Stan stayed home with Wyatt the whole first year. If you ask Wyatt if he loves mommy he’ll say yes. When you ask him if he loves daddy, he says yes. Most of the time he’ll cling to me more than he does Stan. Don’t worry, you will bond with your baby.
You just asked something I had in mind, love to see Jenny's answer. My 2.5 month daughter took us 4.5 years to conceive and 2 rounds of iVF. I should resume work by end March and at this stage it looks like the best option is to have my husband take care of her at home while he works from home and less hours. We depend on my salary mainly so it doesn't seem feasible for me to leave my job. I am lucky though, I work Monday to Friday 9am-6pm (5pm until my daughter is one), but I know i do lots of work from my mobile. Not a doctor so the schedule seems friendlier
im curious how your male counter parts feel because i am also concerned about starting a family in med school. My S/O is not going to be in med school but will be working .. and i feel bad because i worry about being able to be present early on.
I honestly don’t care what my male counter parts feel. Lol I am part of a large group of physician and medical student moms who are very supportive. As long as you have a good support system at home, I don’t see a reason why you can not do well in both medical training and being a mom.

There are plenty of medical student dads. Way more than medical student mom and hence more accepted/not as surprising. Same applies, you just need a good support system at home and you will do well.
My Family Doctor had here first daughter while in Medical School, her second during residency, and her son after she started her practice. Once she started her practice her husband left Microsoft and stayed at home with the kids. When the kids got a bit older he worked in her office keeping the computers going and doing some billing. As the kids got older they helped out in the office filing. It was so nice seeing this family dynamic. I watched her family grow. When I asked her about her struggles having kids while in med school and residency she said it was tough at times, but she was glad she didn’t wait to have kids.
You're such a motivator for me to continue my path towards becoming a doctor while having a family. It seems like you enjoy it all and I cannot wait to start my journey!
@@drjennale Oh I bet! Being a doctor is something I have been wanting to do ever since I can remember and now actually being able to work towards that in school is incredible. But I definitely get scared when my husband and I start talking about having a child because that's something I really want to do but am not sure how to manage with school. But your advice really helps and I know it's possible (obviously!) it's just all about that time management! haha
One doc I interviewed recently also said there’s never a good time with med training, but she was glad she got it done before she got too old. Seems like a lot of doctors seem to agree. Nice video!

I’m a PA student (3rd semester) and I’ve been watching you for a while. I was wondering how old you were when you got pregnant? I just got engaged to my bf of about 6 years. We don’t plan on getting married until I’m done with school and paying off my loans. And of course kids after. I get nervous because I’ll be in my 30s and know there can be more complications but I don’t want to rush having kids. No one in my class has kids and I don’t know how anyone can (there have been people with kids in the past) but all I do is go to class and study. I’ll go to the store for food and meal prep twice a week. I can maybe go to the gym for an hour 1-3 times a week. Sometimes none. Depends. Don’t have kids and I don’t go out and do anything fun during a semester.
I was 27 when I was pregnant. First year of PA school is didactic based similar to med school. But your second year should be clinicals which gives you a lot more time. And then you don’t have residency. Waiting to pay off your loans before having a family is also a personal choice. I didn’t feel the need to wait.
My boyfriend and I have been long distance for 6 years (together 8) and he thankfully will be following me to where ever I go to medical school this year. This has been such a big topic of conversation for us. When should we get married? When to have kids? I guess we will just have to figure it out but at least we have you and Stan to look to for the example! Haha. My mom is very traditional and is insistent on us waiting until I am completely done with my education and residency to get married. But I will be around 31-32 at that time and I don’t really want to wait that long to be a mom. Asian cultures... but hopefully we will find the right balance. Love your videos Jenny!!!
Thank you for this video! I have been looking around Google all day regarding-mom in med-school. Wyatt is so adorable :) I don’t think there is a right time. I am personally wanting to have kids before I get into medical school since I will be 30 in 2 years, and my mom said the longer I wait, the more she wouldn’t be able to help with the baby since she is getting up there in age. Also with the mom and baby bonding, my mom stayed at home for 4 years after having me, but she started working full time when I was 5 and I actually remember her absence, felt detached and became attention-seeking. I did spend time with my grandmother which was a good thing, but this made me realize it doesn’t matter when the mom works. 1st year with the baby is important for sure but it depends on how you can balance your work and time with baby afterwards

I don't think I've looked at women doctors with children the same ever again. I clearly remember thinking you must be some sort of machine haha! The sacrifices you're making now will allow you to have the lifestyle you and you're family desire in the future. Screw everyone that had anything negative to say bc half of these "adulting" experts probably haven't accomplished nearly as much as you and probably think you have to be a steptord wife in order to maintain a good home. I am a mum of three (10, 8 and 4). When my youngest was born I was 30 and decided to finally get my teaching degree. I have completed three placements and just entered my fourth year. You can do anything you put your mind too. I also own a business and work part time. I think it's so inspiring when I see mums achieving their dreams and goals. We are teaching our children to work hard! You're amazing!

I think all doctor mamas are troopers. ☺️💪🏻 They grow a human inside and save people’s life at a hospital. 😲 The only thing I concern about pregnant doctor mama is that they are exposed all kinds of virus and disease. My internal medicine resident husband got some virus from his work, and now we are worried about our 25 week old fetus. 😭
My bf and I have discussed having kids while I'm in med school. He works full-time as an engineer so we've talked about my mom watching kids while I'm at school and he's at work. Do you think having a grandparent watch/essentially raise their grandchild while the parents are working/in school causes issues with the parent/child relationship as they get older? I want to specialize in psychiatry, which is awesome for a more "set" schedule and have more time outside of work, etc. What are your thoughts?
I wish my mom was around more to help with Wyatt. He’d actually know some Vietnamese if that was the case! At the end of the day, you will still always be mom. Grandma or nanny is not going to replace you. I just personally didn’t want to have kids in the first two years of med school because I had to study a lot. And I wasn’t willing to miss that much of my child growing up.
@@drjennale That's pretty funny, my grandparents pretty much raised me because my parents were always working and I know a lot more Vietnamese than my brother because of that. Personally, it put a lot of strain on our parent-child relationship because I felt like they were never there regularly (they're workaholics). We never went on vacations together either. You just gotta spend time with your kids and give them fun experiences in spite of your work and school life! They say kids don't remember that stuff but my uncles took me to the zoo and amusement parks when I was young but my parents never did, so I have fonder memories of them.
You hit it on the nose.... there is never a right time to have kids. I went the nursing route because medical school was just too long and too expensive, and I knew I didn’t want to be an older mother. I was done with the NP program when I got pregnant, a couple days shy of my 28th birthday. I thought I was totally ready. Totally wasn’t lol. But still worth it, of course

Niccolò Machiavelli yes. The daycare we take Wyatt opens at 530AM-7PM. And they start taking infants at 1 month. My Co resident is pregnant and her husband is also in his second year of residency. They have family coming to help.

Hello Doctor Jenny,let me start by saying that you have such a beautiful family, you are such a hard working human being and mostly you empire a lot of people including me. So I got accepted in one of the Caribbean medical school and I plan on starting this Fall. My only worrie is that I have a 5 months son,he will be 10 months by September when I start medical school. I am looking into moving to the Caribbean with him,put him into day care during the day while I go to school, then pick him up in the evening. We will be there just the 2 of us for at least 2 semesters and I am so nervous. Please what do you think? Do you think that I will have enough time to study?

Aww...he has your angelic eyes....My 15 months old boy went back to daycare this past Monday and he didn't like it at all after staying at home for one month (I am a college professor). You are right in that there is really no right time to start a family. I did wait until I got tenured, though, but I know lots of other people who have family prior to that and are still successful in their careers. Here's to awesome working mamas!
Jenny Le, these videos are so informational for what it took and what it’s like for you. In my field, I hardly even know any other women, much less who are ready to have kids (in engineering school). I felt like I didn’t have anyone to turn to for pursuing something insanely difficult and draining, plus interning full-time, plus a family... you are definitely a rare diamond. Any tips you have and “do’s and don’t’s” you’ve learned to keep feeling like you we’re going to graduate, make it through the classes and to the finish line...all these pieces of wisdom really help so much!! I even wonder when to plan meals and how to carry the meals with me when being so busy and pregnant. I’m trying to learn what I can before we go for it.

I have already started studding for USMLE step 1. My husband works 10 hrs a day 4 days a week. You can possibly do a research Year in between medical school and residency. But I don’t know how much actual time you’ll have off by still doing research. From what I remember from most Programs websites, they usually require you to apply no less than a year from graduation.
Props to you for being a mom while in med-school! Nursing school was challenging enough and my kiddos are older. But building a family is forever and school isn’t! Totally off topic...where’d you get your t-shirt? 😬
Random question, but would it be possible to be in residency or rotations if you were a single parent? Watching a lot of your past videos I noticed that you have very long hours, have to work weekends and evenings/nights. So would the hospitals be able to work around your schedule if you we're a single parent to a young child that was in daycare or school? Do you know how that would work?
As a doctor, you still have to get proper residency training. I don’t think that would be possible without working some nights just because the patient population can be very different. Also, medicine is very unpredictable. Just because “you’re off work” you can’t just leave if you’re needed. That being said, I find that your family life revolves more around your residency schedule. Single parents will need help - family, friends, nanny, au pair are all options. I have never known someone to do it alone.
Jenny, let me talk to you as I would if we were friends chatting over coffee, or mojito, never mind. You do you, what is best for you and your family is something only you and Stan can measure. You invested in your education because you are passionate about your profession, you decide to go back to work because you know what you want and you work for it, and you struggle to find the time you wish for for Wyatt because you are a good mom and want to give him as much as you can. Period. Whatever other people think about your life is not something to event think about

I think other students will look at you differently more so amazed that you are going through the process while you are pregnant. But as for the interviewers - I think you just convey the fact that you are confident and you have a plan on how to raise the child while going through your medical training.
It's sort of alarming how flippant some people are about their future prospects. In my non-traditional premed forums, I see a lot of women not worried at all about starting a family very late in life and after they finish residency. What a stressful situation! It's as if women don't know that as they age (35+) their chances of getting pregnant start to diminish. That, topped with the fact that it's going to be just as challenging to have a baby when they are starting to practice medicine. Trying to have kids much later in life has some pros, but mostly cons in my mind. You limit how many children you could have, and you don't take advantage of the opportunity to spend the time with your young child (which is now!) . It's a complicated situation with 100s of variables. But in general, I don't see why anyone would want to wait for so late in the game to have children. Would you consider doing a quick video/audio chat about this topic? I have a reallly small youtube channel, but I think this is such an important topic. I have twin girls that are 5 now and stayed home with them the majority of there pre-kinder life. It was a huge decision I made to forgo starting school and delay my education, and I think your perspective is fascinating.
i feel the EXACT same way---i have to put WAY more work than my colleagues to learn. I am drowning right now :( do residencies give you more of a lenient schedule if you are pregnant?
There are hard rotations and more relaxed rotations. For example when I started residency, Wyatt was only 8 weeks so I had more outpatient rotations in the beginning (averaging 40 hour weeks). Then by the end of my first year I was loaded with all the harder inpatient rotations (averaging 80 hour weeks). There’s no way to get around it because you still need proper medical training.
@@drjennale makes sense! Im just trying to see if they would custom your sched a bit to work around your pregnancy. A lot of women are SO sick during their pregnancy :/ That's what im really worried about

Jenny Le I’ve done a lot of research on the differences but how are the hours, do you work more hours as a physician or PA? I’m still confused on that aspect bc Ik it’s diff for every hospital and specialty but do you know the basics?
You can work as much or as little in either profession. Work hours also depend of specialty. If you work in a surgical speciality then you may have to do call. If you do outpatient medicine then you usually have a more fixed scheduled with weekends off.

My parents always told me to wait until I finished my education to date! Lol I’ve always been a rebel.
I promise you, your mom will still love her grandchild regardless if you had them now or waited until after schooling.

I have a gap year between undergrad and medical school, from May 2020 to August 2021. In your opinion, do you think it would be doable to have a baby during that gap & start school with 4+ month old?

My internal medicine resident husband got some virus from his work, and now we are worried about our 25 week old fetus. 😭

My bf and I have discussed having kids while I'm in med school. He works full-time as an engineer so we've talked about my mom watching kids while I'm at school and he's at work. Do you think having a grandparent watch/essentially raise their grandchild while the parents are working/in school causes issues with the parent/child relationship as they get older? I want to specialize in psychiatry, which is awesome for a more "set" schedule and have more time outside of work, etc. What are your thoughts?
I wish my mom was around more to help with Wyatt. He’d actually know some Vietnamese if that was the case! At the end of the day, you will still always be mom. Grandma or nanny is not going to replace you.
I just personally didn’t want to have kids in the first two years of med school because I had to study a lot. And I wasn’t willing to miss that much of my child growing up.
@@drjennale That's pretty funny, my grandparents pretty much raised me because my parents were always working and I know a lot more Vietnamese than my brother because of that. Personally, it put a lot of strain on our parent-child relationship because I felt like they were never there regularly (they're workaholics). We never went on vacations together either. You just gotta spend time with your kids and give them fun experiences in spite of your work and school life! They say kids don't remember that stuff but my uncles took me to the zoo and amusement parks when I was young but my parents never did, so I have fonder memories of them.
You hit it on the nose.... there is never a right time to have kids. I went the nursing route because medical school was just too long and too expensive, and I knew I didn’t want to be an older mother. I was done with the NP program when I got pregnant, a couple days shy of my 28th birthday. I thought I was totally ready. Totally wasn’t lol. But still worth it, of course
Lol babies are so unpredictable. Once I feel comfortable, Wyatt gives me something else to worry about.

Niccolò Machiavelli yes. The daycare we take Wyatt opens at 530AM-7PM. And they start taking infants at 1 month.
My Co resident is pregnant and her husband is also in his second year of residency. They have family coming to help.

Hello Doctor Jenny,let me start by saying that you have such a beautiful family, you are such a hard working human being and mostly you empire a lot of people including me.
So I got accepted in one of the Caribbean medical school and I plan on starting this Fall. My only worrie is that I have a 5 months son,he will be 10 months by September when I start medical school. I am looking into moving to the Caribbean with him,put him into day care during the day while I go to school, then pick him up in the evening. We will be there just the 2 of us for at least 2 semesters and I am so nervous. Please what do you think? Do you think that I will have enough time to study?

Aww...he has your angelic eyes....My 15 months old boy went back to daycare this past Monday and he didn't like it at all after staying at home for one month (I am a college professor). You are right in that there is really no right time to start a family. I did wait until I got tenured, though, but I know lots of other people who have family prior to that and are still successful in their careers. Here's to awesome working mamas!
Jenny Le, these videos are so informational for what it took and what it’s like for you. In my field, I hardly even know any other women, much less who are ready to have kids (in engineering school). I felt like I didn’t have anyone to turn to for pursuing something insanely difficult and draining, plus interning full-time, plus a family... you are definitely a rare diamond. Any tips you have and “do’s and don’t’s” you’ve learned to keep feeling like you we’re going to graduate, make it through the classes and to the finish line...all these pieces of wisdom really help so much!! I even wonder when to plan meals and how to carry the meals with me when being so busy and pregnant. I’m trying to learn what I can before we go for it.
I'm so proud of you, you are so brave and strong to do what are doing right now. Wish i can be half as incredible as you are.

I have already started studding for USMLE step 1. My husband works 10 hrs a day 4 days a week. My boyfriend and I have been talking about the future as well and I have a question. Is it possible/smart to take a year off between medical school and residency to raise a child or would that just be detrimental for your career (such as no program would want you after) ?
You can possibly do a research Year in between medical school and residency. But I don’t know how much actual time you’ll have off by still doing research. From what I remember from most Programs websites, they usually require you to apply no less than a year from graduation.
Props to you for being a mom while in med-school! Nursing school was challenging enough and my kiddos are older. But building a family is forever and school isn’t! Totally off topic...where’d you get your t-shirt? 😬

Random question, but would it be possible to be in residency or rotations if you were a single parent? Watching a lot of your past videos I noticed that you have very long hours, have to work weekends and evenings/nights. So would the hospitals be able to work around your schedule if you we're a single parent to a young child that was in daycare or school? Do you know how that would work?
As a doctor, you still have to get proper residency training. I don’t think that would be possible without working some nights just because the patient population can be very different. Also, medicine is very unpredictable. Just because “you’re off work” you can’t just leave if you’re needed.
That being said, I find that your family life revolves more around your residency schedule. Single parents will need help - family, friends, nanny, au pair are all options. I have never known someone to do it alone.
Jenny, let me talk to you as I would if we were friends chatting over coffee, or mojito, never mind. You do you, what is best for you and your family is something only you and Stan can measure. You invested in your education because you are passionate about your profession, you decide to go back to work because you know what you want and you work for it, and you struggle to find the time you wish for for Wyatt because you are a good mom and want to give him as much as you can. Period. Whatever other people think about your life is not something to event think about

I think other students will look at you differently more so amazed that you are going through the process while you are pregnant. But as for the interviewers - I think you just convey the fact that you are confident and you have a plan on how to raise the child while going through your medical training.

It's sort of alarming how flippant some people are about their future prospects. In my non-traditional premed forums, I see a lot of women not worried at all about starting a family very late in life and after they finish residency. What a stressful situation! It's as if women don't know that as they age (35+) their chances of getting pregnant start to diminish. That, topped with the fact that it's going to be just as challenging to have a baby when they are starting to practice medicine.
Trying to have kids much later in life has some pros, but mostly cons in my mind. You limit how many children you could have, and you don't take advantage of the opportunity to spend the time with your young child (which is now!)

It's a complicated situation with 100s of variables. But in general, I don't see why anyone would want to wait for so late in the game to have children.
Would you consider doing a quick video/audio chat about this topic? I have a reallly small youtube channel, but I think this is such an important topic. I have twin girls that are 5 now and stayed home with them the majority of there pre-kinder life. It was a huge decision I made to forgo starting school and delay my education, and I think your perspective is fascinating.
i feel the EXACT same way---i have to put WAY more work than my colleagues to learn. I am drowning right now :( do residencies give you more of a lenient schedule if you are pregnant?
There are hard rotations and more relaxed rotations. For example when I started residency, Wyatt was only 8 weeks so I had more outpatient rotations in the beginning (averaging 40 hour weeks). Then by the end of my first year I was loaded with all the harder inpatient rotations (averaging 80 hour weeks). There’s no way to get around it because you still need proper medical training.
@@drjennale makes sense! Im just trying to see if they would custom your sched a bit to work around your pregnancy. A lot of women are SO sick during their pregnancy :/ That's what im really worried about

THis video is super helpful. I’m deciding bw neonatalologist and neonatal physician assistant! I know I want to travel in life and family is very important to me, the only thing that’s stopping me from becoming s doctor is the fact that I’ll be 31 when I’m done with residency, I want to be there for my kids and travel the world and Ik anything is possible but I just don’t know if it would be worth it for me.
I always tell people that in another life, I probably would have been just as happy being a labor and delivery nurse.
Jenny Le I’ve done a lot of research on the differences but how are the hours, do you work more hours as a physician or PA? I’m still confused on that aspect bc Ik it’s diff for every hospital and specialty but do you know the basics?
You can work as much or as little in either profession. Work hours also depend of specialty. If you work in a surgical speciality then you may have to do call. If you do outpatient medicine then you usually have a more fixed scheduled with weekends off.
