I consider myself a horror buff, and unfortunately, it takes a lot to disturb me. When I first watched Hereditary, I had to shut it off right after the Charlie scene. Alex Wolff's performance in the immediate aftermath is what made the scene disturbing to my core. I had to shut it off right when he pulled up to the house. I wasn't sure I'd be able to finish it. I ended up continuing it 2 evenings later. Because of how incredibly disturbing the entire film is, and because of the amazing acting, especially by Toni Collette, I consider it the best horror movie of all time. In fact, I don't know how it can be topped, even by Ari Aster himself. Midsommar is disturbing as well, but nowhere near the level of Hereditary.

I'm a total horror movie wimp and thought Hereditary was a waste of time. I challenged myself to watch 5 horror movies, which were mostly new hyped up movies, and they all sucked. Especially 'us' was more of a comedy than a horror
The only movie that really did a number on me was "Changeling" with Angelina Jolie. Maybe it was worse for me because I have a son myself and I knew it was a movie based on a true story...

I think it's not there because they went for movies from 2010 and up (and why it's called recent disturbing movies. I even didn't expect movies from 2011 to be honest).
A lot of my favorite movies of all time are on this list. I love absolutely messed up, abhorrent movies. It’s just such a great experience to have your senses attacked in uncomfortable ways.
Melancholia had an awesome and positive ending from the perspective of the main character, it reminds me of the first 6 books of Chronicles of Tomas Covenant.
The only book I ever read from that was “White Gold Wielder”. Which I thought was good. Read it when I was a kid. So I never understood why no one ever tackled “The Thomas Covenant Chronicles” in film or a mini series on cable.
I remember sitting comfortably in my chair watching Hereditary. Then "the scene" happened and I spent the rest of the movie literally on the edge of my seat.
Had no idea what I was getting myself into first time I saw The Cell, never even saw a preview. I thought it was going to be some artsy drama because of J-Lo
I just watched it recently and some images from that movie keep replaying in my head and I hate it! I wanted to add I hate the images but loved the movie.
Rarely do I get frightened by scary movies but Hereditary haunted me for weeks. I kept waking up in the middle of the night for no reason and my mind would immediately start thinking about the sister clicking her tongue and there were times I could swear I saw someone standing in my room. *The scene* that really freaks everyone out was terrible for me but what tortured me and made me feel so sick was how the brother didn't stop or call the cops or anything. Obviously he was in intense shock but his reaction freaked me out the absolute most.
Mother I started watching just because it was on Netflix. I got to the first baby part and had to pause it and take a moment of "what the actual feck is this movie?!" Then the second baby part happened and the allegory clicked in my brain. It's honestly one of my favorite films of all time since and I've watched it more times than I care to admit.

Damn. Glad "Enter the Void" was on here... That movie messed with my head so thoroughly. I watched it back when I still smoked weed - by myself, in the dark, on the Fourth of July several years ago. The curtains on the door and the windows were lighting up from fireworks outside. I've watched a lot of weird movies - movies like this are my favorite. But for whatever reason, that movie really messed with me and stuck in my head - whether it was drugs, my environment at the time, my state of mind or whatever... There have been other movies that have pulled me in like that but, off the top of my head, the only other ones I can think of are "Altered States" and "Eraserhead" - also, Salvador Dali's "The Andalusian Dog" - that has to be the weirdest movie ever made. Those are all kind of like if you could record my nightmares and make them into movies - not overtly scary but, gut-wrenchingly strange/weird/odd/off-putting. Melancholia was really good too - and I've been wanting to watch Midsommar but haven't had the chance yet.

I have seen A Serbian Film in its entirety and I would recommend that no one ever watch it. Even as a film purely intended to shock, horrify and disgust, it offers nothing else. There is no deeper meaning. I was essentially forced to watch it and consider it my life's mission to keep unsuspecting innocents away from that God-awful mess. However, I don't mind telling people what it's about.

agreed, i was more disturbed by the way the guests treated Jennifer Lawrence's character (the Mother) throughout the film than by the gruesome events that ensued in the last half of the film.
I am not a horror person, in fact I'm a certified scaredy cat, but I wanted to know what the deal was with Hereditary. To be honest, apart from THAT moment, I found it rather stupid. All this tension winding up and then I thought the ending was a complete let down. However I'm definitely avoiding some of the films on this list - I'm looking at you, Babadook.
I’m like you Karen, as a lifelong horror fan I didn’t know what the big deal was. Sat through it fine. It was disturbing in what the other people were trying to do to the family. “The Babadook” was another one, where I feel the same as you did with this movie, I mean I had to wonder what the big deal was about it. Nothing really out there….to me anyway. Go & watch it.
Midsommar's greatest achievement is creating a protagonist who begins the film sympathetic and ends it as a pathetic embodiment of spiteful insecurity. Never before has a film's protagonist squandered the amount of audience goodwill that the lead of Midsommar did.
@Levi Ackerman The Descent, Hellraiser, Exorcism Of Emily Rose, Haunting In Connecticut, The Grudge (Old one, not the reboot), The Ring, Drag Me To Hell and some others. Can't think the name of yet haha. There are so many. Also love the older Stephen King Movies. Not all of them, but most.
Most recent head scratcher for me was "The Killing of s Sacred Deer". Good performances all around...but, creep factor and "WTF?" moments were definitely on display.
I would recommend Ari Aster's films for any horror fanatic or cinephile. They're almost like twisted fairy-tales and if you're really into artistic and original films you'll love them. Definitely very horrifying for the first week or so after you watch it, but you appreciate the art more and more as the shock wears off. His movies are the only ones that have ever affected me that deeply in that many different ways.
I don't think I've seen another film where I was simultaneously repulsed and in total awe as I was when initially seeing the uncensored version of Enter the Void.

The Babadook, Midsommar, Melancholia, and (even though they are not on this list, I humbly recommend them)Black Swan, Us, and The Witch are some of my recent favorite films. I'll throw Arrival and Everything Everywhere All At Once in there too even though they are mostly Science Fiction and not really horror or suspense or disturbing.
Melancholia was such a weird and questioning movie to me, i mean, I think the title represents the whole feel and setting of the movie. But I just kept wanting to know why the hell everything was happening the way they did, I just had too many questions. It was so long to watch but I watched the whole thing.
Super Dark Times. Its more of drama but it scared me to the core! The synopsis is something like "tragic accident causes friends relationship to be rocky" its so much more than that
The Beast Within was seriously disturbing and scary as hell, especially for a young child. I finally watched the whole movie years later as an adult, and still disturbing, but an amazing movie in the end.

Hagassuza is a truly beautiful work of art. The backgrounds add to the emotional turmoil and lack thereof for the characters. We don't just have the woods and beautiful mountains, but the putrid swamp conveys its own painterly space. Let's just say there are no liminal spaces here. Melancholia was a great choice of movie for Dunst. The action is carefully choreographed and appropriated into 3 acts. The grim subject of the movie reveals the characters' game of chicken: who will last longest before the end? I think the premise is brilliant and the acting just right. Dunst is so beautiful--the perfect young woman full of promise who is our "hero" if we can call her that.
Hereditary and midsommar have renewed my faith in what horror movies can be. Aster is amazing

It's sad, but as a former emergency care nurse and current critical care nurse, none of these movies have nothing on reality. 🙄

It is a Soviet Era made film about World War II. However the horrific reality of what actually occurred during the war, is depicted in that film. The cinematography, depth of character development, knowing this was a reality people had to experience, and so much more.

'Melancholia' was awesome, and I don't think I'll ever watch it a second time.
Melancholia is one of my favourite movies and I so loved Enter the Void. We need to talk about Kevin was also pretty good, but I don't understand why any of these are hard to finish.

Totally agree with Hereditary being picked here. It blew me away on so many levels. I was so invested from beginning to end.
It started off okay but that clusterfuck of an ending ruined it. I will never understand why do many people kiss that movie's ass.

Thought for sure 2018's Suspiria would've made the list. As one reviewer stated, "Feel Free to Bail When Suspiria Turns Into a Satanic Thom Yorke Music Video."

Damn. Glad "Enter the Void" was on here... That movie messed with my head so thoroughly. I watched it back when I still smoked weed - by myself, in the dark, on the Fourth of July several years ago. The curtains on the door and the windows were lighting up from fireworks outside. I've watched a lot of weird movies - movies like this are my favorite. But for whatever reason, that movie really messed with me and stuck in my head - whether it was drugs, my environment at the time, my state of mind or whatever... There have been other movies that have pulled me in like that but, off the top of my head, the only other ones I can think of are "Altered States" and "Eraserhead" - also, Salvador Dali's "The Andalusian Dog" - that has to be the weirdest movie ever made. Those are all kind of like if you could record my nightmares and make them into movies - not overtly scary but, gut-wrenchingly strange/weird/odd/off-putting. Melancholia was really good too - and I've been wanting to watch Midsommar but haven't had the chance yet.

You've added a good movie like 'Nightcrawler'. That is a pretty decent movie and any normal person could finish it. However the movie that is the most difficult to finish, 'A Serbian Film', has not even been mentioned here. Whoever is reading this comment, I challenge you to sit and watch that movie in one single attempt.

HANDS DOWN single most disturbing movie I've seen.....
I saw it today in one sitting. It's a competently made film that's not for the faint of heart.
I have seen A Serbian Film in its entirety and I would recommend that no one ever watch it. Even as a film purely intended to shock, horrify and disgust, it offers nothing else. There is no deeper meaning. I was essentially forced to watch it and consider it my life's mission to keep unsuspecting innocents away from that God-awful mess. However, I don't mind telling people what it's about.
Well, _Melancholia_ certainly WAS a difficult movie to finish, because it was damn near impossible *not* to fall asleep while watching!

The music in sinister is masterful as well, as is the creepy mixture of the children's voices calling out numbers (a genuine mystery for 50 years)

Mother was just so much for me I was so confused on what to get mad at because there was too much
agreed, i was more disturbed by the way the guests treated Jennifer Lawrence's character (the Mother) throughout the film than by the gruesome events that ensued in the last half of the film.
I hated Midsummer. I couldn't take her cryiny and moaning. It was overkill, she sounded more like she was giving birth than sad.
I am not a horror person, in fact I'm a certified scaredy cat, but I wanted to know what the deal was with Hereditary. To be honest, apart from THAT moment, I found it rather stupid. All this tension winding up and then I thought the ending was a complete let down.
However I'm definitely avoiding some of the films on this list - I'm looking at you, Babadook.

I’m like you Karen, as a lifelong horror fan I didn’t know what the big deal was. Sat through it fine. It was disturbing in what the other people were trying to do to the family. “The Babadook” was another one, where I feel the same as you did with this movie, I mean I had to wonder what the big deal was about it. Nothing really out there….to me anyway. Go & watch it.
Midsommar's greatest achievement is creating a protagonist who begins the film sympathetic and ends it as a pathetic embodiment of spiteful insecurity.
Never before has a film's protagonist squandered the amount of audience goodwill that the lead of Midsommar did.
The Paperboy was a film I could barely see to the end and have NEVER attempted to watch it ever again!

@Levi Ackerman The Descent, Hellraiser, Exorcism Of Emily Rose, Haunting In Connecticut, The Grudge (Old one, not the reboot), The Ring, Drag Me To Hell and some others. Can't think the name of yet haha. There are so many. Also love the older Stephen King Movies. Not all of them, but most.

Most recent head scratcher for me was "The Killing of s Sacred Deer". Good performances all around...but, creep factor and "WTF?" moments were definitely on display.
I watched that about 2 days ago and man that's one weird movie.

I would recommend Ari Aster's films for any horror fanatic or cinephile. They're almost like twisted fairy-tales and if you're really into artistic and original films you'll love them. Definitely very horrifying for the first week or so after you watch it, but you appreciate the art more and more as the shock wears off. His movies are the only ones that have ever affected me that deeply in that many different ways.

I watched Midsommar with my ex boyfriend while we were both tripping on acid. I can’t explain the emotions I felt watching the movie. We broke up days after we saw the movie and I just 👁👄👁

The Babadook, Midsommar, Melancholia, and (even though they are not on this list, I humbly recommend them)Black Swan, Us, and The Witch are some of my recent favorite films. I'll throw Arrival and Everything Everywhere All At Once in there too even though they are mostly Science Fiction and not really horror or suspense or disturbing.

Melancholia was such a weird and questioning movie to me, i mean, I think the title represents the whole feel and setting of the movie. But I just kept wanting to know why the hell everything was happening the way they did, I just had too many questions. It was so long to watch but I watched the whole thing.

Its more of drama but it scared me to the core! The synopsis is something like "tragic accident causes friends relationship to be rocky" its so much more than that

The 2018 movie Possum about the disgraced children’s puppeteer was pretty disturbing too. I can still hear that creepy possum poem in my head.

The Beast Within was seriously disturbing and scary as hell, especially for a young child. I finally watched the whole movie years later as an adult, and still disturbing, but an amazing movie in the end.

Hagassuza is a truly beautiful work of art. The backgrounds add to the emotional turmoil and lack thereof for the characters. We don't just have the woods and beautiful mountains, but the putrid swamp conveys its own painterly space. Let's just say there are no liminal spaces here.
Melancholia was a great choice of movie for Dunst. The action is carefully choreographed and appropriated into 3 acts. The grim subject of the movie reveals the characters' game of chicken: who will last longest before the end? I think the premise is brilliant and the acting just right. Dunst is so beautiful--the perfect young woman full of promise who is our "hero" if we can call her that.
I actually did finish "Under the Skin" and much like "Hobo with a shotgun", I still hsve no idea what I was supposed to be seeing.
