  • Hi everyone! As you're watching it, I probably have about 3 weeks left of my maternity leave. Very Very VERY sad about it. The United States already has a poor maternity/paternity leave but the issue is even worse in GME programs.
There is a great article published in the American Journal of Medicine on "Parental leave in Graduate Medical Education and Recommendations for Reform"

Jenny, Im so glad you touched on FLMA and maternity leave... not only does it make female professionals pressured and feel insecure about starting a family and not having the financial support after having a baby is extremely unfair to woman in the workforce . We go to college to get an education and start our careers, but are unequally paid and are pressured into coming back to work to soon after giving birth. Maternity leave should be a paid benefit and for at least 12 weeks.. its such a diservice for women and to anyone male or female who want to start and family.

Maternity leave is such a huge issue in the U.S. Becoming a physician is already so much sacrifice, maternity leave should not have to include all your vacation and sick days. So new moms can’t afford to get sick when they come back to work from having a baby 😑, so unfair.

same in Poland. You have 46weeks maternity leave , paid 80% of your salary. You can also take first 20 weeks paid 100% and decide later if you want to take another 26 weeks - than paid 60%.

I just finished my mat leave. And here in Canada, as long as you work 52 weeks prior to going on mat leave, you get the whole year. Or 18 months, it's optional. Before you go on mat leave you apply for employment insurance (ei) and they pay you 55% of your income while on mat leave.

I work as a RN in Canada and had to go off on disability at 31 weeks pregnant. I'm super lucky and get paid while on sick leave and yes then we get our mat leave covered through our government up to 18 months. I don't know how American families cope with such a short mat leave; especially low income families that want to breastfeed.

In Australia we get 12 months maternity leave and the men can get paternity leave. Annual leave is 4-9 weeks depending on the job and if you do shift work. I am doing my PhD on childbirth in America at the moment (but I am Australian, my supervisor is from America) starting from the Sheppard-Towner Act in 1921 up until the present and looking at how maternal mortality in America is the worst ranked out of comparable countries and is now rising. I am specifically looking at prenatal care and whether it has any effect on maternal mortality rates.

I'm in South Africa. I am an engineer and all the companies I have been with offer atleast 4 months fully paid leave (1 company offered 5 months paid leave with the 6th month half paid). Its not perfect for everyone but basically if you are a professional you will have access to 4 months paid maternity leave. With an option to extend with either unpaid leave or paid annual leave. It is weird to see American videos of professionals saying they have no /6 weeks paid leave. Considering America is a first world country and SA is a developing country.

I’m so thankful I’m having baby #2 in California. I had my first in Alaska and maternity leave was 12 weeks unpaid (had to use my PTO/sick leave time and got a private insurance a year before we had baby for “disability” - it wasn’t much). California at least has disability coverage and paid family leave (like 50-60% of your income).

I’m a union RN and have the same issue...for our maternity leave we have to use up all of our sick time and vacation if we want to be paid. We can take up to 8 weeks of leave, and however much sick time and vacation doesn’t cover for, we have to take the rest unpaid. There’s some issue with getting short term disability with the way our vacation is split into vacation and sick time. I was told we will lose that? Idk, I think it’s just silly!!!

I guess we have it pretty good here. 9 months maternity leave and dad gets 3 and then some months they can share too. But it doesn't affect sick days or holidays. You get them as well
And I am on disability due to my crhonic disease and not beeing able to work, I live now in different EU country and get my benefit and free healthcare where I live now. Maternity leave in USA sounds tough to me as a South African, I'm currently on it and I get 4 months paid maternity leave, I added 1 month of my annual leave. Plus 1 month of unpaid leave, but I can claim from UIF insurance for that month. When you work is S.A you contribute to Unemployment Fund Insurance that covers you when you are of work. So I can claim from it for the month that I wont be paid. So in total I have 6 months maternity leave.

Do you think that If someone were to wait until after graduate school or medical school to have kids that it would prevent them from getting a job because of maternity leave? I know In radiology where I’m at you have to
sign a contract saying you aren’t going to have kids for two years.

What area are you from? I know in the US they have laws against that because it’s considered discrimination.
Family medicine is in such high demand that I don’t think there will be issues. But I can’t really say for sure because I haven’t started trying to get a real job as of yet

Jenny Le I live in West Virginia. That’s why I decided not to go into X-ray bc my friends had to agree not to have kids lol.

Jenny congratulations on baby London!! He’s sooo freaking adorable!!
I had my son Noah already! He was born at 34 weeks because they wanted to induce me (it’s a long story 😕) but he’s doing great now and will be 38 weeks tomorrow!
Girlfriend, the struggle with two is so real! And I can hella relate to the brushing of the teeth 🤣 Jayden is the same way 🤦🏽‍♀️
It’s awesome you get to breastfeed!! It’s a work in progress for us. Right now I’m pumping and supplementing him with formula for the extra calories. Man, there’s so much that’s going on, but I’ll fill up this whole comment section. Lol
Overall, you look amazing, Wyatt seems like a great big brother, and Stan is the MAN being so incredibly supportive! Love your family and hope all is well 💞

Oh my goodness! So sorry you’re going through all that. Probably unexpected for Noah to come so early.
His suck and swallow coordination is probably not fully developed yet but it’ll get there. We supplemented in the first few days with London too because my milk hadn’t come it and he was just at the boob ALL DAY! And I needed sleep lol. We still give him bottles of expressed breast milk when we’re out. No nipple confusion. Noah is going to do great!

Jenny Le I gotta get Jayden into a school/daycare. It’s just so damn expensive! Lol
Twice a week for half days is like $400-$500/month 🥴
Once Nick goes back to work it’s gonna be so hard having both boys to myself. It’s kind of easy since Noah just sleeps, but when both boys are up to eat the struggle is real. Lol
I love the lip color on you too by the way!

Hey Jenny you are doing a great job! I am inspired by your path to family medicine residency and would love to follow your footsteps. Can you please help me with a research project in family medicine.. I'll be grateful.

You lost me at the part you gave your toddler milk. I’m surprised that as a doctor you don’t know that milk is not necessary for a toddler, it is actually detrimental to his health. Besides that I appreciate your stamina :)
