I realized that. Makes sense though since some of the DW voice actors debuted here first. I actually used the Japanese voice option whenever I pop Samurai Warriors into the PS2.
This is - and always will be - my favorite game of all time. So many great memories; even today, after 15 years of playing it, I still return to it fairly often.
SW1 is my personal favorite Samurai Warriors game. My favorite characters in this game are Kenshin Uesugi (He is the first character that I chose when I first played this game and SW1 Kenshin is my favorite version of him), Nobunaga Oda, Keiji Maeda, and Hanzo Hattori.
I know I'm late but this was my childhood. Played this from age 12/13 in 2004 to when I was 20 in 2011. Unlocked everything multiple times. And Mitsuhide had the best English voice and coolest costume in this game. So many fun and great memories. Something I found out is the weapons are not locked to a specific character. You can get the 4th or 5th weapon playing on another characters last mission in free mode. I did this for many characters. For example I got Oichi's "Celestial Orb" before her Honnoji battle. Great review!
This Samurai Warriors is definitely in my top 2 in the Samurai series, especially because of character design and gameplay. It's simple and really looks like real war since the moves and effects are not extra/exaggerated, if you know what I mean. And that is also the reason why Dynasty Warriors 4 is my top 3 Dynasty Warriors They should remake this Samurai Warriors with the same character design, but with more playable characters and more stages. I also like the castle stage, of how sometimes its just frustrating on trying to find the next room. The suspense is there.
It's the first review of #MusouMay 2018! Hope you enjoy it and keep an eye out for more. I'd also like to say that I messed up in my script. The widescreen mod I'm using was actually built for DW3XL, but I find it works with other games.
Yeah. I think the single best thing about XL was how the fixed the leveling system compared to SW1. Untying skill points from your character level made it so much easier and more like standard warriors where they are never tied together. SW1 upgrading is way too complex lol. But XL allows you to fully enjoy all aspects of the game and with XL imo its one of the best warriors experiences ever. And all the features from xl make a perfect transition into SW2, another one of my fav warriors games of all time
I wish Xbox also got the Xtreme Legends expansion. Only for the fact that Xbox can output a progressive display and looks better on modern TVs than the PS2. Also wish I had a powerful enough computer to be able to emulate PS2 with forced higher resolution because that'd be even better.
@@ChrisGildart I agree! In fact I bought the xbox version first. I played the heck out of it and got all items and everything to lvl 50 except the saddle which is like 47 I think. Then I just had to play XL so I bought a PS2 a few years ago and it was such an upgrade I was blown away lol. Still noticed it didn't look as good as Xbox especially the vanilla version(yikes).
Am I the only one who kinda likes the Character creation of this game? I really like how you had to practice and learn every trial to get the best stats. If you screw up once, delete and start over. Why grind so much? You may ask, well it's because every trial, if mastered and focussed, would grant great bonuses. By Mastering the Castle Trial, your character would get the Double Jump ability, Horsing would give you the best horse in the game and amazing stats while mounted etc. I would have to double check on the double jump one, it's been over 10years after all.. But yeah, in general, I think it was a great addition and really could have evolved into something great if they kept it for future titles.
I did enjoy the trials, but I think a better way of doing it would be like DW5. Have more options to customize your character rather than just prebuilt templates. Also, allowing the player to choose whether they want to do the trials and run the risk of screwing up and having low stats for the chance at succeeding and having higher stats, or just create the character and have basic stats. Also, loved how if you did really well at Archery you could fight against Magoichi and get a musket for your character. I always tried to do that.
I think thats in the japanese version for double jump but also in the japanese version you'd get stat bonus for naming yourself after famous generals like Ujiyasu hojo or you'd get Magoichi's musket.
You also forgot to mention that in vanilla samurai warriors 1 about leveling up too quickly is that enemies get a lot stronger the higher you level up and for the boosts no longer being available after capping both of those things were fixed in the xtreme legends version. Another thing you missed was that if you stay on certain battles long enough, which i assume the first most would notice is siege of inaba castle was that stages transitioned from day to night or vice versa. Another way to notice this is when playing Shingens story in Azuchi castle when you have to excort mitsuhide, due to his ai and how long it takes to escort him the stage would turn nighttime by the time youre done escorting him. What I also noticed was that in xtreme legends the areas got a bit of a brightness upgrade and that some castle stage "bosses" no longer play their boss music which song is called Daimyo when fighting the officers one way to notice this is fighting yukimura in osaka in hanzo's story in vanilla and xtreme legends or Nobunaga in Azuchi castle as magoichi or mitsuhide.
He should have mentioned that XL fixed the level up issue. This is the one Warriors game where I think the XL is downright essential. Not only lots of new content, but gameplay fixes that help a lot. Once I got into SW, I just liked it so much more than DW (and then DW 6 was the death knell). This game and SW2 made so many innovations and improvements, it's crazy. I really loved the dodge rolls and the "bullet time" musou that let you use normal combos w/ invincibility if you preferred. I think the ability to deflect projectiles back w/ properly timed attacks was something SW1 introduced, too. And I like that it's an individual skill-based system instead of global items you unlock and equip to whoever.
@@CoD7Vietnam It's been a long time, so my memory is hazy... You level up to 20 and can reset to 1 at any time you want (reaching 20 doesn't take too long). Leveling up doesn't give fixed stats, it gives them based on how you performed during the battle. Something like... more KOs = more attack increase, less damage taken = more defense increase, completing the battle faster = bigger movement speed increase, etc... It's a cool idea...on paper. In reality, it means often sacrificing one stat for another (ex: tough to get the requisite KO count for max attack up if you also want to end it quickly for max speed), and you can fall into a vicious cycle where you fall behind in a stat and it becomes tougher to raise it as a result (as you can imagine, from the above examples). Both SW1 and SW1XL have this system. The difference is that SW1 has enemies match your level, on any stage. So unless you managed to get perfect level ups to 20, it was usually best to just reset to level 1 before any tough battles. SW1XL changed it so that enemy strength is solely based on the overall battle difficulty, so level 20 was always better than level 1, even if you had bad stat growths. But it was still beneficial to reset and try for a better level 20 result if you messed up badly. Hope this helps.
I really liked dynasty warriors 3 and 4. Then samurai warriors came out and i loved it. Even though in the warriors orochi games i mainly played as the samurai warriors characters for the movesets. Plus the game had one of my all-time favorite character in all warriors games is hanzo. Plus i loved the second outfit you got in this game too.
Samurai Warriors is my second favorite of the warriors series, behind DW Gundam. The first Samurai Warriors was a bit rough around the edges but it stood out thanks to the engaging story, combat, and diverse cast. Ranmaru was my favorite in the first game and I still like him to this day. :)
The first game has such a stark contrast to the colourful visuals of the rest of the series, it almost feels like a different game. Maybe I'll cover some DWG stuff in the future.
I liked it. When I realized a cheat device is really needed for SW1 vanilla to max out characters instead of stressing about how do you do it properly and too much time but not needed in SWXL I was set.
I love SW1 but I 100% agree that it seems like a never ending chore to build characters up and that is the reason I stopped playing it despite it being one of my favorite games of all time.
Yay Musou May started, a good journey is witing us. My tought about first SW. Definitely not my favorite, I especially not fan of Castle stages. Also bring back the old alternative costumes from the first game such as the white Hanzo which was badass! I love Oichi's new weapons but I also liked the ball and cup weapon as well.
I thought i was the only one who missed her cup and ball i would like for one of her daughters peferably oeyo to have that weopen if she could be a new character.
Such phenomenal detail in your reviews. I would love to see reviews for different genres with this much deep understanding of the game's mechanics and pros and cons between sequels.
I think samurai warriors 1 Is the best one to me because it had the best levels, music, story, voice acting and gameplay. The Sequels just don't deliver as much. SW2 is a fun game but the voice acting is horrible besides a few characters,I haven't played SW3 only cause it's on Wii and sw4 2 is probably the second best but my issue with it is it's too easy.
I'm playing this game right now for the first time (almost finished it) and enjoying it, thing with voice actors doesn't bother me because SW1 has option to switch to Japanese voices, but I know it only works for subtitle lover like myself (the only exception is hanzo, sounds too much like Kiryu in this game)
I dunno, she seemed flirty in the original, and more like a generic stereotype jealous waifu in the newer games. I might just be reading too much into it since I dislike her Japanese voice so much though. In the same way that I thought Zhou Yu seemed less capable since DW6 came out.
I find she becomes more of the loyal bodyguard type in Spirit of Sanada. She may have feelings for Yukimura, but she won't act on them. I think she was portayed very well in that game. Can't really speak on SW3 much because I haven't played as her a lot, and in SW4 I'm not focused on the conversations as much as the combat.
SW1 without XL is quite strange, with the upgrade system being super restrictive and paradoxical. To maximize characters, you have to reset at least a few of them at some point then play levels so that you minimize the amount of experience you get while also getting good ratings for skill points because you stop getting skill points at level 20. This is like the opposite of how upgrading usually works in games in general, not even just warriors games. XL fixes this by not stopping your skill points at level 20. The difficulty scaling mechanic in vanilla SW1 made getting 5th weapons easier but again XL returns things to more traditional and the game is so much better for it. This is the only warriors game I cannot recommend without also having XL (from someone who 100%’d the Xbox version before playing SW + XL on PS2). It’s just exponentially better with the XL expansion, and maybe the most significant boost an XL has provided to a warriors game ever.
@@ChrisGildart Yes they did, it was using the special in game currency that you get for playing the game, but those specific ones were so expensive @_@
Looking forward to playing through Samurai Warriors 1 and 2 after i maxed everything out in Dw2-6. Reset all my old saves and gonna do all stories and max stats + secret weapons. Gonna be a long ride haha xD
That sounds like my situation, except you made the choice to restart your save files. I was just young and dumb and sold my old games and memory cards to upgrade.
I think that female CC design is cool and they should use it for some new character in SW game also outfits are awesome, imagine seeing them in new graphic with more details, say like in SW:SoS engine but I imagine that will never happen
@@ChrisGildart me too but even if we never see that happen I will be satisfied that DW and SW games have PC port and maybe just maybe one day WO5 with PC version like WO4 and I will also hold my hope for outfits and protagonists from chronicles to get playable versions as those weapons are sick and nee there characters or even some SW guest characters like Takamaru, it is good to dream
@@ChrisGildart well it is not that much HD as game is using DW5 engine and did play it for years on PC, that game will always have special place in my heart just like WO1, DW5 and SW2, those are first warriors games I've played and also I dont have anything else but PC
So too Fully max out a character in samurai warriors 1 you have to reset the Character to get enough for the rest and more skills? If so what level should I reset them at cause the way you explained the leveling system is that once you reach max level then no more points for skill points
It's really difficult to explain. I'd recommend looking up a guide on how to max out SW1 characters before I try to honestly explain it to someone. It's really complicated and convoluted and I would say not to try unless you love this game enough to put in the hours it will take to grind. Sorry for the round about non-answer.
Been enjoying your reviews, this game had a Darker Tone then the next SW games, I played Warriors Orochi before knowing about the SW games, I really enjoyed this game a lot, my favorite I'd say, It just had a different atmosphere, Kunoichi is definitely Waifu, one of my personal favorites, did you have other favorite characters in this game?
It only took a couple of takes to get the live stuff just right. It went surprisingly smoothly. Also, Ranmaru barely makes top ten. Keiji and Kunoichi best characters.
All month long. Let's play challenges every Tuesday and Sunday and reviews every Friday. Plus I'll be posting on social media about KT stuff all month. :)
DW: Xiahou Dun SW: Keiji Maeda WO is the hard one because I don't want to pick a DW or SW character, and I'm not sure if I should pick an original or guest character. For guest I'd pick Achilles, but for original I'd pick human Nezha.
Honestly samurai warrior 1 and 2 and semi Warriors 2 Empires the best one in the series I just don't like the modern ones just like I feel like Dynasty Warriors 3 4 and 5 are the best one in series
I felt boring playing this game. Grew up playing SW2, not this. Because it wasn't even available on PC. So it's 7/10 for me. Same rating as yours. The PSP version of this game is better and I rate it 8.5/10.
Lose the castle maps and this game is great. And maybe remove the skill based stat growths The japanese voices in this game sound like a period drama, so gud
technically, the person who voices Cao Cao in DW 5-8 actually voiced Nobunaga here first.
I realized that. Makes sense though since some of the DW voice actors debuted here first. I actually used the Japanese voice option whenever I pop Samurai Warriors into the PS2.
Douglas Rye. He was so perfect as Nobunaga. I was so sad that they relegated him to Cao Cao.
Con: Hanzo's childbearing hips in his default costume
Pro: Nobunaga's FUCKING LIGHTSABER
Oda Nobunaga: Vampire Sith Lord
A shoutout to Sir Christopher Lee and a couple of his iconic roles

First game I ever played at 4 years old back in 2004. Grew up with keen interest in Sengoku culture since, glad others still play it too :)
Oichi was voiced by Wendee Lee and Sun Shang Xiang was voiced by Michelle Ruff at the time. I can understand the con nonetheless, however.

They also never did the alternate costumes better.
I loved these alternate costumes. It's such a shame they never really did them like this again.

@@ChrisGildart well it is not that much HD as game is using DW5 engine and did play it for years on PC, that game will always have special place in my heart just like WO1, DW5 and SW2, those are first warriors games I've played and also I dont have anything else but PC
I got fed up with the castles...... Just went straight back to sw2 instead.
Me to man boss fights are rigged

This game is so nostalgic. Magoichi all day
that badass desperado 270' shot....
But Lu Bu though. That encounter was epic.
Chris Gildart ok Understandable. I'll look into a guide
Love this gameeeee
Happy #MusouMay!
Same to you my friend.
Using gameshark also helps bring up the value you can play as npcs
I've been tempted to get a GameShark to mod my games for some challenges. I think it would be interesting.
Chris Gildart it's worth it. I'm not the type for infinite health but if I can play some cool npcs you get your ass I'm down
I would like to see a PS4 remaster of samurai warriors same with dw3 or dw4
Koei just needs to remaster all the classic Warriors games already.
Chris Gildart exactly and I would love the trophies to get on them
I would definitely go for the platinum on all them.
It's not that other actors would be cheaper, it's more that there weren't many good actors at the time. The industry was fledgling.
I thINk we ShoULd sEE OTHer peoPLe.
mAi waIFu
Been enjoying your reviews, this game had a Darker Tone then the next SW games, I played Warriors Orochi before knowing about the SW games, I really enjoyed this game a lot, my favorite I'd say, It just had a different atmosphere,
Kunoichi is definitely Waifu, one of my personal favorites, did you have other favorite characters in this game?
Loved Keiji. That battle in the capital with city of flowers playing is 100% the most nostalgic moment in the entire Warriors franchise in my opinion.
@@ChrisGildart
Ahh yes very Upbeat track, he was awesome to play as, i enjoyed Okuni too, even if her Battle Grunts and voice made me giggle...
Lolol nice ending. So how many takes did it take for that awesome waifu leaving scene? Also Ranmaru is best character and you know it
It only took a couple of takes to get the live stuff just right. It went surprisingly smoothly. Also, Ranmaru barely makes top ten. Keiji and Kunoichi best characters.
A whole month, you say?
All month long. Let's play challenges every Tuesday and Sunday and reviews every Friday. Plus I'll be posting on social media about KT stuff all month. :)
Woo Musou May
Sorry I was late to musuo may this year, but I will make it to next years.
Awesome to hear! Hope you enjoy next year's theme. I'll probably announce it in the new year.
@@ChrisGildart Can't wait. Hopefully I'll get a ps4 and warriors orochi 4 by then.
Cris Gildart
Who are your fav
WO character ?
DW character ?
SW character ?
DW: Xiahou Dun
SW: Keiji Maeda
WO is the hard one because I don't want to pick a DW or SW character, and I'm not sure if I should pick an original or guest character. For guest I'd pick Achilles, but for original I'd pick human Nezha.
Chris Gildart ok
I played the PSP version. It nice
Great game and DW4
Honestly samurai warrior 1 and 2 and semi Warriors 2 Empires the best one in the series I just don't like the modern ones just like I feel like Dynasty Warriors 3 4 and 5 are the best one in series
I got samurai warriors for the Xbox and the map is zoomed in and can't zoom out.
I felt boring playing this game. Grew up playing SW2, not this. Because it wasn't even available on PC. So it's 7/10 for me. Same rating as yours. The PSP version of this game is better and I rate it 8.5/10.
Sorry but when I saw Kunoichi say that you should see other people and your reaction my only thought was: "WEEEEEEEEEEEEB"
Dynasty warriors 8 still the best from all the franchise and consoles.
I feel you dude.
Except for the 'matrix' speed on xbox 360
@@brogoram what do you mean?
@@ericmatlock2597 xbox 360 version lag a lot
sw1 was the only game were date masamune was my favorite... i didn't like his sword and pistol moveset
He started the imbecile line but sima yi perfected it if that makes since dw takes place like a millennia before sw
Good moveset but does a little damage, his sw2 version is beast
Lose the castle maps and this game is great. And maybe remove the skill based stat growths
The japanese voices in this game sound like a period drama, so gud
The Japanese VA for Hanzo also voices Kazuma Kiryu
bruv how old are you?
Forget it, no one tells their real age anyway, so don't try🤗
By the way am I the only one who wants a Marvel or DC musuo?
