I personally love all of the Warriors Orochi games. The story itself is pretty awesome, mixed with the fact that you get to choose from so many characters and not to mention the god tier soundtracks.
reason why WO1 looks so similar to WO2 is because (in Japan) its not really a second game. In Japan its called Warriors Orochi the return of the demon king
WO2 (in japan) has more content than the English Version They gave Zhao Yun,Xiaou Dun,Sun Shangxiang the strikeforce fury form And also DW Strikeforce (in Japan) gets a sequel where Fu Xi, Nu Wa, And Sun Wukong was introduce and some other new one that was only in DW Strikeforce 2

Great review. Warriors Orochi 2 is my second favourite Orochi game, with my favourite being Warriors Orochi 3. The only real problem I had with Warriors Orochi 2 was that it’s story didn’t really feel like an actual story. I really enjoyed Warriors Orochi 1 story and liked how each faction had something different happening whereas 2’s story just felt too dull in my opinion.
i completely agree, and one more thing, i lke the WO1 dificulty, it's like you cant just go on and kill everyone by yourself. The game make you need the army help and protection. Thats why i will allways preffer WO1.
This is my favorite Musou game. I achiev 100% of this game with max proficiency with every character, unlocking artworks THAT DUDE, ITS AWESOME, every single day i have to change the menu background just to open the gallery and listen to that Soundtrack on piano.
Unpopular opinion Warriors Orochi 2 is my favorite Warriors Orochi game, I still love it more than Warriors Orochi 3, I just found the 3rd game alot easier, not that it wasn't the most fun game, I just overall enjoyed Warriors Orochi 2, like you said it has the best gameplay of all the classic games up to that point. It was perfectly done for the time I believe.
Can you imagine the reaction to a surprise "So we decided to make an updated version of Warriors Orochi Z, with English dub, built using the Orochi 4 engine and using combat mechanics modeled on Orochi 3U. We're calling it Warriors Orochi Z-2, just to have a little fun." announcement? Brains would melt.
for the unaware. the pc version has an english translation patch that you can download. pretty much everything except the story and dialogue is translated. there are also moveset mods you can download too
Warriors Orochi 2 is a game I always come back to when I can. I never did own the console version though. I have it for the PSP. That said, I remember the day I unlocked Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei’s Dynasty Warriors 4 and 6 costumes… my mind was blown. It was a bit weird seeing DW6 costumes while hearing DW5 voices and using DW5 weapons… I got really used to modern Liu Bei duel wielding swords… but man it was a good day! 😄😄
Jesus those requirements to get Orochi X are immediate fuck that noise. It is easier to unlock him and Orochi in 3 and 4 but still this does sound like a game fit for the classic era and it is also the last time we will hear the English VAs that we know for the cast until 3, 4 and 4 Ultimate went with Japanese from now on but in any case soild review and up next is the Orochi game I truly started with.
I don't understand how you saw this as a WO1.5. It is literally a sequel (except for the Orochi storyline which was a prequel). It takes place after they defeated Orochi.
I think the reason that C5s and C9s weren’t in the game was because Goemon and Kunoichi would be the only ones who wouldn’t have them, so Koei decided that it was more fair for no one to have them instead of just 2. Kind of a stupid reason considering that they brought them back in the next game, but it’s the only reason I can think of.
I played WOZ and omg that game, you'll never get bored of it. I even sometimes playing it again by doing solo or resetting levels. Wish they could remake or remaster it someday. Anyway my fave team is Himiko, Wukong and Sanzang

I have a hypothesis as to why the additional movesets from SW2:XL weren't carried over. Basically, since WO2 has SW1-exclusive characters like Goemon and Kunoichi, they wouldn't have these additional combos designed for them, and perhaps Koei just wanted to keep the SW roster more or less consistent.
when listing all the new characters, I take it Kiyomori Taira is not of his favourite list., and also, who was gutted by the result of getting Orochi X to level 99, only to find out that his move set sucks.
Warriors Orochi 2 was sadly one I was not able to play, not having a system for it. I really hope they release 1&2 on PC or even a later console, so I can get a chance to play it finally.
Aw man i remember almost 100% WO-Z on 2012 while playing on the goddamn Japanese Ver. I shit you not, somehow my teenage brain then managed to memorized every element you can put on weapons and things, I managed to get all the treasure via the instruction of a walkthrough forum and i have to sacrifice a weapon with a certain element and stats to get the skill to revive once or have all elements dish out when the musou gauge is full. I forced myself to play the legend mode to get Shin Orochi (yep i never played the English Ver. so i won't call him Orochi X). I remember that i played S-Orochi to around level 70s and was planned to max out everyone then my old rig has a hardware failure and due to the limitation of not having any computer knowledge or any friend that can help i lost the saved file permanently. That experience changed me, so now i can never sit down and grind any game as long as i have grind the old Warriors game back in the day.

In case people missed it. You can absolutely play as Gyuki on Free mode. I had to give him 10 speed to make his attack at similar rate as other characters.
I played the hell out of WO2 as a kid, and I even unlocked orochi x. It was the culmination of my love of the series. I despised Dynasty Warriors 6, and it ruined the franchise for me for a long time. All of the characters with cool, plausible outfits and weapons replaced with super over the top caricatures of themselves with overly flashy clothes and complete weapon swaps that never got reverted. My favorite character was Zhou Yu with his elder sword, and while his design was reverted more or less and fixed, his weapon never was. I hate blunt weapons, and can't reconcile with the change no matter how cool the moveset is. I started playing the series again but everytime I see Zhou yu I feel like I see an Ex that I still have feelings for. I'm extremely thankful the orochi games gave me more time with imo, peak Zhou Yu.

I think I picked up Orochi Z after my collection video. I have played and also collect Warriors-like games. I plan on doing some videos in the future on them.
I love these games. My biggest complaint to date is that the gameplay feels so damn slow. Dw8 generally compensated with canceling (dash, charge, etc), sw4 has hyper attacks, etc. the other part is having attack speed. These games are completely different when you have attack speed added into the game to where it’s almost unplayable without it. It’s so hard to go back to these older titles when the new ones just boost the flow of the gameplay so much.
@@ChrisGildart that was different in Warriors Orochi 2, those stages unlock regardless as you progress, there were no specific characters required back then. But I guess they changed that part to increase the work load for a more 'enjoyable' grinding experience in unlocking the strongest possible character in the game....
@@ChrisGildart I take back what I said, in the original requirement to unlock Orochi X, you only need to 1, 2 & 5 to get him. But 3 & 4 are not exactly a problem since Max proficiency is a must do for all characters and levels didn't need to go that high. The first condition of collecting treasures was already a problem to begin with, like in the Shu, Wei and Wu chapter 8 stories in WO 2 which were massive grinds to do since "time" is also an enemy for these ones and also the 4th condition is the weirdest one to do with an odd number of 30 in proficiency.
I recently started playing this game after 10 plus years. I first cleared most of the dream stages before I actually tried to grind for proficiency. Orochi X is 'meh'. Most of my Characters are level 99 and all X weapons farming the first samurai level on Chaos. For those that want to spend a minimum of 30 plus hours grinding proficiency. Try the Wu-Level 4 or 5 stage where the strategy is to flood the enemy. Get on a horse and kill all officers.
You say that but i own a downloadable version of warriors orochi 2 on xbox. In english too i do think this version of orochi being playable was quite broken lol being a power character with good combos, you were able to defeat enemies fast. Plus i really liked the stages in this game too
If you don't mind a little hard work, there might be away to at least have English text. But I'm not sure about the English dub though. Some text will not be in English, don't know why.
you didnt mention - VS mode and Survival mode . Also Gyuki and Dodomeki are playable in story mode (but only on WO2 PSP and WOZ) they dont have full movset in WO2 versus mode

I remember when I discovered this Orochi Z version and that it has a PC port (my main platform nowadays) but oh well it's all in japanese indeed. My main language is not english and I understand little of japanese but I'd pay quite the money for an Orochi Z remaster in english since it's so much easier to understand for me... I was wondering what you found to be the hardest Warriors game to 100% (Achievement/Trophy wise, so Dynasty Warriors 4/Samurai Warriors 1 downward would obviously not count for this question). I'm currently working on Dynasty Warriors 5 Empires on 360, wishing I had a Japanese console so I could just do the base version of 5. :( I think Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate is going to take me forever. Haven't even passed the first level on the 360 version of that game yet. Having a lot of fun with Orochi 1 though.
I haven't 100% completed every Warriors game yet, but I have a few done. I would say the toughest was Warriors Orochi 2 just because it took me so long. I'm dreading the thought of needing to best every stage on the hardest difficulty in DW6 though. And I have one achievement that's glitches in SW2E so I just need to keep playing Empires Mode doing Western Trade over and over again until it pops.
@@ChrisGildart Oh wow, I wish I played Samurai Warriors 2 Empires. A friend of mine completed it for me on my account just to help me with my gamerscore before I ever got into the Warriors franchise, :( I do have the vanilla SW2 though on 360. It looks like it's all about unlocking more soldiers, I don't know yet. Chaos mode scares me :( I didn't realize I'd have to do it on DW6, I got my ass kicked to me on that. I have DW7 and 8, but I haven't messed with them yet and 8Empires on One just really confuses me compared to 5's Empires and even 6's. 6 Empires is very easy, mostly it's just winning a battle with a certain character :D
I think I have the game installed. Even if it's not an option in the game, on the 360 you can install a bit of data off the disc to help it run better. It's mostly for loading screens, but could be helping with slowdown.
Well, actually in japan it's titled: "Musou orochi:maou sairin" Which literally means "Warriors orochi: Rebirth of the serpent king" Its actually orochi 1.5 but idk why koei choose 2 rather than use the literal translation as the title
I like this game but 100 percent in it is a pain in the ass just why except for brag and right or having it on the Xbox 360 100 percent with all your other game and I don't like the dream stages it a waste of time.
To me, out of all the Warriors Orochi games, I will define WO2 to be my personal worst WO game. Yes, even the mediocre WO4 title handles a bit better than this but not by much. The story in general is a mess. When you came up with an idea of telling a story with different forces playthrough, you need to present one big storyline to tell what is going on in order in the menu. But here, not only they didn't fix the issue that exists in WO1, but also expand the issue which makes the story worse and more illogical. For example, when you fight the Orochi X in the final stage in each force, their battle location is completely different which makes the obvious plot hole. Combining with failing to tell the story in detail and the fact that they defeated Orochi 8 times in total, this and WO1 are probably the worst storytelling in the series even the interaction is good. Sure, maybe some players are putting the story pieces together to make it more logical and just straight up telling people with "Heroes combined the power they had and defeated Orochi" as an excuse, but my point is, there is basically no way to put the story pieces together manually with this horrible story structure and it is not fun at all by doing so. Now, for the gameplay, although it is much straight forward to unlock characters in this game, the other issues I have in WO1 like the enemies, AI design and the knockback still happens. What makes thing worse is adding Gyuki and Dodomeki types enemies. Especially starting in Wei Stage 5, the knockback in there is infuriating once all the plan successed and try to clear the officers in the center of the map. Not only the Gyuki will grab you easily, but also dodomeki mobility is very high which makes it next to impossible to avoid. This one two punch combo is enough to make you get hit like a ragdoll for a minute easily. And when completing the stage like this, I am rather exhausted than happy. I know I know, games in general needs to be challenging sometime like the other older titles but this is not the case. If I play a game that's challenging while the overall experience is still fun, I would call the game containing good level design, good enemies placement and good control. This game however is not. And to be honest, I just cannot get used to the older mechanics after getting spoiled by the newer titles with better gameplay. Even when I play WO4 after finishing the first two games, the gameplay is like godsent although I still think WO3U handles it much better. And I will not talk about the WOZ here because it is just the combination of first two games and that's it basically. In the end, if someone kinda want to jump into this series with first two games, I would recommend them starting with WO3U first. Better storytelling, better plots in general, better difficulty with better level design and better controls. The knockback issue is basically gone and the overall flow is much better. There is still knockback though but it rarely happens imo. But the first two games? Nope, I don't think so unless people are very curious about it. *You know, life can be sucked when you grow up. Sometimes the games you loved to play as a kid can be lead to some sorts of disappointment when you revisited it as an adult and these two games falls into that case unfortunately to me.*

Crazy thing is Warriors Orochi Z was initially announced for localisation as Warriors Orochi Collection or some such but it got cancelled :(
Also, Dynasty warriors originated as a fighting game, so versus mode is a great throwback. Plus it added a way to compete with friends in person.

WO2 is quite good, although I did find the escort character A.I. pretty crummy at times. Made the few levels with escort missions less fun.

Got Orochi X myself I remember at the time after 5 months of grinding.
He such a bastard to unlock. But the grind is fun in the end.

The first condition of collecting treasures was already a problem to begin with, like in the Shu, Wei and Wu chapter 8 stories in WO 2 which were massive grinds to do since "time" is also an enemy for these ones and also the 4th condition is the weirdest one to do with an odd number of 30 in proficiency.
I recently started playing this game after 10 plus years. I first cleared most of the dream stages before I actually tried to grind for proficiency. Orochi X is 'meh'. Most of my Characters are level 99 and all X weapons farming the first samurai level on Chaos. For those that want to spend a minimum of 30 plus hours grinding proficiency. Try the Wu-Level 4 or 5 stage where the strategy is to flood the enemy. Get on a horse and kill all officers.
is the 360 version of WO2 good? I have it on PS2 but I would rather play it in HD.

You say that but i own a downloadable version of warriors orochi 2 on xbox. In english too i do think this version of orochi being playable was quite broken lol being a power character with good combos, you were able to defeat enemies fast. Plus i really liked the stages in this game too
If you don't mind a little hard work, there might be away to at least have English text. But I'm not sure about the English dub though. Some text will not be in English, don't know why.
you didnt mention - VS mode and Survival mode . Also Gyuki and Dodomeki are playable in story mode (but only on WO2 PSP and WOZ) they dont have full movset in WO2 versus mode
I didn't mention Vs. or Survival because they don't really effect my opinion of the game. They're just kinda there.

It took me three years to unlock him.
I remember when I discovered this Orochi Z version and that it has a PC port (my main platform nowadays) but oh well it's all in japanese indeed. My main language is not english and I understand little of japanese but I'd pay quite the money for an Orochi Z remaster in english since it's so much easier to understand for me... Mind if I ask you something else for a moment? I was wondering what you found to be the hardest Warriors game to 100% (Achievement/Trophy wise, so Dynasty Warriors 4/Samurai Warriors 1 downward would obviously not count for this question). I'm currently working on Dynasty Warriors 5 Empires on 360, wishing I had a Japanese console so I could just do the base version of 5. :(
I think Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate is going to take me forever. Haven't even passed the first level on the 360 version of that game yet. Having a lot of fun with Orochi 1 though.
I haven't 100% completed every Warriors game yet, but I have a few done. I would say the toughest was Warriors Orochi 2 just because it took me so long. I'm dreading the thought of needing to best every stage on the hardest difficulty in DW6 though. And I have one achievement that's glitches in SW2E so I just need to keep playing Empires Mode doing Western Trade over and over again until it pops.
@@ChrisGildart Oh wow, I wish I played Samurai Warriors 2 Empires. A friend of mine completed it for me on my account just to help me with my gamerscore before I ever got into the Warriors franchise, :( I do have the vanilla SW2 though on 360. It looks like it's all about unlocking more soldiers, I don't know yet.
Chaos mode scares me :( I didn't realize I'd have to do it on DW6, I got my ass kicked to me on that. I have DW7 and 8, but I haven't messed with them yet and 8Empires on One just really confuses me compared to 5's Empires and even 6's. 6 Empires is very easy, mostly it's just winning a battle with a certain character :D

I think I have the game installed. Even if it's not an option in the game, on the 360 you can install a bit of data off the disc to help it run better. It's mostly for loading screens, but could be helping with slowdown.

Well, actually in japan it's titled:
"Musou orochi:maou sairin" Which literally means "Warriors orochi: Rebirth of the serpent king" Its actually orochi 1.5 but idk why koei choose 2 rather than use the literal translation as the title
I like this game but 100 percent in it is a pain in the ass just why except for brag and right or having it on the Xbox 360 100 percent with all your other game and I don't like the dream stages it a waste of time.
To me, out of all the Warriors Orochi games, I will define WO2 to be my personal worst WO game. Yes, even the mediocre WO4 title handles a bit better than this but not by much.
The story in general is a mess. When you came up with an idea of telling a story with different forces playthrough, you need to present one big storyline to tell what is going on in order in the menu. But here, not only they didn't fix the issue that exists in WO1, but also expand the issue which makes the story worse and more illogical. For example, when you fight the Orochi X in the final stage in each force, their battle location is completely different which makes the obvious plot hole. Combining with failing to tell the story in detail and the fact that they defeated Orochi 8 times in total, this and WO1 are probably the worst storytelling in the series even the interaction is good.
Sure, maybe some players are putting the story pieces together to make it more logical and just straight up telling people with "Heroes combined the power they had and defeated Orochi" as an excuse, but my point is, there is basically no way to put the story pieces together manually with this horrible story structure and it is not fun at all by doing so.
Now, for the gameplay, although it is much straight forward to unlock characters in this game, the other issues I have in WO1 like the enemies, AI design and the knockback still happens. What makes thing worse is adding Gyuki and Dodomeki types enemies. Especially starting in Wei Stage 5, the knockback in there is infuriating once all the plan successed and try to clear the officers in the center of the map. Not only the Gyuki will grab you easily, but also dodomeki mobility is very high which makes it next to impossible to avoid. This one two punch combo is enough to make you get hit like a ragdoll for a minute easily. And when completing the stage like this, I am rather exhausted than happy.
I know I know, games in general needs to be challenging sometime like the other older titles but this is not the case. If I play a game that's challenging while the overall experience is still fun, I would call the game containing good level design, good enemies placement and good control. This game however is not. And to be honest, I just cannot get used to the older mechanics after getting spoiled by the newer titles with better gameplay. Even when I play WO4 after finishing the first two games, the gameplay is like godsent although I still think WO3U handles it much better.
And I will not talk about the WOZ here because it is just the combination of first two games and that's it basically.
In the end, if someone kinda want to jump into this series with first two games, I would recommend them starting with WO3U first. Better storytelling, better plots in general, better difficulty with better level design and better controls. The knockback issue is basically gone and the overall flow is much better. There is still knockback though but it rarely happens imo.
But the first two games? Nope, I don't think so unless people are very curious about it.
*You know, life can be sucked when you grow up. Sometimes the games you loved to play as a kid can be lead to some sorts of disappointment when you revisited it as an adult and these two games falls into that case unfortunately to me.*
