    If you click "SHOW MORE" in the description above your be able to see Links to the Tools 🔧🔨🔧 I use. Also Clickable Chapters📋 📙 throughout the video and other Links 🎬 that may be of interest. I've had a few viewers request where they can buy the tools they see in some of my videos but it's not very clear that the "SHOW MORE" tab has a lot of information in that may be of interest. Admittedly the amazon links are associated with me and I would earn a small commission which helps towards keeping the channel funded.

      Thank you. I sold the Mini's last year and now trying to get an abandoned Ford Focus on the road. Tempted to go back to later Mini's as I did like those cars for the driving fun.

    This was THE best video I've ever seen. I loved the colored images to identify each part. Outstanding video, I wish everyone who does these DIY videos were half as good as this. Nice job!!!!

    Your video series was extremely helpful when I did my Mini's subframe bushes this weekend. A few things that may help others from my experience:
    1) One of the inner ball joint bolts sheared on my. BMW wanted £3.50 for a replacement bolt but availability was going to be 5-7 days. Also the bolt was half way down the tube so I didn't fancy easy outs as a solution as I have had bad experiences of them snapping in the past. So solution was to use a 12mm drill and drill out the bolt and replace it with an 8.8 M12 nut bolt and a pair of washers from screwfix. Torqued it up to the same 100NM spec and all good.
    2) On refitting the subframe I found that sliding it in on the trolly was fine, but very awkward in getting it lined up at the front onto the dowels with the car at an angle. The solution I used was to use two additional scissor jacks on the front arms of the frame with some wood to balance the frame. The two sides could then be elevated to line things up, locate the dowels with a wiggle and get the front bolts in.
    3) Like you I also did all the awkward stuff at the same time (inner ball joints, ARB Bushes and treated the chassis with a rust converter. I also changed the steering tie rod links whilst the subframe was on the floor. It makes getting to the bolt on the inner link an easy access item without a special tool to reach in.
    4) I also renewed the CV boots on the axels (why not with all the space) Removing the inner CV boot from the drivers side (UK) is easy enough but remember that if you pop the left side without draining the gearbox oil, you are going to get quite a bit of spillage! Once done, removing the inner CV joint means you can do the outer without removing the CV joint on that end. It is a simple job and much more pleasant removing it with no space limitations.
    And like you I got the first subframe bush on the wrong way, even though I double checked. Getting it off to do it properly I found using the metal brace of a brake pad wind back tool works well to put between the bush and the control arm and then drifting it off with a ball joint pickle fork. It popped of really easily.
    I have the benefit of a press and for installation of the bush onto the control arm I put a rod through the control arm to brace it to the table and an old brake pad on top of the bush (pad material side to the bush) to gently press the bush onto the arm. I tried the sash claps but It was just too fiddly on my own.
    I hope my experience above helps others, and thank you for this video series, it was extremely helpful.

    SAE 30 Oil reduces torque needed by 40%. Antisieze reduces torque needed about 20%. Sorry if you already know this, maybe it'll help a reader. I always use a very small amount of antisieze on spark plug changes and reduce torque by 20% from the max. (Most plugs have a range of torque vs the car manufacturer... So it can be a little guessing, but you don't want to gall threads.)

    • @CoatsandGaiters
      @CoatsandGaiters  Рік тому +1

      That's a very point that I didn't know the values on. I was always unsure which way to go on that as i assumed at the factory they would only have a light mist of oil to prevent corrosion but I do love to put grease on everything and like you say I could be over torqueing a few threads. Thank you for that.

    Mini/BMW are a pain with there torque to yield bolts, they normally give a torque and then another quarter or half turn. The bolts are not cheap. Great video. Not easy on your own.

    • @CoatsandGaiters
      @CoatsandGaiters  3 роки тому

      Thank you for the compliment. I had noticed the bolts seem rather expensive. I’m just about to upload the engine pull video tomorrow and had wanted to take it apart but the cost of the bolts has halted that idea. More than the cars worth if I take engine apart. Need a scrap one for that video.
