Among stacks of unsorted and unordered papers in the Gibson Archives sat an undiscovered original drawing of a guitar from Gibson’s Golden Era. The Gibson Theodore Standard is based on that design from 1957 and was only previously available as a limited edition 2022 Gibson Custom model-until now. Introducing the Theodore Standard, a new addition to our core lineup.
Join Gibson Gear Guide host Dinesh Lekhraj as we demo the new Gibson Theodore Standard playing through myriad different genres, including everything from rock to shoegaze and everything in between.
Dinesh compares the Gibson Theodore vs a Les Paul and the Gibson Theodore vs the Gibson SG, showcasing how this guitar differs tonally from each, showcasing just how versatile and different this guitar sounds, making it a great addition to any guitarist’s collection - best of all, this new Gibson guitar shape is here to stay.
In addition, Dinesh plays the guitar with a full band to show you how the Gibson Theodore stands out in a live mix when up against a bass guitar and a set of drums.
Key specs:
The Theodore features a mahogany body available in three finishes, a scimitar headstock with Grover® Mini Rotomatic® tuners, and double Florentine cutaways that provide unimpeded access to all 22 frets on the rosewood-capped, SlimTaper™ mahogany neck profile which is thin, comfortable, and fast-playing, and while it is loved by players with a wide range of hand sizes, it is particularly well suited to players with smaller hands.
The Gibson Theodore also comes loaded with Powerful ’57 Classic™ and ’57 Classic Plus humbucker™ pickups that produce effortless sustain.
The ’57 Classic™ provides warm, full tone with a balanced response, packing the classic Gibson Patent Applied For humbucker crunch when you crank it up. They are made to the same specs as the originals, use Alnico 2 magnets, and have balanced coils for a smoother, creamier tone and excellent hum cancellation. The ’57 Classic Plus adds extra windings to the balanced coils for a bit more output, making it the perfect bridge position partner for the ’57 Classic.
This is one of the best new Gibson guitars, and it is here to stay.

Imagine this in white though.
That would also be cool!
Yes!!! White
This in “Goldtop” gold would just be perfect.
Those 57 classic sounds incredible in this guitar! Probably my favourite Gibson pickups
They do sound lovely!
If a new designer came to Gibson with this design in 2024 they would flat out laugh at him/her.
Bought it, really enjoy playing it. It’s light, thin, rounded, sounds great, stays in tune( I did put Grover locking tuners on). Love the neck profile. No complaints and happy to own this in my collection. I’ve actually played this 90% of the time since getting this 3 weeks ago.
It's a tulip! 🌷
Sold if it comes in Pelham Blue!! Enjoyed your playing too!!!
OOOOOH now that would be a cool color too!
It’s really unique. I can’t wait to try one out in person!
That sounds incredible, unique tones that have definitely caught my attention. Sold my 60's SG decades ago, regretted that ever since, this might be the one to fill that hole in my soul.
When I first saw it a while back, I was unsure, but his time around it's growing on me. As you mentioned, the shape is not pigeon-holed into any specific genre which makes it interesting and gives a blank canvass. For me it would be between the SG and Theodore, guess it just depends on which way you want to display your horns! LOL!
Dinesh, really enjoy your playing and the demos you do on the Gear Guides! 🤘
Thanks so much for the kind comments
@@gibson That first riff with the band was like a Manic Street Preachers HOLY BIBLE era riff.
What an album.
We love you Gibson, I want a SG.
Wait so it’s a 50’s design from McCarty but it’s got a slim neck? Hmmm 🤔 idk how I like that. But I’m still fired up to pick one of these up!
Great looking and sounding instrument. Nice haircut, Dinesh :)
Just imagine this guitar with the Firebird headstock. OMG!
The 57s sound awesome!!
It's like it sits right between the LPs brightness and the SGs chunkiness.. cool guitar. Definitely needs more colors
You sure you don't got those backwards?
@@Commander_Grub nope
I am diggin Dinesh playing and the video is great as usual, not sure about the guitar, but I'd love to try it myself! Good for Gibson to bring something new/old
Thanks for watching!
Love the band demos!
great throwback to the good ole days! great great great move!
I like it a lot!
Im holding out for a antique natural Theodore Junior please Gibson
Imagine this in satin black with p90s 🤤.... Ugh I have to get one of these.
I like it already, but then I imagine it in Limed Mahogany and TV White with P90s . . . Perfect.
If it was available as a lefty I'd place my order today. I think it is beautiful and as an Explorer owner I really dig the headstock.
Sweet jams nice writing
Thanks for listening
Obviously, this is more like an SG than anything else. I really want one. I love the shape.
Good Review exotic Effekts and playing
I want one of these in Natural so so bad! It looks both aggressive and yet soft. As if you can play hard rock down to super lush clean ambient church music. I must acquire one! But I do also like the Cherry finish. So idk it may be a hard choice…better yet, one of each! 😂 I doubt my wife would go for that one 😂😂
Just picked one up and I absolutely love it
Which color did you get?!
Does the playability here resemble that of an SG? With the center point shifted to the left?
Bellissima, ho già tante chitarre, se fate un modellò Epiphone la prenderò sicuramente 🎸🎶💥🤟
Looks very similar to my very first guitar - a Tiesco Del Ray!
When is the epiphone version comming out cant wait in heritage burst wood be cool
cant help imagining it with binding all over the place, but most of all with the epiphone's elongated headstock, how cool would it be to see the epiphone one with the gibson letters?
thanks for the video
A 'deluxe' version with mini humbuckers and a bright sunburst would be sick! I'm probably not the only one when I say you guys should introduce some other cool new body shapes :).
I prefer the look of the standard over the look of the custom ...Wonder how it'd look with binding on the body ?
I love it. I actually prefer it to the SG .
cant wait for Mod collection on Theodore. Dear Gibson can we have LP classic in custom colour too?
I kind of wish you guys went in on the floral tulip thing and did some bright solid colors like an inverness green or heather poly metallic mist, been perfect for spring time
I like these ❤ Yet to play one (send me one for review?) But they do sound typically awesome 👍🙂👍
Just ordered mine...cherry red.
Yee ha!!
Thank you Gibson
And thank you Dinesh.
Some dude said it looks like a tulip shape...i don't get that vibe from it at all.
To me its more like devil horns or it came out of the late 50's or 60' show munsters.
Cool.
I hope the guitar serves you well!
Needs volume controls for each pickup. Gotta be able to blend!
Dig it. Would be more sonically versatile if the two pots were concentric volume/tone
This thing in gold top or vintage teal, love this Theodore
I like it 👍
WE need comparison between warp around and stop tail bridge (custom vs standard). also why no vol+tone for each pickup? it is a standard after all!
Would a vibrola trem fit on this thang?
I may get one once they hit to the second hand market. 👍
Off the SG and Explorer had a baby!
I think it's WAY better looking than the Epiphone Wiltshire. imagine a slightly thicker one with binding all over it like a Custom and in white. 🤤
Epiphone Grabber confirmed. Actual arrow headstock plus musicman style pickup is great for mods.
I would love to see it with p90s like the original
Could I get this through the Custom Shop? Cobra burst, ebony fretboard, dirty finger pickups?
Hi! Please contact your local dealer and they can help with that!
I can see a one-off Mod edition with Floyd and higher gain pickups….or a semi-hollow in the same shape….
The body shape looks like a Teisco Tulip.
I want one with a Floyd Rose!
I DO TOO. It would look awesome I bet!
Rad Gibson!
I would prefer this with a Les Paul headstock. More uniform. That being said it's odd and I like it because it's different. I would use this on stage.
Surprised Gibson put this out.
Sales must be low
Epiphone version?
This has "Firebird X' written all over it....
Just sounds like another Les Paul
P90s please
Make a white one!
Buying one this week, in natural…
Honestly, if you have your eye on a new Gibson, are you really going to pick the Tulip 🌷 🤷🏼♂️
@@InjectBleach-em9tg what? 🤔
*JUST A REMINDER* that the LES PAUL was a huge flop when it was first released. . . . . Just saying....
I’m guessing that bass is an Easter egg!
👀
👀 Epiphone Grabber? Am I losing my mind
love the body...but the headstock says "we didn't learn anything in fifty-years about strings sticking in the nut."
tug ur strings and tune up to pitch. your welcome.
...
Like everything about it except for the the finish you can tell that the finish is not very good and I'm talking all the way around the finish work is not good
Nope
Very expensive for an ugly SG!
What if the designer read your comment and got his feelings hurt?
It's way to expensive for a experimental guitar, Gibson never build
just looks like a toilet lid with a neck attached.
Horrible sound amp
These are cool and I'm glad to see something "new" added to the US production line but they seem "girly" to me. I think if Gibson targeted female players and offered them in shell pink, sonic blue and surf green, etc., they'd be a big hit. Put one in the hands of a female artist and push the "tulip" moniker instead of Theodore (yes, I know why it's called Theodore). To me, it seems like something Courtney Love would have played when she was relevant. Again, I like it but I wouldn't play it.
Just my opinion…these might be the ugliest guitars ever made lol.
There is a reason that the original design for this was tucked-away among Ted McCarty's files. Sorry, this guitar is ugglyyy.
No question, the ugliest Gibson ever created. This is horrifying
As usual, going to have poor Quality Control, be over priced and... well yeah thats enough.
