Your son is adorable. When I was younger I didn’t want to be a doctor because I thought that you couldn’t have a personal life or have any children, but I’ve realized this isn’t true! And your videos are definitely evidence to that. You’re honestly so inspiring and I hope you have a great year to come. 😊😃
@@drjennale Can surgeons determine their hours? I always thought they have to be on call a lot of the time? Or like two week on/two weeks off, ect. I know some non life threatening surgeons plan their operation days for mon, Tues, fridays, ect. I'm mainly thinking about er surgeons. How much power do they have in determining their schedule?
You definitely work more as a surgeon. Average 60-80 hour weeks. But if you choose a surgical speciality that does mainly elective surgery then you can have a better schedule - like ophthalmology or plastics because do you have to be on call.
I really enjoy watching your videos. I've been set on Pediatrics but if I end up doing Family Medicine, know that it's hugely because of your videos :D :D
Hi! It looks like you have EPIC as your EMR system. I am a scribe for clinics and a useful way to save time documenting is to create your own templates for certain diagnosis. Ex: a knee pain/injections template, leaving asterisks "***"in the areas where you need specific information (which knee received the injection, medication lot number, etc." You'll just use these when documenting and it will save you a lot of time as you'll just have to slightly modify it with your patient. I'm sure you have this information already, but just in case you didn't and you had to continue free handing your note!
Having a PCP who is well versed in my case (in-depth knowledge) is the difference between what I consider a good doctor and one who is overwhelmed by the caseload and trying to skim through things. My healthcare organization asks patients a variety of questions regarding providers and patient experience. One question is in regard to how well the patient feels the doctor knows his/her medical history. The more time you invest in understanding your patients via their history, the better the physical/clinical exam is. And documentation is key! Takes time, but it's very appreciated. Happy New Year, and I enjoy watching Wyatt grow!
Is Wyatt still at the same daycare? I know its hard 😞 seeing him with bites and all. Also can you make a part 2 with more detail about not so glamorous parts of being a doc?
I recently decided to go the PA route instead of DO and sometimes I feel like I've given up but honestly being a wife and future mother one day is what is most important. Anyway, I'm in my 4th year of undergrad and with shadowing and scribing I realized being a doctor is so much paperwork. I recently had to request the notes from my ACL reconstruction. It's like a 45 minute surgery and my notes were like 4 pages. I could only imagine a open heart surgery or something truly extensive.
You will still have to chart as a PA but you’ll have less school and no residency. Schedule is probably better too. I agree with you, I’m always a mom first.
Am a third medical student in Namibia, watching this and getting some new real life perspective of the career I chose is such a blessing...you're such a blessing, may God bless you❤
Aww your son is so cute!! I just love kids. My favorite food to make is baked mashed potatoes ( self mashed ) with a layer of cheese on top. I bake it till the cheese turns golden brown. As a high school student, this is the only thing I know how to make besides boiling water 😅.
Love the video! I'm a PGY1 in peds and it's been so crazy I haven't cooked since I've started and I miss it so much. It's motivating to see you balance family, residency, and home life and cooking! When I do cook, I love to cook Vietnamese food because it brings me closer to home and warms my heart on those tough days. My absolute favorite!
Hi Jenny, do patients ever look down on you for being a DO? I've noticed during my time as a low-level provider that patients are often very judgmental about where the doctor went to school, and was hoping you could provide some insight on it. Anyone in the comments, doctor or not, feel free to weigh in, I'd love to know what people think about this.
My patients love that I’m a DO. Especially because I practice OMT. Most come in feeling pain and most leave feeling less pain or no pain at all! I find that patients just want a provider that listens to them, is their advocate, and helps educate them on their health options. Doesn’t matter if you’re an MD or DO. If you can do those things, your patients will appreciate you.
DO is an osteopathic physician. DO is equivalent to MD. We just have a different philosophy for which we practice medicine. - we treat the patient holistically, the body is self healing, structure and function are interrelated. I’ve made a couple of videos talking about the difference but there are also plenty of videos on UA-cam as well.
I want to be a doctor but there’s so much you have to do to get to that doctor point the long process the money and the hard work the earliest you are out of residency is 28/29 usually starting so late in life is what gets me when everyone else is already into careers but it’s my passion so ofc there’s a 98.9 % chance I’m going to pursue it
I work as a medical scribe in the ER, I follow the provider around and document the entire physician-patient encounter, allowing the doctor/mid-level to eliminate the amount of tedious work charting can be! I sometimes wonder how many extra hours the doctor would be there for if I wasn't there to chart for them. Hopefully you get to work with some scribes in the future!
Gee, that's a lot of packeting with the home chef order. I'd feel to guilty to get this but that's just me and all of my non-plastic craziness. At any rate, thanks for keeping your fans updated.

I’ve had a couple of people disagree with diagnosis that have been in their medical record. I start by doing a thorough chart review to see if the diagnosis has been properly worked up. And then I just ask them about it. Do my own history and physical. Sometimes I agree with them. Other times I recommend we either do more test to confirm or refute their diagnosis.

Wow this was such a great video!! You really inspire me❤️ do all attendings need to take the same types of notes that you take, or is that just for residents?
I guess you can kinda look at it like studying. Some people study well at home while others get distracted. With Wyatt running around, I feel like it’d take me three times as long to finish notes and it’d be unfair to him for only giving him half my attention.
I am a nurse in a busy Ob-GYN office. I feel like you didn’t depict how difficult Clinics can be. There is so much behind the scenes that goes on that is so unglamorous. Mainly the docs not working as a team and refusing to see someone else’s patient. I know you are in Residency but do you sometimes feel that way too?
I think that really depends on the clinic. Our clinic model is team based. As residents, we are only in the clinic several days a week and there is no way to see every single one of our patients, especially in an urgent setting and in a timely fashion without coverage. I find that my co residents and I are more than happy to see each other’s patients.
Depends on the rotation. Inpatient medicine is 6 days/week which ~ 80 hrs/wk. On outpatient medicine it’s a lot more chill. Typical 9-5 with holidays off ~40 hrs/wk.

Residency training is a lot of work but once you start working as a doctor, you determine your hours so family balance is always an option!
