GoPro: Parachute Fail with Andy Lewis

- Andy Lewis is in the midst of a standard base jump cutaway when things go unexpectedly sideways. Figuratively and literally.
Dirt and grit buildup cause Andy's cutaway cable to jam when he goes to perform the cutaway, leaving him spiraling under a partially inflated parachute with only a couple of seconds to pitch. When that doesn't work Andy is faced with the impossible odds of landing with only three inflated cells.

If they jump right after him and he is still under canopy in the air, well. They cant do anything to help from there.
Even if they rushed down right away to see if they needed to call for help it would take forever and a half for help to get there.
because they could have crashed into him, because of the air currents probably pushing them the same direction a little i dont really know.

FYI the “let’s make the call” refers to hitting the emergency button in their Garmin Inreach. It’s a gps system to send your coordinates to search and rescue

I think he meant that couldn’t have gone any worse without it being fatal. If he landed on a rock instead of soft sand, he’d be toast. If his base canopy entangled with the first one, he’d be dead.

You can be happy that half the cells of the canopy stayed rather stable and open even though a gone wrong cutaway and slowed your fall enough not to let you get smashed

I never thought the cutaway cords could fail like this. How and when does someone inspect them. Also, what sort of rig is he jumping with, a bunch of random parts piecemealed together or is a reserve that you pitch by hand and a BASE canopy that cuts away a real thing?

Doing a cutaway I hope you had a reserve. Though I am not sure why you didn't pull the reserve just to (hopefully) get some more drag from the extra chute(even if it wouldnt have deployed fully). Looks like you got blessed with another chance at life, enjoy it! Blue skies!

Honest question, never even been under a parachute, but how do you "preflight" equipment? You mean from a plane instead of base to make sure everything is good to go?
@@fletchermoore5428 No, just like they preflight aircraft you just check serviceability of the parts and nothing is worn or routed incorrectly.

Yancey Anderson The cutaway pillow came off the opposite-side cable. He didn’t test the cutaway before jumping.
Did he try to deploy a reserve??
