- Top.gg definitely won't be too happy that I not only explain why they protected Mee6 through it's DM advertisement drama, but also place a bogus bid on their advertisement system.
If you didn't know, Top.gg is a Discord bot and server listing website. But you probably know that since Mee6 spammed it on full blast during November. That DM blast from Mee6 felt like Mee6 trying to become more relevant and place higher on the listings. But, an anonymous tip tells me that's not the case.

So I talked to top.gg. They claim the increased ads were due to Black Friday. This does make sense but at the end of the day they are profiting off Mee6 driving people to their website. A pretty clear conflict of interest (although to the top.gg rep I talked to, this is not a conflict of interest). Not sure what type of ethics course they took but we definitely had different instructors.

Also please don't place bogus bids on top.gg. While it does harm top.gg, it also harms the good bot devs that use it to advertise their bot.

The moral of the story: learn to make your own bot.
Many of the features MEE6 has are very easy to replicate, including premium features that they make you pay for. You also get the benefit of more customization if you make your own bot, and you can make it go along with the theme of your server. Even if you don't know how to code, it's easy to just go online and find templates. There's entire documentations going into detail on how to do many of the things a generic moderation bot can do, and to do things like levels you only need basic math skills, an understanding of intervals, and an understanding of the message event.
As a veteran bot developer myself I can't fully agree with this because those who don't fully know what they're doing are bound to make grave mistakes. And when those mistakes are related to something moderation (think, accidentally not locking commands down) you could be in serious trouble.
Furthermore, discord already knows enough kitchen sink (I.e. do-it-all) bots and adding even more to the pool won't help anyone. At best you make your own bot a private one, but most people will instantly jump to a public one, if only because the tutorials they end up finding instruct them to do so.
@@favna If someone doesn't want to code or design tutorials for their bot (help menus are a pain, they're my least favorite part of anything), I'd say the best alternative is to find a few general purpose bots that total all the features they want in their server without needing to pay anything. As you've said, there are a lot of general purpose bots out there. I just personally believe in customization being more beneficial in the long run, but that's also coming from a personal bias as someone who's been coding for years. It's that same bias that fuels my disagreement with people paying for features that can easily be replicated with notepad in 10 minutes. I.e: leveling roles which MEE6 (last time I checked) forces people to pay for. There's a function in both DiscordJS and DiscordPY that adds a role, and all someone needs to do is add that to the level event.
Whether you make a bot or not, I don't think simple features should require "premium membership", and as I mentioned in my previous post, someone without coding knowledge can still find some pretty useful templates. I thrived off stackoverflow when I first started making bots, and even though I made a lot of mistakes, it felt worth it to me when I was eventually able to make stuff for free that people would pay for.
i am second in command of a server trying to replace MEE6, and while there is work being done on a new bot, it is still taking lots of time
This is exactly what I did. Developed my own bot that's only in my server and it does everything I want it to do: moderation, levels, currency, etc. No more relying on third-party bots I don't have 100% control over.

fun fact, MEE6 violates the Australian Spam act, they have to have an opt out feature for these kinds of ads and have to stop within 5 business days
pretty sure it violates multiple european spam laws aswell just for that reason

I suspect that reviewing bots is protected by a non-disclosure agreement due to the fact that potentially abusive bots could well pop up. It's also user-generated content which, for the reasons above, is slightly sensitive information if it's yet to be reviewed. Many sites have a similar policy, and I'd learned this when asking to view, for the sake of curiosity, the interface for viewing submitted reports. Reports (much like bot submissions) are confidential and hence the information must not be shared.

@@hi-kt3qr If there is no obvious way to unsubscribe, then it isn't a grey area. Discord is based in the US. US law states through the CAN-SPAM Act:
"Despite its name, the CAN-SPAM Act doesn’t apply just to bulk email. It covers all commercial messages, which the law defines as “any electronic mail message the primary purpose of which is the commercial advertisement or promotion of a commercial product or service,” including email that promotes content on commercial websites. The law makes no exception for business-to-business email. That means all email - for example, a message to former customers announcing a new product line - must comply with the law."
And point 5 of the CAN-SPAM Act states:
"Tell recipients how to opt out of receiving future email from you. Your message must include a clear and conspicuous explanation of how the recipient can opt out of getting email from you in the future. Craft the notice in a way that’s easy for an ordinary person to recognize, read, and understand. Creative use of type size, color, and location can improve clarity. Give a return email address or another easy Internet-based way to allow people to communicate their choice to you. You may create a menu to allow a recipient to opt out of certain types of messages, but you must include the option to stop all commercial messages from you. Make sure your spam filter doesn’t block these opt-out requests."
Mee6 is breaking FEDERAL law.

hey! if your current adblocker starts to allow ads, there is either an option to opt out of the allowed ads or you could use a different one such as uBlock Origin(yes, with an origin, because uBlock was given away, while the ublock origin fork stayed the same).

An alternative is Adguard. The Adguard app is paid, but the extension is totally free.

At this section 9:08 the reason why they mentioned so many popular brands. Is because those are what are called "Tags" which are used on many sites that have a search system. Where they'll add names of popular brands in the description so they can attract users with out having to rename themselves all those popular brands.

If you level up, you get personal DM that contains ads. Therefore, it's not "unsolicited". So basically, you can spam users with ads when they do literally anything in the server. Oh, look! A user sends in a message. Let's have our bot DM this user, "Hey! X bot just saw you sent . Also, here's some ads:"
Actually, no. Federal US law, where Discord is based, states there has to be a clear and conspicuous way to opt out of ANY advertisement email. And in terms of FTC, email refers to ANY electronic mail message.

the definition of "unsolicited" is "not asked for; given or done voluntarily." This means when you level up with MEE6, you expect a level up message in ur DMs. That's fine. However, you did NOT ask for an advertisement in the DMs. They can give the level up notice. They cannot spam you with ads in that same notice. Once the advertisement gets introduced, is when it becomes unsolicited. People can handle a DM, but nobody willingly asks for an ad. Leveling up does not mean you agree to receiving advertisements.

Lol have you considered the fact that November 24th is also Black Friday aka the highest day for advertising across the whole country? That's why there are takeover ads that day. Nothing to do with mee6. Also re auctions, you're obviously going to get better results on a discord bot site than on UA-cam for getting installs, hence people pay higher CPMs. The fact that you compare the two just shows how little you really know about this. I personally hate mee6. i build my own stuff. i dont have a problem with topgg at all, but if this is true then thats kindof wrong. regardless, business is business.
on the staffing area, i participated as part of the staff team and signed an NDA, and i believe its because topgg wants to keep their reviewing/moderating process as private as possible. i dont have a problem with that either
