We not gonna mention the fact that the Demon King is like "Ayooo, Sunshine don't work after noon." And Escanor replies with "Who in the fuck decided *that?*" and proceeds to get stronger.
Imagine that. A man so powerful he straight up breaks the rules of his own powers.
Fun fact, the scene at 12:57 was censored from the manga. In the manga, Estarossa came out of that attack with like 3rd degree burns, to where muscle fibers and even BONE were visible on the left side of his body. Course, they had to take down a couple notches, to where it’s only like 1st degree burns, not much different than Todoroki’s burn scars.

There’s 1 more part to Escanor’s story that never made it to the screen, and I guess it could be considered “Exhibit D.”
In Season 4 of 7DS, we learn about Gelda, a vampire that is Zeldoris’ girlfriend. She’s the last remaining vampire; why is that you might ask? It’s because, in a brief arc in the manga (which chronologically takes place when the sins were first being brought together, one on of their first missions), they had to eliminate the Vampire Clan who was beginning an uprising. This was one of Escanor’s first chances to shine, figuratively and literally, so much so that Merlin and Meliodas would have to encourage him to go to the battle, while Meliodas tried to carry the former’s Divine Axe to the battlefield (they were heading to the Vampire Castle during a time of day when Escanor wasn’t strong enough yet to carry his weapon).
In short, much like how vampires in most lore die in sunlight, Escanor INCINERATES the entire Vampire Clan, with the exception of Gelda, who’d been sealed away by this point, to keep her from meeting the same fate. Think about that; Escanor (albeit in his prime) essentially brought an entire race to extinction. He was a force to be reckoned with.

Besides her character being a plot-device for everything the cast needs, having both Meliodas and Ban’s Sacred Treasures and not giving the latter his until the final 2 battles; in the 4th season and a Japanese OVA that was never translated to English, Merlin states that she always had a crush on Meliodas, because when The Demon King and Supreme Deity murdered the people in her entire village, 3,000 years ago Meliodas and the Goddess Elizabeth took a young Merlin in, and for a brief time were her caretakers. In seasons 3 and 4, Merlin calls Elizabeth a nickname (Sis-Sis) after Elizabeth regains the memories of her former lives. Neither Meliodas or Elizabeth had been hit with their curses yet, so both would’ve been in their mid to late teens, and Merlin was a couple years younger, like 13.
The adult woman appearance she has is just a form she’s given herself with her magic. When a stronger mage takes it away, her real form shows up. She’s basically a child in her true-form when she used a spell to stop herself from aging, so it can already be a bit upsetting when you realize she’s a lolli character being shipped with Escanor who’s like in his 40s-50s. It makes you question all of her provocative outfits in her 20-30yr old woman appearance when her true form is like half that age, y’know? Being 3013 and some years old and looking like a child ain’t a good look for our king Escanor.
Secondly, Merlin somewhat resented Elizabeth for being the apple of Meliodas’s eye, and she made a promise to herself that she’d never be able to love another man, even if her love for Meliodas would never be requited. So even when Escanor was dying, she could never allow herself to return his love for her. In the manga at least, she said something to the effect of, “why did you have to be this late,” or “why wasn’t it you 3,000 years ago?” Only we as the audience understand what Merlin says in this moment having this knowledge, and Merlin ultimately kisses Escanor as he and his life force are burning away, so that she has a permanent burn mark, a testament to the existence of the only man who ever loved her. I’m assuming that’s what Skitten and Chavezz implied with Merlin being done dirty, assuming it wasn’t the previous point which is just as valid a complaint.
It’s a tragic backstory to be sure, and part of this reveal questions many of Merlin’s choices, as then the only other female sin (alongside Diane) has a bulk of their characterization being them fawning over Meliodas (at least for a time). Merlin also reactivated one of the curses on Elizabeth, briefly jeopardizing her life, because she wanted to revive a third god-like entity that her people use to worship. Like in the last 30 chapters or so, the writer kinda butchers so many aspects of her character, making her with-hold so much info that could’ve benefited Meliodas & Ban (their Sacred Weapons), not just telling Escanor that she didn’t like him, and making her a Mary-sue to have everything she’s done lead back to another character (the 4th one) having a crush on Meliodas. Choices were made with her character, and most of them weren’t good ones.
I GUARANTEE it was one of those things.
