indoors with no flash or external lighting. To me that's a huge deal. The only minor thing I'm wondering about is any difference on let's say the d810 or a full frame.

    • @mongini1
      @mongini1 7 років тому +5

      hey buddy... you got one tiny thing wrong... the VC Mode 3 isnt for saving on battery. If you use Mode 1, and you locked your focus, the VC is already compensating your movement. lets imagine that you drifted to the left while focusing... the VC already compensated this movement. if you release the shutter, and drift to left again, the optics may not be able to move even more to compensate or maybe reset trying to compensate fron scratch. For that reason Tamron implemented this... They want to be able to deliver maximum stabilization when taking the picture. They added it to the new version of the 150-600 aswell and it beats the crap out everything else.

  • @jeffbrislane5782
    @jeffbrislane5782 7 років тому

    Could you make a video explaining why some people think focus breathing is such a big issue? I know for some video applications it is a problem when you want to shift focus from very close to wide or vice versa, but why do some photographers rant about it, especially the old Nikkor 70-200 and this new tamron? Mr TN would have me believe that this lens and the old Nikkor for that matter is completely useless for any kind of portrait shooting

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis
      @KenTheoriaApophasis  7 років тому +1

      people like that are BUTTON SNIFFERS…….they bitch and moan about every little damn thing for no reason. …….video work its an issue, …..i was repairing lenses 20 years before he ever picked up a camera :/ ….. the Tamron focus breaths UP CLOSE….however only few years ago you couldnt even BUY (it didnt exist) a 70 200 that would focus that damn close……all the talking heads on the www complaining about focus breathing at 6 feet or less is invalid……while you CAN use the lens (NOW) really damn close….im not worried about focus breathing at 6 feet or less on a telephoto meant to be used basically at 10+ feet 99.9999% of the time
      he has, pure fact, never touched this lens, ive been testing the piss out of it…… :/ heheh

    This is a wonderful review! Thanks so much.
    You know the one set of photogs who would use a 70-200mm close to the minimal focusing distance where focus breathing might matter, is headshot photogs. That's what I do. Now I'm not even sure if I'm thinking rightly of it, so that's why I ask.. I have the first VR Nikon 70-200 and it's focus breathing is minimal. I think like 190 effectively but I'm not certain. So my question is this: Does focus breathing effect the quality of the bokeh? Is it strictly a field of view issue? Or if I want softer nose and ears and tack sharp eyes, is it even an issue that I can't get a true 200mm from something like the Tamron closer to the minimal focusing distance. Thanks again for all you do for the community of photogs at large. [BTW my go to lens for headshots now is the 135mm f/2 Nikkor, I'm noticing more moire with it, does that make any sense?]

    I have the G2 in order since last monday. I'm glad I did not buy the Nikon VR III fluorite at 3179 €
    Tested the Tamron G1 around xmas but it was not sharper than my old Nikon 70-210, so decided so save for the VR III and return the G1. Bokeh and saturation with the G1 was very nice. With the G2, there's no more reason to buy the VR III.
    Looking at your skateboard shots, the lens delivers. G2 sharpness is crazy, which could not be said of the G1.

      Theoria Apophasis Yeah, otherwise has to go to "service center", last episode with Olympus did not went well for me, send lens due to motor clicking during video, got it back after 5 days, they cleaned something and the1y made scratch on the colar ring at the front element...and guess what damn thing clicked again.Luckly my mate (owner of the camera shop and dealer ) arranged brand new replacement. So the conclusion: It does not metter which company has own service and repaire own lenses and camera, if there is terible technician there hi will be able to screw up a stone if you give him to repair.

    Excellent job Ken. I'd made a mental decision to only buy Nikkor lenses but Tamron are really killing it with pretty much every lens they release. My next lens purchase has to be a 24 - 70, I'll have to wait until Tamron release their G2 of this zoom before I consider buying, especially as the Nikkor 24 - 70 VR is horrendously expensive. I just bought mine and its just arrived last few days ago. Oh, I'm gutted. It cant track running dogs especially when oncoming even if they are just jogging. I take action shots of dogs, thats basically all I use the camera for. With the Tamron I maybe get 1 hit per 10-20 missed. It was meant to be an upgrade to the nikkor 70-200 f4 that has done me well for years but nothing is better except it opens to 2.8. I'm using a d4, single or 9 focus points and continuous focus. I've made a gamble and just bought the tap in console to see if a firmware update will improve things.

       @freddie fernandez oh yeah, perfect for that. I take action photos of dogs and dogs move faster than people, the lens couldnt keep up with tracking that, but for weddings and events I think it will perform brilliantly, its a fab lens. In low light it performs better than any lens Ive used, it can see and snap to objects I cant see with my own eyes. For you, I'd get it, and you'll have no regrets unless you want to track very fast moving subjects. It's not a slow focusing lens, it is fast but not fast-action fast

    Love your channel. Keep up the good work. Partly based on your previous review of the previous Tamron 70-200 2.8, I have been saving up for it for my Canon 70D. At the beginning of this review you said there is no comparison between the two and that the previous model is now obsolete compared to this one. Can you perhaps compare them both or talk about why the newer model is so much better? I'm also wondering if I should still go ahead and buy the previous model if it comes down in price as it is still a great lens according to the internet (and yourself). Thank you and kind regards.

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis
      @KenTheoriaApophasis  7 років тому +2

      relative to the 1st gen tamron , which i also have (and about to sell) …, its night and day diff, especially the VR……when i found out how insane the new tamron was, i switched the testing then only comparing it to the new Nikkor 70 200 2.8 VRIII ($2800). ……
      the Tamron focus breaths UP CLOSE….however only few years ago you couldnt even BUY (it didnt exist) a 70 200 that would focus that damn close……all the talking heads on the www complaining about focus breathing at 6 feet or less is invalid……while you CAN use the lens (NOW) really damn close….im not worried about focus breathing at 6 feet or less on a telephoto meant to be used basically at 10+ feet 99.9999% of the time

    • @AontachtTV
      @AontachtTV 7 років тому

      Hey, thanks for the reply. I agree with you on the focus breathing being obsolete. People's gripe may stem from the fact that the 1st gen model was a macro lens, whereas the 2nd and 3rd gen are not.
      What I'm confused about, though, is when you refer to the 1st gen Tamron, and the previous model. From what I understand there have been two previous models, one with VR (or VC) and one without. When you say they are worlds apart, are you referring to the previous model being Di VC USD? That is the one with Vibration Control, which according to my research was worlds apart from its predecessor, the Di LD (IF) which was also a macro lens but didn't have the VR/VC.
      The Di VC USD was supposed to have amazing VR, the only problem was the AF wasn't up to par with the Nikon or Canon models. If you're saying the VR in the new G2 is worlds apart from the Di VC USD, I'm finding it difficult to understand how it could have improved over the previous model which was supposed to be excellent in every way already. I'm guessing the AF has improved significantly too?
      I wouldn't have this much interest in writing such a long winded response only I was very interested in the Di VC USD which is practically half the price of the Canon/Nikor. The fact that I could purchase the 24-70 AND 70-200 for the same price as the Canon/Nikon lens makes it a no brainer for me. So I guess compared to the 2nd gen Di VC USD, is there much difference?

      I don't doubt you that the lens is awesome Ken, but focus breathing is an issue when focus stacking. I had exactly that problem yesterday and it was not something I had even considered before. I was trying to compress the perspective with the long lens (@200MM) on a beach scene with a distant lighthouse, sand dunes and a river estuary in the mid ground and a load of driftwood in the foreground. The driftwood changed size as I changed the focus distance. I don’t know if there is anything can be done about that. Any suggestions?

    Going to start saving up for this one. I'm a Canon user, so I'll be interested to see how it stacks up against the 70-200 II in terms of focus breathing.
    What I am more interested in is, does it have a lower magnification (at the same distance) than the other 70-200s (beyond 14 feet) due to the effects of focus breathing. I'm looking at this lens for weddings and events, where the larger magnification of the Canon is still attractive.

      would love that, i have the current 24-70, not as well built and robust as the Nikkor, but gets the job done! Judging from the step up they made with the 15-30 and now the new Gen2 70-200, things are looking great, not to mention the new design (getting rid of the gold) looks so much better! My best buy ever is that 15-30. Many thanks to mr AP for that, one year shooting and zero issues with it. On and upwards tamron!
